It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

This is the Free Documentary style I fell in love with some years ago! This is raw, talented, amazing editing and storytelling, and most of all, traveling worldwide to tell a true story ... Keep up the amazing work, Free Documentary! 👍👍👍

Dude has 9 children and it’s the rest of the worlds problem that he lives in a 28sq m2 apartment… What did he think would happen? Don’t have 9 children if you don’t have the means…
It’s this way in so many countries that are all so darn poor! Why do they breed like that!
he missed his math classes.
But in all seriousness, I think he thought of his kids as an investment, but he forgot he needed capital to do so.

These are the real problems of the common man in India. Literally, nobody cares about this BS Democracy vs Dictator debate. People want someone to solve the day-to-day problems they face; it doesn't matter even if it is solved by a so-called dictator.
More than a billion people are living there an still they're not capable of changing the government!!!
But did they talk to you about your cars extended warranty while you was there 😂
Imagine how wonderful it smells in that train 😂

Only backpackers who travel on pennies visit india ! It’s a nasty place
I’m glad I don’t live there
You have no idea how lucky you are not to be born in one of these places. It’s like winning the birth lottery.
@@LadieKadiethat last sentence is so true. Western societies should be thankful for how lucky they are to have developed into what they are today
Pick pockets all over 😂😂
In the gulf states they need Laborer, streets sweepers, toilet cleaners. In Africa plantation workers and other menial jobs are paying better. Therefore these folks should be send to these countries to have a better salary and contribute to India economic growth.
In the gulf they are treated as slave labour and have their passports taken from them so they can't leave after months and years of not being paid. They are beaten and abused and kept in very poor overcrowded conditions. There are few if any safety conditions in their work places. In Dubai labourers fall from those tall buildings every day. They die of heat stroke and malnutrition and don't even have enough water to drink or bathe in. They often go without food.
Africa doesn't need menial or plantation workers as they're looking for their youth to leave too. That aside, Indians in Africa are living their best lives so should consider migrating there to invest
To put a plate on table in India it's not for the weak🤦
Thanks Free Documentary for an extraordinary visit to Bombay! It truly is a wonderful place full of complexities, many happy people regardless of circumstances, and lots of love. For those who have not traveled there it is impossible to understand this city's beauty.
15:17 I can feel this man’s emotion and can relate. The only way to progress in life with dignity and be successful is thru hard work, with lots of determination and motivation. You are the only one who can make or break your future. I’m happy for his success.
Zero reason for this level of penny pinching on public transit. Holy cow man, pardon the pun.
How do three generations live in the same 300 square meter apartment? How do they have more children when they share this tight space?
It's quite funny that in documentaries set in India where Bollywood is mentioned, they often only showcase dance sequences from the film "Bride and Prejudice," even though it's not a Bollywood movie but rather a British-American production.
THIS WAS UPLOADED BEFORE SOMETIME LAST YEAR .I HATE REPEATS !! THEY SHOULD STATE THAT ITS BEEN REUPLOAD . 20 MINUTES IN BEFORE I REALISED I HAD ALLREADY WATCHED IT 😂😂
While it is not the responsibility or obligation of the rich to help the poor, it would be nice if they did. In a country where a wealthy businessman can spend 1 billion to build a mansion and 100 million can be spent on a wedding, the chasm between rich and poor is so wide.
The top 10 billion and trillionaires could, by their wealth alone, solve world hunger, water access and homelessness. Not to western standards of course but 99% of humanity could have adequate shelters, drinking water and a sustainable diet. Instead they fund wars, weapons and self-interest - who the hell really needs a $20+ million yacht or 42 luxury cars?
actually, it would be good if everyone could afford a decent home, decent food and education and not being hopeful some rich person will be charitable.
@@FreeDocumentary …in order to achieve that, they have to stop having children that they can’t adequately care for. Because the kids are the ones who suffer most.
@@johncbny Yes this is true but I hesitate to condemn people for having children because families and children have different statuses in different cultures. But I do get and understand your point.

This is "modernity"?
Its ok to build these high rise buildings, what happens to those people who was living in the slum?
They get free apartments, but they still complain about it 🙄
The rich is entitled because they pay for it but the poor is given free but still demand more . No surprise given more things it’s just an excuse for them to comfortably breed more. Besides giving them nice things are useless they won’t be appreciative and like they say u can’t get the slums mentality out of them

So he destroys the slums and replaces them with high rises. Question: where do the people who live in that slum go?? Can they afford an apartment in this new tower?? The answer is NO. So where do they go...they move somewhere else and rebuild the slum. This country is a sespool and human rights nightmare. Class system is old and needs to be abolished. All Indians should have the same option.
The man clearly explains the scheme for the ppl in the slums 😂 this is how things work .. the worlds not fair Chad ! deal with it !! Worry about improving yourself first then go to Mumbai and do something about it or stop Bit**ing Chad 🤷😊😊
Apparently Chad hates watching videos longer than 2 min and didn't watch the whole thing. Like most kids with an attention problem he missed the whole part of relocating the family's into new houses. Maybe before criticizing and skimming videos, watch them first instead of people paraphrasing the video for you. - I know that's an insane concept to grasp.
Don't be like Chad.

Never in a million years would I go there. Live in an overcrowded city then in the night you have to worry about leopards eating your kinds in the night. That train to omg 😱.
What happens to the poor people??? You can answer that yourself.... Still poor and thrown where the rich wants them thrown.

The richest family in town resides in a 250-square-meter home. They have their own staff to attend to their needs. While they live in a rather stylish house, they prefer to eat with their hands instead of using knives and forks.
That is a tradition thousands of years old......do you eat burgers with a knife and fork? Hotdogs? Sandwiches?
@@Juanita-gf4te Sure, I do.
If I'm not mistaken, millennia ago, it was common for people to hunt animals using stone axes and other ancient weapons. Some things should be upgraded.
Lol
@@connormcload9091 Why should they? I was married to a Hindu and lived in his world for 7 years. I learned to eat with my hands and the food tasted much better, without a mouthful of steel. Our kids ate that way too. Later when I returned to NZ I found it hard to use a knife and fork again, it spoiled the taste of the food.
@@Juanita-gf4te It's quite shocking that you even ask why. But since you did, I'll answer. The reason surgeries aren't done in hospitals with kitchen knives or other primitive tools, and why normal civilized folks use flush toilets and running water, is hygiene. Hygiene is key, and eating with your hands is basically stomping on hygiene with your feet. The fact that I had to explain this is just appalling.

India unable to provide transport for its population yet have space progtamme mind bogling sort out problem in your country first before venturing to space
Oh, yes. India Big Man learned well from their English masters.
I wish I could see a world where there had not been colonization but greed and the thirst for power combined with an arrogant belief in superiority seem to be fully ingrained in a high percentage of humans
@@cw4608lol, thirst for power and what you call "greed" is ingrained in all of us humans with varying degrees. It's the instinct to be in control and be better. This isn't "greed" it's ambition, and this instinct is not going away any time soon. So instead of whining, why not try to be better and more powerful yourself? As for the sense of superiority, I believe it's directly proportional to your advancement and success as a nation. The more advanced the more you have deep pride in yourself. This doesn't mean we should treat others disdainfully tho, but having pride in one's own self and achievement is good
