Luis Sousa We’ve had the euro Passat but it couldn’t compete with the mainstream Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Too small and too expensive, VW was forced to come up with a bigger locally produced Passat that would sell better. The US Passat now sells in of course America, but also in Canada, Mexico, Middle East, South Korea.
mercguy658 The Euro Passat isn't exactly small. If you've ever been in one you'll know it's very spacious and very high quality. It has more than enough space for families that need a car like that. I think cost contraints is the reason you guys don't get the Euro Passat. The quality and technology will make it too pricey. But it's pricey for a reason. The Euro Passat easily competes with the 3 series and C Class and A4. You may as well just get the Euro Passat over an A4. However, people always take the Audi badge over the VW one even though the Passat is just as good.
SDav21 What qualities are better on the B8? What technologies can you get on the euro model that you cannot get on the NMS? I sat in the euro and haven’t seen anything really much different when it comes to equipment. And the euro Passat is a lot smaller, it’s a fact.
Yes, Passat the whole way! Love my 2015 2.0 Turbo! Never have had a problem with it unlike other cars i’ve owned! Passat has a much more classier look than than the Sonata...
I have a 2016 VW Passat R line I picked up with 34k miles on her and she now has 53k and a fresh set of tires on her and she handles and drives great imo. I’ll admit to being a VW guy as I have owned 5 buses and 8 bugs over the years. I have a 65 bug I am restoring to stock and a 67 I am doing a sleeper build on.
Andy Jung you are the one who is kidding. Korean cars are no where close to german cars. Unless you're referring to some of their designs then you are right
It sure looked like one guy can launch and the other can’t. It’s obvious Sonata is a faster car, but it has a lot more power. It’s also cheaper (MSRP), plus you can get good discounts and rebates, making it a lot cheaper. Plus it has 10 year warranty and requires regular gas, unlike the VW that requires premium. Plus VW is a German car. It comes with German car maintenance. That means reliability and prices. But it’s a good car and the engine is great and has great low end torque. We bought a new fully loaded Sonata 2.4 Limited with both packages for $22k (33k MSRP). It was a steal. Very happy with it. If you put it in Sport mode it makes a big difference. Not sure if they used Sport mode in this video. Both great cars. We made our choice.
What we learned is that Andre is by far a better drag racer than Nathan. Also since the 2018 Passat has a larger engine I would expect it to be more competitive.
My Dad owns a 17 Passat (on my recommendation) and says it's the best car he's ever owned. Besides the fact that my dad is NOT a techie and did not like all the features being thrown "in your face", the Sonata barely fit in the garage as compared to the Passat. If the Sonata was slightly smaller, he might have gotten it instead.
Yes love my 2017 passat se. Before had a 2012 Audi a4 which was a beast I wish I could race against it but she blew up. The Passat is a sleeper for sure
I had a chance to drive the 3.6L Passat, I think it was a 2012. Very fast. There was plenty of throttle left at 120mph @3800 rpm but the speed gov kicked in
Still prefer my B5 Passat with AWD a manual trans a switch to turn off traction control leather seats, 4 link suspension all around with anti-roll bars and coilovers.... factory.
thing is that, the hyundai has a detuned theta engine.. the generation before the LF (or before 2015, so 2014 and under) had the same engine but it was tuned for high rpm boost so it got 274HP. the newer sonata aimed for lower rpm range around 3500 rpm.. i have a 2015 and it moves! my ECU got upgraded 50-60 hp with a 500$ ecu remap and it dominates the streets! faster than golf R's, c43, and others
Something is wrong with Hyundai's horsepower ratings. They always have competitive claimed ratings but they're never as fast as the cars in their class that have less power. Genesis G80 is a prime example, as is the sister company's Kia Stinger. The 2.0T Hyundai engine is just a dog.
David Nacson were talking about grandpa cars here...lmao lets argue about who's grandma is sexier....fucken point less.....although i personally prefer that vr6 chewbacca roar........
The Passat looks much more elegant and clean. That’s why they style it that way to keep it looking fresh even in the future so it doesn’t look outdated. Most Hyundai’s from 2014 and below are starting to show age.
