  • Today, we set out to target one of our favorite fish to catch, cook and eat. The Black Drum! We will set off in a Kayak and fish the waters of the Davis Canal right here on Oak Island, NC. We'll talk about the canal, places to launch your kayak, places to search for black drum and the right bait and rig to hook in a big, slot, fighting black drum! We'll even show you a new recipe that will go great with any fish.

    Thanks for sharing your local knowledge..& Map.Davis looks like a good spot to find some good fish wintering over..will bring the kayak next ti.e I'm in the area .if the weather is nice.last black drum I cooked,I believe it was the 1st too,had some sort of long thin worm looking things in the meat.ever see anything like that?I haven't seen it before or since in any species of fish.cooked it up anyway& probably would have been fine to eat but was over it by that time .My dog enjoyed it..With some white rice.caught it in late Nov -December .surf side of New river inlet,N.Topsail a long time ago.have released a few between now and then..still remembering the worms.I take it there were no keeper crabs that day.Didn't see one in the oven.fished the surf over thanksgiving.26th & 27th were the nicest days..wasn't much sign of life.Didn't take shrimp and the bait in the surf was few & far between.got 1 good thump on a jig 3rd cast or so..late morning clear water,rising tide.beautiful day.Accepted the skunk& kicked the soccer ball around with my daughter for a cpl hrs.did have an artificial on standby.Just in case something came through.no dice.pier people were trying their best .a few small whiting was about it.fun& relaxing day s anyway.that's the most important thing..thx again.
    PS.this video was 11 days ago?wondering how you post videos. Timeframe.thx

      I’ve heard the larger black drum can have worms but I’ve not see any in the smaller ones I catch. I did catch an amber jack that had worms. I was on a charter so the guy cleaned the fish for me. He cut out the parts with the worms and gave me the rest.

    Great video. Steve has a nice kayak. I think I seen him in one of your videos. He also has a UA-cam channel.

      Yep, he just happened to be at one of the piers when I was there so we got a chance to meet. He does a lot of Oak Island specific vids but also others as well.

      Fish early morning or late afternoon. Find a creek mouth with a falling tide running out of the grass.

      Ha, absolutely. You’ll notice in the video I reach up and tighten it a few times. Didn’t realize it needed it when I was catching those little croaker.

    Just found your channel. Awesome stuff. I am coming to Holden Beach on the 25th of this month. Staying on highpoint drive, any help would be greatly appreciated. Kayaking the ICW.

      If your down on the west end of Holden, there are so many good creeks and marsh areas to fish. I’d definitely kayak down that way.

      The fishing is best in the fall but I’ve caught decent drum in Davis in the summer as well.

    Hey Ian! Im currently fishing a bridge that crosses davis canal. You may of heard of it its called cross over trail. Any tips for catching some more game fish like trout,drum and flounder? We have multiple rods and rigs.

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  2 роки тому

      A bottom rig with fresh shrimp should get you a decent black drum there, however you’ll probably have to go through a lot of pesky croaker to get there. I’d also try tossing soft plastics on a jig head for trout, especially early morning. Another option is live shrimp on a popping cork, again in the morning.

      @@eat2144 the tackle shop Dutchman’s Creek usually sells them. Call first and ask if they have any before you go. Or if they have fiddler crabs, those work great for black drum.
