Phil, you did something different in this demo. It was subtle. But, you held a note to allow it to sustain. To my ears, sustain is one of the points that differentiates guitars. Tacking on OD, distortion and adding a little EQ basically makes every guitar sounds exactly the same. Whereas, the length of sustain tells me the how well the pickups are representing the wood and the quality of the guitar's construction.
If you don't mind, when you do guitar demos to add a spot like you did on this one that allows us to hear the note resonate. Allow the note to extend naturally without vibrato or effect. Even if the guitar does not resonate as well as this PRS, it helps as it will distinguish the differences between the guitars. Then, you can let it loose with all the wild sounds. :) Great job, Phil. Always love your perspectives. It sounds like you put a lot of preparation into making every video and it shows!
He's so indulgent, excellent reviews and no bullshit, probably the no 1 guitar reviewer in my opinion. For professional guitarists its a blessing to learn about gear in detail here.
I know there’s so much to your videos, but I really love your playing Phil! You’re honestly one of my favorite creators on here.
I have one of these coming in the mail. Should be here next week. I had Sweetwater replace the tuners with metal, locking tuners. Looking forward to it.
Sweet guitar. Was planning on ordering one soon. Thanks Phil for another great review.
Please let your buddy Paul know that maybe a "Junior" S2 McCarty series is in order. Locking tuners, stop tail bridge and no neck binding. Could do the Junior and Junior Deluxe. Same bodies, necks, same electronics and pickups. Maybe some more colors on the Thinline Junior version?
You would have better luck than me. Lol
I’m with you on why would they not just put the S2 locking tuners on it. Worst part is you can’t with out even if you wanted to. Great review Phil. Can’t wait for the side by side with the core! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This new model got my attention for sure. I think I can get the single cut version and sell my SE Zac Meyer and my LP studio and not miss a beat. Thanks for the review!
I don't like the look of the pickup selector switch on the upper horn. Looks fine on a single cut.
They are still just so expensive. I want a PRS but i just can't part with that much money. Especially the Core versions, I would be scared to play it.
Matt i don’t think it’s worth more than 1500$ when you can get a schecter for 1200$ that’s gives you more guitar for your money like the sls elite or apocalypse from schecter
Really wish you never mentioned that black nut. It’s something you don’t notice until you do and then it’s all you can notice. It really does make the binding look awkward
Phil do you know if this would fit in a formed Stratocaster case? Thanks - great presentations!!
Since we are on comparisons, have you ever done a video on the SE line like the Custom 24? Just wondering.
I got a core and this guitar is not even close when it comes to split. the neck pickup here is very bass intense and there is not clarity. I think that changing the pickups will make it exceptional. as for the tuners I think it's ok. overall, you can make it a killer with different pickups.
One day........
Hello. Have you heard of any issues with the brass thumbwheel studs holding the 2 piece bridge on the s2 594 thinline ? Specifically both the brass thumbwheel studs bending towards the nut resulting in the bridge not being parallel to the body ? I have an new s2 594 thinline. Seem to be getting a little run around from the dealer on getting this taken care of.
is there a tuning stability issue that would require the locking tuners or are they just a "nice to have" on this guitar?
Nisssssssssce 🎸
It's no karate kid movie themed guitar but it'll do🥞
how do you intonate this prs ?? I only see a one part bridge assembly
Were you playing "shallow"? Those chords sounded like it
I currently own two S2 models. Both feel great BUT........ in my experience the pickups sound really good by themselves jamming in a room, but once I played with my band there where these horrible overtones fighting in the room. No matter what I did there was this underlying buzzsaw sound. No other way to explain it. I replaced all pickups with Duncans in one & DiMarzio in the other, problem solved, GREAT guitars to play & now they sound incredible. Just my 2 cents.
AFAIK the new core models also "reverted" to those non-locking tuners - don't understand at all - buy a 4k guitar and it does not come with locking tuners?
I'd probably feel more comfortable using the S2 over the core. The only couple of really nice guitars in my collection (CS LP and a EBMM Luke 3 ball family reserve) , I hardly play because I'm to afraid to ding them. Each time I crossed the 1500$ price point I ended up essentially buying man cave wall decoration.
@@stratmagic6893 Yup, I do play my guitars, I play them a lot, but sometimes I buy the wrong ones.
That is too true. An S2 594 single cut is my next and last. They are amazing guitars. I was very impressed when I tried one out.
This how I know I am watching too many guitar videos: I have never weighed a guitar. Ever. Not in 35 years of playing. I have never even picked up a PRS...and I KNEW he was going to say 7lbs. Just by the look of him handling it.
