  • The Wars of the Roses brought great turbulence to England with the dynastic civil war between the House of York and the House of Lancaster causing chaos with the monarchy. The crown passed between the two houses a number of times, but following the Battle of Bosworth field, Henry Tudor's forces defeated Richard III. After Richard's bloody death, Henry was crowned King Henry VII by rights of conquest, and he married Elizabeth of York to unite the nation and to begin the Tudor dynasty. He needed to quickly restore order and stability especially with the monarchy, and he did this in a number of ways. Through taxes also, he managed to make the crown very wealthy, however this did make him at times unpopular with the people of England.
Henry VII would go on to have a very famous son who became England's most infamous and notorious King. His younger son became King Henry VIII who is most famous for having 6 wives and executing many high profile individuals including 2 of his own wives Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. However Henry VII's eldest son Prince Arthur died, and the heir apparent's death caused great upset with the King. Following this, Elizabeth of York died shortly after and Henry VII was distraught. He went downhill quickly and later became morbidly ill with consumption, which today would be described as tuberculosis. His final moments were known to have been very religious and pious, with the King in a great degree of pain.

Always felt it was such a shame that we got two warrior kings from the house of York in Edward IV and Richard III, strong men who would stand and fight their own battles. Then to be followed by the Tudors who only saw battle whilst standing far behind the lines and sending men to fight and die for them instead of leading them their selves. Henry VII was a tight fisted guy, so much so that he made his son marry his dead brothers widow to keep Catherine of Aragon’s dowry and then Henry VIII who turned into a tyrant and again fought no battles but killed plenty. For all that is made of the Tudors they were lesser kings than their predecessors

@Spencer York agreed in turn, if it wasn’t for the decades of war and the subsequent weariness of it I doubt Henry VII would have kept his throne, Henry VIII would have slight more chance mainly thanks to his mother but neither were battle kings who would have roused men to fight for them and until Henry VII married Lizzy of York the Tudor claim was so weak it’s almost laughable

Henry VIII was not raised to be king and took part in activities such as jousting. Henry VIII would suffer a severely head injury whilst jousting, possibly giving him sustained head trauma. Arthur was raised to be a good king and most likely instilled with kingly values.

    • @carly0406

@@ludicrous5765 I agree with you in full. Henry was the "spare" and raised as one...he was catapulted into his reign with very little knowledge and guidance and I ultimately I believe a part of the reason why Henry VIII kept up his "boyish ways" was that he never properly grieved or was able to fully process the unimaginable events that quickly led him to the throne that he was clearly unprepared for.

There was such a great love, it seemed, between Henry VII and his wife, Elizabeth of York. For a match that was made so long ago, it's clear that there was a lot of devotion and tenderness between them. It would be so nice to see more adaptations of Henry VII. I would definitely recommend the Shadow of the Tower, but- not you, Phillipa Gregory. Go away. *shoo's an imaginary Phillipa Gregory out of sight*.

@@susanmccormick6022 To this day, it's still not clear. Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck were, without a doubt, imposters, but as to the fates of the princes, it was always assumed that King Richard had them murdered. After all, with the two, young heirs out of the way, he was able to take the throne. Even if they were declared bastards, they still had a stronger claim than he did. Don't get me wrong, I still hope to learn, once and for all, what happened but it still is one of the biggest mysteries out there.

    • @Kaylee-Renee

They didn't understand how a babies sex was determined back then.
They thought god would grant sons if they prayed and god favored them. Stillborn children then must be a punishment from god or blamed on the woman for doing something wrong.
Catherine had a son who lived around 55 days then a son who died shortly after birth and a stillborn son plus 2 stillborn daughters.
She tended to go into labor early around 8 months and with no real medical care and her determined to fast even while pregnant its hard to know if she had a medical issue or was causing it through starvation.
Anne had at least one miscarriage that was a son and before that many reports at the time talk of her being quite far along in a pregnancy after Elizabeth's birth but nothing stating what happened or what the baby was.
There may have been 3 but so much stuff about her was gotten rid of on Henry's orders.
He never fathered anymore children after Edward and out of all his affairs he only fathered one son. I think he would of clamed any children just to show people its not his fault so the fact he only clamed one makes me think he only had one.
Also in a time when basic medicine and health care didn't really exist its not surprising so many babies died before or not long after birth.
