“Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House was a very popular song that I got to play the second guitar part on...
Here’s a breakdown of the rhythm parts and also a spontaneous solo!
Speaking of rhythm, we just added a 36 video, basic rhythm guitar course to the Masterclass!
Spread over two episodes, this course is perfect if you’re beginning to learn your rock rhythm skills, Or if you’re trying to go back and brush up on the basics.
Neil Finn is one of the most talented songwriter, musician and singer of all time.
what a legend.
I’ve been jamming to that song, so cool to find out Tim played on it!!!
You're not half bad yourself, Mateus ;)
Good ol days when we used cassettes lol
Hey asato, your good, but these session beasts are stupid sick
Man your cover is a classic
Don't Dream it's Over was one of the best songs of the 80's. It's a musical gem.
My brother, daughter and I jam this song every weekend.
It's one of the best songs ever. Well until it got jammed over here.
and they're Aussie. Fuck yeah
Amen.
Except the dude who wrote the song and sung it... A kiwi@@jessejessejesse825
This song and Something So Strong are two of the best pop songs ever written. Simple, tasteful, sincere and melodic.
I just assume Mr. Pierce is guitarist on every song unless it’s proven otherwise
Grizelda Tezendra Ha ha.
100% true
👊🤠🍀🎶
If him and Lee Sklar ever went down in a plane, that would be the day our music died.
That would be the easiest thing to do.
It's like Hal Blaine, what didn't he play on? LOL
Can we just all agree ....Tim is the best!
Aye lad. We can most definitely agree ☺️
100%
Yup
Zero debate.
This is one of my favorite songs! OF ALL TIME!
Also, I bought your Fretboard Mobility course, and I'm really excited about it. I've only done the 1st exercise. I can kind of see where it's going with the 2 and 3 string exercises and I'm really happy that everything is just in one place and I have a someone to play along with. I feel like for the first exercise it's a really good speed if you want to keep up with you. Some other people's lessons are a little too fast sometimes, but yours is a perfect balance.
Just leaped in from Mr Beato ... MAGIC!
same...
#MeToo
MeToo HashBrown
Same here too.
Beato is actually a scumbag, don't ever meet him. Total poser and diva
Dude that solo on the intro!! BURN
Wow, can listen to that on repeat!
Yeah, it's such a beautiful tone, right? Just makes you want to smile!
Hell yes!
Right!?!? Holy hell! That is some next level wizardry!
Great. Job on that solo - ( I brought a Gold Top like that out to San Diego with me - great guitars fron mid-Seventies - I traded an ES 355 for it plus $125 -in college
Neil's vocal even the rehearsal tape is outstanding. Great singer and writer.
Agreed. Finn is a remarkable singer.
I prefer his BROTHER. ☝️
He kind of is the paul mccartney of the 1980's.Great insturmentalist singer and songwriter.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not some crazy fan of his, couldn't name another song, no denying those vocals.
Always loved the lyric "Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup". That lyric is perfectly framed by the arrangement, performance and production. Just perfect.
It always felt there was the inspiration by John Lennon song 'Across The Universe' with the line " Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup" .............. hmmmmm
I've always liked "now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof, my possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof"
@@guydouglas6094Lest not forget the Bon Scott lyric circa 1977-8 "Feelin' like a paper cup, floatin' down a storm drain!" on "Down Payment Blues"...ha!
@@L.A.W.Studios Yes indeed! This 'paper cup' business, something funny going on? LOL
Hey now....
Hi Tim, I'm from New Zealand and we are very proud of the contribution you made to this classic, thank you 👍🎸😎
RIP Paul Hester.
I met him while living in Melbourne. A covers band I was in had a remote connection and we somehow got a couple of hours in his private home studio to do some demos. He was smoking a spliff and was pretty cool and pleasant. The truth is, we weren’t really that good but he was encouraging nonetheless. Not long after he hung himself. I hope to this day that those events were unconnected.
