I used to groom a string of horses, the hard work prepared me for life, the day is long early start, chores, feeding, coming back ,picking stalls, watering evening feeding, late racing, winning then the time at the testing stalls it was not uncommon to have a 18 hr day and I'm not joking. But the thrill of maybe winning a big race or better yet winning a handful of races. And just the sound of the horse's thundering down the lane there is no other thrill . To this day I dream of a horse set up and training center
There are SOME, not ALL trainers that are unscrupulous and abusive. I've worked at many tracks across Canada and the USA, and seen it. Every owner and/or trainer that I worked for, always followed the rules. Using only approved medications if they wanted to. Usually they didn't. And they usually ran their horses as 3 yr Olds and up. Not putting too much weight on the back directly as 1 or 2 year Olds, and always, when training, using polo wraps on the legs which they also raced in as 3 year Olds. We did everything we could to allow the horse to be a horse. Including turnout. So don't tar and feather everyone with the same brush. Even a human athlete, taking proper care of their bodies, if they are runners, can come out of the blocks at a race on any given day, and pull or tear their hamstring or Achilles tendon or every tendon in their knee. Do not judge, unless you know of what you speak. Have a great Sunday, wishing everyone safe passage through this pandemic called COVID-19.?
For what it cost to put a race horse into training. You can raise 10 head of cattle. People base thier conclusions on what they see. If they could only see the compassion and passion, form the horsemen for the animals have. That said everything has to go right, just to make a dollar in racing. But during training to spike a horse with juice is all tested for these days. Now there are no shortcuts to the winners circle.
You start by breaking the horse getting a horse used to you being on his back going forward going backwards and stopping and being able to turn. Then you start the work of training. The Spurs are used during training. Did you mature and they don't use the Spurs on the horses once they get on the track.
What do you think they're doing when they use Spurs on a horse? Do you think they are jabbing them into the horses side? They apply a little bit of pressure the horse with them.
Great video of working with young race horses.
I was so impressed with the patience put into this Philly.

I think it’s awesome that they begin the process of cross training them for other disciplines after they retire !
