Food crime is a multi-billion dollar industry affecting everything from the cheapest to most expensive ingredient. 10% of what we eat is thought to be adulterated. “What we know for sure is that food fraud is growing exponentially and it’s more and more worrying,” states one consumer advocate.
Criminal syndicates are infiltrating the global food supply chain, undermining the ability of consumers to trust what is on the label and what ends up on their plate. In Italy, entire sectors of the food industry are controlled by the mafia. All over the world, well-organised criminal networks work together to penetrate complex supply chains. Scams range from the intentional mislabelling of inferior products in order to pass them off as premium items, to the substitution of one food stuff for something else entirely. The profits are enormous. But what are the risks to the consumer? How can we identify food fraud? And what can be done to stop it?

Realistically, 95% of the extra virgin olive oil you will buy in the US is not extra virgin. much of it is just regular olive oil, a quite a bit of it mixed with cheaper oils.

You should talk more about the olive oil. I bought a bottle of olive oil and didn’t realize it was a “blend” of several olive oils, it was not the same taste as real olive oil in cooking. I’m old enough to know and remember how real olive oil tastes in cook.

@@michaelw2797 everything seems to be a “blend now” unless I can make my own olive oil in small batches I don’t recommend as your wasting your money on something that isn’t olive oils due the oil mafia and cartels.

It exposed some of the same stuff seen here, very interesting.
It's still happening in South Africa. Last year and few years before people that are called "myFriend" in South Africa has shops all over South Africa and they sell counterfeit products on a regular. Sometimes shops are closed by community when kids fall sick but few days later shops are open again. Mainly cos South African Department of Health allowed this to happen and to keep happening

@@ENDEVRDocs Can we even trust the local farmers? I heard that even the "organic" farmers put some pesticides in their crops. I try gardening and let me tell you, it was hard, fighting diseases, bugs, and having to water constantly and yes, I had to use some kind of "organic" pesticide to keep my plants going. I don't know what the best thing to do anymore. I just want to eat healthy without worrying about the source of my food.

In the US, the USDA (Department of Agriculture) is the Main food Cartel. They protect the processed food industry at all costs. They even have a law against complaining about food, called "The Food Defamation Act".

And I think in general I'm pretty educated on the subject of food, like how the colour of most meat we buy is artificially created, but quite honestly - even with all that being the case for me, there's just no way you'll never eat something you weren't aware of lol

Nah. Beef is so cheap to produce in the industrialized meat packing industry, using most other meat (including human) would cost far, far more. All these legends about hamburgers containing worms or kangaroo wouldn't make sense. Horse meat is cheaper in some countries, though, so THAT fraud makes sense.

The government in Ghana for example, allows EU heavily subsidized tomatoes from Italy, to enter the country, making the locally grown tomatoes too expensive even for the locals. Instead, they should put a stop to the imports, and export from Ghana to the rest of the continent. So, the young farmers leave their tomatoes in the field to rot, and travel to Italy to farm their tomatoes getting peanuts for payment. 😒
