Hi there! I’m Scott and I’m a fix-it guy. I live a fix-it life! Welcome to my channel where I document and share all the fixes I run into in my regular, everyday life and offer instruction on how you might do it too. Whether it is a computer problem, a home appliance issue, a household maintenance chore or repair, a gardening problem or challenge, or maybe an automotive or mechanical difficulty, I like to try and solve the problem myself. I also have fun trying and learning new skills. I take on projects knowing I’ll learn something new, and I always gain an appreciation for other people who are talented in that specific field. Heck, this whole channel started because I thought it would be interesting to learn something about making and editing videos. Please subscribe and enjoy the fun of fixing.

Fedora Hat Repair / Complete Rebuild
I left my gas cap off the car by accident. Drove about 7 miles before realizing and I just happened to look and my light is on. Hope this works
Question, I have been screaming for a year out house has mold and nobody would listen and I’m so highly allergic to it it busts my skin open, I stopped breathing at one point, all kinds of stuff. I have a beautiful incolay jewelry box given to me by Client and I’m wondering how to get the spores off it Without damaging it.
Well, the method I outline here is the only one I know. I see no reason why it shouldn't work on mold.
I love how careful and precise you are when you work. I didn't know changing a cord could be that simple! Well done!
Thanks!
2011 vw scirocco, 2.0tsi. I tried the launch control with the DSG box and now check engine light is on. Please help 🙏
Every time when I filled up my car, in the third days, engine light came on, and back off, keep going back and off, I very frustrated!
I washed my truck & car's gas cap in a pan of hot water with dish soap. Rinsed it well with hot water. Let it set for 24 hours on paper towels to dry. Coated the rubber seal with Vaseline before installing. It has been a month now & it works like new. Reply
Great video! Made replacing the damper very straightforward. I would just suggest turning the fridge off before doing this, as the wires to the damper motor are 120V.
1. Lay a throw away blanket or some wood under pipe to make a little less painful to get through, 2) wear mask under house so you don't breathe particulate matter - all that stuff you can see in front of flashlight
Foundation repair is a bit misleading, this house has no foundation. It was literally build on few concrete slabs
Sorry, not so. Full perimeter concrete w/reinforce steel & bolted sill plate. Center pier blocks on individual slump pours.
I have two beautiful boxes that were heavily smoked damaged. How can I clean it?
The method I demonstrate in this video is the only one I know.
@ItsFixable Thank you, but I was hoping for a solvent for the smoke: the boxes are almost black. I was a lapidary (long ago), so I think I'll have to see if I can do a shallow grind to get rid of the darkness and still preserve the designs. It'll be a daunting task.
Sounds like a challenge! Nothing to loose though.
That is the filter, but there is a deodorizer cartridge somewhere on it. Probably on the back of the seat, remove the seat from the toilet to find it.
This model does not have a deoderizing filter.
That seems like a huge span where you started working. Could be a great reason for movement and sagging, not enough structural support. You must be in a nice climate to have open pipes and no insulation in the floor. Appreciate the video - going to be jacking up half my new (old) house in the spring to level flooring but its wet, cold, and much nastier looking than your nice dry space. Yeah, me.
The design (1-1/8" T&G on 4x4 beams) is one I would not recommend and to my knowledge is no longer used. But around hear, Northern California, you run into it occasionally on houses built in the '70. Nor do low cost builders insulate below the floor or pipes. It's a shame!
@@ItsFixable Good to know. May be scary to think of it this way, I'm very close to Northernn California lattitude (southern Ontario, Canada) but I bet that warm ocean current means your winters are nothing like mine!
Do big box stores rent out Bottle jacks I don’t feel like buying 6 jacks.
Many tool/equipment rental yards offer screw jacks, but bottle jacks are harder to find. They aren't terribly expensive though, especially at places like Harbor Freight, and you can always recoup some of your cost in then end by reselling them used.
I bought a new chain. $6 why bother sharpening the old one?
Well, I'll do a lot of cutting and I find it's much more efficient to touch up the one on the saw. Plus, I sharpen to more of a chisel, flatter tooth angle, so that it's more effective doing ripping cuts. I can keep a chain working for several years.
We bought a cabin that had this done 4 years prior, they did a great job BUT in 4yr it already is sagging again. Is it proper to remove the floor boards to allow for digging a proper full depth frost line footing?? The amount of sag on that particular site, would mean we would be adjusting it ALL the time and we dont want to be dealing with that...
I've been lending a hand on another leveling project and I made this little video: ua-cam.com/video/lN6y6JTy3-0/v-deo.html You'll see at about the 2:30 mark that the floorboards have been removed in areas so that pier footing could be dug, and while at it, over 4 yards of soil removed so as to have better crawl space in the future. Continued settling indicates there is some other soil issue which should be corrected. Otherwise yes, leveling it'll be an unending problem.
