Omaha Beach, D-Day (June 6, 1944)

- Опубліковано 19 чер 2019
- On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the biggest amphibious landing operation the world has ever seen - Operation Neptune.
In all five sectors allied troops, despite the element of surprise, sustained great casualties. However, one of them was more devastating than others.
At Omaha beach, US soldiers had the greatest difficulties in achieving their objective.
The price they paid on this beach, rightfully earned it the nickname …. ‘Bloody Omaha’.

My great grandfather fought at Omaha. He was shot when the doors dropped. He didn’t even put a single foot on the beach. R.I.P Mateo Westward 1919-1944
muhammad saleh No, it’s okay. I didn’t find out about him until the 75th Anniversary

He rests in good company. Many others had the same experience.
RIP
A true hero
Imagine going through all that training and dying before taking a single shot at your enemy
Spanish Montana I wanna say yes, but at the same time they were just common soldiers. If anything, navy seals go through some crazy training. But yes, it would suck to train for a long time and just get shot the second the door opened.
Rmando surviving was based on luck
That priest you hear about on the News I heard someone who took 3 shots from the machine gun and survived
That sucks
No soldier is common.
My grandfather served in WW2 and stormed the beaches of Omaha on D-day. If he ever told stories of the war, I would always ask what it was like on that day. And he'd always tell me he'd say when I was old enough to handle it. When I was at the age he deemed acceptable he sat me down during a visit and told me his story of Omaha.
He was 19 at the time. And was in the back of row of soldiers in front of him. He was apart of the second wave of soldiers to come in and though scared, he was fighting for his country and for my grandmother who was waiting for him back home. While approaching the beaches there were explosions in the water, as well as distant explosions inland and bullets zipped by every so often getting more frequent as they got closer. He said the sound was comparable to a mosquito flying past your ear repeatedly. When they finally got inland they were met with a barrage of bullets hitting them. He said the man in the front left of the row of soldiers was shot clean in the eye. The man in front of him was gunned down and fell back onto him causing him to slip and fall into the crowd of the fresh bodies. Only him and two others made it out of the boat. He managed to get out by waiting for the right time to move while under the bodies and the other two simply got lucky. He said the entire time they were on the beach all he could hear was carnage, constant screaming, bullets barely missing him. Brothers in arms being gunned down next to him while he moved up. He said that one of the men he had met before the morning d-day had made it up with him. And before they could even make some sort of communication he was shot in the chest multiple times before dying shortly after. A man behind him was blown in half. He said he saw a man crawling to some sort of safety after his leg was blown off only to be shot just before getting behind cover. Eventually, as the fighting went on, word got around of an opening and with due time fighting died down and by the end of the day he was in a safe position. He says that he could hear men crying, some were in the fetal position wishing they never signed up while others just stared blankly while they tried to handle what they just went through. He was relieved to be safe though he said he couldn't stop shaking until the next afternoon.
My grandfather died in 2012. He was a good man.

@Unironic Cloud Shrug
Your grandfather sounded like an amazing man, brave and strong, its terrible what happened to someone many young boys who were fighting for justice, and the end to bigotry and genocide.
I can only imagine what a terrifying experience that must have been. Those brave young men facing enormous odds. Many killed before even stepping on the beach. Brave, brave men.
I'd say the luckiest soldiers at Omaha were the ones who were either killed before they set foot on the beach and the ones who survived and got to make it home. The ones who were killed in the middle with all the bombs going off were the most unlucky IMO.

@@alastor8134 that and band of brothers (if you call it a movie series)
Saving private Ryan portrayed the d day landings well
Except it was a rainy day day in Saving Private Ryan, it was a sunny day. The only REAL rain were the bullets of the turrets shot down on the soldiers.
Apparently the scene where the soldiers are drowning in the water and are trying to get their gear off but then get shot by the MG42 bullets is inaccurate because the bullets only go a foot underwater. But yes other than that it was a very accurate scene to that of D-day
Sam the mg42 was more accurate than any American weapon germans have the best weapon throughout the war even in Vietnam they were still being used not so much by Americans but they still work well but they we're only in the start of Vietnam and middle
dragon greek
He is saying the scene is inaccurate not the gun . He's saying the seen where there are soldiers are drowning five feet underwater then machine gun bullets are ripping through it , bullets do not do this in water because of friction even at point blank above sea level with a rifle a bullet would not go through a foot or two of water with enough force to penetrate the skin . The Germans definitely had some good machine guns in ww2 , if they didn't it possibly wouldn't have been a world war all to much .
dragon greek That isn’t even accurate my mans, the US army did testing during WW2 using German and American weapons, they aren’t more accurate than American weapons, they just spit lead faster. More bullets fired /=/ more accurate
My great grandpa stormed a pillbox and survived. Lived a long life. Rip Gramps
My Dad's late cousin found himself on Omaha Beach on D-day. (We're all Canadian) He would talk quietly about it. He always reminded anyone listening, that he was frightened, but he had to carry on. He lived to his mid 90's.