Jayden W. No, definitely no for vw design...you can called it classic whatsoever but here in my country, vw car is boring..they look the same all the way
William Doubles According to Consumer Reports audi was third place In reliability for many years before this current year.....Buick dropped audi to 4th place....germans are generally In the middle for reliability...FCA is always died last............
Well .. that's great, but you forgot to mention one thing - look around you on the road, how many 2005 VWs do you see and how many Hyundais? I feel like the only hyundai worth getting is the Genesis and Equus. Same think with the Passat, unless you go SEL Premium, get a used car and save for the top of the line, never really understood why somebody buys brand new, under equipped car.
The Passat with the 1.8 Liter turbo-engine gets the same gas mileage as the 2018 Honda Accord with the bigger 2.0 Liter turbo-engine, along with more horsepower and torque paired with the 10 speed automatic transmission.
That Passat is a SE with Tech Package & that's why $28k or else it would be SE for $26 and if you have a great negotiating skill, you may get it for $24k* out the door price.
My 2013 Sonata SE has 114000 miles on it. Cheapest car to maintain I've ever had. Oil changes (which I do ), 2 sets of tires, 2 sets of front brakes, rear still original. I'll buy another before i spend money on a passat or jetta.
If you brake torque the Sonata you kill its power, the computer cuts back the boost and limits it to like 10 pounds causing a really slow launch. Just let it idle and flat punch it off the line and it will burn off the tires all the way across an intersection as it strongly takes off. The Sonata will destroy the Passat if you know how to drive. You guys wrecked this race by not knowing what you were doing.
It’s a matter of gear ratios and Hyundai’s soft throttle mapping. The Passat has a lower final drive then the Hyundai, combined with the lower weight it has a small advantage. The vw has a peaky engine calibration while the sonata is smoother. The sonata is faster than the Passat down the 1/4 no doubt. Driver also makes a huge difference.
FYI, the exhaust manifold is cast into the cylinder head. The turbo bolts on directly to the exhaust. This virtually removes turbo lag. ua-cam.com/video/daH1Q6MCH8A/v-deo.html
That track is where I go cart. imi Motorsports is best place for everything. Dirt bikeing, drifting, testing out cars, and of course one of the best gocart tracks ever.
People who buy sedans want good performance... but they really dont care to drag race from every traffic light. They want economy and reliability foremost. In that respect Hyundai wins this competition.
Yes the Sonata takes time to spool up and Hyundai suspensions are still behind most (including VW) major auto makers. As far as appearance the Sonata has way too much grill although some viewing angles are pleasant. The doors on the Passat are cast from a single piece of steel in a mold (no spot welds which translates to strength in impacts).
I own a passat st it's way faster than Hyundai and VW passat and you guys say that the Hyundai has a bigger engine and lighter than the passat my engine bigger and my car has sun roof and turbo and its grey and I have prado land cruiser
The Sonata cannot be brake torqued like that, it limits boost to 10 psi when you do that and kills power like crazy. If they would have just flat punched it then it would have been MUCH quicker off the line. My 2018 will blow the tires off all the way across the street, not barely take off like the one in the video did. Lack of knowledge wrecked the results here.
The Hyundai should have done a lot better with 65 more horses and around 60 extra torque. I think the Sonata would be a lot quicker with more break in miles!
I think the extra $3-7,000 you are forced to pay for things like traction control and other driver assist nannies are a waste. You only need ABS. TC does all the wrong things if you happen to start losing traction and know how to correct with throttle and counter steering. These cars should have at least a 2.0 turbo or a na v6, period. With gas so cheap, I would rather have horsepower than mpg's. The problem is American buyers like tech, nannies, and prius like mileage. It's more about the Amercan culture, unfortunately.
Have the same VW and I gotta say the TC is straight BS. Not saying the VW is that quick (it's not really), but you can't turn off TC and the lower end torque suffers. I am not sure if the Sonata has perm TC though. Just complaining lol
The Passat looks much more elegant and clean. That’s why they style it that way to keep it looking fresh even in the future so it doesn’t look outdated. Most Hyundai’s from 2014 and below are starting to show age.
