Drew, I am a 65 year-old baby-boomer who really enjoys your geography videos. I have been curious about geography almost all of my life probably because we had a cool globe. I still have it and now love to see how many countries have changed, or not.

I grew up and live in Idaho and I had to do geography in the 6th and 8th grade. I find it so weird that other states don't have that standardized. I know my state doesn't have the greatest reputation in education but damn, at least I know where most countries are lol
As context, I'm 28 now, I have no perspective on public school the past decade lol

@@voltkotz Oh nice, that's better than my state. Here it was taught once in like 6th grade. Drew, Drew, Drew... If you think you won't get culture shock just traveling state to state, then you are not traveling currently 😅
I do think he meant like the differance between 2 very distinct culture
You go to Hungary the culture will be completely differant than say Greece, eventhough the distance between the two is so small im pretty sure most US states would be bigger.
Obviously there are variation of culture in the US, but thats also the case for everywhere else
Brittany in France has its own local culture the locals fiercely defand out of spite despite the constant decline due to XIXth and XXth century France destroying it, however its pretty clear that ultimately they are still french, and there would be more similarities culturally between them and Alsace than them and Wales eventhough Wales is culturally closest to Breton by origins

Not just geography but language as well
Americans who can speak a few words in another language think of it like a neat party trick and not a vital life skill
I blame the parents for not teaching their children and solely relying on the education system to do 100% of the work. And i blame corporations for making said parents believe that working til 65 or retirement & owning a home was the American dream.
Very true but that has more to do with elitest propaganda
I mean, relying slowly on the education system wouldnt be bad, if the system actually worked
Parents should be able to rely on the school system to teach their kids basic geography. They can't but that's more a failing of the education system than the parents.
@ChloeWitcherI can assure you most Americans have not thought for even five seconds about where the ham burger was invented, so I think this point is null.
Its not like the corporations make people "believe" in working many hours. Its more like people HAVE to work those hours cos of low pay and high rent cost. So no wonder lot of kids parents have literally not enough time for them.
I have never left the US, but if I ever can find time outside of work and college life, I want to see beautiful countries like Spain, Finland, Ireland, Scotland, and Germany.
I had to look things up out of my history and georgraphy classes. I enjoyed reading about Finland's civil war and the eventual Winter War. Accidentally came across a Finland history book that talked about both events in my high school library. We need to better our education and encourage our children to look outside of the US.

All this and people say Americans have no culture. I'm from the Caribbean and I can tell you that American culture floods this whole region and beyond.
You guys should really make Geography a mandatory subject for a few years. It'll do you all a world of good. It's really broad, covers multiple other subjects partially, has things no other subject has, and it was surprisingly popular when I was at school. Probably because you could pick it no matter which route you took. The most scientific bundles and the most cultural bundles could both do Geography. It's also just really fun.
And I preferred Biology and History, so I'm not nearly as biassed as possible. So I'm not just spreading propaganda for my favourite subject. It's my second favourite.
I was going to suggest Geography as a mandatory subject and Social Studies, which incorporates Geography in its curriculum.
There is more connection in the younger generations to the rest of the world.
Older ones were raised more in isolation and larger conservative ideals of self reliance. We are being raised in the age of connection across the world and it's making us better people.
Fun Fact: Canada technically never got it's full independence until 1982.

I really wish someone would use lord of the rings maps and ask Americans where countries are.
It'd be so funny
In Illinois in Elementary through High school, geography is required.
Illinois is better though
traveling within America is pretty fantastic though. No jetlag, currency exchange, prepaid phones, or language barrier but you still get world-beating natural beauty and monuments to man.
Geography was part of Social Studies and History all through public school in Arizona in the 90's....We learned about soooo many counties...chose countries to do reports on...had full units focusing on different cultures. Like...
WTF happened?
I'm not 100% on this but I heard that the reason is that some higher ups found that America was low on a list about best performing in maths or something like that and decided to make schools put more focus into things like maths to get higher on the list while putting far less focus into subjects like history and geography, leading to neglect in those topics.
The reason why you run into fans younger than 20 is because fans older than 20 don't have time to go to places where they can meet you.