Comparison with your LP lite would be perfect. Same style, thickness, price. Betting the 57 pickups would be better
This guitar is £1,849 in the UK, which although half the price of the core model is still a lot of money, so I believe they should be able to offer a case at this kind of money, other companies do. An SE comes in a gig bag, a USA made guitar should come with a case. I agree that it should have locking tuners.
Since we are at that price point, I think it would be interesting to see a comparison to an Ibanez Prestige. They range from around $999-$1999 (used/new) so a similar price point. They are built in Japan and generally don’t have lots of compromises.
The Ibanez in the next price bracket are probably closer to the upper price PRS (sans private stock, but I’m sure Ibanez super duper custom is the same), but they aren’t that common and just waaaay above my breaking point for spending on a guitar.
Had an RG652 ash body prestige. I don’t think there is a higher quality guitar. From the case to the pots to the binding on the headstock. But it was definitely more for metal. Didn’t have the roar I prefer from my les Paul. They even sounded very different when played unplugged.
THX Phil. This was a great video and greatly expected too. I'm not going to hide that i'd love to see the A / B comparison with the core 594. So i 👍!
The S2 Single-cut 594 will be my next guitar. I just need to figure out what finish I like the best. Thinking the blue is standing out right now.
Definitely not that UGLY brown. I mean if you like brown then I guess that would be a great example. LOL. For me the Scarlet Red or Whale Blue. The Antique White isn't bad either.
dpdockery mccarty sunburst
@@bluesthing7490 I have the scarlett red and it is great. Neck is bigger than all my other guitars but I like it.
I just ordered mine in the faded blue smoke burst and I can’t wait. I’m a little nervous to see how it looks because some pictures show it very blue and some just look grey and black
Domonic Ramey I about ordered that but went with whale blue. What did you think of yours?
Love it Phill! Are you planning to review some another Tagimas or more obscure brands this year? And if it is a yes what kind of brands you have your eye on?
I like the solid colours of the thinline ones, but want the pattern vintage neck. The thinline has the thin neck :(
Same! Love the red thinline but not the thin neck.
Great review, I am leaning towards this 594 over the thinline and singlecut just for the larger neck, agree a 3 way shootout with the core and a standard Gibson would be great.
I have a 594 core, Les Paul Standard and Les Paul DC. Tonally it simply isn’t a Les Paul and it’s not even close so If you want that Les Paul tone this guitar isn’t it.. It IS however very close to a Les Paul DC in tone.
It's going to be real hard to resist getting the Thinline version
@DigtBrain2 Keep an eye on Sweetwater. They get the 'factory Bs' from PRS intermittently. I got a thin line a few days ago that has barely visible pick scratches for a $150 off. You have to be quick and check it often though.
DigtBrain2 when I bought my Silver Sky new last year I was told it was going to be six months and then I got it within two weeks. I’ll hope for the best for you in getting that thin line ASAP!
Nicholas McNeil I’m not surprised. I think (heavy emphasis on that word) that PRS makes it a point to under promise and then they’re more likely to over deliver. Additionally, the better the dealer you order from, the better the likelihood you’ll get it in good time.
I just wish the pickup switch on the thin lines were on the upper horn
Whats the difference between this and the thinline model ?
I think a +$1000 guitar should come with a hard case
Ive always loved PRS since i first bought their first gen Santana SE many many years ago. Open chords are just so full and warm and I just love the hell out of it.
$1700.00 & no locking tuners? Pass. Hard pass.
Great video Phil! I agree I dont really see why they got rid of the locking tuners. They even got rid of them on the core line of Mccarty models. It just seems like such a step backwards.
PRS have stated that they want to take the McCarty line back to a more vintage spec.
Pennies become Washingtons, Washingtons become Lincolns, Lincolns become Jacksons and Jacksons become Franklins. They are saving money.
Hate the birds, give me dots!
Just got the thin line version of this one in a few days ago from Sweetwater. Phenomenal guitar! S2s are, for me, THE way to go when buying a PRS. However...that new Hollowbody SE might have to be an exception. I was a little concerned about the tuning keys as well, but they are fantastic to use.