Dewey AI If you take a look at a 2007 Volkswagen Passat, and take a look at a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. Which one looks more outdated? Clearly the Hyundai. The Volkswagen just has a much more mature styling that was designed to age well. And in my opinion, and in the opinion of very many others. It has..
Jayden W. That (2007) Passat isnt a bad looking car, the Sonata is however the better looking of the 2. Which design has aged better? You say the Passat, I say I'm not sure. As it relates to these two though, I still say the VW looks outdated from the outset. You say otherwise, cant fight you for your opinion. But IMO, this current passat is bland ans boring and the design left the gate with a handicap, it looks outdated. Looks like every other vw of the past 6 or so years. Oh btw, I'm not in any way a Hyundai fanboy (if such a thing exists)
Both good cars, although if I bought a Passat to keep, I would definitely buy an extended warranty. Resale on Hyundai still is bad, but improving. An off lease Hyundai would be a steal to buy........:)
When Nathan got into the Passat, the weight advantage vanished....
Vincent Kecer lmao
Vincent Kecer lol
Vincent Kecer
agree
You haven’t count his breakfast
Hahahahaha
We owned a Passat 1.8T and you're right, lots of torque! Pulls like a diesel on the low end. VW makes a great car when it's under warranty.
Exactly, get rid of it before it's out of warranty...
Yeah cause vw put all the torque down @ 1800 rpm
Jonathan Powers and ONLY when it's under warranty. Since the non-stop repairs are free of cost.
And its why I bought sonata for its 10 year monster warranty.
My passat wagon has 200k on it and it's been dead reliable.
the Passat now comes standard with 2.0T instead of 1.8T. you can also get the V6 model
Sonata/Passat, 200 lb difference, Nathan/Andrei, another 200lb difference...
it's incredible how much nicer the european passat is, I think volkswagen doesn't want to sell cars in america
Luis Sousa We’ve had the euro Passat but it couldn’t compete with the mainstream Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Too small and too expensive, VW was forced to come up with a bigger locally produced Passat that would sell better. The US Passat now sells in of course America, but also in Canada, Mexico, Middle East, South Korea.
so..did it work??? I don't think so, those japanese models continue to outsell de vw
mercguy658 The Euro Passat isn't exactly small. If you've ever been in one you'll know it's very spacious and very high quality. It has more than enough space for families that need a car like that. WV dont want to sell european version for american price in USA!! they would have too much loses
Yes, Passat the whole way! Love my 2015 2.0 Turbo! Never have had a problem with it unlike other cars i’ve owned! Passat has a much more classier look than than the Sonata...
Excellent review on the Passat and the Sonata I couldn’t agree more and I’m gonna subscribe to your channel and watch you guys more often
2:42 lmao! "did u really torque it hard?" sounded like a little kid XD
We've known Nathan is a terrible driver 😂
china car = korea car
nope. Are you kidding me? Korean cars are near German cars.
Guy Good 아재 정신차리세요ㅋㅋ
SM B ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Andy Jung you are the one who is kidding. Korean cars are no where close to german cars. Unless you're referring to some of their designs then you are right
Passat....always the vw wins over any other equivalent...😍
Passat is really a rocket car i m aslo vw passat user😁😁 at 8 years
It sure looked like one guy can launch and the other can’t. It’s obvious Sonata is a faster car, but it has a lot more power. vw already replace that 1.8t with 2.0t . why test the old one?
Y Brent 3.6 V6 Passat would wreck that Hyundai...
Good luck trying to find one ;(
You're thinking of the wrong 1.8t lol. 20v turbo vs 16v tsi gen 3 1.8t
Joe 1.8 is better
What we learned is that Andre is by far a better drag racer than Nathan. Also since the 2018 Passat has a larger engine I would expect it to be more competitive.
This is also the base 2017 Passat engine vs. the optional Sonata engine. So it's not really apples to apples in terms of engine options.
