Saw CH on that tour in San Luis Obispo, CA with Eddie on keyboards and it was wonderful! They played all of the 1st CH album, along with several Enz tunes, including "One Step Ahead" and "Shark Attack." A major highlight was Neil improvising a song about one of their roadies who was a vegetarian and was a bit "gassy" on the tour bus. They hung out afterwards and were really nice to everyone, my girlfriend and I got a great bunch of info about Nick designing the outfits they wore on that cover (and tour) and I think I still have one of Paul's drumsticks in storage somewhere...
Thanks for sharing this Great Post ! I'm 60 yrs old & normally place Beatles songs in their own class, but "Don't Dream It's Over" is one song that stands alongside Lennon-McCartney.
Good news! Crowded House has reformed and would have had an album out by now if not for the corona virus pandemic. Neil and Nick, plus the producer of the first 3 albums, Mitchell Froom, is actually in the band on keyboards. Drums are handled by Neil's youngest son, Elroy and lead guitar handled by oldest son, Liam.
Great song!.and it's always a true sign of classy song that even if u haven't heard it in ages it still sounds fresh!..And one tremendous Band that probably don't get their just desserts were 'The Little River Band'( who were fantastic!) so crowded house followed in that tradition!
Yes, he does. And those who don't know the song would never catch it. The play right on as if nothing went wrong. Great song no matter how they sing. Great observation, and still a fantastic performance.
I thought he cut the song short but he skipped a verse and then went back to final verse again. at that point the other band members begin smiling realizing the improv. great voice this guy has.
Ben Orr (RIP) of The Cars often did this....check out Drive from LiveAid...he mixes a verse, camera pans crowd, then back to him you see him smiling , waving off someone behind him
Saw them as they opened for Bruce Hornseby and the Range. Great concert...both of them had just emerged on the scene. Paul Hedter was great playing on a small two drum snare set for the whole concert.
i know the song, backwards and forwards, but it doesn't really matter to me that he effed up the lyrics! LOL every musician i've ever known has done that once in a while, and Neil is human (even though a genius songwriter). i actually love this version, with the smirks and smiles between them better than i do the "perfect" versions! and wow, Neil's hair... i'm still trying to recreate it for myself! :-)
I'm with you. I'm a huge Crowded House fan and also love the songs Neil was writing with Split Enz like "Message to My Girl" and "I Got You". But "Don't Dream Its Over" is definitely the song that first put CH on the map. Neil did get the lyrics right. He just got the order of the verses wrong. No matter how you cut it, great performance. I never cared for the studio version of "Something So Strong". Every live version sounds much better. This one is perfect.
Yes...on the 2nd verse he went to the final verse and on the final verse he started out as the final verse but then finished with the 2nd verse...got that...haha. Btw, I did "Don't Dream" earlier this year.. search "Don't Dream Van" ...if you get a chance. Good point on the lyrics. --Van
I know! he sang the 3rd verse during the 2nd, so I think Neil was like "I'm gonna sing the 2nd verse now" but not until after catching himself repeating the 3rd verse again lol.
@ nickdryad - I think it's Eddie Rayner on the keys... The black acoustic appears to be a *KRAMER FERRINGTON KFS.* If in doubt, ask a guitar-spotter...
Used to amuse me when Nick or Paul would sing an off note (usually when trying to close 'Something So Strong' and Neil would wince. I don't think Neil has sung a bum note ever, in his life.
Actually both, from Google: Crowded House is a rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985. The founding members were New Zealander Neil Finn (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter), and Australians Paul Hester (drums) and Nick Seymour (bass). Later band members included Neil's brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod.
One of the very best songs ever written.
Well said, thank you!
To true
Without a doubt.
The frightening thing is Neil Finn has written 20-30 other songs at this level.
I can listen to this song every day for 40 years and never tire of it - it is such a beautiful moving song :)
Not autotune here folks. Just pure talent. ❤
I love that Neil acknowledged the fuck up with a big smile.
rest in peace paul 1959-2005
And he "improvises" verses again at 2:46 - 2:57.
Exceptional song; fantastic band; and one of the best songwriters in the history of rock and roll.
Love Crowded House...RIP. ..Paul Hester.
This still makes me cry all these years later ... remembering Paul's tears during its performance at the farewell concert...
Yes, I heard it, changed 2 -3 verses. Too funny indeed! One of the greatest songs ever!
I love the eye roll by Neil when he realizes he's skipped a verse. Good stuff.
Jeff "Smoke" Adams. Yeah man. They are the best lines in the song too. Counting the steps to the door of your heart

Sad that Paul Hester and Joan Rivers are both gone. The world needs another "Crowded House" song though! Come on now Neil!
Bob Dreamzzz God Paul was good

Love Eddie Rayner's keyboard playing...with Split Enz. It doesn't work as well in the context of Crowded House.

So true. Two of the best songs from the entire '80s decade.
I watched that show....they won me over

@@instuller I also watched that but I think it was a mistake
Extreme talent!! ❤

He was so gorgeous
Beautiful performances, thank you for posting.
Love these 2 songs😊
Never saw this Joan a Rivers, thanks for posting. Colossal song.
I will miss Joan.... she was funny on & off stage. The Joan Knows Best show w Melissa Rivers was hilarious. will be watching again...