Paul Matthews He was also a funny funny man and used to appear on an afternoon drive time radio show in Melbourne. Shortly after he left the Band. He contributions were always hilarious and would often outshine the hired comedy talent.
@Copter Cop I know, it's kind of funny to think about it now...
@@mixolydian9102 Are you talking about Martin/Molloy?
I loved that show and whenever Hessie was on I was so happy, because he was hilarious every time. I was so bummed when he died.
@@mixolydian9102 - Paul also was clowning around a lot while *in* Crowded House. Much like Robin Williams, that happy, funny facade was hiding the fact that he'd been suffering from depression. Very sad :-(
Delay “heals the spaces” yes Tim!! I’m totally going to use that phrase from now on, it’s a perfect description of a utility delay tone.
@Rhett Shull - I've just checked out your channel, after seeing you on Rick Beato's; Great stuff, especially the on-the-road diary! Thank you! :-)
@Odell Mateo Rude af, but you got a chuckle out of me
Heals the spaces! Amen!
Wow I never bothered to see who played guitar on this gorgeous song. The guitar fills have always been one of my favourite aspects of the song but because they’re so tastefully done and so well integrated with the main melody and Neil’s singing you don’t really think about them on their own they’re just part of the overall song. It’s a testament to Tim’s skill and musical interpretation. In my opinion Neil is one of the keenest and most under appreciated talents for melody both in composition and singing.
Absolutly a very, beautiful song.,so hearing it for the first time in a while makes it sound even better
This song and Tim's gorgeous riffs made countless people fall in love
This song includes the great bass work of the brilliant Nick Seymour. Genius.
You played one of my favourite guitar parts on one of my favourite songs!! That’s so wonderful Tim!!
Thanks Warren I appreciate it
Tim Pierce Guitar you’re very welcome my friend!
@@Producelikeapro Is that you Warren?
I wonder if Marc would cover this song?
Damn, I love that song! For me it's one of the best songs from the eighties...I didn't know that you played on it Tim...not surprised though, you're a legend!
Andy I don’t know if you watched the whole video but I mention you as the place to go to actually learn the song :)
Oh wow, I see that. Thanks so much for the shoutout Tim! That means a lot to me! Cheers, Andy
@@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials Hi Andy. LOVE your channel. THE best for learning. My #1.
@@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials you are my go too for learning songs correctly if I get hung up learning by ear, thanks for taking the time to teach us all.
Tim!
I was a radio DJ when “Don’t Dream It’s Over” was on the charts, and we played the hell out of it. Little did I know YOU were playing on it and I would be in your Masterclass these many years later. It’s always such a joy to see how much fun you have while playing. I have just as much fun watching you! Your joy in playing is infectious!
Being an Aussie there is a special place in the heart with this band. Goes without saying, Tim, your contributions help make these tracks the amazing musical landmarks they are. So humble mate. Cheers
Fascinating story, I love when session/touring guitarists pull the curtain back to show how the music business works.
"Here's a crappy tape of a band that sounds fantastic..." I mean, if you can't hear the talent oozing through that ad hoc taping...I was never a full-on fan of Crowded House back then but I can hear talent and that's what ti sounds like.
One of my favorite songs of all times. I have a feeling Tim is every professional guitar player's favorite guitar player.
As a big Neil Finn/Crowded House fan, I have to say this was one of the coolest episodes I've seen.
Tim, you're gonna have a shitload of New Zealanders commenting on this video for decoding our musical childhoods, thank you for making this video!
Kia ora bro!
100% true. Us kiwis are definitely lurking!
My kiwi friends how are you guys doing
I thought they were Aussie? J/k. Ironic how playing for Rick Springfield (an Aussie) led him to record for Crowded House!
Chur budda
Hard not to be a Finn Fann, I even got giddy seeing Tim Finn play with the Wiggles years ago, which is the real reason I took my kids to that show. Neil is something else, every time I've seen him I thought he could ditch the mic and we'd still hear him above the mix, a real gift to us all -- as are you Mr. Pierce!