The sonata has the larger engine
My Dad owns a 17 Passat (on my recommendation) and says it's the best car he's ever owned. Besides the fact that my dad is NOT a techie and did not like all the features being thrown "in your face", the Sonata barely fit in the garage as compared to the Passat. If the Sonata was slightly smaller, he might have gotten it instead.
I drove a VW Passat as a loaner car and I thought it was really underpowered for such a large car.
Its 3200 lbs so it's not big lol it keeps up with cars with 60 hp advantages and gets 35 mpg atheist mine does
Yes love my 2017 passat se. Before had a 2012 Audi a4 which was a beast I wish I could race against it but she blew up. The Passat is a sleeper for sure
I'd still probably buy the Hyundai. The Passat's aesthetics are about as intriguing as a cinder block. I'm sure it's a great car though.
Gross, "Korean styling". It will look like 100% garbage in 3 years. VW will be a classic looker in 15 years.
I had a chance to drive the 3.6L Passat, I think it was a 2012. Very fast. There was plenty of throttle left at 120mph @3800 rpm but the speed gov kicked in
I made the body for this Sonata. I been working at the plant for 14 years. 💪💪💪
so, guys. is this the latest passat 2017 for US? and what about passat b8?
Nathan's Weight is the issue :D
Hi producer, do u have any comments on the Vw Tiguan 1.4 tsi? Can the 1.4 engine carry the big body?
Still prefer my B5 Passat with AWD a manual trans a switch to turn off traction control leather seats, 4 link suspension all around with anti-roll bars and coilovers.... factory.
KYoss68 you must be putting your mechanics kids through college.
Love Passats have 3. One is a 1.8t one is the V6 and the other is the W8
They are all in bad condition tho have to fix them up
thing is that, the hyundai has a detuned theta engine.. the generation before the LF (or before 2015, so 2014 and under) had the same engine but it was tuned for high rpm boost so it got 274HP. the newer sonata aimed for lower rpm range around 3500 rpm.. i have a 2015 and it moves! my ECU got upgraded 50-60 hp with a 500$ ecu remap and it dominates the streets! faster than golf R's, c43, and others

Old Veloster turbo being a good example.....
2.0T vs 1.8T which do you think is gonna win?
The Sonata wins hands down. VW have bland interiors and exteriors. I know I'm offending VW owners but that's the truth.
David Nacson were talking about grandpa cars here...lmao lets argue about who's grandma is sexier....fucken point less.....although i personally prefer that vr6 chewbacca roar........
Miguel Garcia Lol. You are right both cars are boring.
David Nacson I only got it because I got a really good deal
The Passat looks much more elegant and clean. That’s why they style it that way to keep it looking fresh even in the future so it doesn’t look outdated. Most Hyundai’s from 2014 and below are starting to show age.
Jayden W. No, definitely no for vw design...you can called it classic whatsoever but here in my country, vw car is boring..they look the same all the way
why not 2.0 tsi + DSG?
Sonata for me has way too much torque steer, it feels shaky when you push it
For me, i will take the Hyundai every day. Too much better 👍
No no. In Korea we call it the dead car.
다팔림아우디 why?
Why is your 2017 vw passat different from our 2017 passat?
Fortune Fortune This is New Midsize Sedan, Passat from USA for US, Canadian, Mexican and South Korean market.
Stage 1 that ea888 engine you're gonna smoke every sedan in that segment
FACTS!
Facts!
I drag race a Hyundai Sonata with my Passat 2.0 and I gave it a whole car length
It's not a fair race get the 2.0t passat it will smoke it
I agree , 2.0 Passat destroy the Korean Car
they are comparing cars with prices buddy think again
Rade Khater theirs also a 3.6L V6 option with 280hp.
S G there hasnt been that version for years now idiot
Strawberry Kisses You're wrong bud!
245HP vs 170HP, and difference is so tight ? Sonata has NOT 245HP, or it is much heavier.
vw underrates there cars too it’s more like 200
The 2.0t jetta gli could Wipe it's ass with that Hyundai.
