I watched that Jim Edmonds play live as a teenager, that catch is the greatest catch i have ever seen. I cannot describe how hard that play is from a center fielder
@@KnockOffBeingFat You sure? if he really wanted to during the prime of his career he wouldn't have signed that lifetime deal with the Angels, the fact is that they have no pitching and are probably not going to make the playoffs anytime soon.
DeWayne Wise came in as a defensive replacement for the ChiSox, and in the 9th, saved the perfect game for Mark Buehlre. Truly an iconic play from Wise.
What I love about baseball is that if you look up reels from the 20’s-now the only thing that’s really change is the players and the color of the tv. The crowd, announcers, players, everything and everyone has the same energy they had 100 years ago, the energy hasn’t changed at all.
If you played baseball, you should know that Edmonds catch is the best ever. Catching the fly from that angle itself is the most difficult catch yet he dived on top.
Old Tiger Stadium is so damn cool, they really made a mistake by not modernizing it a little bit and keeping it around. It would be a historic baseball landmark like Fenway or Wrigley and a must-see destination for baseball fans if it were still around today.
These catches are just absolutely phenomenal it's always good to see someone play great defense sometimes they don't realize that good defense saves games
I love the coincidence between 14:50 and 15:10. In both Volquez was the pitcher and in the first Dyson robs Yelich and in the second one Yelich Robs Dyson
8:47 with the great call by the legendary Dave Niehaus; may he rest in peace! The home Detroit crowd game Jr. a standing ovation even though he robbed their guy of a 2-run homer. Wow!
I personally think that jim edmonds catch at the start of the video is one of, if not THE best catch ever. Full speed, straight away, full extension dive. He wasnt looking over his shoulder, he was looking straight up while running. These are all great, but i dont think any of them get much more difficult.
Edmonds catch was not due to athletisim, it was due to the lack of it. He was highlight thief. Wise's catch is the most spectacular in this video. The context of that catch makes it one of the most clutch catches I have ever seen.
Agreed. You expect to see all the great athletic catches of Griffey, Andruw Jones, Hunter, Lofton, etc. But I had forgotten just how far Edmonds laid out for that ball. And the fact that it was directly over his head and he heading face first into the warning track as he laid out to catch it. Remimincent of a great "Ghost to Post" catch by Dave Casper. I'm glad they started the episode with that catch or it might have gotten lost in the middle and overlooked.
The Jim Edmonds catch is the best catch I've ever seen, but Andruw Jones could have his own great catches video all by himself. Having only one catch on this one is laughable, and it wasn't even his best catch.
A big shout out to the announcers who give us the play by play with their accuracy and enthusiasm. They are the unseen guys who give the game the voice of fun and excitement for us to hear.
Edmond's was every coach's favorite example of fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. Look at the catch from the opening video. The man catches a complete over the shoulder with two hands!! Nothing else you can say about that one
Yeah I know right? Only people who aren't very smart say and think baseball is boring. Unlike the other sports it's a "thinking man's" game. Not just the play and the history but the way it has to be managed, it's the only sport that requires that type of knowledge because unlike every other sport you can't swap in and out players at whim. You can't come off the field for a breather or to checkout an injury. It takes planning and forethought. Baseball is also the only perfect game (don't get me wrong I love football) but baseball unlike all the rest doesn't rely on a clock meaning unlike most others it can't end in a tie. Each team gets an equal number of opportunities every time so you know exactly who was better at the end of the night. Not to mention hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in any sport. Pretty much all the other sports anyone can emulate and do the tasks of the other sports (not saying they can do it well but they can do the basics) not baseball you could give the average person all day to try and square up a MLB pitch and it ain't happening.
@@Jameson619B First of all "Thinking mans game" sounds more like football to me knowing schemes match ups and tactics. Also I'm not saying baseball is boring to play necessarily, I like playing it it but it doesn't have the constant action of soccer, basketball, lacrosse, etc. Also pacing yourself is certainly not unique to baseball and, except for the pitcher, not really that big of a thing in baseball compared to other more active sports. No you don't know "exactly who was better" every time, there is luck in baseball like all sports. Also in most sports, besides obviously soccer, a tie game is not all that common. Having hitting be hard doesn't automatically make it better, I don't follow your point. Take your average person and put them in an NFL game as a wide receiver and they aren't catching a football while covered by the corner, that doesn't mean that football is perfect. Overall I like baseball but most of the time watching it is relatively boring compared to other sports. Also fuck off with calling me stupid you pretentious asshole. (Side note are you James' son or Richard's? Maybe you should clarify with your parents on that one)
Putting the two video plays of SR and JR Griffeys next to each other both outfield catches is sweet video editing sir, job well done. First showing JR and then following up with his dad doing a spectacular play just shows you that pedigree is hard to beat.
@@mrmc9278 I agree. I'd put his game ending catch in Montreal in 02 or his catch against Marlon Anderson with the bases loaded in 01 in Philly above that one
I completely agree. Also, how did they not have Ender Inciarte's walk off homer rob against the Mets on here??? I feel like the editor of this video has more of a heart towards classic baseball, lol.
It would be nice to see all such defensive plays that kept a no hitter or perfect game in tact. It always seems like something serendipitous happens on the way to the no no
Some truly spectacular catches in this clip. I have been watching base ball since the 60's. The 5 best defensive out fielders I ever saw were Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Garry Maddox, Paul Blair and Ichiro.
Gary Matthews Jr. is my favorite catch of all time. Full extension up and over the center field fence. No. 2 certainly is the portfolio of Jim Edmonds gems!
Outstanding highlight clip! Packed with so many great catches into the time frame it was. Nice touch having the Willie Mays catch off of Vic Wertz in the 1951 World Series and then ending it with the catch that gave Jordan Zimmerman his no-hitter. As a HUGE Boston Red Sox fan, it was great to see one by Mookie Betts, who as the great fielder that he is, has had a few, now, in his career. This Red Sox fan would've loved to see Dwight Evans' catch off of Joe Morgan in the '75 World Series, too. Hopefully next time.

That catch by Wise under the circumstances was amazing... Robbing a home run is already a great play but to do it in the 9th inning to save a perfect game was epic...
Since I'm an Indians fan and I have to sing his praises where ever I go. Kenny Lofton should be in the Hall of Fame. There is no argument you can make to make me change my mind. He was that good.
The Chris Taylor catch at 20:06 really stings as a Brewers fan. The game (and catch) that ended the chase to the World Series. Hopefully this year is the year.
That Gary Matthews Jr catch is by far my favorite, although as a Mets fan, after that Endy Chavez grab in Game 7 of the NLCS, I thought we were bound for the Series.
I just don't understand why Aaron Rowand's catch as a Phillie when he broke his nose running into the center field wall is never in this kind of highlight compilation. It was an amazing catch in its own right and then you add that there was bases loaded and two outs when he caught it, in a game that the Phillies narrowly won. Probably my favorite regular season play ever.
Andruw Jones doesn't get enough respect for his defense, and he gets a ton of respect for it lol. (That's just how good he was). He is the greatest defensive outfielder of all-time. Yes guys like Griffey and Edmonds were great but to me even they don't come close. What I think hurts him when people debate and rank the best ever is his unbelievable ability to make the tough catches look easy and make the impossible catches look almost routine. So people may not get a full grasp of just how damn good he was out there.