2:01 that "Chris Isaacy" guitar came from the late James Wilsey.Worth a listen with his solo stuff.
That part you called your "Spanish part" has always been my favorite part of the whole song and i would always rewind it to hear that part over and over again!
Neil Finn is the master of the Maori strum. Such a criminally under-rated guitar player.
He's got one of the best right hands in the business, criminally underrated for his rhythm playing honestly
And he's not even Maori!
I saw him with Fleetwood Mac a few months ago. He was really solid in the rhythm section.
Yep. That Maori strum is fantastic.
Never heard of Maori strum before. Thanks for the wildcard for today's practice time!
A good rhythm guitar player is priceless.
Don’t forget Neil was in split enz before crowded house...another great band.
The ambient Strat fills have always been my favorite part of that song, absolutely perfect additions.
If you could see me I am bowing in reverence to you. Rick Beato should do a What Makes this Song Great...the Tim Pierce fills and 2nd guitar parts. Your parts completes the song.
Absolutely !
Yes - send the request to Rick!!!
I went to a party in West Auckland where Crowded House played to thank the locals when they recorded at Karekare. They were supposed to play in the attic above the garage if I remember correctly, then they moved onto the lawn. Mark Seymour was there too....Great night!!
As a big crowded house fan was really fascinating. Thanks.
Wow!!! I remember being in a Sydney rehearsal studio in 1984 when the pre-Crowded House band 'The Mullanes' were getting the songs together. This is when they were a four piece with a keyboard player, Craig Hooper. I knew Paul Hester well because I worked at an amusement park with him. I didn't know either Neil (though I had seen him from late period Split Enz) or Nick but they were lovely and approachable
Imagine just being able to make this video and tell this story. Thank you.
And he has 1,000 other stories like it.
They play this song live at every Fleetwood Mac show now.
A really lovely rendition at the Fleetwood Mac concert last December in San Diego.
I just watched several videos of FM playing this. Great performances but I don't see/hear Mike playing in any of them.
Neil does don't dream it's over on acoustic with Fleetwood Mac. Mike, John, Christine and Mick are off stage for this song in the set. Stevie joins Neil for the final verse
Well DUHH!
Greg Chism - They should have hired Tim to tour with them.
'Heals the spaces' - I love that.
Crowded House and Tears For Fears probably were my two favorite bands in the 80's, maybe U2 for awhile as well. Those first two Crowded Houses records i listened to a thousand times... Good times, bad times...
Keep sharing guys ! This legend deserve way more recognition than we could ever give him.
What a fantastic bit of music it was too. Crowded House is the epitome of pop music that sounds slick and easy to grasp but is actually devilishly hard to play right. Neil is a ridiculously good songwriter. Great story man!
My band played this song plus Distant Sun, Better Be Home Soon and Something So Strong. Always enjoyed playing these songs. Thanks for reminding me. We had well over a hundred songs we could put on our set list any given night, what fun. I just noticed that your guitar has no branding on the headstock. I always wanted to do that, since those companies were not sponsoring me to advertise for them. I remember obscuring the logos on my amps a few times at big gigs.
Enjoy, all your work Tim!
This song and Drive from The Cars are two of the best pop songs ever recorded. Thank you for sharing this insightful, behind the scenes look at a masterpiece.
The guitar complexity with the impeccable vocals made this song a hit. You know it when you hear it. Thanks Tim, your phrasings are so interesting.
Rick it's still a huge song in Australia. Just a classic
Great playing Tim. You live a charmed life.
There is always something in Tim's phrasing where you sit up and say "what happened there?". It's great that he explains it as well. Just these vids on their own are a great resource for development.
Couldn't agree more. I think I am going to study this one and his approach to hopefully spice up my knowledge
Tim is just so cool. This was fun to watch and have nostalgia with him.
Just amazing as always .
Priceless Tim.
Thanks Tim. Pleasantly surprised you were involved in this classic! Great guitar parts revealed - great lesson for all!
