    In my experience you can never assume an IKEA sofa will be comfortable just by looking at it. You should always butt-test before you buy.

      I'd say that about any chair or settee.
      I had an Ektorp sofa, bought very cheaply about 15 years ago. It was the most comfortable settee, even though it was the 2nd cheapest available in Ikea at that time. Unfortunately, it was ruined in a flat that had rising damp. It was discontinued, but I notice that they have it again - for over 3 times what I paid back then. Well, inflation, plus I got it on offer means it probably is still a good deal.
      But they might have changed the design, so I still wouldn't buy it before trying.

    I have the foldable birch Norden table, and I've had it for many many years starting when I was a student living in a 15m2 room with this table as my kitchen. The drawers held all my cups, spoons, canned and dry goods and so on. Tiny oven and electric kettle on top. I kept it folded up against a wall, and just lifted the one leaf to eat myself. Repositioning it to use both leaves was a job my guests had to help with lol

    I've had that table you mention at the beginning in 4 apartments at this point for over 10 years and it's served me so well! It worked when I was just renting a room, it worked when I was in a studio, it works now with a living room/kitchen combo as a nice side table for my couch on most days and a dining table when I'm entertaining. Absolutely a great buy

    Having moved to a studio flat in a retirement village, I find myself now living in the same space I work in. Every piece of furniture is multi-purpose, and most are on lockable castors. Originally a mix of several pieces from bargain sites online, I unified them by using chalk paint in mostly antique white, with touches of pale duck egg blue. It works, as it is functional and looks calm....

    I have used plain white IKEA kitchen wall units and larder units, added legs and used them as wardrobes and floor units in my sitting room, they look amazing in small spaces and you can easily disguise the hardware on the "countertops" with objects, a cat bed (!), art materials, books, etc.

    The problem with the Kallhall is the change in material is a change to much less sustainable materials. Particle board contributes to a reduction to poor indoor air quality as the glues offgas chemicals into your home. I miss the days when IKEA used more solid wood.

    I live in a 30m2 studio so my space is small small. One of my latest addition which I love is the LINANAS sofa. I had originally given up on being able to have a sofa when IKEA released it. Usually their budget sofa are hard and uncomfortable and the fabric tends to pill but this sofa has been super comfy that I fall asleep on it sometimes. It’s so small and compact so it’s easy to move around. Another thing I got was the KURA reversible bed. It’s marketed for kids but it fits a single adult perfectly fine and I use the bottom space for storage with a curtain over it.

    I have a very tiny bathroom with not countertop, so I use the Raskog cart with the cutting board top. It's fantastic!
    All of my daily use stuff (less tidy) is in the top tier, and the two lower tiers for less regularly used items hold an amazing amount.
    My bathroom is so small that the cart is usually right next to the sink, blocking the shower. Then, when I shower it gets wheeled over to the other side of the sink.
    When I'm doing something where I need repeated access to the top tier, I can put the cutting board on my sink, so I still have a countertop! It's one of the most satisfying things about my tiny space.
    Note: Because I was using it in my bathroom, I oiled the cutting board (both sides) three times so that it repels water a bit. I used actual cutting board oil for this (bought at hardware store) because it is thinner and soaks in properly, whereas vegetable oil leaves a weird sticky residue after a while. I will re-oil it occasionally.

      I have two Raskog cart in my art studio, love them! I didn't even know there was a cutting board top! Great tip about oiling it for your use. I have lined mine with felt sheets (eco, not wool or rayon) to keep the sound down (rattling art supplies). Designing my small apartment force learned me everything from this video. I just wish I watched this before I started designing. A few more thins I would like to add are:
    - pull-up beds are also a great secret storage space;
    - watch out how tall a drawer in a cabinet is - Ikea's are around 16 cm but other brands might be around 8 or 11 cm. The shorter they are the less things you can put inside and this limits your space
    - watch out for tables's sideboards - I had to choose beteween a dinign room or a living room so I combined them. The table I bought is perfect to eat on while sitting on the couch but very uncomfortable for the knees. Meaning typical dining room tables are tall to pair with a couch. The table in the video is a great choice.

    02:50 - OMG I actually have that Fyresdal. I didn't realise it was meant to be a daybed, I just needed a new bed for the unused spare room and I liked how durable this was. There's only one mattress on it so mainly suitable for a single sleeper, but before hosting a refugee this year, my bf and I were using it as a daybed to sit on and watch movies with. Now I understand why we instinctively did that!

