Thank you! I just had a fiberglass pool installed, with travertine coping. The project isn’t completed yet, (we are double the time that the contractor promised), but time isn’t even my big issue. I wish I would have seen this video before they installed it. I think they really messed it up… The overhang is all over the place, from 1” - 2 3/4”, they didn’t put a silicone bead between the pool and the coping, and the height of the coping is as off as the depth… in addition, they got chunks of mortar and dust in my pool that keeps clogging up my filter cartridges… Your video gives me the knowledge that I need to know how bad it is, I just don’t know what to do next 😢🤯
Love the video! I'm in SE Texas putting em in and all I've been doing is cantilever deck. I've wanted a customer to pick out some creamy coping, but I've only done it on gunite and I'm a little intimidated on fiberglass. With that intimidation I I've kinda been pricing customers out of it. Is that an illusion? Pool looks great and the coping is beautiful. Thanks for the tips! Subbed.
Your video is super helpful! So the one we are doing has an automatic pool cover but has the brackets for the coping to sit on. So if your using bullnose coping would you suggest doing a 90 degree coined cut , where a 45 at the cover end won't work?
Yeah that’s tuff. The best is to use square bull nose that way the round bull nose can but into it. Or use a couple of square BN on the Motor and the other side then run Round BN all the way across the cover. Hope that makes sense.
@@jonport_ sorry! I didn't see you message! I am! First pool we have done with automatic pool cover. So we were able to do a 45 degree coin cut and it worked.
How picky should you be on chips on travertine coping. I’m getting a pool built and the coping just got put in and there various size chips on the edging that over hangs the pool. I don’t want to be that guy so figured i would ask before bringing it up
It’s a little overkill, but to make sure that you have as little corrosion as possible. Believe it or not those electrical currents going through your materials is one of the biggest reasons why corrosion happens on salt water pools.
If you don't mind me asking, how much do you charge for that service? I am in Vancouver BC Canada and have owned a landscape construction company for 26 years but I have never installed these before. It will be pretty straightforward for me to install it but to price it out is a whole nother issue. And I mean for the labour, concrete and finishing and application of the coping. Not the actual coping itself as my customers have already purchased that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
If you have a table, cutting wet saw would be probably better. I’ve never cut 2 inch marble before. I have an a lot of tile marble and that’s all cut with wet sauce so I would assume it’s the same. I actually didn’t quite read your question properly. On that 9 inch Milwaukee you can hook water to it as well, and you should be able to find a blade that cuts marble.
Hello. If I want to tile some long exterior stairs with 3 cm travertine (there are about 3-5 pieces of 1.2 meters long x 34 cm wide on each step), do I need to use something additional besides the stronger adhesive? The weight of a 3 cm step is high and I don't know if the adhesive will bear its weight without deforming, until it hardens. I have level differences between 0.3 and 1.2 cm and I can't pour a shovel to straighten them, so everything will be done directly from the adhesive. Thanks.
Where the coping meets up to the autocover trough, were you at the same height or was the stone a little lower? I have the same setup as your video but the cover trough is about 1/2” higher… add more mortor to raise to same height??
Great video. Very informative especially how to lay coping over a pool cover track
I’m happy to help🙏🏻
Would love to see more coping fiberglass videos. Great work
Thanks Jerry. We’ll see.
Man. Im thinking about doing my own fiberglass pool install. This is a great video.

Would like for you to talk about the mortar type you are using, as well as show the mortar install process (at least on a few pieces of coping).
Ill see what i can do. I actually have a video that i have stored that goes into a lot more detail. I might post it ill have to double check
@jonport_ thanks! Great videos by the way

@@jonport_ that totally makes sense! We wanted the square but the client liked the bullnose, which makes for a different install 😬
Got it. What company are you with? Are you the owner?

How big are the chips?
About a half in or so there’s a couple
Are on the edge what are the grout goes
Yeah that’s normal. If you find enough travertine stone to make your project with out any chips you can call that a Miracal hahaha
@@jonport_ ok thanks I just didn’t want to make something out of nothing
Hi, I’m going step by step doing this from your video. What type of grout is being used? Thanks
Aweosme🙏🏻 i do t use grout. I but them tight. They end up about 1/16-1/8 gap at the end. It looks good and less maintenance
Please, we are installing coping ourselves. What material do use to fill the gap between the coping and fiberglass pool?
I don’t have anything because i run the coping to the shell with silicone no gaps. Haven’t found anything good.
thank you for responding, we’ve been running into issues with what to fill the gap with.
@luvflbchs2 is the coping already installed? Or are you referring to pools that are finished?
That looks great how do you backfill the shallow entrance pad and the ledges properly?
Thanks boss. We use #11s for under the steps and the rest is #5 or #8 so it’s drains good and holds the shell nice
What is the reason to individually bond every piece of auto cover metal, when they are all bolted together with metal fasteners?
It’s a little overkill, but to make sure that you have as little corrosion as possible. Believe it or not those electrical currents going through your materials is one of the biggest reasons why corrosion happens on salt water pools.
Do you finish your coping completely level or leaned out from the pool?
We stick it over 3/4 of an inch
@@jonport_ no i mean the grade on it. So you have the top of coping stones level or lean them either way?
@@DirtworksContracting little pitch away from the pool.

Just to install the bond beam and coping labor is 4k pulse material
I just do 2 days of labor to pour and lay coping
Do you seal the coping afterward?
Sealer wasn’t part of the deal but i would recommend it for sure.
What adhesive are you using to lock the stone to the fiberglass shell?
Silicone. It’s mainly used just to help a the water from seeping underneath the stones
What tools to use when cutting 2in Marble Paver Pool Coping?
I use a 9 inch concrete saw by Milwaukee and a finer grit grinding wheel on a angle grinder to touch up any imperfections on the cuts

Hello petrache, thanks for the question. What’s your sub-strait? Wood or concrete
@@jonport_ Concrete. 5 years old but in good condition.
You can do adhesive but ideally a quarter to half inch mortar bed to set it would be ideal
I’m bout to do one how much did you charge for that?
This was a year ago so I think 3500
Is there no grout between the tile seems
No there’s not. You can if you want I’d recommend 3/8- 1/2 but I don’t on the travertine because I like the water to be able to flow freely
Where the coping meets up to the autocover trough, were you at the same height or was the stone a little lower? I have the same setup as your video but the cover trough is about 1/2” higher… add more mortor to raise to same height??
The height of the auto cover is exactly 2 in off the top of the track. My stone is also 2 in so it lines up level. If that makes Sense
Hmm.. I’m 2-3/4” from top of track to top of trough cover. I wonder if there is different height risers for cover trough?
It all depends. What cover company are you using?
Automatic pool covers inc
Ok cool. I use the same. Fiberglass or vinyl liner? Sounds like a vinyl liner kit.
great video thank you!
Thank you. Im glad it helped
What product do you use to fill coping gaps?
I don’t. I Run the Pieces tight which leaves about an 1/8inch gap and room for water to flow in and out when people are swimming
@@jonport_ wouldn't that deteriorate the mortar bed?
Not really. Water will always be penetrating through the stone especially the travertine it’s very porous
is it me or the skimmer is not leveled ?
No, it’s not because of the shell. But it’s not that big a deal. We will level the lid so it all looks good.
