I am a native Spanish speaker and I must say that personally for me the Thai language is easy to learn, maybe it is because some sounds are similar to my language.
The most simplified way to introduce/practice vowels and work on class/tone at the same time. You took very complicated and intimidating aspects of Thai Language and actually made it enjoyable! This should be the standard for all Thai Language courses for English speakers! You did a tremendous amount of work in one hour. Thank you very much!
you have the best videos for introducing the consonants and vowels! Its to the point, comprehensible and focus on writing and clear pronunciation! Thank you for posting such a great resource :)
Omg thank you so much, when I study with other videos it got me so confuse but this video really a helps me a lot and whenever I try to quests the vowel with the consonant IT WORKS! I was so proud of myself😭 thank you so much for your teaching!!
Thank god you're making these Thai videos. There is a channel similar to yours, but only in Korean and she teaches the same way you do. So easy to understand, everything is explained clearly, you can change the subject clearly and there is no hassle. This is just great from 'students' point of view when learning a new language. Thank you for making these videos.
The thai vowels will take a long time to learn and pronounce. I would recommend a video by Stu Jay Raj Thai vowels. He explain them in a very easy way and easy to remember. He explains it in a very simple way based on the position where the sound comes from in the mouth and how the vowels connect:)
Wow! Honestly the vowels are the hardest part for me and after watching your video I think I am getting the hang of the sounds. Tones are my absolute weakest point, so I really like how you broke it down without making it too complicated!
I started learning thai not long ago and the vowels are pretty much the hardest part! But thank you so much for this video! It might be little confusing but it helped me a lot!
You’re so a good teacher! After this video I really started to understand the system of Thai language. And you’re so funny in a way 😊. Soon I will sign in to your online course. Then I will be able to talk a bit Thai with my friends in Chiang Mai in Loi krathong 2024.
Sa-wadii krub! I am interested in learning Thai language and your lessons are the best! I am highly appreciate your impact for everyone who find your lessons!
Hi Jack, do you have a chart of these vowels along with its pronunciation and writing that we can download for easy learning and reference? Thanks so much!
This instruction was top notch. So clear. Perfect pace. Perfect amount of repetition. I literally just started studying Thai on my own after a visit there. I agree with this commenter though about the up, flat, and down with other constants besides the 3 covered. But I’m sure I’ll find that.
Let me answer your question. I'm Thai and hope that my comment will help you to understand more Thai language. Actually, you can combine each Thai consonant with all vowels. However, not all consonant vowel combinations will have the meaning. Thai consonants are divided into 3 groups which are up, flat, and down. The main purpose is not to put tone marks into wrong group. Tone marks make different intonations in wording. However, without tone marks, each consonant also has their own tone. When combining with vowels, the sound of word mainly comes from the sound of each vowel, but the tone might be different between each word even using the same vowel because of the different in tone of the consonant itself. Hope that these explanations can help or may be more confusing Ha Ha Ha.
Thanks Jack. I have watched this twice so far and expect to watch it more times until I get it all. I made a set of flashcards based on this video and am in the process of memorizing them. I have a question about this word ฟิสิกส์. It's pronounced fisiks and means physics in English. What is the symbol above the ส at the end? I'm sorry it's so small. It looks like the number 6, tilted 45 degrees clockwise. Also, what is the symbol above the kor kai in the word เก็บ?
hi thanks for thelesson it is really comprehensive and easy to understand. However, i'd like to know how you decide the tone to go up, down, or flat based on the pairing of the vowels and the consonants? Is there a pattern/system that we can follow? Thanks so much.
You can check out the tone table that I made, you will see the tone rules explaining why the tone goes up and down. : drive.google.com/file/d/1ZSA6bZIfxaaRKPeS2hW44W2nMU7QvAY-/view?usp=sharing
To make a falling tone, you can think about throwing a rock. Start from your normal speaking pitch, then raise it slightly before letting it fall, similar to throwing a rock upward and watching it come back down. Another analogy is going up a hill and then coming down. Begin slightly higher than your normal speaking pitch and then let it dip down at the end of the syllable. Here's the link about Thai Tones - Train your ear to recognize Thai tones: ua-cam.com/video/PNhjPTkBeKw/v-deo.html
Different things factor in: consonant class, type of syllable (live or dead ending) length of vowel, tone markers - not all of these will apply to every situation but there’s basically a set of rules that you have to memorise. For example: middle class consonant + long vowel + dead ending = mid tone. Thai natives don’t have to think about the rules as they just know from having heard all the words pronounced by other Thais their whole lives.
loved the writing exercise with the lesson the pace was fast to initially write and listen but once i got my notes down listening to the lesson again was better it is hard to discriminate the tone difference he makes it is like I hear him say low tone but his sounds to me don't vary enough and are similar I wish I can hear someone else teach tones and compare the two to better distinguish tones.
Because there are low, middle and high class consonants and a list of tone rules (the type of ending also factors in). You have to learn which class each consonant is, there’s no way to just ‘know’ (at least not for us foreigners who are learning and haven’t grown up hearing it all day and night and know it intuitively!)
Actually, it's a flat tone. Sorry, my fault. I copied it from the word 'kăo,' but I forgot to delete the diacritic on the 'a,' so เคา = kao. Thank you for pointing out the mistake. I'll pin this to let people know about it.
Where can i learn online and how much it can cost. I want to learn thai to read and write because i can speak thai. language and you can teach me in thai so you don't need to speak in English
The word “sara” meaning vowel: which vowel is “sa” in “sara”? You show the word sara written in Thai but I don’t see any of the 28 vowels used in the sound “sa”? Is “sa” in sara a consonant???
In Thai, there are both visible and invisible "sara ะ" in words. Let's take the word สระ (sa-ra) as an example. It consists of two syllables. The second syllable, "ระ" (ra), contains a visible sara ะ, which is seen and pronounced as "ra" with the full sound. However, the first syllable is where the invisible sara ะ. Even though it's not visibly present, it combines with the vowel "ะ" and is pronounced as "sa," producing a half sound. As a result, the word สระ (sa-ra) has two syllables: the first syllable with the invisible sara ะ, pronounced as "sa" with a half sound, and the second syllable "ra," pronounced with the full sound. This occurs because the word is borrowed from the Pali language.
Mistake: 59:37 typo, change "kăo" to "kao."
How do we get the falling tones.
If a native still has trouble with it…..

How do we get the falling tones, you haven’t mentioned those.

You could do a video comparing similar vowels. Sorry but: _ึ and เ_อะ ( _ื, เ_อ ) are the same to me,

may I ask what is the สระเปลี่ยนรูป (inherent vowel) for this short monophthong vowel "เออะ"??
the inherent vowel of "เ-อ" is เ-ิ
เกิน read as ก + เออ + น > gaern
but there is not the inherent vowel for "เออะ"
"เออะ" has no final consonant.
