    This actually answered the only question I had about the wooden slats vs boxspring. I already have a boxspring so I had no idea if I needed the slats or not. This video is literally the only place I've seen that gives a straight answer!

    I just checked the store a few days ago. The factory center beams are pretty cheap in the store, like $10 each, so if one gets damaged or lost at some point, they are pretty simple to replace.

    omgoodness, thank you. I thought it was mandatory that you use Luroy Slats with the Malm bed. Nowhere does Ikea stores in surrounding area by me have these in stock, and we have been waiting for over 2 months on this to come into stock. Running out and buying a box spring. Feeling like I was just born. Thank you for the break down.

      I am not sure if that really matters, since even the weakest Ikea bed can be beefed up a lot with only $15-$20 worth of wood and metal brackets from Home Depot. Locally, I do Ikea assembly and repair in the Portland Oregon area and flat charge the bed repairs at $80 including all possible materials. That's for in-home service, with questions answered in these videos for free (google pays me a little bit on that through adsense). I did one of the upgrades a few weeks ago but the bedroom lighting was not good enough for a video. I will try to show that in an upcoming video. What usually happens is the beds get damaged during a move and will not go back together quite right.
      The best way to deal with it when you are moving and are an "ikea person" is to just put the stuff on Craigslist and sell it as is where is, then get new stuff delivered to your destination or check craigslist for deals to buy it at your destination. No use with the risk and expense trying to take it apart and hope all the parts make the trip long distance unless it is their higher grade all wood stuff.

    I want to know how *sturdy* is it? how much does it rattle say if you move a lot in bed?
    I"m looking to get the lift storage option
    can you get the drawers as an extra option and the lift storage?
    I've been to the stores, but never bought or built anything ikea. I've only been to the store to check out all the displays.

    The mattresses are just the tops. Already bought them. No box spring and no frame inside the mattress that I know of. I was going to put a slatted base underneath. Think it would work like that? I'd hate to put the bed frame together only to discover it won't work! Thanks for responding so quickly.

    This helped me so much. Thank you. I was going to buy a LEIRVIK bed frame online, (rod metal frame) and the options default is to either choose Luroy or Lonset. which thanks to this video. As well as with further research means I don't need either if I already have a box spring. Thank you sir. You just saved be from $139 - $99. Much appreciated. 8digitPDX

    I'm thinking about purchasing a Malm high bed frame, and currently own the box spring & mattress. Would the extra height of the box spring lose some of the height of the headboard (and add height to the bed overall), or does a box spring fit into the bed differently than the slatted bed base?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому

      Figure it will rise up on the headboard, but them MALM beds come with options for different headboard heights. The box spring support rails only have two positions, high or low, but there are a few different headboard options out there.

    but what is the difference between the luroy and a lonset

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  8 років тому +5

      +Amber Love The Lonset is the far more complex of the two and takes more than twice as long to assemble. It is effectively a wood and rubber composite box spring subframe setup which will hold more weight than the standard Luroy. There is no rhyme or reason why people pick one over the other in real world use. I don't think real world users even notice the difference when sleeping on them, but in theory, the Lonset allows you to use a cheaper mattress. Personally, I would not buy the Lonset but some of my clients insist on them.

      +8digitPDX First of all Thanks for your time and effort! I would like to ask you one thing, I prefer to buy a Foam mattress (as I have back pain issue), in such case which slatted base is good for me? Leirsund/Lonset/Luroy ? Also can you suggest the best IKEA Foam mattress, especially for my case (back pain issue) ?
      Thanks in Advance...

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  8 років тому

      Rahmathulla KM That I just don't know. I have built every variation of these things and personally, I hate the Lonset from an assembler standpoint. Customers see us screwing around with that for an extra hour compared to the Luroy and personally, I can barely tell the difference once the mattress is on there but then I don't spend much time laying down on customer's beds either. Just remember, these things take standard size mattresses, so any mattress store can hook you up with a mattress to your liking.

    I'm going to buy a BRIMNES bed with storage headboard in full size to use with a Casper foam mattress. It contains under bed storage drawers so I'm wondering if I need a slatted bed base or not. I also like REALLY firm beds, so if I do need a slatted bed base, which of the Ikea Options would result in the most "Firm" feeling. The Casper Website says that you need the slats to be no more than 3 inches apart, which would be the best for this type of memory foam mattress?
    Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  8 років тому +1

      You pick which mattress suspension system that you want to go with so none of the beds come with one. On Lonset vs Luroy, just go with the less costly less complex model. The price and complexity difference is not worth the hassle. If you are using a box spring, you just use the edge beams and center beam, no other mattress suspension.