As an American
Respectfully, you’ve made me want to not travel at all
FYI for people the USA has a “enhanced license” that shows proof of citizenship and identity and can be used to cross the Canada and Mexican border. The purpose to get this unique item is to travel by land or sea to: Mexico, Canada, or some part of the Caribbean. So it’s a passport but not a passport. not many people know of this
I mean, it's still a ridiculous thing, except that IDs aren't really mainstream in the US, South America just have a bunch of countries with the agreement that we can use our national IDs instead of passports to cross the borders.
@@0Clewi0 we do the same in Europe. You dont really notice that you are in another country, they signs just kinda suddenly switch language. Sometimes you need an ID for border checks, depends totally on where you are, but mostly you dont really need it. Passport is good if you wanna fly, but ID´s are totally fine if you are driving or taking a train.
@@johncenashi5117 it's totally different, we do have firm borders, if you're a foreigner from the region you still need full checks, EU just don't have border checks in many cases so doesn't matter if you're french or american.
If it's all airports in latam it's like having normal immigration process, just using your daily id instead of a passport, inside the EU you don't need immigration checks no matter your nationality, they work like national flights would do in most countries.
FYI in in Europe there are 27 [not 2: Canada, Mexico] countries where people can travel with their national ID cards. No pass needed.

Geez. I have learned so much geography from this channel it is acually crazy. If I never watched any of these but still watched and played every other geography/ themed video or game I have watched. I would still only know about half of what I know.
As an American if drew pins this comment in the next video I will name 100 countries and the continent they're in without researching Google
75% of Canadians are around the Great Lakes. The equivalent of a cold small northeastern state. Most Canadians would find traveling pleasurable. Many Americans don't have the money, and convenience to travel abroad, especially with kids in tow. It might be easier to drive from England to Italy than across Texas. While Europeans speak English there is still a language barrier.
Drew is doing his very best to unite us all, though :)
As you said in the end, your'e absolutely doing your part in informing the people of a vast, diverse and history-rich world. Thanks Drew, I love you. Your'e changing the world.

is the reason why we aren't good at geography is because we have been to war so much that we don't want to talk about it
You mention Oppenheimer once and I'm stuck thinking about how he doesn't speak Dutch in his own movie. He speaks German and calls it Dutch. How am I going to sleep.
Most American people know nothing about other countries but unfortunately their politicians and military involve in other countries internal matters. Very bad.
Younger than twenty,? Why thank you, kind sir! I shall take that assumption straight to the bank.
When I watch other channels react they rarely talk. They basically just reupload the video as their own and break fair use. Drew is different and is always adding something of his own constantly. You're doing great work here Drew. I look forward to the time when knowing the countries of the world is no longer impressive in the US
I always tell people to try and travel outside the USA. Some of them say they just don’t care, which is so weird to me.
Americans are not dumb at all. I have lived and worked in San Francisco as a European. Internet, GPS...American inventons. All big tech companies American... Give me a break. What I did notice is that your educational system is different. More specialized from early on. While in Belgium (Europe) the educational system is more general. Geographical knowledge, learning multiple foreign languages..., but less specialized. As an native English speaker, why would you learn another language? Most Europeans, especially the younger generation all speak English very well. (Even the French and Germans). Imagine you are an American and you learned for example Dutch at a course. Then you want to go visit the Netherlands to practice. Automatically Dutch people will hear, you have an American accent, and will switch over to English. I do have an American neighbor and he told me, that he tried to improve his Dutch, but Belgian people always switch to English, when they hear his American accent.😂 Kinda funny.
Geography is A LOT more than just countries and their location and flags…
would never think drew durnil would react to britmonkey
love how they needed a American to explain a British video about Americans too Americans. keep up the good work
I love travelling America as a Canadian for a few reasons:
1. Lots of beautifil places like the Pacific coast, Utah and the beatuful red rock landscape features like natural arches and "bridges". These are just a few of litterally hundreds of beautiful spots in the US!
2. I don't want the culture shock, I like that its somewhere new without a language barrier
3. S Tier Highways system makes getting around super easy if you have a car like basically all Canadians( and Americans) families have.
4. Fairly affordable and gives you an opportunity to buy stuff to bring home that is cheaper and products you don't normally have access to.
I love the USA!!!
The third point is harming muricaland, the country is more for cars than people nowadays.