@@ItsFixable So to say that the soil is too soft for surface corrections Would pour-in footings at frost depth dug through the floor be a 100% approach, or can there still be issue with even 4' dug footings? I feel like if the base of footings was a poured 2' round, then an 8" mold poor ontop of it would help give the footer a fat footprint, keeping it from sinking at a 4' depth? Or is this not even a garuntee in soft soils?
I would think that it'd be necessary to determine at what level the soil is of stable compaction, and then to dig to that level. I haven't experience working on foundations where there is seasonal freezing but have heard that it causes heave, so getting below frost line is necessary. As for dimensions of the footings, that should be specified in local codes which usually account for all the native conditions. You called it a "cabin." How old is it? Was the site compacted before building? Was it originally constucted to code with proper a foundation? If not, I'm not sure there is an easy solution.
This is AWESOME!! Thank you! You may want to update this tutorial as some of the settings you mention are indeed the same but have changed locations on UA-cam. However, the steps still work after I found each setting. This has SAVED ME SO MUCH TIME!! Thanks again!
It should be illeagle to have crawlspaces less than 5 feet deep.
Greetings 😊- wondering if you can assist please? Is it possible to copy someone ELSE'S playlist and put on my channel?
Yes I belive, but they would need to activate the "collaberate" attribute of the playlist or allow you administrative access of their channel.
I just bought an old farmhouse I've lived in for 24 years. The foundation is made from some kind of home made concrete. There are small sea shells in it. There is no crawlspace. Which means tearing up all the flooring. Each room sits on a foundation. This means I have to tear up each room to gain access. This house was supposedly built in the 50's but think it's much older considering there's a blocked off chimney in the living room and in the kitchen. The original fusebox took 4 round glass type fuses. Good insights here on what to look for. Definitely going to need adjustable brackets you mentioned.
Sounds like quite the project. I've seen cement like that. I've been helping on a 1944 built house with very little crawl space. The owner had to pull the floor boards to access the foundation too. House sunk 3" in the center. This video shows one small aspect of the work but you can see all the pulled floor in my little walk through. ua-cam.com/video/lN6y6JTy3-0/v-deo.html
I have a 2011 cruze lt. I want to ask something regarding the gas cap. In my car, the gas cap is with key but i didn't get the key from where i purchased my used cruze. So the gas cap is without key and it doesn't lock there properly, click sound comes, but it still remains loose, even with click sound i can just lift off the gas cap it will open, it never tights. Maybe because i don't have its key?? Also in my car, engine check light is appearing, it's not blinking though. I think that due to this gas cap, the engine check light is appearing maybe. Also my car is burning a lot of fuel, the crazy thing is when i leave car at park in the night and again go back in the morning the fuel shows 1-2 needle less on the meter as compared to when i checked at night. Why is this happening and what should I do?? Thanks.
It sounds to me like you do not have the proper gas cap. Start by getting the right one for your car. A locking cap is fine, but you need the right fit so it seals closed. As to why the fuel gauge declines overnight, you either have a leak or someone is siphoning gas from your tank. Do you smell gas in the morning? Look for leaks. Get the tank pressure tested. It dangerous to drive if you have leaks! The check engine light may be related but that could be a different issue. You need it diagnosed by a mechanic.
@@ItsFixable ya, I have noticed sometimes smell of gas around the car, maybe its due to the gas cap, actually my gas cap never closes or seal properly, even after 2 3 clicks or infinite clicks you can just lift it up without even rotating it, it always remains open, maybe because I don't have keys to lock it. Just wanna make sure that can I buy a new gas cap without key or do I need to purchase with key gas cap only?
@@ItsFixable maybe fuel gauge is declining due to loose gas cap only, the gas is leaking from the cap only in form of vapours and is evaporating, I have heard many saying that loose gas cap maybe the reason for fuel leakage as well.
You don't have to have a locking cap. I don't think you'd see that much evaporation overnight. Check for leaks, and it would be really good to get the system pressure tested. If its leaking when your engine is running it's quite dangerous.
@@ItsFixable all right, I will get it checked. Thank you so much, loved all your content.
thanks for your time and effort preparing the video. its very helpful. Not a project I'm looking forward to but I gotta get er done.
You can do it!
Thanks Coach
Happy to help!
Thank you for a informative and calming video on the check engine light I’m over here freaking 😫out LOL
You're welcome!
After looking everywhere for a video where the housing is removed and cleaned, I found you. I own the exact same Remington 3.25 HP, 16”/41cm electric chain saw. Lucked into it for $12 at my local pawn shop. Feel like I stole it!! These things are mighty work horses for the suburban jungle and up keep of smaller rural plots. Thank you for being thorough enough to actually show a properly tensioned chain as well as removal and cleaning of the oil reservoir. My cap doesn’t have a bulb but the whole cap and neck depress so I assume that is the pumping action. Mine also has no spring clip on the drive shaft guard, it’s an actual screw. I have no idea if that means mine is newer or older, but hope I can find a manual for it soon. In the meantime, it’s cleaned, has a new chain properly tensioned, and oil in the reservoir ready for action. I have four nuisance trees to get rid of before they wreck my wooden fence. Cleaning and a new chain were step one. Wish me luck with the rest!
