    I am a 58-year-old single mom. I used your video to install my adjusted gate. Actually, I have two double gates spanning 10 feet. I had to make some adjustments to make it fit my terrain and my set up. Your videos have been very helpful. I sure would like to know Where you got the gate release. I have seen some but they’re only bare wires. I like the way yours looks. I agree with you about the screws on the latch. I was not very happy with the quality because the metal is so sturdy that there’s no way those screws are going in. I thought I would have to pre-drill but I wasn’t sure until I saw your video. Thank you again. The one thing I would say negative about the adjust-a-gate is if you ever have to get any of those screws for the hinges out they strip really badly. I wasn’t happy with that.
    I wasn’t able to relocate my hinge like I wanted to so I ended up having to relocate the piece that goes on the metal gate about an inch. And that worked. I also liked how you mentioned having both of the hinges facing upward. That has made a huge amount of difference for me. I wasn’t able to screw in the bottom 2 x 4 without taking the entire gate off and flipping it upside down if I would’ve follow their instructions there be no way I would’ve been able to secure that bottom 2 x 4.

    • @gfotinakes316
      @gfotinakes316  Рік тому

      I think you could use a "step drill" (Cheap at Harbour Freight) to drill a small hole. Then you could use some sheet metal screws or larger concrete screws that would just catch the edges of the metal hole and snug up tight. I would test all of this on a scrap piece of the 4x4 steel post to see if you get your desired results. Good luck! Let me know what you end up doing.

    • @gfotinakes316
      @gfotinakes316  Рік тому +1

      I drilled several holes into my 2x4. I then place it against the outer blocks and put a hole punch through the holes. I then struck the punch marking the holes centers on the blocks. The outer blocks on my walls were filled with concrete, not hollow so I used a concrete drill bit to drill into the blocks. I then put lead expansion sleeves into the holes. Finally I drove 1/4" lag screws with my impact driver into the sleeves. I am sure there are many other methods, but this one has worked for me over the years. Good luck!

I can't find very many holes to install through the spreader bars because I have to use both bars. And do the bars need to be flush at each end to the metal frames? And indeed, praise God for his Creation. Bless you!

    Hello George, Thanks for your helpful information. Please tell me how you made attachments to your block wall and stucco home, as my gate will have similar contact points. The inset pictured near the end shows horizontal strips attached to the face. Are these for support, aesthetics, or both? Your thoughts about a two rail vs three rail adjust-a-gate frame for a single 52" span?
    much appreciated

    • @gfotinakes316
      @gfotinakes316  3 роки тому +1

      On the block wall, I had a 2x4 already attached. I just screwed a new 2x4 on top of the existing board so I could use the adust-a-get hardware.
      If I had to do it for the first time, I would drill a hole big enough to accept the head of a large lag screw and the socket to drive the screw. This hole would go 1/2 the way into the 4x4 in three spaced locations. I would then drill the holes the rest of the way through with a drill size equal to the solid shank of the lag screw (without the threads). I would then drive the lag screws with a socket through the 4x4's while they are laying on your lawn until the points pop out about 1/8". You can then set the 4x4 against the block wall, level it up for vertical, then tap each lag screw head with a hammer to mark a spot on the blocks. It is best if this part of the wall is filled with concrete. You will need to buy expansion hardware (I like lead over plastic) large enough to accept your lag screw threads. Use a concrete drill bit to bore into your block wall, then tap the hardware into the holes. Now drive your lag screws into the hardware. On the stucco side, you can use the same method only you should find wood in the corner of your house so the concrete drill need only break through the stucco and the lag screws can go right into the wood. (Remember a pilot hole into the wood).
      I cut the horizontal strips to hide any light showing through on either side. I am glad I did because even after using kiln-dried redwood and 3 coats of paint, the lumber shrank in size, and light would show.
      Disclaimer... I am only a retired science teacher with handyman skills so ask folks at the hardware store and see if any are contractors that might give you other ideas.
      By the way, what state are you in? I like to put a pin in my map for all of my replies. Take care!

I found the flat paint did not work because if you rubbed, even your hand against it, it would leave a mark. I then went over it with Behr Premium Plus Exterior Semi-gloss enamel. Keep in mind if your wood is rough and shows any imperfections, the semi-gloss will enhance those imperfections and a flat will hide them more.

    How did you mount the 2x4's to the block wall

    • @gfotinakes316
      @gfotinakes316  2 місяці тому

      1. I drilled a 1/2" holes about 1/2" deep into the 2x4 with a forsner bit.
      2. I then drilled a 3/8" hole through the 2x4 in the center of the 1/2" holes.
      3. I then set the 2x4 up to the block wall.
      4. I then took a 3/8" masonry drill bit set it into each hole of the 2x4 and drilled enough to make a mark into the block.
      5. I now took the masonry bit and bored deep enough into the block to set a lead insert into each hole.
      6. I now took 3/8" lag bolts and drove them with my drill driver through the 2x4 holes and into the lead inserts until they were snug. ( Make sure you buy bolts long enough to go into the lead insert and through the 2x4).
      7. NOTE: Several different types of anchors could go into your block wall holes, ask your local hardware person to explain the positive and negative of each type. You may want to try drilling these holes at places in the block filled with concrete. Usually, this will be near the bottom and at block cement joint seams. Good luck, let me know how it goes.

      That is a good idea. I had considered doing that but I "Chickened out" thinking I might mess up the job. By the way, what state are you in? I like to put a pin in my map for all of my replies. Take care!

      What kind of problems are you having, maybe I can help.

    The point of the direction of the pins is so that thieves can’t just lift your gate and rob you… but whatever 🤷🏽‍♂️

      I know the pin direction means greater security. I have lived on my cul-de-sac for 48 years and we have not had crime issues, so I wanted the ease of gate removal for future painting and repairs. Thanks for your comment.
