Hi y'all, never commented on anything on here before, interesting video, I am doing one of these myself, but doing it a bit different, Have a couple of hulls lying around from custom skis so thought I would have a go.I always replace the entire fuel system with external filter, pump and regulator so it can be replaced without removing the motor to access the tank, also adjusting fuel pressure is how you adjust fuel mixture, stock is about 43psi..While the motor is out do a valve adjustment and oil change!!!! Fist off Im had to buy the starter solenoid base bracket, the ecm bracket and the coil brackets for a 1500sxr as they are different, all the 12f stuff is same bolt holes but different brackets. Second you need an sxr1500 tank and the float it sits in which is tough as they are back ordered to who knows when. Found a tank in Canada and glued pieces of a Husky kneeling pad to the bottom in strips, works fine. You also need the sxr 15 tank straps ,steering cable, throttle cable and battery box.Turn the ground and starter wires to face forward. I made a 4-1/4 inch disc out of aluminium for tank top with 2 1/4 pipe holes for fuel out and return. 12f motor fits fine with exhaust removed, Had to extend a lot of the harness to reach rear of the motor as the main harness plugs to the ecm at the front, soldered all connections and double shrink wrapped. Extended the run/off wiring to reach harness as handle pole is longer than on a sit down. I have connected the gauges at the rear of the motor, I will try it and then disconnect and try again. I have connected the crescent shaped steering sensor as I figure it probably reduces power on a sit down when turning ,but I have glued and then siliconed over the sensor trigger that sweeps over the crescent sensor in a straight on position, that is dead centred in the crescent so the ecm thinks the boat is going straight ,Also removed the tip over sensor thanks to Jims video.Running the stock 1500 sir pump as I have a few ,looks very similar to 12f just use elbows for water lines if u want use 12f. Used 12f reduction nozzle and turned 12f steering nozzle upside down ,trimmed extra lip off the end and spaced cable connection 1/2 inch or so {12f steering cable is on the other side ) G Ron amazon and buy a 4 pack of 1/4-28 stainless rod end bearings {14$} as the 15sxr cable is 1/4 -28 threaded at both ends, not 5mm like a 12f.Used stock 15sxr water box, changed my waterlines about a bit like usual, added 2 bypasses .Hope this helps, c u a body Beach!
you guys rock < watch you and Merlin together , iS uisually my entertainment for the week lol................Keep up the great videos , QUESTION JIMMY IF I BRING YOU A ski WILL YOU LOOK AT IT please ?
I love this. its like doing an engine swap on a modern car.. but a bit simpler. I am keeping an eye out for one of these hulls in my area. Everyone seems to pull the pump section, sourcing a used one seems difficult. Im surprised when swapping the ski they dont plop in a solas 12 vane..
58 is top speed in stock form from factory on perfect water conditions at BB. 54 is on the money given the test conditions you were in. Good episode! I may need to borrow that thing for a Wednesday sand bar run!
Could you do a video on these stock 1500 hulls on making them not so squirly? My dad and I demo one back in 2017 and even though I was a beginner he grew up on 550, 650, and 750s and we both thought they had death wobble . Which was not what we were expecting.
Actually, I have a video planned for modifying the 1500 hull, however, the issue you are describing is the same that has always plagued the watercraft industry. When they lay up the hulls in the mold, they are supposed to wait a certain amount of time to let the resins harden. In a production environment they always seem to rush this and the hull changes shape while hardening outside the mold. I have seen several 1500's with a recess in the bottom of the hull from the resin "shrink back". We call this "hook" and it causes several handling oddities. The 1500 responds very well to truing the hull to fix several issues like this.
How did you pull this off with only $1500?? Dying to know lol! I just subscribed... old school IJSBA standup racer here. Won Novice 550 Limited at the World Finals in 93.