Love this song its hitting me tomight, all these years later ❤
I love this guys. From Brazil
Sooooo young, what a great band they were/are. Great music. Class !!!
Awww... I remember watching this when it originally aired. Goodbye sweet Joan.
Great job on a big, American TV show. Sounded great and there was no such thing as "autotune" (and no ear monitors!!)....
Thank you so much for sharing this. So amazing.
Something So Strong sounds so much better than the recorded version, the drumming in particular sounds really lively!
a handsome chap fucking great song, long may u live guys.
Even in 2024, that hairstyle is sweet as!
Respect lads . RIP HESTER ❤️🙏🇦🇺
Good one Neil finn rock on new Zealand

great video, thank you for uploading this
💯
CH = the real deal. The full package.
Love love love love
Good to see Eddie Rayner helping out on the keyboards :)
Wow, Joan Rivers & Crowded House were so young.
Awww..... Memories. Love that band.
I had the biggest crush on Neil that summer as he looked so much like a boy I had a crush on in school. 😆
Much more relaxed for the second song, great stuff
Love this!
Love how Neil got the words wrong and tried hide it. RIP Paul Hester
Yes...on the 2nd verse he went to the final verse and on the final verse he started out as the final verse but then finished with the 2nd verse...got that...haha.

And the frosted tips lol brilliant.
RIP Chef Paul too
Ovo je HIMNA ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So great
Wonderful
wow that is beyond good
Wherever ya'll are at, I hope you're enjoying yourselves. If there is nothing whatsoever, then RIP Joan and Paul Hester.
Uno de las 10 mejores baladas de la historia de la música.
Brilliant 😂❤❤
Something so strong will be replayed on rage this Saturday night
Such a great and funny guy Paul Hester RIP
a fantastic video
Eddie Rayner on keys too!! #kiwirepresent
What happened over the world that we loose this songs...
these guy were tremendous classy don't see that much anymore.
great to see the little smiles of recognition from the others when Neil messes up
I know! he sang the 3rd verse during the 2nd, so I think Neil was like "I'm gonna sing the 2nd verse now" but not until after catching himself repeating the 3rd verse again lol.
Miss ya Joan... Gone too soon. You weren't ready. I don't feel it.
Can we talk?
Best band ever. Better than the Beatles given the chance. Rip Paul.
RIP Joan..miss ya
If Crowded House had formed 25 years earlier they would have been bigger than the Beatles.
Be quiet Paul McCartney
I agree..and I'm a Brit!!
Er... No.
Aaaahaha. You're funny.
20 #1 songs and piles and piles of songs more. Live show hysteria, mania. I don't agree.
2025 they amazing
I wonder if this being the first appearance here had anything to do with him forgetting the words...are still sounds great
Cheers
Neil effed up the lyrics that night. See the look on the faces of Paul (R.I.P.) and Nick.
Nice lyric reverse, actually!
Eddie Rayner on keyboard!! 🎉
should have been the biggest band ever...
Agreed.
Those acoustics are so '80's.
it might be the haircut ... it might be the angle they shot him from ... but Neil looks more like Tim in this clip than I've ever noticed before.
He's been rocking a more unruly version of that haircut - let's call it the 'cockatoo' - in lockdown 33 years later!
Se equivocó varias veces el vocalista en Don’t Dream it’s Over, sin embargo, no le quita para nada la belleza a la canción 👏🏼 👏🏼
*_DON'T EVER LET THEM WIN..._*
Neil Finn so goddamn handsome!!!!
ffs,,, 198fukn 7,,,, where did all those years go,,,,, love the lads now as then,,,,, swoon
One of the Best New Zealand bands EVER,.
Frig l hate it when Yanks call us Aussies.
Thats like calling a Canadian a Yank. Teeth clenching.
O bless him lol
their smiles when Neil sang the wrong verse
At least it showed that they were playing LIVE 🙂🙂🙂
Neil was touring with Fleetwood Mac before covid.
Was that Eddie Rayner or Mitchell Froom on keyboards? Does anyone know what acoustic guitar Neil is playing?
@ nickdryad - I think it's Eddie Rayner on the keys...
The black acoustic appears to be a *KRAMER FERRINGTON KFS.*
If in doubt, ask a guitar-spotter...
Thanks
It's Tony Rayner!!!!
All good looking. Can sing and play a bit.
Why didn't the keyboard player get to go over and sit on the sofa for the chat with Joan?
"out of Australia"??
Used to amuse me when Nick or Paul would sing an off note (usually when trying to close 'Something So Strong' and Neil would wince. I don't think Neil has sung a bum note ever, in his life.
I think Neil left one verse out...intentional of course🤭🤫. I guess he forgot how poor he was😂😂
he kinda looks like morrisey in this.
I always thought they were from England for some reason
Chris Mann mate, give yourself an uppercut.
Australia? NEW ZEALAND JOAN. Hahahaha!
Actually both, from Google:

Pfft. Thats all I have to say.
Australia/Enzed - what's a jot of Cretaceous period continental break-off amongst Pacific co-chums, 'ey?
RadioSnivins Ahahahaha!
Jesse Sorensen 2/3 Australians
Neil struggling a bit vocally
This is on par with the beatles...
The Beatles...
ENZ! >>>>> 🇳🇿
Two people have no taste.
💯
Aussies have a hard time being in America. makes him very nervous.
If you are talking about Neil Finn, he's a Kiwi ...
timelessssssss! Well the song is...not the fashion.