I fully watched Saving Private Ryan for the first time and this is horrifying to even look back to. The people in front and middle when the doors dropped were killed instantly and thousands of shots were fired right when other soldiers reached shore! The movie was very descriptive and did a lot of effort correlating back to the D-Day invasion. If I ever celebrate Memorial Day again, I will make sure D-Day will be one of the most urgent things that I will heavily remember that got us where we are today, a better home and place.
If there's one scene from that film I always remember, it's the D-Day opening

*Yes*
Italy is a joke in ww2, so yes.
There were still Germans in Italy when Italy surrendered and switched sides, and since the Germans managed to push the Allied forces back out of Italy, D-Day was the second chance, so no, Italy has no right to say that. @PATTON I'm not American nor Indian, but from an economic perspective, India is suffering from poverty and corruption, USA has a massive economy and a qualitative army, India doesn't have the best army but it has a massive army
USA: Quality=Quantity
India: Quality
Last week we got a boat to Cherbourg. Visited utah, omaha, gold, juno, sword, pointe du hoc, and both cemeteries. You could really feel the weight on your shoulders, and sometimes even hear the gunshots. R.I.P. to all of the fallen. You will never be forgotten.
I love the shots referencing Saving Private Ryan
At Omaha beach, US soldiers had the greatest difficulties in achieving their objective.
The price they paid on this beach, rightfully earned it the nickname …. ‘Bloody Omaha’.
With the 75th D-Day Anniversary earlier this month, we wanted to make a episode on the most bloodiest beach, Omaha. What other D-Day topics do you want to see? Airborne landings, the other beaches, Norman Cota, DD tanks etc.
yes

How we took Omaha Beach even after the airbombers missed target is astonishing! To think…these were young kids. May they Rest in Peace. To the Bravest.🙏🏼
My grandfather was a Technical Sergeant in the US ARMY during WW2. I'm not sure what his orders were or where he was stationed but regardless he was a good man I was blessed to know him for the time I did. He passed away in 2000 at 84 years old. After the war he worked for Ford in Detroit for 44 years. Love you and still think about you Gramps Giovanni (John) Yaquinto.
My great grandfather was in the 1st wave fighting for Britian at Sword Beach, there were 34 of them in a landing craft and only 11 managed to get out without being shot.
He lived to 2003, my hero.
He shall not grow old

Man. I don't think I would have survived if I was there. God bless all their souls.
It's kind of random if you'd survive. That's the scariest part. No matter how prepared or good you are won't help you if a bullet randomly flies at you

I didn't know he looked so old.
As a mature young man myself born in 1998 from Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia I am extremely grateful for all the selfless men in the past who fought in every war to try to make the world a better place. I would always cherish them in my heart and never forget them. I cannot even begin to imagine the fear and the pain they have experienced absolutely depressing. That is why I will always appreciate my life because I am very lucky that I never had to experience the horrors of war. As human beings we should all follow the three principles of life compassion, empathy and love to have a more perfect union.
Great details! You even added in the British boat drivers.

Yeah, it's just a reference to Family Guy.
No disrespect intended to the men who fought on the beach.
Many Soldiers died at D Day it's not funny to make fun because they are the ones who gave us our freedom.

No one here's making fun OF the soldiers who fought.
Rather, shedding light on a grim situation through humor.
Do More battles like this, such as: Leyte Gulf, Monte cassino, El Alamein, Berlin, Kursk, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Manila.
The armchair historian did a video on Berlin, which I find quite good.

my great-grandfather was in one of those MG nests, aging 17 to that day. he said it was like a horrible nightmare seeing this wave of "ammis" mindlessly running towards them like a swarm. he felt nothing but fear, heard no sound anymore but explosions, saw nothing anymore but the blood red sea. were would the americans go otherwise swim back? as he managed to flee with 2 of his comrades it was either getting hanged as cowards by fellow german soldiers or get shot by heartless "ammis". a while after the battle they capitulated to a small 5 men group. his comrade managed to communicate, saying they were forced to fight. years later my grandpa and the american that pow'd them met once at the beach again and talked again as sort of friends. even the most horrible day cant destroy humanity. i salute to all germans who survived that terrible war. no one was asked
