- What are the steps to becoming a Thoroughbred Trainer? Can you just buy a barn and some horses, and phone it in? Or are time, energy and sweat equity necessary? Are there rules? Tests? Licenses? Not sure? Gary Contessa spells it out, and encourages would-be Trainers to follow their dreams. :)

I suggested,anyone that wants to learn to train horses,work for the best.
Wether they have 5,horses or 200,horses,find a true horseman......

Great job Gary, When I first met you in 1978 I knew you were destined to be a great trainer. You love horses and thats where it begins.
Mr. Contessa I’m not sure if you ever read these comments but I have wanted to move up in the racing world. I want to get my assistant trainers license. I’ve been in the racing world for 13 years and around horses my whole life. I haven’t found a trainer that is willing to teach me everything I need to know. I’ve groomed and ran shed rows. But I’ve watched the promotions go to men over and over. If you are ever willing to teach, I’ll come from wherever I am and relocate to you. Thanks

Umm.. There are many Courses to become a Horse Trainer. For example : Australia ~ Diploma in Racing Thoroughbred Trainer

So what if you've been a foreman and setup feeds and stop there and then got out of the industry and now want to get back to it at a later time in life. Are you saying that I would have to start all over again? I have plenty of experience around horses and race horses I like. I believe I would make a heck of a trainer but your final words are very discouraging. I guess that's the part that someone has to be young because they're going to hit that point in their life where they have to be able to endure the time where they're not even being looked at by an owner. All in all that isn't very motivational. The passion to work with horses especially race horses will have to supersede any pitfalls and negative input
