When I run into two lines , i center it . Best to just double check measurements with the blueprint !!!!! Saved me a couple of times. Awesome job too all of the helping hands also!!!!!

Hi, nice job and one thing I would suggest is that you put a heavy plastic on the ground under the floor so that could be used as storage (if needed later) and or just to keep grass or weeds from growing. There are other reasons but the 2 I listed are the ones I could think of right off the bat. Like I said just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!!
What appealed to my OCD was you using the square to ensure that the joists were plumb and the way you went about making the 20' width correct.
You and me both! :) I try to do things correct so long as I am not in a rush or time crunch. I'm trying to take my time and really do this build right.
I'm happy you have that app. I'm a bit more of a simple guy, I like the 3-4-5 system from school.

Are you planning to close off the underside with something? Any insulation in the floor? I’m in MN so I would but it probably isn’t totally needed there. Nice work on the foundation and floor joists. Squared up and running. Great start
Yes, but that will be after the building is weathered in above it. I've seen others insulate the floor as they build, but the inevitable rain always happens which means the floor insulation is now wet, probably moldy, and not of any use unless a closed cell foam was used. I prefer to know my insulation is dry and doing its job. :) It sure is expensive enough! It makes for a more difficult insulation job after the fact, but it's worth it to me. :)

12:00 I have never regretted "over-building" anything. However, I have had many "I wish I would have..." moments.
Looking really good. I'm sure you are getting anxious to get it done. My recommendation is to overdue everything; lighting, outlets ventilation, etc.. More than you think you will ever need. I had to get an electrician in this week to add several 220's and a box for my forthcoming MiniSplit. Look at the Pioneer Mini Splits when the time comes.
Yes, I just watched another channel that got pioneer mini splits. I guess they're the best.
I am trying my best to learn from all my other projects on this one. :) I have planned for outlets every 4 feet around the perimeter of the workshop and a few in the ceiling and floor. For lighting, I'm planning on LED recessed lighting and at least 40 lights in the space across four lighting circuits. I'll run at least one 240v outlet for an electric heater unless I can afford a mini split, but that is not looking very likely right now. Heat to get through Winter is the requirement right now, and I can plan to add in the mini split around early Summer after saving the money for one maybe. :) Thanks!
couple of comments: 1) that looks absolutely beautiful. I would have done (and have done) some things differently, but your build is strong, well laid out, square, plumb, level, etc., and you have nothing to apologize for. 2) (try to keep this short). Wife opened an online bookstore in 2003. She quickly grew her inventory to several thousand books. Since she was working from home, that meant, I was constantly trying to find new places to store her ever-increasing inventory. I eventually built a two story, 24x24 building in our back yard - cement posts, 2x8, 3-layer, 24' beams - one every four feet. This build took place just as the housing market collapsed in 2008 and I got a tremendous deal on a full pallet of treated 2x4 - 8' studs. SO, the joists for the first floor were 16" on center 2x4's. added insulation, put 3/4" tongue and groove plywood and it held just fine until we sold the place. Second floor was 12' - 2x10's, 16" o.c. with a stringer at the outside edge and at the center. the upstairs was rock solid, but no overlapping joists.

Great job, are you going to insulate between the floor joists before you lay down the decking? If so I suggest you install chicken wire on under side of floor joists and just drop in your blanket insulation. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge you gain from your projects. Love your channel!
You don't want to insulate until the building is weather tight. Otherwise rain will seep into the areas and create mold/mildew.
I'm about to build a 32x32 cabin the same way your built your shop. Your videos are extremely helpful.

That's the plan! :) Also why I was so picky on the foundation and framing sizes so that the finished floor heights match. I will connect them with a "tunnel" to make the two spaces more like one.
The framing at first looks like overkill, BUT, knowing that this is a workshop and you have heavy tools/machinery, it looks perfect for flooring support
This is the style framing that is used around me.
Don't forget to roll on your bubble wrap along the length of your floor joists. A 6° - 8° F heat savings and bug /rodent barrier, plus moisture barrier is worth the $100 bucks for your building.
Looking Good Sam. So how many steps are you going to have? Or are you going to have a dock / ramp to make loading and un-loading easier?
There will probably be a ramp from the new workshop to the carport, but the two workshop buildings will be connected with a "tunnel / hallway" so I'll likely walk from the driveway and into the workshop(s) from that area most.
Purely TERRIFIC, Sam! I wish I could be there with you, even if only to give you a HUUUUGE pat on the back for job well done. Now, I look forward to the next installment in this series. You're brave to tackle all of this mostly alone, but I think your young helper is just plain GOLDEN! Give him an extra $20 when you dole out allowances this week. He deserves it!
I really appreciate that! He's my #1 helper for sure -- just like how I was with my dad. :) I also pay him for his work on things like this -- it's a great way to reinforce a positive work ethic I think. But I'm also repeating what my parents did with me, too. :)