    Do I need a midbeam if I got a full size bed? I assembled the small wood beam that came with the bed so I don't think it really needs the metal midbeam, plus it's only a full size.

    I'll be buying the Twin version of the MALM high bed frame with 2 storage boxes. I want to use my old Serta twin mattress with it and my old box spring if I can. Do I still have to buy a slatted bed base with the 2 drawer storage version of the MALM bed?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому

      Faiza Husain No, if you are using a box spring then you don't need the slatted bed base. You just use the center beam and side supports. The center beam should come with the bed kit but just a few weeks ago I encountered one where the customer had to buy it separately. There is also a huge price difference on those center beams between online pricing and picking it up at the ikea store. I think we paid only around $10 at the store but it is closer to $40 mail order. To be entirely honest, and I hate to say this, but I make most of my personal furniture from wood at Home Depot and occasional salvage lumber, I just assemble Ikea for customers. The only Ikea furniture I even own is the desk I am sitting at now. Everything else is either stuff I made, or higher end stuff that someone was giving away after they re-style to Ikea.

    Hey 8digit, I just bought a used MALM bed, but I'm not sure exactly what variation. The footboard has a middle piece that fits in between two very short ends of the footboard, which are attached to the long sides of the frame. I can't work out how to put it together, but it seems like it will be very unstudry with this design? Do you know the one I'm talking about?

    I just bought a MALM bed with the memory foam medium firm mattress and it came with the Luroy slats but they make to much noise I just bought the lonset as the lonset looks more solid then the Luroy one with the Lonset I noticed it screws into a wooden frame, now does the Lonset just sit over the metal beam and the long metal things at an angle?

    I am going to be moving soon and I'll need a new bed preferably a platform bed with storage but I am 325 lbs and I was wondering if a lönset slanted bed frame would be able to hold my weight? And another question is would a regular box spring work just fine in an ikea bed frame?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому +1

      JzawitaJ
      The beds are in standard sizes, so yes a regular box spring will work fine. In fact, don'[t buy the cross slat kit if you go with a regular box spring. Just the $10 center beam that normally comes with it. If you are feeling creative, you can actually double or triple the center beams by adding more. They use a special hardware plate at each end, but those plates are available from the service department at the store. The beams are usually around the bed parts section since some beds come with them and some don't, but most of the time, you get one beam and those angle braces. I beef up the beds by adding shelf brackets on corners, and in theory could add more center beams, but only on beds using a box spring, and not the Ikea wood spring slat system.

    I have a Malm Low Frame, I want to raise it up a couple more inches to gain access for storage under the bed, what do you suggest to raise up the bed? I was thinking of a 4x4 on the foot/headboard, any other cheaper/easier options? thanks!

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  10 років тому

      Yes, that works. You can also put legs on it that are standard to some of their other furniture, just make sure you get the heavy duty metal legs. It can make it easier to clean and sweep under the bed to have the legs instead of a bar blocking it all the way across, but some people do the 4X4 in order to not damage flooring.

    So I recently purchased one of the Brimnes bed frames with the storage drawers underneath. I've been hearing complaints about the slats falling through or not staying secure. I'm a little worried that they're going to fall and I'm just wondering if you've ever had that problem?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  10 років тому +1

      Yes, it is one of those design faults they refuse to admit needs a design fix. I lay the slats out as they make sense then use self tapping metal screws to screw them on to the metal rail that they would normally sit on and then not line up correctly with. They usually already have holes in the slats, so the self tapping screws are for piercing and then securing to the metal rails underneath. You can also use some kinds of sheet metal screws, but you have to look out for using screws that are too long or else there will be sharp teeth underneath which can possibly catch your hand or stuff you are getting out of the drawers underneath but there is usually enough room there to not be cause for too much worry.

    Have you ever used two Twin XL mattresses instead of a standard King size with the Malm frame? I am considering the King Malm frame with slatted bed base but two twins technically measure 78" instead of 76" and I'm not sure they can squish in to the space for the mattress. Any thoughts?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому

      If it were maybe an inch or difference you could probably squish them in, but if they are wooden framed mattresses and you have to squish down 2", then it's not going to happen. People have mattresses cheap on Craigslist, check that out and maybe do a three way trade. Around here, I get fairly new mattresses for cheap or free, and right now since I will be moving soon, I will probably just give away some of my furniture. It is the flow of things in this city at least.

