  • It's hard to catch a pompano on Oak Island in January. However, it's pretty easy to catch a shark in July. Knowing what fish are in the surf and which fish are not will help you target your species. It will help you select the right rig and the right bait to catch the right fish. In this video, we will take a month by month look at what fish we caught in 2021. Along with showing you the fish, we will show you the bait and the rigs we used to catch each fish. The information in this video will surely help you catch more fish in 2022!

Great video. Appreciate you taking the time to make this (a full year). I've been fishing OKI area for almost 40 years so and shared many of the same fish you are here. Wishing you tight lines in 2022!

Thanks for a great video. I get out to your area a few times a year here lately and usually catch something. It may not be a huge catch, but at least I don't usually get skunked. I've recently started camping in the area, because there are barely any motels that allow you to bring a boat trailer. I'm glad you broke this down by the month. It really helps. Hope to be back out there soon. Thanks again.

2:18 omg all this time I was catching Whiting and thinking they were just immature red drum?

If there are no tail spots and there is a little beard, they’re probably whiting. Good fish tacos!

@@SandsintheSurf here I thought the red drum might just develop a spot later, learned something new. My girlfriend will be very disappointed to learn I threw them back for no reason. Thanks!

Don't mean to sound like a noob. I'm heading to oak island at the end of this month. I want to inlet fish and some surf fishing. I will have a cast net as well. What size weights and what liters do I need to buy? Awesome videos btw I'm definitely subscribing.

In the surf, I like heavier weights and smaller hooks. So I throw 4 oz pyramid weights with either 1/0 hooks if I’m using shrimp, or 3/0 hooks if I’m using live finger mullet. I do about the same I. The creeks and ICW but use less weight, maybe 2 oz. I tend to go heavier on my line than most. 25lb in the surf

Puffers are delicious! We sold them in the 60s in my Dad's store as sugar fish.

Awesome video. Coming down in September to do some fishing. From one fisherman to another do you have any spots? 🤣

The good news is, in September they’re all good. Anyplace you can find bait in the surf, net some and fish those live finger mullet.
