Oh, please do more videos like this! I'm part of an art community and own a fictional stables. It's all for fun, but I've never had the chance to see racing other than the actual race. All of this information is amazing and helps in me making my stable feel more realistic!
That CLEVER girl, Aristeia! Man, you have such an inventory of gear thru these feedback loops! I agree with Suzanne A. that it's so cool to see Chalky run. Both she and Aristeia are so run to watch!

I have that same D bit for Market. Except his has a French link. When he canters, he wants to go faster. I use a half halt but he ignores the direction. So I am getting him a Michlem bridle. I still have the chest plate & rubber reins for him. Pretty sure he will need those on the cross country course. Oh Jay love these Storm Cat babies. and the mouth piece of the original ring bit looks like a rubber snaffle glad you found a bit that works and thanks for the ring bit tutorial( don’t see them in my hunter:jumper world😬
Aristeia looks a lot more comfortable in the Houghton bit. She's not fighting it, she's going with the flow, so to speak. As you say, she's keeping her mouth closed on her own. Great thing. Sometimes the simpler the equipment on the horse works best. This is not the answer for every horse of course, as each horse is different in the requirements needed to race. So sorry to hear about the tragedy at Santa Anita during the Breeders Cup. My condolences are extended to the owners, the trainer, the jockey and all the support staff that got that horse ready for race day. Best Regards from your friend in Ontario, Canada, Jenn.

It not only affects the owner, but the trainer, the exercise person, the grooms and everyone in the shed where the horse was stabled. Sincerest condolences to Ganbat and his crew. She is not ready to race. Props to you for changing up the bit. Ty for taking the figure 8 noseband off. That is a very thin bit. I suggest she get some chiropractic work. If she is shaking her head and it's that high. A chiropractor can fix that and her hip needs adjustment as well if she is not catching her leads. Ty for your consideration. Good luck
Super video, very educational. The average fan and I include myself in that group have no comprehension of the complexity of getting the best out of a race horse. I do like the looks of a number of your horses, most have a good back and length to them. I am not a fan of these chunky quarter horse types, You mentioned you had some good turf horses back in Chicago and I can see that in the types of horses you acquire. Now it is just a matter of time and a little luck. How's the track?
I need to do some video about more details. For example, most people don't realize just how difficult it is to win a raxce. Statistically, only 1 horse will win in that 8 horse field- 8 to 1 against you before you load in the gate. Think about that.
Jay, I'm an old trotting horse man, I grew up around Standardbreds in the '70s. I remember seeing pictures of the Haughton bit without knowing the name of it, guessing that it was a "sidelining" bit of some kind. Interesting to see Thoroughbred horsemen using it. Thanks for posting.
Hah! My first job on the track was with a Standardbred outfit at Washington Park in Chicago 1969. I remeber riding over to the paddock sitting on the shaft of Joe O'Brien's sulky when I was a teenager.
Jay...she is developing beautifully. You want her to stay spunky...have a little fight in her, which she shows. Whats she eatin for grain?? Keep up the great work!!
What's she eating? NOT ENOUGH!!! She's a challenge to keep weight on. 9.5 pounds is all she'll eat right now but she's more relaxed in her stall and much less nervous so I hope we can inch that up a little

At first I was wondering if she may really do well with a shadow roll because I see that it could get her to reach out rather than climb up and get her looking forward. Just something she may respond with.

I always give my jocks the equipment they want in the short run. In the long run I ignore them because they overreact to anything that happens. Today he's got his equipment. Next week--ooops I can't find the equipent, take her out and see how she goes in this.. Suggest taking a look at the expensive Herm Sprenger bits. When I started riding my racers I had good luck with these. They are so comfortable for the horse I never had a horse fight this bit. The middle links are angled so that it fits flad on the tongue. the mouth piece is curved so that it fits comfortably on the bars.
Biting can be such a series of trial and error. I discovered my horse hated anything jangling or moving on the corners of his mouth so loose ring snaffles were a wash. He also would clamp on the bit on one side to keep it still. As a youngster he also tried the high head carriage, but I managed to disabuse him of that notion by using a running martingale for a couple of weeks. It's now an eggbutt and double jointed French link for him. Do you ever use double jointed bits? Or are you limited in what you can do for the track?
I use the linked bit sometimes. Technically, a training link is smooth oval, French link is flat and sits on the tongue on its edge, very severe. I suspect you have a training link bit, but most people call it a French link. There are probably other names for it as well
Jay C. Nehf It's not a severe bit as it has no sharp edges. It's fairly common for dressage as are the lozenge type double jointed snaffles. And of course educated hands and how you use your aids determine everything.
@@JayCNehfracing Thanks, we have a high alfalfa ratio with our horses (TB and Arabs) and they keep weight on pretty well...although, they aren't racing so they aren't burning nearly as much as she is. I just see a lot of videos with the Timothy grass hanging around, but hardly ever see any alfalfa which is mostly what is grown around here. Are there any health considerations with high alfalfa content and racehorses?
It's high in protein so when it's combined with high energy racing feed formulas it gets a little tricky. Dust is also a factor. Alfalfa has tiny crumbly leaves, timothy has long grass leaves. For 72 hours before a race I feed only timothy. There is a fascinating study that was done in Australia on prerace feeding. You should be able to find it with an internet search.

I can't say too much because she belongs to my brother, not me, and she runs in claiming races. A minor incidentthat required a little medication which prevented us from running. She'll be racing soon, probably at Los Alamitos
I saw the race yesterday he ran very very good after opening stumble but don’t u think rider make many mistakes hold him back and not running him when he is in full swing
I think Brice did a great job. The winner was allowed to slip through on the inside by the 2 horse. Notice the left handed whip just before the lane opened up. He got an easier trip but that's racing.
LOL thanks for the compliment but you have to start at an off track training facility, learn how to gallop and breeze horses for racing, then get licensed to be an exercise rider at the track, then work your way up in a top notch racing stable.
I find this very horse unfriendly. These horses are way too young and live very unnaturally for a horse. I feel sorry for them, all horses in the cruel race industry. The mouth opening is because of pain in the mouth, and you add a more painful bit and a nose and keeping her mouth shut.

Props for adjusting the equipment, she seems more comfortable with that bit setup. I thought TB had to be three before they raced?
2 y.o. by the calendar birthdate. Ari is really tricky to set up. We changed it again yesterday. Usually less equipment is better.

Tried the shadow roll but it just made her more nervous. We just have to give her time to adjust to everything.

Question about feed, do you guys use any alfalfa? Or is it just the grain and, I think, Timothy or Oaten grass?
about 1/3 timothy, 2/3 alfalfa. Aristeia gets 100% alfalfa for now, trying to put some weight on.