SAM ....you usually always do it right. You need a 6 mil vapor barrier in the ground below the structure.
It will come along when the ground work is completed. I still have drainage tile to install and gravel to fill in.
Your building a house. Lol. Very well done Sam. It’s going to be so sturdy and strong. You will be able to upgrade any tool and not worry about is my floor going to hold it. You're just about right! It's about 300 square feet smaller than our home is.. wow! In regards to power, it will stay the same as what I have now, but I hope to upgrade my off grid system to take on much more of the power work load. The most energy hungry device in my workshop is the garage heater (7,000 watts). Otherwise the things I use are fairly lower in power demands.

With having your end joist locked in at 20 feet, you could have run a string line along the rim joist to get it straight, then nailed the joist to the outside beam, then the middle would be set, no measuring needed
Enjoying the project! Overlapping your joists does mean they will not be exactly square and you will get some 'run out' on the ends of your 8 x 4 sheets. The second row in (on each side) will be the most at risk. Hope it is okay and you dont need to add short 'sisters'.

Hi, great video. I am wondering though why you overhung you sides (rim joists) past the support beams
I like this building style as it's forgiving and keeps the foundation piers completely under the building footprint. The only other style I would prefer over this would be a traditional block foundation wall, but that would be for a home and not a workshop.
Sam not sure if your done or not but everything is looking great, fun watching you build things, question though, are you or did you use a tongue n groove plywood for the floor?
I am not done with the building yet. :) I did not use tongue and groove subfloor (hence my blocking). I've used it in the past, but am not a fan of it vs. 23/32" exterior sanded plywood.
What fasteners/mounts did you use to attach the 2x12s to the concrete? I figured Sampson 6x6s but 3 2x12s don't fill that enough.

The cost would have been much more and a good part of it be done by professionals to be correct. There is over a 24" drop in grade from end to end so a lot of engineered fill would have to be brought in and compacted to then have a slab poured on without cracking and structural issues. Even then, they would be likely. This is a building method I am able to do myself.

Question- with the overlapping of the floor joists, do you offset each half any to allow for that? Line the Northside offset 3/4” to East and south offset 3/4” to west? ( my directions are probably off to the actual layout but you get my point).

Yes.. so on the first rim joist that I nailed the joists to, they were on 16" on center spacing as measured from the end of the board. That applied for the whole side of that floor. On the other side, instead of starting at 16" center for the first joist, it was at 14-1/2" on center to account for the other joist already being at the 16" on center mark. After the first one, the rest of the joists are on 16" on center. This allowed them to line up perfectly. Hopefully this makes sense and was what you were asking. :)

Nice job,,but would you half to use pressure treated wood since it’s so high off the ground?
Great question, and take into consideration I'm not a professional. There are a few factors that lead me to using treated wood and make me highly recommend it to anyone else: 1. The floor framing is less than 18" from the ground in some areas. Some building codes require treated lumber in this case. 2. The floor framing structure is exposed to weather - there is nothing between it and the outdoors such as underpinning, skirting, or other weather barrier structures.
Is pressure treated necessary for this floor flaming? With rain water possibly bouncing up off of the ground? Thanks.

Looking back, I wish I'd left my rim joists unblocked in my detached office building. The front got shoved out a smidge and made my sheathing overlap a little wabi sabi. Did you run into any unevenness in the top of the overlapped joists? A power planer could make quick work to fix it.
Thankfully, I didn't run into any major issues with the overlapped joists! I was wondering how they would pan out.
How much overhang/cantilever did you use on the beams relative to the piers and floor joist relative to the beams? Thanks!
