I grew up watching Mauer, Kubel, Cuddyer and Morneau; they were my favorite Twins players to watch and I'm sad to see the last of four retire from baseball...
I know Joe doesnt have the counting stats to be a HOFer, but he has the accolades. - #1 Overall Pick - 6 time All Star - MVP - 3 batting titles (Most ever by a catcher & only AL catcher ever to do so.) - 3 time GG winner - 5 Time Silver Slugger - Highest batting average by a Catcher in MLB history. - Second most hits in Twins history - 9th All time in WAR by catcher. Everyone in front of him is A HOFer. - 2nd Highest OBP ever by a catcher - 5th highest slugging % ever for a catcher. - 2nd Highest OBP Ever by a catcher. - Longest On Base streak ever by a Twin. This sounds like a HOFer in my book.
Those r hall of fame stats and accolades. Especially considering he retired at like 35 and could still be playing to this day probably getting at least 120 hits a season still
Mauer and Ichiro. They don’t blow you away with their strength, but they made the game beautiful with their singles. Joe Mauer single up the middle is classic. Happy to see that Jorge Polanco is lookin Like the next one
SeoulGeneration yeah because not everything has to be a homerun you dunce, these guys specialised in getting the hit rather than making it a long ball.
Joe Mauer had one of the best batting eyes in the history of baseball. Between Joe and Rod Carew, it's hard to believe either one of them ever struck out. Thanks for the memories Joe!
Mauer has got to be my favorite baseball player of all time. I spent my entire childhood watching him play and I have tons of respect for him. Would love to meet him someday.
Grew up watching joe right here in mn and the way he was a part of the city and state was something else he was always so much more than an incredible (possible HOF) player he was a legend, loved seeing him play behind the Tv and live. Once a twin always a twin and in my opinion u are the greatest twin ever
I'm a nats fan through and through but I am absolutely a lifetime Joe Mauer fan. Just everything you would ever want out of a catcher. Disappointed he never got to the championship series
Twins fan here: 2000's twins did great building a team, winning pennants moving up! Looking good. 2010 resign "baby Jesus" to that new contract, instant last place, never back again until...after he leaves, use his $$ to make a team. Boom! 1st place again
Where has the time gone? I remember when this guy first came up, and now I flip the tv on and all of a sudden his hair is grey and his number retired. Life is short. Don't go through life wondering what if? Leave it all on the table guys. God bless.
Don't care what anyone thinks. This man is the best catcher ive seen (only 21 may be more before my time). This guy was everything to Minnesota. He was a hometown guy. I watched him, Torii and Michael. I wish these guys would have won a world series, they deserve it. If his career didn't end at catcher like he did, he would have been the best stat wise but he couldn't get there. That's why I say what I say. Enjoy Retirement Joe
And im glad they let him go out the way he did. I actually have proof on facebook (not saying I had ANYTHING to do with this just like to think i did lol) where I stated, and even tagged the twins Facebook page, I said "for his last game I want you to have him come out in his catcher gear. Literally almost shit myself when I seen this. Obviously my comment didn't get recognition for them, but I did get quite a bit of likes. Sorry Joe and Torii are my favorite players. I remember times we would go to the game and get there for batting practice and I would get some balls smacked to me from all the twins. Never did I bring a pen which is really dumb. Have like a bucket full if their practice balls lol. Never could get a homer tho.
As far as fan marketability, Joe will be entrenched as a Twins legend. He quietly did his job with zero problems in public relations. Ownership utilized this at Twinsfest by practically placing him in an ivory tower for autographs. As for as plate production, he was grossly overpaid. Batting average is the most hollow stat there is in baseball. RBI's are the meat of a hitter. Ask yourself this. What would you rather have at 1B or DH for 23 million a year? .269 / 35 / 110 Or .322 / 10 / 68 Not even close. Paying Joe that kind of money (before salaries got crazy) cost the Twins a true ace pitcher AND one, if not two, 100 RBI-a-season position players. Cuddyer could have stayed a Twin also if you paid Mauer what he was actually worth- 4 to 7 million dollar a year range instead of the insane 23 million dollar range. The fans loved Joe Mauer and it's a fans game in the end but as a player he was given a contract that made no room for a small market team to sign key players for championship runs. Twins could never sign a top ten pitcher to a long term contract in any of the years Joe was under that huge contract. I liked Joe but when you're 6'5 235 you've got to be hitting 30+ bombs every year just like you did to JUSTIFY the salary after the one season you actually did hit almost 30 bombs! That's why he was given the salary because it was assumed he was going to do that! Also, he NEVER restructured for his team to be more competitive. When he himself had to know he was overpaid, he still didn't restructure to help his own team sign and resign key players he knew the fans also loved. That is why I cringe when I think of the Joe Mauer contract. It is just painful.
Yes, batting average takes a back seat to OBP. RBI's are a team statistic, (you can't control who is or isn't on in front of you) it does not determine the value of a hitter. With that said, Im not much of a Joe fan.He definetly had a bad contract, His last 5 years were very pedestrian. He was valuable at his peak however, almost as valuable offensively as Johnny Bench Mauer .358 wOBA 122 wrc+ Bench .362 wOBA 125 wrc+ He was a very productive hitter. He had 6 seasons over a 130 wrc+(Bench had 5). 5 seasons over a 5 war(Bench had 6) Will he get into the HOF? Probably not, His peak might not be long enough to receive that honor. Although I understand the argument for him
Mauer had potential to be the greatest catcher of all time (if we look at the combination of his offense and defense). I doubt he would have been a force in the lineup like Piazza (Mauer only once hit 20+ home runs in his career and never hit 30+ in a season, and only twice had a slugging percentage of over .500 if we dont count his limited plate appearances in 2004), but Mauer always had high batting average and high OBP. But again, if we look at both how well-disciplined he was at the plate and the production he brought, and how great his defense was, Mauer should have been the greatest overall catcher in baseball history.
Catchers should have a lower standard when it comes to the Hall of fame this cat was arguably the best hitter in the game for a 3 to 5 year stretch he was that good
All those playoff highli.....oh yeah, there are none. Do yourself a favor and look up Kirby Puckett highlights instead. He helped bring 2 World Series victories to Minnesota.
Funny I missed seeing any post season or world series highlights. Oh that's right, there are none. Ironic that the Twins are good now that he is gone from the team.
He definitely was not a power hitter, he hit ALOT of singles...14 of his 15 years he never even hit 90 RBIs, only one year he hit 96...In contrast, Johnny Bench, also a catcher, had 6 100 plus RBI seasons...This next stat I think tells it all... The most hits in one season was a 197 for Mauer and 177 for Bench but Bench had OVER "50" more RBIs...With 20 less hits even!! ... Basically Joe Mauer was paid 30 million a year to hit singles, and he hit slot of them.
Hate to say it because Mauer is a great guy, but you're absolutely right. First year of being able to spread around his money and the Twins have the best record in baseball. Not a lot of great seasons when Mauer played
Uh huh, and do you think the stingy Pohlad family would have opened up their dusty wallets for other players? At least that shitty family's hand was forced, due to Joe's popularity. It's easy to play "what if".
I grew up watching Mauer, Kubel, Cuddyer and Morneau; they were my favorite Twins players to watch and I'm sad to see the last of four retire from baseball...
Cuddyer Actually Owned A Batting Title Of All Things
Morneau is great behind the mic.
Same man so many great memories.
Spencer they never anything though. They were one and done
June of 2006 is when i watched my first twins game and mauer was the first batter i watched and from.that point he was my favourite player
I know Joe doesnt have the counting stats to be a HOFer, but he has the accolades.
- #1 Overall Pick
- 6 time All Star