    8digitPDX Can you use any mattress? Or do you need to use an Ikea one?

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому

      Matthew Shepherd You can use any common size mattresses on Ikea beds. For example, the Ikea queen size or twin size is the same as what you would find at Mattress outlet or Sears.

      8digitPDX my only concern is that my mattress is a pillow top and a little heavy. I'm afraid that the pull won't go up and stay up. It'll just fall down.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому +1

      Matthew Shepherd Use the center beam on the bed and just get some 1X4 wood cut to width for the cross slats. A lot of Home Depot stores will cut that for you out of the 8ft lumber.

    Have you ever done the lift-up storage version? -by putting an Alsarp unit in the Malm frame? Looks trick! heathashli.com/2010/08/ikea-hack-malm-w-storage-boxspring/

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  10 років тому

      Not that particular one but there are some people locally who go through stuff at Ikea Hacks and then call me up to do the work. It usually works out pretty well as long as it is something where the instructions were reasonably detailed at Ikea Hacks.

    I'm falling through my bed every night because the metal beam on the side of the frame bent downward---- wtf first i blamed on the basic ass boards that were purchased with the frame.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  10 років тому

      Could be weight and or rigorous sex on that side of the bed, remember that Swedish people in general average 160 lbs for the men, 100-110lbs for the women. You could beef that up by replacing the metal rail with a $3 2X4 from Home Depot. They will cut it to length for free, but to make it hold the most secure, you need to use an impact driver to run long screws in from the outside, so the screw heads will show on the outside of the frame, but a little touch up paint can hide them pretty well.

    • @ikpimjr
      @ikpimjr 10 років тому

      8digitPDX Thanks for the suggestion.
      I noticed sometime ago there was a screw missing from that metal rail as well. When i say missing i mean it was never inserted during assembly. This frame was bought for me when i returned from overseas.
      Anyway, Do you think idea would sell me a replacement rail with the screws. I intend to purchases the sturdier slates--- the planks are cracked and splitting from falling so many times. btw i'm only 170lbs lol.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  10 років тому

      Go down to the customer service desk at one of their larger stores and they have bins of the different pegs and screws for free. I always pick up a handful of little spares when I am in there just to have in my tool bags when I do assembly work on this stuff. They sell the beams separately, The heavy people and rigorous sex thing is not entirely a joke, it is something they actually deal with in their corporate decision making and design. You can get replacement parts for any of the common Ikea furniture but they are specific about stocking those center beams at the larger stores. It is just personally, if one of those is failing, I can replace it with heavier duty stuff from Home Depot or Lowes, but if it was just a matter of a couple missing screws, that is parts someone can get for free from Ikea.

      Seriously, duct tape. Put duct tape over the metal rails. Anywhere, the wood meets the metal.I did it to my bed two weeks ago. I now only hear an occasional spring move.

      Right, but the store locations have their own phone numbers, and that's the secret to it. You find one in a city in your time zone, call during their business hours and ask to talk to someone in the bed section. As in a real showroom employee. They know the score on this better than I do since I would have to go to the store and look again to adequetly answer your question. They have cordless phones in the store, so the store employee ought to be able to walk the floor, look at the beds and answer your questions in real time. You want to ask specificlaly for someone who is familiar with the beds though. The store employees tend to specialize in sections of the showroom floor, but "customer service" are expected to know a little bit about everything, and that "little bit' is what gets you. You want the person who specialized in that part of the store you have questions about.

    Kinda useless video. The only thing he made clear was that one uses one or the other of a box spring or slats..not both.
    But failed to explain malm bed variations...wait...was that the fly-by about choosing size & color? Phfft! This guy Needed to practice at doing explanatory speeches, before doing video. It’s trickier than folks think.
    1st explain, Malm is a bed model. 2nd explain, must pick slats or box spring size, & firm, soft. Then choose mattress.

    • @8digitPDX
      @8digitPDX  9 років тому +1

      +Conner Family Yes, you would use it with the standard center beam. Set the side supports and center beam on the lower of the available sets of holes (low setting). You do NOT use the cross slat mattress supports with a box spring. Just the center beam and the metal supports that come with the bed frame.