    I made a daybed/couch out of three Kallax 1x4's: one on each long side and one across the head area leaving one cube sticking out for a nightstand. In the gap between the length Kallax's I made a rolling long base on wheels for easy storage. A twin mattress fits perfect on top of a sheet of thick plywood securely placed on the wide Kallax tops. / I had that folding table with the awkward legs that drove me crazy. So glad to know there's a new option.

    I also was very enthusiastic when I saw the Jattebo sofa online, but when I sat in it in the showroom, the back was really uncomfortable. The back is a tad too low and it is too straight to give proper lumbal support. It can be fixed with large pillows, but if a sofa is depending on that to correct the comfort then there is something wrong in the design. At least with the Soderhamm, they throw in a back and lumbal pillow by default to address that. It's a pity, but I haven't ruled it out entirely for my upcoming sofa purchase.

    I do think that all of the products shown in video are great ideas for small homes, but I would advice to look for similar items in different shops (local/outlets/markets etc), because most of them are overpriced in IKEA.
    I do think that Kallhall table look cheap :/ In Poland it's price is almost the same as the price of Norden - which look much more solid. I do have white Norden table - I bought it 5 years ago and ... I regret a little that I have white one - wood colored is made from actual solid wood, while white one is made of chipboard :( inflation is ridiculous right now... Norden is for 1199 PLN now and it was for around 600/700 PLN year ago o.O I get that this price haven't change for long time as I bought it for 599PLN but the price jump made it too expensive for it quality.
    If someone want to buy similar table to white Norden: good idea is to check LIDL - as they do have almost identical (4 drawers instead of 6) in their offer that comes from time to time and last time it was available it was for 449 PLN (around $100).
    Alternative for Fyresdal can be NYHAMN - it looks like a sofa and can be turn into bed and also is made of metal and have 2 mattresses (but slightly smaller, so it is 140x200cm sleeping space). TIP: you can buy only frame of NYHAMN or Fyresdal and then buy any mattresses you like (as IKEA don't have that wide range of them), it might not be doable by their site, but it is possible in shop (and probably by phone order). I bought NYHAMN frame and mattress, but I didn't bought their cover - I didn't like colors and as I would use it mostly as bed I would go only with bedsheet. That way I saved 150 PLN ($35). [I needed really small bed frame as mine bedroom is tiny and guys who installed my wardrobe left too little space - partially because it turned out that my walls are not in perfect 90 degrees XD]

    I agree that the Norden Table is very versatile. I have been using it as my desk for many years.
    I agree because of the solid Birch, it is a bit cumbersome to move. I also have a drawer that sticks.
    Still, it is the prefect "extra" table.
    I would also recommend tv stands from Target for $10 each. Has all of the versatility of a folding chair, but as a table. I have switched to these in recent years. They are a bit cheap looking, but keep an extra one or two around for personal use, and when you need an extra flat surface.

    I own the fyresdal daybed and i've been using it for a year and a half. the only issue i have is that the two twin mattresses often separate and shift when the bed is extended. Since the 2 front handles are too small to hold a mattress in place on their own.. But it's very beautiful for the price and the single reason i'm able to fit a king in my awkwardly laid-out 30 sqm studio!

      If I'm not mistaken, this bed would be 150-152cm / 5ft wide. Your standard queen size sheet (it may be king size in UK) should fit over both mattresses and keep them together.
      There are different depth sheets, so if you go for 25cm/10" the sheet should fit your mattress snugly.

    My daybed is my sofa during the day also my bed at night. My daybed was purchased from Amazon but the look is similar to ikea …. Since I am living in a studio and it is a space saver using a daybed … there is a ton of storage underneath the bed too.

    I've considered buying the Jattebo modular sofa, it is not bad at all if you get the corduroy version of it. The grey one showed in the video feels (and looks) so cheap IRL. In the end I personally opted for something else though

    I use Mosslanda in the kitchen as a tea and coffee shelf. Had a Lack shelf hanging there before, but it was just too deep and I kept hitting my head on the corner... Mosslanda has the right size to be head-friendly and to keep tea and coffee boxes as well as some utensils.

    Love this video, but it’s important to NEVER buy a sofa without testing it & talking to someone who has owned it for more than a year. Most cheap sofa cushions don’t hold up over time and can lead to back pain & suck the joy out of lounging around. Sofas and mattresses are two places where people should not compromise.

    I owned the birch Norden for years, and I hacked it with 1 inch Castor wheels. I loved it, but my wife hated it, as she felt that it wasn't comfortable. BTW the white Norden isn't solid birch, at least not when I owned one. It was MDF.

      @DanielTitchener  Рік тому +2

      That's a great hack! Also a good point about the Norden table. The white variant is made with particleboard tops and fronts, the birch variant is made mostly from solid birch 👍
