  • Cleaning - A Vintage - Daw Books - Paperback - Megaload - Part 1 - 70's + 80's SF + Fantasy!
    In this video I start going through and cleaning a vintage Daw Books SDF and Fantasy paperback collection. These books were first published in 1972 and are still going strong today.
    These are all from the first ten years or so of the publisher and contain a superb mixture of SF and Fantasy anthologies, Best of author collections, plus stand alone novels from, amongst others, Dean Koontz, Philip Jose Farmer, Philip K. Dick, Andre Norton, John Norman, John Brunner, Alan Burt Ackers, Lin Carter, E. C. Tubb, Sax Rohmer and many more!
    As an aside. I've had lots of people comment lately about my voice. The general consensus is that it's pretty soothing and actually has ASMR triggers in it! I know I speak quite softly but I'd never really considered this to be a reason why people subscribe, until now!
    If you enjoy this video, weather for the book cleaning or for it's ASMR qualities, please leave a comment below, thanks!

    I've been collecting DAW books since I was in my late teens, and I have never seen so many in one place. Fantastic collection you have there. Fun video. Thanks.

      Thanks, I'll try to post part 2 in a couple of weeks. Only today did I pull the lower grade copies out and add in the 50 or so I had already, they're looking good.👍🙂

      Lol, there's a couple in part 2! Been sorting and cataloguing these for a few weeks now, once you remove the lower grade copies, then mix in the 50 or so high grade ones I already had, they look pretty awesome. Will do follow up videos in due course🙂

    Patrick Rothfuss has a nice letter on his blog dedicated to Betsy W. from back when he was pushing for her to get an award. (Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear are fantastic novels, incidentally. It'll be interesting to see what Lin Manuel Miranda does with them in the adaptation.)

    Always in Bonus Books when I went to Plymouth. The indoor market there was good for books too.

      Bonus books was excellent, the stall inside the market went downhill rapidly from about 1985.

      @@JulesBurt Okay, thanks...The Panther sf books were fantastic. The layout of the titles were always at the top of the book, uncluttered. Leaving a lot of room for the cover art. I would hazard a guess and say that Panther sf books had the best artwork.

    How do you handle foxing?

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому +1

      It pretty difficult to remove tbh. I generally don't have a consistent way to remove it and usually give it a wipe with a soft cloth and that's it.

    • @alanzimmerman3289
      @alanzimmerman3289 5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the reply. It’s a bit unsightly but as long as it doesn’t spread to other books, as I have read it won’t, I will be content to live with it.
      Is it ok to bag paperbacks with foxing? I don’t want to add to the book’s misery.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому +1

      @alanzimmerman3289 I think it's fine to bag the books, even with foxing. Mould is a different story and paperback especially should be disposed of as this can easily spread.

    I love the way these DAW books look! Reminds me of the library of my third grade school. It was a small school in a small country town, so it was a small library that managed to cram a lot of books into itself. A lot of their books were older with many of them looking these and pans. Thinking about it now I wouldn't be surprised if many of them were in fact pan, daw and others of the like. Sorry for always leaving so many comments on a single video, but it's easier for me than trying to remember everything I want to say after the video is done.

    Some rough books have a charm to them especially in the case of hardbacks

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  3 роки тому +1

      True, but collectors strive for perfection!

    • @bunnygirlerika9489
      @bunnygirlerika9489 3 роки тому

      Jules Burt that is true, even I myself want my books to be as close to mint as possible. however some books I keep even after getting a better copy since their rough condition grew on me. Admittedly sometimes I also keep them out of sentimental value, like my first ever Edgar Allen Poe complete works book. The only thing I do hate my old Poe book though is that the library that original had it laminated the dust jacket but I get why they did it.

    • @JulesBurt
