YardMax 35 Ton Half Beam Log Splitter Problems

  • This seems to be an odd problem that I believe was created due to a few things. The splitter was parked on a fairly steep grade (side to side, not front to back) and we got a ton of rain over 3 days. I think that due to the splitter not being level it allowed rain to seep in through the intake.
When I tried to start it I ended up pulling water through the intake and that created a whole bunch of issues. If anyone knows more about what happened please comment, I have a lot to learn.
Now the splitter is running well and I am covering it with a tarp to avoid this problem in the future. In 120 hours I haven't had any issues with this splitter. I've had it 4 years and it has been great. Really can't be upset with Yardmax over this issue, just an odd occurrence.

All the above are good ideas, i however took the briggs off and put a predator engine on 4 years ago, 2 pulls and im running every time! Briggs and stratton is garbage now! Parts are expensive and not worth the time. Same amount of power from the predator engine and the aftermarket is flooded with replacement parts for dirt cheap.

I have the same splitter. Mine doesn't start as easy as a Honda, but it takes 2 or 3 pulls typically. My problem with this splitter is the flimsy metal on the wood dislodger and with the table brackets. I've bent both with errant pieces of wood.

I haven't had a Honda engine yet, but I've heard they are very easy to start. I haven't had the metal bend on the pieces that remove the wood stuck on the wedge, but I haven't had that happen a lot. I have noticed the side cradle pieces are getting bent. But I've had blocks of wood that needed to be lifted up with a tractor so I'm not sure that's unreasonable for my machine. 😉 Thanks for your comment!

Yup, Not odd at all. Rain water in the float bowl. Gas and water don't mix. You might consider covering it if storing it outside. Also, when done for your project, let it run until it is out of gas, then store it away. This way, the carb won't have shellac (skunky gas) in it causing issues the next time you need it. Finally,. if you do keep it stored with gas in it, add fuel stabilizer to fuel and run unit for 10 minutes to circulate stabilizer through system. Finally, make sure your return lever is open, otherwise, there is pressure in the hydraulics and it is especially hard to pull.

Thanks for the advice! I'm covering with a tarp to prevent this problem from happening again. I always use a stabilizer in the fuel, never know when it's going to sit for a while.

My advice try and find a gas station that sells ethanol free gas usually it will be a red handle 92 octane ethanol free the 10% ethanol gas is destroying small carbureted engine

Thank you, luckily the stewarts around here sells non-ethanol gas and that's all I use in all my small engines.

Have the same splitter and have always stored it inside. Your vid has helped me to know I should continue to do so. Thx

I’ve got a brand new 35ton half beam and it is the hardest damn thing to start. By the time I do get it started, I’m bout to tired to split wood. Aside from obvious reasons not to start, I’ll say this, I’ve checked and rechecked it all, consulted owners manual and it is brand new 91 octane. SMH!

That's so frustrating! I hate when things won't reliably start or start hard! Maybe you just got a bad one? Is it under warranty? This is the only problem I've had with mine. I've had 120 problem free and productive hours with it so far. And it's probably the easiest pull start engine that I deal with on a daily basis.

@@AshleysOutdoorAdventures the owners manual refers to compression build up on the recoil starter, then return it to reset and then pull hard. So to me that’s like there’s a timing sweet spot in the pull and for the life of me I’ve not found it. I’m ready to pull the cover and use a drill and socket. It’s definitely under warranty as it’s two weeks old, but I haven’t ran it til yesterday as I’ve been cutting all the logs up and now it’s time to split. Definitely frustrating and doing a return I’m kind of dreading the whole ordeal. If they would ship me an assembled one and I don’t need to disassemble this one to return, that would be ideal.

@@fivedogsranch9288 That's interesting, mine usually starts on the first pull. Usually you can feel with the cord when it kind of catches and pulls a little harder. But I wouldn't say it's any different than any other pull start engine.
It's been quite a few years since I got mine and had to put it together, I'm trying to think of any kind of packaging that might still be on it that's causing you trouble. You checked the spark plug? I've had to replace a new spark plug before. It won't even fire? Is the fuel on?
I totally understand the hassle of trying to deal with a return and get a new one. It's frustrating when there's work to be done and you have to mess with stuff like this.

@@AshleysOutdoorAdventures I’ve now pulled the spark plug. Looks nice and clean, checked gap and replaced it. I’m even now using a dewalt cordless drill to turn it over. Nope. So I’m going to go buy a couple new plugs in case this one is just a bad plug. It was hard to start from the very get go. But yesterday after 30 mins of constant pulling to finally start it; I got the cord done and ran out of gas. I dunno what if anything that would do, it should do anything theoretically. Thanks for replies.

@@fivedogsranch9288 hopefully you can figure out what's wrong with it. It sounds very interesting. And definitely frustrating! I'd love to hear an update on what ends up happening with it. Sorry I don't have any other ideas. It sounds like you tried anything I would have thought of and more. I certainly wish you luck! I think if you can get this issue sorted out you will love your machine. I've split a lot of firewood with mine and it's never let me down. I really couldn't blame this issue on my machine.
