    Hi Shane enjoyed your video as usual. These Coleman Lanterns bring back some fond memories, well memories I just as soon forget. Yup another war story, but here goes. I was a newly minted second Lt on my first tour in Vietnam. I went over with the advance party. While waiting for the rest of the units to arrive in country, we set up briefing tents with huge maps of the area. Each of the units were drawn on this huge sheet of clear plastic. We used what were called grease pencils, which was nothing more then wax inside a pencil. The wax was easily wiped clean when changes were made. When the units arrived, I was present at a briefing where all the units were drawn on the clear plastic. It was night time and the only light available was the Coleman lanterns. As the briefing progressed, the light from the lantern got dimmer and dimmer as the pressure went down. I noticed everyone was moving closer and closer to the map to see. I quickly grabbed a spare lantern and pumped it up, lit it and replaced the failing lantern making it brighter again. The Colonel looked at me and said, thanks Lt and I grabbed the failing lantern, intending to replace the mantle . The US Army lanterns had a special compartment on the base along side the gas filler cap and next to the pump. A major sitting next to me, reached out and took the lantern from me and with a sneer told me to move it, that he would change the mantle. I watched as he started to unscrew the gas cap, and tried to warn him to release the pressure first and was about to tell him where to extra mantles were stored. He again sneered at me and told me to go away, far away. The Command Sgt Major tugged at my sleeved and motioned for me to step away and said "watch this " . The Major unscrewed the gas cap and with a blinding spray, blew gas all over the map completely wiping out all the work written on the map. He added to the problem by trying to wipe up the gas with a rag, only making matters worse. The Colonel had a melt down and got on his case. The major started to cast blame on this lowly 2 LT but the Col was having no part of it. Snicker snicker chuckle. Ken US Army retired.

      LOL ... That's a great story Ken, thanks for sharing it! I would of had a hard time not laughing out loud when that happened.
      I have one of those Coleman mil spec lanterns with the storage compartment in it. They are a sturdy lantern. I'll do a video on it one of these days.
      Thanks again for the story and have a great night.

      If any one really knew what they were doing when the lamp started going dull why didn't they just pump it back up?

    I wouldn't own the inferior valved 275 but do have a 275A I rebuilt. Believe they were only made for 3 or 4 years. Works great. Also have a flint striker on it. When lighting you should be able to slide the spark striker up closer to the mantles for easier lighting, then pull it back down. That's how mine works. Despite not having the traditional "Coleman" look, I've found my 275A to be a reliable lantern, no matter what the lantern snobs call em. Globes, generators are still readily available for these.

      They built a whole series of inferior lanterns, their current stuff is great, maybe not the stoutest but functionally good.

    I recently bought one of these from a guy on Craigslist for $30. Mine had some serious fire going on at one time or another. The knob on it is scorched. (I ordered another one from Old Coleman Parts) Anyhow I got it home with the original globe and I swear I was being extra careful while washing it and it just cracked! ARGHHH!!! I have anoterh clear globe form a propane lantern but still frustrating. I have a second one I won on ebay believe it or not and it was not an arm and a leg. So I may go through both of them and sell the one I am less fond of.

    I have 2 of these 275A lanterns. They look like new except 1 has some very light surface rust on the inside bottom where your striker inserts. Otherwise, they look new, work perfectly and I have the clamshell cases too. I love them! Before I hit mine with steel wool, do you have any other recommendations for removing light surface rust? I love your videos! I've learned so much and am much more comfortable working with my lanterns as a result of watching. Atb - Luther

    • @SWPhotography
      @SWPhotography  5 років тому +1

      I'm glad the videos helped! Some fine steel wool should work fine if it's just light rust. Hit it with some WD40 or other penetrant oil and then lightly scrub with the steel wool while the part is still covered with the oil.

    Every new globe I bought has cracked in one way or another even when I was cleaning the globe. Very weak glass.

    ive almost bought a few of these 275 the only reasion why i havent gotten one is that i know they are totally different from 200`s and 220/228. also if your son is like you he will become a fine man/person. i dont think you got anything to worry about. i know that the bas pro shop near me has globes for those. do ya want me to try and get you one? it would be no bother they are like $13

      Thanks AWH! And thanks for the offer to pick me up a globe but I think I'm good. I might have one in storage and if not, we have a good local surplus store that has a pretty good selection of Coleman parts.
      BTW, I don't know if ya got my email but I mailed off the 413 leg last Friday so you should have it sometime this week.

      Shane - Blind Dog Blades this one uses a generator and it would only last 3 hours on a 1 lb propane bottle then flat out quit working. The garage is packed full. It will take me a few days to get to it. Either way I'm gonna send one to ya because you helped me with my stove. And thanks again