Drew you did get me interested in other countries ries ntries ries ies and traveling. In fact I can name almost all of the countries in the world because of you, legit learned geography from your vids.
An interesting stat to look at would be world knowledge and families with military backgrounds. I grew up with a world map on the living room wall showing the places my mother and father had been and been deployed. I learned about the new countries in the easter block when my older cousin joins the marines in the 1990's and was possibly goin to be deployed there. Might just be my family though.
4:19 yoooo Denmark was mentioned
Side note about 7 years in Tibet: It's an American movie and American actor, but the character and real person it's based on was Austrian.
Drew i know ur not gonna read this but you actually did completely get me into history and geography
Since 2009 Americans have had to have a passport for going to Mexico and Canada. That was an act of Congress bizarrely called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. It is odd that those countries let you in by land but the US requires you to have a passport to get back. If you travel by air, a passport is required by those countries.
Defunding public schools must be a big part of the problem because when I was young decades ago, I learned geography in grade school. Also luckily my parents had an encyclopedia which I consulted regularly and went to the library. I found out a couple of years ago that my junior high school had been changed into a charter school. Awful.
17:02 "Paradoxical" is probably the most apt description of my country that I've ever heard.

"italy has literally more to offer in one aisle" so what does Italy have?
So why do i have relatives living in America and not italy
Well it's not America's fault they don't necessarily need to learn many geographies due to their location, they only have 2 neighbours so it makes sense. plus we all know that not all Americans don't know geography, but stereotypes are fun for all countries
nobody said it's Americas fault Americans got so stupid, but considering how much they meddle into other countries businesses one would believe they should on average know geography better
there are countries with 2, 1 or even no direct neighbours, but still learn geography, to me your reasoning makes zero sense
Well, 4 neighbors, Russia and Cuba are within the UN’s 200mile radius which guarantees that far off the coast of a nation, that any within that limit can be considered a border.
Russia is 3 miles from Alaska and Cuba is 90 miles from Florida. They also technically count as countries that border the US in the UN sense
Also, THE SCHOOL BOARD FAILED! I am a Sophomore in highschool and I was one of 2 people In my history class that knew that Africa was a Continent NOT a country! (We were also the only 2 kids in the class who could name all 7 Continents. I thought of asking her out to the dance that day)
Petition for Drew to learn luxembourgish (day 30)
I never watched this particular video. But watching this now, after President Biden recently signed a bill targeting TikTok over matters of national security struck a few cords for me before I got towards the end, where that app was mentioned specifically. The practice of US censorship with ideological cause is still alive and well.
Since ByteDance belongs to a Chinese owner, an app of its kind along with it’s current geopolitical situation, it managed by someone immune to being told how to manage sensitive data by the United States government according to US law, yet virtually provides a window of foreign leverage to defy the United States’ current governmental efforts for information control and cybersecurity cannot exist. Which is why ByteDance has an official ban, more-so pertaining government-issued devices for the immediate moment, but it solidifies nationally in months unless they divest and surrender their management in favor of US governmental control over data.
Again, the practice of US censorship with ideological cause is still very alive and well. Despite playing off the somewhat laissez-faire facade in terms of information spread coupled with freedom of expression, we should know it’s not true. What had developed reinforces exactly who exerts the most influence and enforces the world order at every opportunity.

Living in The US feels like you are in a snowglobe. I am from Poland and have lived in the US, and I visited many countries. Most Americans unfortunately are uncultured, uninformed, and unsophisticated. Even a lot of the intelligent people in the US know very little about culture, history, geography etc. Most Americans have this false sense of superiority. They assume the US is the best country in the world. When most European countries are much better to live in. The US is unsafe, not very clean, and there is a huge problem with the equality of wealth. There are a lot of really wealthy people in the US but there is also a lot of really poor people in the US.
You know not everyone here is the same, not everywhere is poor/unclean, not everyone is unsophisticated, and not everyone is uncultured, in fact it's the opposite. The U.S. is full of numerous cultures as immigrants helped build the nation and many traditions and customs have been passed down through generations. For example, in my neighborhood we have a large amount of Spanish and Italians who still stay true to many traditions. Now of course I can't speak for everyone but it's still not good to generalize 300 million+ people based on a few individual experiences.
my brother in christ you live in an American puppet state
@@godofcheese5528exactly
@@godofcheese5528 You can never generalize a large group of people. Not all Americans are like that. However, it’s a lot more common here than a lot of other countries.
@@godofcheese5528 Cultured is an old word that retains its meaning over the English corruption, from when it was the word for 'cultivated', which means to be grown from roots. The opposite of that is radicalization, again referring to be torn up by the root. That's what playing house with the icons of your culture is, and it's merely tolerated within CERTAIN LIMITS, in America.
Smearing what remains of your connected braincells together, like a Syrian kid trying to rescue his dad from a drone strike without knowing any better, is not the same as putting the roots back together. It's the same as losing your roots like when Americans hightailed it away form under the Anglican church and didn't protect their property.
The tale of the Syrian kid I talk about comes form an Australian podcast, so that's not your fault, just a vivid metaphor.