Phill you always do a great job but this time your making me want to buy an S2 although i wont get rid of my core! 😅☺️👍
I have the PRS S2 594 35th anniversary .. the guitar itself is like custom core quality the woods used are the same as the core playability better then my core 22 custom and 24 custom BUT!!! the electronics and pickups are straight garbage I do not know why the guys doing reviews say these pickups are decent my Wilkinson classics made in china are far superior lucky for me I had some Dimarzio pickups laying around the DP190 and DP192 classic air with coil tap now this guitar is incredible so be prepared to buy pickups because those 85/15 S are terrible cannot believe Paul would put that garbage in his guitars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT THE GUITAR IS WELL WORTH THE 1799 with USA pickups its way better than paying 4k for a core
Needs a Marshall to bring out those mids.
good review. Super muddy neck pick-up sadly.
Please compare to core
loved the tone on that baby. Amp Racks! Cool. I'm still stacking
Dear Philip, love your channel and I making you guilty of me getting that guitar as well as getting my wife to give me CE 24 for my Birthday…. LOL
I was always a Gibson (Les Paul) and Fender strat, and now I’ve got all the world… It was probably very silly of me because I’m maybe 1% of you as a guitar player… Anyway, you’re getting the blame… lol. No regrets though… The guitars are lots of fun… And yes, you’re guilty of me purchasing Hughes and Kettner head amp. Love it, even my wife does (the look especially) By the way she is an amazing Grand piano player so you can imagine how annoying I can get when she’s playing Chopin and I spoil it with my guitar playing…
Wait a second, the nearly $2,000 S2 doesn't even have the same pickups as the core? It has "S" which are in their cheaper SE line up? That seems absurd to me. This is like buying a $2,000 guitar that comes with a cheap licensed Floyd Rose trem when its $600 counterpart also comes with a licensed. Double the price of an SE does not seem worth it then.
Great Phil vid. I missed this one though seen most. I have this exact guitar. Love it. Yes core has even more clarity on pickup up but I play on tiny ampscin tiny pubs. The slight difference wouldn't show. Terrific guitar. Yes I have vintage famous guitars but this PRS is equal or better
My S2 Custom 24 might be the ugliest PRS ever made. It has a B-minus top and a blah sunburst finish. Great playing and sounding guitar, stays in tune, very versatile tones, withstands seasonal weather variations very well.
++if i don´t have the money for a core i´d go for the custom SE+ peavey classic20+ 2x12´´cap + tube screamer and the rest for beer++ sry i don´t like the s2 as a PRS
I purchased the Thinline version of this guitar, and it's a great guitar for the money! I heard some dissing on the 58/15 S pickups before I got it, but they are good humbuckers! I don't really use the coil split option on this guitar, but it's nice to have it.
YES THANK YOU FOR THIS REVIEW. BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG AND THERES NO S2 594 CONTENT 🙏😭🙏
$2000 for a gig bag and same electronics and pickups as the SE models. Nah
Why Kluson-type tuners and not locking? Isn't that part of what makes it a McCarty?
I don't know why Lacquer is supposed to be the "great" expensive paint. It's outdated tech and even though it's preferred because it weathers better, it's actually a cheaper paint
I think this would be a nice introduction for me to Prs (the singlecut) being a Les Paul Guy
I dont like the shape of the s2s. Only reason I want a core is because of the shape :/ especially that 594 HB II
You should make a video using all those amps on the wall and just that guitar!
Delos Headless!!! Beautiful!!!
It has the correct radius (??????????????????????) WTF is the radius. I prefer 12 inch.
I really want one, but the new SE seems like the more compelling buy.
Love this but I’m a little disappointed that it doesn’t have the same pickups as the core models, I’d add 100-200 bucks to the price for that
It would compete with the core model
3-400 for that lol
I plan on getting the singlecut version of this and will likely throw some Tremonti pickups in it \m/
AlcLegacy did you get the singlecut yet? I have one coming my way
I was looking at a McCarty, but I don't care to spend $3800 even though I could swing it. There are just so many other things I would rather spend that money on. The price on these is much more appealing.
Does the SE line-up have the PTC program as well?
gonna review the thinline?
The fretboard binding on thr PRS models that have them look terrible
$1700 and a gig bag. STOP IT !!
Quentin James I prefer it, but it should be a choice. I don’t need more cases.
@@Cool3reeze I prefer the gig bag as well and PRS gig bags are nice.
$1700 is ridiculous. You can get a nice CE for that and it has real pickups.
@@puffin_time But it's not a 594. I already own 2 core models (513 & CU24). I've been wanting to add a 594 but don't want to drop 4K on it. Plus the thinlines only cost $1500.
i read the words 'STOP IT' in my brain with Shaq's voice yelling to kenny smith and barkley... STOP IT!