Always loved this song…partly Finn’s gliding voice and mostly the best subtle rhythm guitar backing and exquisite guitar solo
I'v learnt so much from this. thanks man
Just awesome!! 🎸
youtube, why don't you put a "wow" button? wow to meet the man behind so many songs i love.
3:00 that's an allen wrench falling from the table, right there... (Us users of Floyd Rose know that sound really well...)
You also use an allen wrench for saddle adjustment and truss rod....
Its the sound of your girl shutting the door homie
And here I was thinking someone's phone just received an alert
Tim I love this song!!!! Thx
Man, that soloing is as tasteful and awesome as it gets, Tim. Love it. Thanks for sharing this.
This song the arrangement, a subdued production, tasteful vibrato guitar flourishes, and an instrumental break that lifts the song but doesn't get in the way, it all equals, SUBLIME !!
One of my faves, Mr Pierce !! 🏆🤟
Absolutely brilliant
Love that tune
Played that album to death back in the late 80's and it's one of the best from that era. So happy to see you were involved in that amazing project. Great Sounds Tim !
Tim is an absolute mood lifter!! If you're ever having a bad day or if youre ever stuck in a guitar rut, just click on any random video from Tim's channel and youre fixed.
I came back to rewatch this because I had the itch to refresh/relearn these chord progressions. Its such a satisfying song to play.
Im pretty sure this was the first Tim Pierce video I ever watched about 3 years ago. I quickly subscribed and also watched many many more from the channel. Im a big fan. I dont recall EVER being disappointed of any TP video. He is a stinking guitar genius and a gem to the music world!
thx so much for this
Holy moley!! These videos are great!!
Tim as always you inspire, showing some sweet picking speed. Thank you.
This is so great...to know you had a part on recording one of my favorite tunes. It is the PERFECT pop song...well-written, extremely well-produced. Thanks for this video!
I'd love to have an alternate version of the song cut, using Tim's fills. Really sounded tasty. I loved that song sing it came out.
Beautiful.
I don’t know shit about guitar but find your vids fascinating; bravo 👍🏻
Tim Pierce you sir are a legend! Great tune and show of musicians place in song! cheers to ya.
Love this song.
Outstanding Lesson here!
Your playing never ceases to amaze me!😢
With the sonic pictures he paints, Tim’s like an artist with a paint brush in his hand, except it’s a guitar.
This brunch of words would make for a good foundation of song lyrics in their own right
Thank you!
I'm so happy to see this! Thanks so much for sharing
Love that riff!
I can't believe you played on one of my fav records Ive seen crowded house play this live so well so many times I would never have suspected. Amazing work
Oh wow....I love the guitar work on that song... I had no idea. Thanks Tim.
This was awesome!!! Thank you Sir!!
Always spellbinding. Thank you.
This is awesome, I never knew!
RJ, love that you are posting on Tim’s vids. LOL
Whew. Smokin' solo. That is a deliciously beautiful song, one of my favorites from that era.
Such a great tune.
You are so talented Tim
Amazing! I always loved the chordal riffs on outro solo. So memorable
Incredible... such an iconic tune. I love your room setup --- you're like some sort of cosmic guitarist in your space capsule surrounded by all that great gear :)
Masterful Tim…fully enjoyed this man..
Beautiful work.
Really important song for me. It was a huge comfort during a VERY tough time in my life. Thank you.
Dude, you’re so good. You inspire me every time I watch you.
Thanks👍
I love this stuff.
Man I love that song!!!
Wow - what insight and so humbly presented. Thanks Tim Pierce! It is so amazing to get your thoughts and riffs on a song you were involved with. Also, thanks for talking with me briefly at Sweetwater last month. I hope we get to talk again.
Love these demo and rehearsal visitations and how a great song came together.
wow, what a solo! Amazing Tim
Wow. That is some awesome guitar work.
The guitar work in this song makes it- Thanks for your contribution!
