These are great tips on how to learn the fretboard. Saw that you have officially hit 250K subscribers. Congratulations. Your Master Class is fantastic. Hey sean, i have struggled & struggled learning to just move up and down the fret board. No one and i mean nobody with all the learning cds i have and i have over 100 plus to learn the fret board. You are the first person to break it down like this. In just this 10 min lesson i can make music. I will actually pick up my guitar again to learn this easy phrasing if i can call it that. That's an awesome breakdown of the neck and has me looking at it in a new light. I have always used this thing I've heard called the "Hat" or "Pan" trick to find my major and minor chords. This is another cool way of getting around and combining them has really helped me make more sense of the entire fretboard and where I'm at. Thanks man

When you break through from guitar 2 to guitar 3. That's where this is awesome. Been playing for 12 yrs. and just now understanding what he is talking about. Right on MAN. My wife plays keyboard and sings, she knows where to go by ear. I on the other hand don't, I can only sing in D. ON THE D. played some new stuff because of this video. Thanks bro.

The 1,4,5 tip was priceless for a beginner like me. You are an absolute nutcase as we say in the UK,but I mean that in the best sense of the word. Zany,kookie or whatever you fellas use in the US ,but with great guitar playing information.

Don't know if it's because my middle name is 'Sean' but I find your tutorials rather eye-OPENing & refreshing. By the way, I'm not superstitious. Nice lesson. The major, minor, minor... chords relation was the single most important thing i learned taking lessons. Sick guitar by the way. I played a masterbuilt the other day, it felt like a several thousand dollar guitar that was $399

I wish I'd had your channel as a resource 10+ years ago back when I was still learning stuff like this. Probably would've really helped. Wish I'd had videos like this as a resource back when I was still struggling to learn the fretboard.
What ultimately forced me to learn the notes all over the fretboard was playing bass in a jazz combo because staying at the end of the neck gets boring after awhile when you're comping a bassline. But where playing bass really helped was forcing me to visualize the relationship between intervals on the neck. For any guitarists out there struggling to learn the notes on the neck: learn the circle of 5ths/4ths, it's invaluable.
It's an Epiphone masterbilt series guitar. I don't remember which one exactly although any search on sweetwater or guitar center and you'll find it. I think most of them are kinda reissues of their really old archtops (like this one) and some of the more common flat tops. From the looks of the masterbilt series they look really nice for the price. I love Epiphone

Very helpful video! I have a electric Gibson ( Epiphone) guitar, but I don't know what amp to use or how to use an amp. Any suggestions on which amp is the best? Any help will be appreciated! :)
The 1-4-5 2-3-6 use to confuse me, because i would think, well wonder if you start with a Minor chord... but since it's Maj, min, min, Maj, Maj, min, dim... for some reason I was confusing Key & root note with the starting chord/scale...

I learnt this one, with I,IV,V cords. The "I" Bar cord A major 5th fret in the E shape. The "4" is the A shape on the 5th string and the you move down two frets for the "V". Makes it easy. I like you f shape

Hey Sean, quick question! I'm now trying to understand music theory a bit more since I feel just knowing the shapes isn't enough anymore, and there's this one thing I can't seem to find an answer. In the 1+4=5 2x3=6, why does the scale in every key comes out in minors and majors, as you have covered? Why aren't the chords all major or all minor?

That's because the scale is diatonic. In a diatonic scale, it can be either major or minor. In a major diatonic scale for example, each note in the scale is called a degree and there are seven degrees within the scale before you reach the same note again. Each degree of the scale has an associated chord to it, which uses the other notes of the scale strictly. Because each degree has chords which only use other notes from it's own scale, it means that each degree has a chord quality which is set in stone to that specific scale per degree. The degrees are usually represented by upper and lower case roman numerals to show major or minor. It looks like this [ I ii iii IV V vi viio ] The last one there usually has a temperature degree symbol which is written in plain text as an 'o' and it's a diminished chord. That scale is only taking into account triads while sevenths have a separate set of symbols that build onto that set of symbols. Wikipedia diatonic scales for more insight.