I had the choice of this guitar or the Silver sky. I chose the silver sky and I'm very happy. I'm sure I'd been happy either way.
Sounds pretty nice, but I think it's too expensive for what it is. For that price there are some good guitars with better features out there. Neck pickup sounds muddy and sounds a little dark in general. I have a Custom 24 and it is a masterpiece in every way. But it was also $3200.
You are getting a USA made PRS. The price is in line with US made Fenders, Kiesels etc. Seems like a great guitar for a very fair price without spending over the top for a core with the fancier carved top, wood figuring and finishes. I have the S2 singlecut and it is great.
@@suedeface yeah but for that price I could buy an excellent condition used USA Parker Fly or a new USA Fender Elite strat or Tele or a used USA Gibson Les Paul Classic or for $100 more even a good used PRS Custom 24. Maybe if I played it I would feel differently though. PRS does make a fine instrument.
@@smflyboy I have an elite tele and strat. This stands right there with them and fills my les paul gap without buying a les paul. Price seems fair to me. Finally putting a prs I would want at a price I can take.
I have an S2 standard and it rarely goes out of tune. Locking tuners can always be added. Cheers!
I really like it.its quality all the way for half the price.👍🙂
Great review. Would love to see a video about your amp rack setup. I need to do something similar and not even sure where to start. Are they all plugged into power all the time? Do you use an amp switcher?
could someone give me an amazon link to the tool he measures the action with?
It's pricey but here you go... www.amazon.com/StewMac-String-Action-Inches-Stainless/dp/B01HUCS3YA/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=stew+mac&qid=1581634558&sr=8-6
Sounds really nice! Been eyeing the single-cut because I like that Les Paul body shape. Prices on some guitars just blow me away man! Everyone loves a great sounding & playing instrument but some of those prices are just ridiculous!
So…..PRS 594 or Les Paul classic?
new studio set up looks great
IT MUST BE MY EAR BUT THE NECK PICK UP IS MUDDY AND BLAND
Wow I just discover that on the prs gig bag
I've been waiting for this review and it doesn't disappoint. I'm going to buy the Thinline mostly to get the pattern thin neck.
I want this in a gold top finish please PRS.
Why the binding?,BIG? Definitely don’t like the binding!!!!!!!
Actually (just to be a pedantic old fart), Gibson's scale-length for LPs, etc. is NOT 24¾ inch, and it never has been. Gibson claims that it is, but if you measure a bunch of LPs and SGs (which I have, since I've been a professional repair-tech for 40 years), you will Never find one that is 24¾ inch - they vary, but almost always fall between 24.625" (24 ⅝") and 24.7"
Odd, I've measured all of mine and they've all measured at the claimed 24.75 inches.
We are at 2.2k... come on, all we need is 300 more to get that video!!!!!
I just bought a used black 594 Thinline, it’s currently in transit. I really like the tuners, but hate the birds. Dots and it would be the perfect S2 aesthetically. Probably needs a pickup/electronics upgrade, but that’s easy enough to do and you can probably recoup a good portion of that cost by selling the S2 stuff to an SE owner looking to upgrade.
curious if you upgraded the pickups,
its a beautiful guitar with a great sound . Thanks for a clear and good description of this guitar
I can't imagine getting a better tone than you got with the metal one.
Fra-gi-le. Must be french.
Love the new look for the office/studio
hanger is for airplane hanging in the front of the plane
I dig it. I've owned two S2's and have sold them. I couldn't get along with the finish...felt like plastic...just weird. Especially on the neck. Other poly finished guitars don't feel like those S2's did.
Ed Pack did they change finish on the one? To nitro? I’ve heard speculation on that but nothing definitive watching namm videos
@@zwip778 I don't think so.
Comparison with core please
Awesome video and very educational as well.
Excellent. Thank you.
I hate it when the neck is lacquered
Black nut looks cheap.
why not hang it in the closet?
These should have something like the double tap system Fender does. Those sound just like single could when tapped. That's the only weakness though! But what about tuning stability?
What are mm? What are the 64th #?
While I was researching, PRS had confirmed that the S2 pickups are better quality than the SE pickups however they’re both made overseas. The S2, while built in USA, has all electronics from abroad.. Doesn’t make it bad… but buyers should know. It’s nowhere mentioned in their catalogue therefore one has to assume they prefer you don’t know.
Hi Phillip,
Would love to see the comparsion with the core
Kind regards,
Sam
Should be out Thursday or Sunday depending on how the editing goes
I agree. I’d love to see this comparison!