This sounds like a HOFer in my book.
Not to mention he was also a great guy off the field, as we know that’s one of the reasons no one got in the hall of fame this year
Maybe I'm biased but if Torii Hunter and Joe Mauer never get in the HoF I'll respect the bullshit that is their voting committee even less

Nick R Luis Arraez is looking like Joe Jr. Too!
They never hit for power unless they need to which is why Ichiro is known as the hall of famer who doesn’t prefer swinging 100%.
Polanco isn't the guy, can't stay healthy. Agree about Mauer and Ichiro though.
Joe Mauer had one of the best batting eyes in the history of baseball. Between Joe and Rod Carew, it's hard to believe either one of them ever struck out. Thanks for the memories Joe!
Thanks for always taking the first two strikes and then hitting into a 6-4-3
SeoulGeneration better to drive the pitch count up and attempt to move the runner over rather than sit back and strike out
I mean he only struck out once in high school
Joe mauer=hall of fame legend
Mauer has got to be my favorite baseball player of all time. I spent my entire childhood watching him play and I have tons of respect for him. Would love to meet him someday.
Thank you Joe for everything you've done and for being a Twin until the very end
Minnesota will always miss and remember a hometown great! #7 will always live on for all Twins fans!
My favorite player since I was 4
One of the prettiest swings in all of baseball history. Could hit it to any part of the field and with some power. Mauer is a HOFer.

With Joy that he is finally gone and Twins can sign some good players now that Mr. Selfish is home counting his millions...
Great left handed hitting catcher
Loved watching Mauer play. Got to see him several times in person when the Twins would come to Boston to play the Sox.
So sad such an amazing player wont be a player in this league anymore!
Yep, young men are dying fighting terrorism and wow, we won't get to watch the coward spend his money...
Congratulations to Joe! 2024 Hall of Fame! ⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾
He deserve to be in the hall of Fame ,,,
Well-played, Mauer.
Joe Mauer... Greek God of Sideburns
Wish there would've been more post-season moments :(
Minnesota did a bad job of building a team around Mauer and Morneau
Team game
wow, I didn't think I'd cry at the end

Thank you, Joe.
For destroying this team for 10 years....
I miss this twins team especially mauer
My dad worked for the twins organization so I love them
rather embarrassing you didn’t show the diving out he made at home plate against the Yankees
Ik but there was so much greatness so yeah, besides the angry thumb wouldve tooken away for the real deal himself
cant like this video enough

I was at the game where he PH and got that HR against BOS. and still lost at the Dome.