Joe S. LMFAO! Correct! Why in the hell would they put a shitty Hyundai 2.0 against a Passat 1.8 anyways?
Joe S. And the genesis can wipe its ass with the gli lmao
@@fishingstix610 and the golf can wipe its ass with the genesis
Timbo TLGM no it cant u must be on crack is a v6 turbo dumbass
It boils down to German engineering or Korean engineering. It's up to you.
Funny. Kia/ Hyundai are run by German executives
William Doubles According to Consumer Reports audi was third place In reliability for many years before this current year.....Buick dropped audi to 4th place....germans are generally In the middle for reliability...FCA is always died last............
Miguel Garcia Consumer Reports has Audi at 4th place. KIA is 3rd place.
Monsieur Africain thank you for the correction is this the most recent data for 2017??
Miguel Garcia yep it's from a week or two weeks ago from Consumer Reports. It's on their UA-cam channel.
Well .. that's great, but you forgot to mention one thing - look around you on the road, how many 2005 VWs do you see and how many Hyundais? I feel like the only hyundai worth getting is the Genesis and Equus. Same think with the Passat, unless you go SEL Premium, get a used car and save for the top of the line, never really understood why somebody buys brand new, under equipped car.
still34u...
Don't know where u live but in Midwest USA there are lots of Hyundai cars from the mid and early 2000s.
I’ve seen a ton of 10+ yr old Hyundai’s still going strong in my area, I also live in the Midwest.
2007/2008 Hyundai accents some of the best cheap cars u can get lol seen em for under 3grand with less than 100k miles on em
The Passat with the 1.8 Liter turbo-engine gets the same gas mileage as the 2018 Honda Accord with the bigger 2.0 Liter turbo-engine, along with more horsepower and torque paired with the 10 speed automatic transmission.
Tim Joseph yea but it costs wayyyy less also
That Passat is a SE with Tech Package & that's why $28k or else it would be SE for $26 and if you have a great negotiating skill, you may get it for $24k* out the door price.
Did you guys run full quarter mile runs?
What do you think of new Sonata design? Some Korean say 'Terrible...' How about you?
A comparison of cars I can actually afford. Nice. I actually have a '17 Sonata sport, 4cyl
And its slow
My 2013 Sonata SE has 114000 miles on it. Cheapest car to maintain I've ever had. Oil changes (which I do ), 2 sets of tires, 2 sets of front brakes, rear still original. I'll buy another before i spend money on a passat or jetta.
Which Passat is it? I've never seen it before.
If you brake torque the Sonata you kill its power, the computer cuts back the boost and limits it to like 10 pounds causing a really slow launch. Just let it idle and flat punch it off the line and it will burn off the tires all the way across an intersection as it strongly takes off.
With a good tune the Hyundai would probably beat an sti in a drag race lol
with a good tune a 1974 beetle will smoke a gtr
With a good tune the sti would smoke the Hyundai again
That track is where I go cart. imi Motorsports is best place for everything. Dirt bikeing, drifting, testing out cars, and of course one of the best gocart tracks ever.
love the look of the new sonata
Mike Harris yea looks like an Audi! Hyundai I thought the grill was the only thing they stole. Now they taking the body too.
Sello Mamba yeah but everybody's doing that except maybe bmw
Sello Mamba lol they share designer you miserable idiot
jygssd11 yo mama miserable for having you
Mike Harris well at least I'm not motherless like you
Just because vw has lunch control and sonata hasn't..
GDi is same as Mitsubishi?
People who buy sedans want good performance... but they really dont care to drag race from every traffic light. They want economy and reliability foremost.
In that respect Hyundai wins this competition.
Not impressed with the new sonata. The 2011 models had 274 hp and 33mpg highway. Why would they now make less power and be more inefficient?
