Dude, that's so fucking weird I did that too! Dead serious. I think I paid $2.99 a piece for them at Gamestop back when they used to have a bin full of loose PS2 discs sitting on the counter. I got a LOT of great games out of that bin back in the day.

Great review! Does anyone else feel sad that physics engines nowadays seem to have gone backwards? Ragdolls seem sparse these days and objects are nailed down to the environment. I just replayed HL2 last month and it was such a blast playing around with the game world. Good times.

IGN claims an Xbox port was planned. Wish it happened too as it would've improved the framerate and load times.
Regardless though this is a great game. Funny how at a glance it may look like a cheap budget game but once you pick it up you know it has a lot going for it.

    I'm glad you reviewed this.
I also thought Cold Winter was like an unofficial Soldier of Fortune sequel because of the globe hopping and gore. It also had features that would become more used in games like Far Cry 3, like crafting and the animation used when using health packs.
If any game needs to be remastered and released on the PC, it's Cold Winter.

  • @Stuntman175

This game was amazing to play on split screen 2v2 using a Multitap! We used to cut up refrigerator or washing machine cardboard boxes to divide the screen in two to avoid screen peeking, we even took the curvature of the CRT into consideration and closed the gap with some card stock and bits of transparent sticky tape. One side got controllers 1 and 3 which was top left/bottom left and the other side got 2 and 4 which were top right/bottom right.
This had great gunplay for the time, but unfortunately the devs decided to put a literal bright red marker that even showed distance to target over the enemy players. It would be visible constantly unless you crouch walked and it couldn't be turned off. We ended up migrating to Delta Force: Black Hawk Down after a while for our gaming nights, which was also a whole lot of fun in itself.
Cold Winter is running on Renderware, a very capable (again, for the time) rendering engine that was compatible with just about every major gaming platform in the 2000's. They could have very well released it on PS2, Gamecube, Xbox and PC and sold more copies. I'd love to see what the modding community would make for this in the PC realm.

I actually played this on my vacation to Africa back in 2006, and also while still living in upstate NY. Never owning a gaming PC, i was still looking for that elusive 007 Goldeneye 64 style of game. The OG Xbox had a few contenders (Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Timesplitters 2 & 3). However, besides Red Faction, Timesplitters, MOH FL, and Wolfenstien, *Cold Winter* was one of the purest FPS titles on the PS2. Worthy edition to the collection. Game on!

Cold Winter was one of those games that I thought was pretty forgettable upon the first playthrough. Then some years later I'd play through it again and see a sort of "value" that I just didn't see before. I'm in definite agreement about the comparison to Black and SoF2 - actually, I prefer it to both games. Black had no multiplayer, no gore system, enemy deaths were (I think) animation-based rather than physics-based, character dialogue was really mindless, ridiculous perfectionism (e.g. destroy every single fuel tank, barrel, etc.) was required to pass the game on Black Ops (the highest) difficulty, less variation in enemy appearances (always a variation on the faceless, masked paramilitary/insurgent character), less overall weapons. Perhaps Black's only clear advantage is that it was graphically superior - yet somehow Black is remembered while this game isn't. It is actually closer to being a much more violent version of 007-shooters like Agent Under Fire if one aims for the closest comparison possible. I still remember the early Egyptian city levels (my favourite part of the game) just after escaping the PRC prison fondly, and some weapons like the AK and PKM were very fun to use.
There are still many games I feel it loses to - even on the back of the game manual is an advertisement for Scarface: The World Is Yours, a marvelous, similarly violent, large scale and nowadays obscure game that would be released a year later, also published by Vivendi. And half a year earlier, I felt, Killzone did a lot of things better - looked better, had a much better multiplayer mode (e.g. 14 bots maximum against Cold Winter's lousy 3), much more replay-ability (e.g. unique paths for certain characters) and was more creative than a mere "rogue agent" story similar to Goldeneye: Rogue Agent.
I'd wager Cold Winter may become more of one of those "cult classics" in time, with a small group of both praisers and haters, most people totally oblivious to the topic being discussed, often in a hotly, profanity-laden manner. Far Cry 2 has already became the same way - some proclaim it the series' best, others the worst, but few seem to be merely ambivalent.
