I actually nearly went through with doing this to my childhood Wii a couple years ago! No videos existed on the project, so I thought I could make it 😂. Went to GBATemp, BitBuilt, and was completely dead set on this project. I eventually decided that I wasn’t gonna risk breaking the system, and promptly gave up. However, I believe that there is a way to solder to the controller test points to use a BlueRetro adapter. Pretty cool that you actually tried this project!
wii consoles might be cheap right now, but they are discontinued. you should practice soldering on something cheaper. every time a wii breaks, it diminishes the overall supply of them and increases the price/demand
Just a tip for when you are soldering, I noticed that you had a ton of flux everywhere. It gets in the way, and some can cause shorts. You can just get a toothbrush with isopropyl alcohol and clean it. Nice video btw!
Thanks for the tip! Yeah, I was pretty generous with the flux application lol. If I had been a bit more conservative, I doubt the solder would’ve done as much damage to the power button. Glad you enjoyed!
Yeah, I honestly initially thought that the vid was gonna be 'bout how u modified ur wii so u can play paper mario till.. u broke it KEKW. But overall this is quite educational and could be used as a tutorial to do what u was aiming to do
if you ever get a wii without gamecube support, you can still play gamecube games with homebrew. heres how 1. homebrew your wii 2. download nintendont 3. download the iso of the gc game 4.nintendont can play with any bluetooth controller as long as you map the buttons
The better way to do this would be to just put in a working Wii mother board that already has the GameCube controller ports and memory card slots soldered on there.
I had the same Wii family edition as yours, so I tried to do the same thing you did following the guide on a site, but I burned everything I ended up buying a black Wii that was already backwards compatible
That’s great! Definitely check out the BitBuilt community. They are mostly about modding, but you’ll find some incredibly helpful people there who know a ton about every little detail of any retro console you can think of. If you ever need any help/advice, definitely check them out. In terms of gear, first I recommend you get a nice screwdriver/disassembly kit. Make sure it gives you a long enough screwdriver to reach into any screw hole (sounds oddly specific I know but not all screwdrivers fit into deep stuff like the Wii nunchuck). I wouldn’t recommend investing in a soldering iron unless you are sure this is something you want to pursue (since they cost a lot more than a screwdriver). If you want to see some guides/walkthroughs of repairs, check out the channel @OddTinkering because he’s the best there is and really has some creative techniques for restoring everything from a broken joystick to a yellowed shell. I’m really excited for you to pursue this hobby and I wish you the best! If you are a video game stuff collector it’s a great way to get some great pieces for cheap that you then get to use your artistry to make good as new! There’s a way to put art into anything you do and I know no process more satisfying than that.
I have a long story about my wii but I can relate to this video. I like these videos. Make more and you’ll hit it someday.
man what a rollercoaster! it all worked out in the end but that was one journey you took to get there lol!
I'm glad to see all that nintendo and soldering knowledge is paying off

I love this video, definitely subscribing.

Thanks! That’s exactly how I felt when making this video (like I said, there isn’t really a point lol)

You’re right, but for some reason I really wanted to do it the hard way…

True
@ I already have a backwards compatible Wii.
13:52 my wii had the same issue. It had an sd card in the dvd drive. After taking it out it worked again
