    Cool videos. Do you fish the point, on your side facing Holden beach?

    I'm headed there in June. Any recommendations for bait & locations? Pure novice here!! Been watching your videos for awhile, but realized today that I had not subscribed, so I fixed that too! Thanks!

      June should be a good month with a few options. The blues should be around. Cut bait or finger mullet will get them. Or small hooks in the wash with live sand fleas should get you pompano. Whiting on fresh shrimp is another option.

    Been fishing the NC coast for almost 30 years. Use the Palomar knot almost exclusively.

    The best knot for braid to mono is the FG Knot.
    It's one of the tougher knots to learn but a lot better then that surgeon crap and will be pretty easy once you get the knack for it.
    Also,I start with the lightest weight when bottom fishing,usually a 1oz.,If it rolls around fine,it's fishing more area but if it's getting swept away within a minute of casting then I bump it up.The lighter weight gives a easier/quicker hook set.

      rider660r true, also some like uni to uni. I mentioned the surgeons knot because of it’s simplicity for someone just starting to learn knots.

      @@SandsintheSurf I get the simplicity,but Uni is ok for light line (IMO #10 and under).Heavier line it will catch on the guides and has broken many guides that way.It will also tear hide off your thumb if you're using a conventional/bait caster reel with a mono leader 2-3-or4x as long as your rod and you don't spool it right (either with the knot to the far left or right on the spool) and/or don't get your thumb out of the way soon enough.
      The FG has the smallest dia there is in a knot,doesn't catch guides and won't rip hide off your fingers.It works like chinese finger cuffs or cable becky's to jig out cable,the more you pull the tighter it'll get.
      It isn't an easy knot to tie at first but once you get the hang of it it can be tied about as fast as trying to tie a uni to uni.

    Actually this was a very informative video, wish I had found it oh lets say about 9 years and about $800 worth of gear ago haha. I have switched from my 12 foot rod with an 8000 series reel on it to a 9 footer with a 4000-5000 series reel. I have gone from buying premade rigs to making my own double dropper rigs with at most a small orange or yellow pompano float on it.

    Hey - its Feb... so is there ANY good place to surf around oak island in Feb? Any creeks/holes/marshy areas? Or just stay inside and watch a good movie maybe? :)

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  4 роки тому

      Rob Taylor interestingly enough, they run several of the local “learn to fish” classes in Feb. Take a class, watch some videos, get the gear ready because in March it starts to turn around.

    Great video- thank you! How much does the recent beach re-nourishment at OKI affect the structure and fishing?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  4 роки тому +1

      stick4793 that’s a good question. They do did some holes but I don’t think the last as long as one that forms naturally. Last year I caught a really nice pompano right next to a backhoe digging in the sand. Not sure the two were related but at least the fish didn’t seem to mind the machine. At the same time, I had a hard time finding sand fleas and was told the reason was because of the sand they brought in.

    • @rider660r
      @rider660r 4 роки тому

      Beach re-nourishment is the worst thing for fishing.It destroys the surf fishing wherever that takes place, because all that sand snuffs out the benthic, bottom dwelling organisms, which are the basis of the food chain of the sea, and that place will be a biological desert for at least a year or two.You will get some fish here and there but it will not be anything like it was before.
      And it's also a waste of taxpayers $$....