Definitely; best of luck! And I'm pleased you found the video useful.
Ground sunk because water issue,or some reason, but you need cement footers which should be 16"x 16"x 8" deep cement poured in ,cement foundation block set and leveled on wet cement, after cement dries stack foundation blocks or 4" or 2" blocks then shims. You do not use wood post close to ground possible termite problems. This by most inspection codes in case you ever sell the house and have an inspection. his way will work temporary
Question: When I was tightening the grommets, the top part of the rubber grommet sort of popped out. It feels like the screws will never tighten. And the seat moves a little bit. If I tighten them more will I break something?
There shouldn't be any movement. The grommets need to stay completely down against the ceramic and the screws should draw the bracket down tight against the ceramic too.
Thanks for the detail that was left out of the official Toto site instructions!!
Glad it was helpful!
I got a quote today, they want over $100k to "stabilize" the wall, plus 20k engineering fee, and 5% permit fee. No thank you I'm doing it myself, excellent help sir thank you.
I'm pleased you found this helpful.
You got a quote for that much ? Get different quotes. Were are you located? Maybe I could do better.
thanks bro exact fan i was working with
Cool! Glad I could help.
What about for newer model that no longer have a gas cap?
Adorable. You saved these two cuties from the landfill, thank you for your service.
The EPA thought of everything!
Could this stop your car from moving.? I'm currently stuck. I share the same situation. I went to the gas station earlier today and i went out to run an errand and the car was stuttering upon acceleration. I immediately stopped the car and turned off the engine. Happened shortly after i started the car again, then boom, my car is parked 3 blocks from where i live and it won't move at all now. I have a 2014 nissan rogue select and i have no idea how to diagnose this. Please help P.s: i did the steps you laid out to no avail
No, you have a more serious problem.
Talk about sweat equity AND construction know how! I'm so blown away by this project and the beautiful repairing you and Brandon did!
Did you have that outlet installed? I don't think that's normal.
I installed the outlet when I renovated the bathroom. I you like, you can watch that renovation here: ua-cam.com/video/Pjmr_V79-vE/v-deo.html
Can you still find TSP? In Arkansas all I can find is the TSP substitute. I'm not impressed by the substitute. Great video.
Some states, and even counties, regulate chemicals available for sale. I don't know about Arkansas, I'm in California and my county prevents a lot of products from being sold. But I can still get TSP!
Same thing happened with me today 😮😮 I just left the fuel station and engine light popup and my car was running good
"cap washing cage" is what its called
That was a great and simple job. Thanks!
After I tighten the two metal screws, the rubber grommets would come up a notch. I can't get the screws to tighten completely regardless how hard I push down. The brackets shakes a bit. What am I doing wrong ?
The grommets (anchors) shouldn't raise up. Did they fit snuggly into the ceramic's holes when first inserted? If they were lose, they aren't going to work. Perhaps there is something to wrap around them first so that they insert tightly. Then the screws should pinch downward on the bracket when they are tightened without lifting the grommets out.
Spunj
Beef up the security of your gas tank if you're going to replace your gas cap. Purchase a lock n key gas cap. You never know when you may be some random victim of idiots trying to pour something down the gas tank of random cars. It happens
I was scared to death to reshape my fedora. Thank you so much for showing how easy it can be done!
I'm pleased it was of help 🤠

Always buy Japan ( TOTO) brand when it comes to electronics or devices. They’re always 100% durable reliable. Japan cars also! ❤
yes...they have everything figured out. Great country to visit.
Why remove the inlet valve?
The valve wasn't shutting off and therefore need to be replaced.
Thanks for posting! This was a great video with simple instructions. I know I need to repaint the porch of my 100+ year old house, but it's intimidating! Can you tell me what that cute little scraper is that you used? We have many boards by the front stairs that need some attention. (They're definitely cupped, but I'm hoping they don't need to be replaced and can do with a simple scrape/filler/prime.) Can you also confirm that the DAP Acrylic Latex Caulk is paintable? Again, thanks so much!
I've had that little scraper for 30 yrs; there's no brand name on it. I'm sure you could fine something like it at the hardware or paint store. Yes, the DAP caulk I used is paintable. Just look at the labels carefully when you purchase because they also make some that are not, so don't get them confused. You can do it!
It looks as if the structure is being supported solely by the perimeter footing. That tells me that the builder did a piss poor job of compacting the site prior to framing.
Well, this house was built in 1975. back then it was common to simply scrape the ground and then start digging the foundation. So yes, you are probably right.
thanks. identifying parts is greatly appreciated
Glad it helped
Thank you! Super helpful!