Yeah, I kinda dropped the ball on the that one, LOL. You have to factor in that I used the ski as a donor for my Bullett Racing V4, so I had the complete hull, handle pole setup/steering, waterbox, drive shaft, intake grate, ride plate, etc. I found a 12F for $500 that needed a starter bendix, and out here nobody likes to pull the motors on the sit downs, let alone disassemble them. So the the only thing I needed was the fuel tank, fuel pump, steering/throttle cables, hood latches/hooks, etc. It ended up being under $1500. Thank you. :-)
Not a dumb question at all. 12f engine is the first of the 4 stroke jet ski engines from kawasaki. It was derived from the zx1200 motorcycle. 1200cc's and around 125HP. it was so successful they lengthened the stroke and created the 1500cc 160HP Engine and called the ski theu put it in a 15F... Many parts are interchangeable .
@@jetskijim007 gotcha. I actually just purchased a "sxr 160" (I don't much like the name change) today. Still looking for sxr hulls (I'm sure they're more plentiful in havasu) to do an 1100 swap. Or maybe if im lucky an sxr 1100 premade.
no, not even a little. They never sold many units in the midwest back in the day, and by the time I moved to Havasu, I had already stopped repairing sit downs.
First how were you able to bypass the gauge bc wouldn’t it send it into slo mode? Also I understand people remove the setup out of the sxr bc of its plug and play with harness n smaller intake correct? But the sit down 12f n 15f intake is ok for the sxr hull? Just trying to figure out why people would buy a brand new sxr fir a hull swap instead of getting a 15f engine from a donor ski n buying the parts that you need to swap. Seems it would be cheaper and you could spend some extra money and throw some upgraded pistons and valve train in and still be ahead. Plus you don’t have a nice ski hull laying around unless you do what you did which is a great idea. Only thing I see as a pro is it would be a brand new engine but if you buy a used sxr you in the same boat as a used 15f sit down. Could you send out the ecu to be reprogrammed to not have the steering sensor? I know on the ultras they are removing speed limiters and traction control when retuning.
First question, I thought the same thing, but evidently if the MFD Display goes bad, It shorts the beginner mode circuit, then you are stuck in that mode till you get a new one, plug it in and change modes. Mine was in normal mode, so when I unplugged it, it stayed there. Second question, The main reasons everyone strips the SXR is because the aftermarket hull companies reuse a majority of the SXR components into their hulls, and If you try to buy all the incidentals, they will nickel and dime you to death. Thank you. :-)
Did you modify the roll over switch and leave the steering sensor plugged in to the main harness? Those two are usually the main issues with no spark, as well as the oil pressure sensor. I think I have schematics somewhere, and I found them through google. I will see if I can find them.
I dont have the oil sensor hooked up, my connector got ripped off, thatll really stop it from getting spark? Can i just ground it to test? @jetskijim007
I am doing this exact thing with a 1200 motor and a 1500 hull. I have it all installed and it fires up and idles great, but when I try to give it gas it just bogs and won’t rev up. Any ideas with what may be causing that? Everything is plugged in correctly as far as I know. Thank you so much for any assistance you can provide.
did you copy my fuel pump, set up? You may need to hook up a fuel pressure gauge to watch what is happening when you give it throttle. Lack of consistent fuel pressure will cause what you are describing.
@jetskijim007 I believe I hooked the fuel pump up the same way you did. I used the 1500 connector on the 1200 harness and put the two wires what I believed to be the correct holes. I can hear it working when I hit the start button. I might be missing something though.
@@stevenvunlvpgapgm just what you said. If it starts and idles, the electric part is correct. On the fuel line side. Did you just run the fuel line from the pump straight to the fuel rail? You have to either tee it, or plug one side of the fuel rail. the SXR uses a closed loop system, the sit down uses an open loop, meaning it sends the fuel back to the tank.
@@jetskijim007I ran a hose from the fuel pump to one side of the fuel rail. I then plugged the other side of the fuel rail. So there is no loop or return or anything. Is that an issue? I see yours has a hose on both sides of the rail.