Sam 2011 models looked better imo
Wheel spin was a major problem
The yf sonata's were very peaky, whereas the newly refined 2.0t's power curve is much more flat
Because they got sued for misrepresenting car consumption numbers :)
ghd bfb they couldve made an AWD version and 3.0t
Yes the Sonata takes time to spool up and Hyundai suspensions are still behind most (including VW) major auto makers. As far as appearance the Sonata has way too much grill although some viewing angles are pleasant. The doors on the Passat are cast from a single piece of steel in a mold (no spot welds which translates to strength in impacts).
I think Nathan was not on sporting mode on both cars , because he never knew how to use it
What kind of Passat is that?
Please do a review on silently launched 2018 Passat 2.O T
I have a 2.0t passat lots of fun.
sonata are bigger engine and lighter than passat
DSG vs AT is the main difference. No energy lose during transmission.
So it means Nathan is heavier, and Russian wins?
I own a passat st it's way faster than Hyundai and VW passat and you guys say that the Hyundai has a bigger engine and lighter than the passat my engine bigger and my car has sun roof and turbo and its grey and I have prado land cruiser
Its not the horse .. its the rider 😂👍🏻
nice run guys both good cars
Because we drive like this on a daily basis.
Unfair, it should be 2.0T passat not 1.8
The Sonata cannot be brake torqued like that, it limits boost to 10 psi when you do that and kills power like crazy. If they would have just flat punched it then it would have been MUCH quicker off the line. My 2018 will blow the tires off all the way across the street, not barely take off like the one in the video did. Lack of knowledge wrecked the results here.
And the sonata definitely looks way more attractive then the passat
this clearly shows it's not about the car but the driver... learn to drag race before you upload these important videos man.
I have a sonata. Not buying one again. I did like the 18 currently with the 17 but they aren't so good in the end.
The Passat GT OBLITERATES that slow Hyundai on the drag strip and at the race track.
The 2nd race, the Volkswagen simply couldn't passat
The Hyundai should have done a lot better with 65 more horses and around 60 extra torque. I think the Sonata would be a lot quicker with more break in miles!
By the way, that passat is Twincharged ( TSI )
If you Torque brake the Sonata it'll cut boost, bad. My 2017 spins it's ass off launched correctly
Now THAT'S a race!
السبب الدب هو اللي خلى السيارتين يخسرون 😂
Cool thanks
ههههههه والله انك صادق

I think the extra $3-7,000 you are forced to pay for things like traction control and other driver assist nannies are a waste. You only need ABS. Love my 2016 passat s, less tech and weight makes them pretty fun and I get 39 mpg highway all day.
I will never understand why in America a actually VW Jetta is called Passat???
but why
2:25 real video starts
I love VW cars, I just like don’t like them when they’re in the dealer for warranty service. Which is a lot. So I bought a boring Toyota.
That passat is one boring looking car.
it is a very elegant and classy car for a family, children like you should stick to cheap Korean plastics
The Passat looks much more elegant and clean. That’s why they style it that way to keep it looking fresh even in the future so it doesn’t look outdated. Most Hyundai’s from 2014 and below are starting to show age.
Jayden W. Thats a matter of opinion. In my opinion it already looks outdated. But to each their own.

that passat pretty quick put the camry xse vs passat let's see who wins i bet the passat beats the xse
All passat has the 1.8T, you have to pay extra for the 2.0T in sonata
I can’t wait for the redesign Passat
Both good cars, although if I bought a Passat to keep, I would definitely buy an extended warranty. Resale on Hyundai still is bad, but improving. An off lease Hyundai would be a steal to buy........:)
Conclusion: German HP > Korean HP
TheGbizaille WRONG YOU LOSER!💯
TheGbizaille ...
How did you reach that conclusion?
TheGbizaille True, Korea is not yet facing Germany.
Next time use passat 2 liter 210hp to be closer to other car witch is 245hp so 35hp different for weight differences
I have a 2017 Sonata Sport 2.0T and I walked a 2018. The 8 speed is better for fuel economy but not great for racing lol.
Passat st way better it has turbo
Y parents just got a 14,395 turbo kit gold 2015 passat
Who is the winner ? 😁😀😁
A weight difference in drivers, LMAO.
A race nobody cared about.FWD vs FWD.
