    The first time I've heard about LARPing was when I watched the Darkon documentary. It reminded me of not only the games of D&D I played with my friends at lunch, when I was in High School.
    But the documentary also reminds me of the Ren Faire. Makes me wish I were able to join a LARPing circle, I would fit right in

    If you're ever in England in August, come to Renewal, you spend 4-5 days on site and you basically live there in character (and if you're camped in the in-character section you could be killed in your sleep). There are battles but mostly it's all role playing, with the odd skirmish throughout the day (and when you venture out of camp, it's not PVP but you don't want to stray too far from your faction alone).
    I was lucky enough to come from a family of role players so I've been going to events since before I can even remember and Curious Pastimes are my favourite organisers by far (though it has been slipping a bit these past few years).

    Something I find both awesome and troubling is armor on Larp. Awesome because its awesome... Troublesome because, with cushioned weapons you can't really feel the blow hitting. And when the adrenaline is pupping you can feel even less! Thus, making the point account a bit weird.

      This was just a battle game day to introduce it to the local community. This is the starting day of a branch of a much bigger LARP organisation called SwordCraft. SwordCraft has a weekly battle game of up to 500 people in 36 warbands, we run a sagas game and do two immersive six day quests each year. I think this day game was taken out of context.

    You look like you had fun which is of course the primary and most important thing, but I hope you can get a place where there is not officers and cones all over. Considered renting out a forest or joining someone who has? I mean maybe the rules are different (I'm from Denmark) but that is what we did back when I LARP'd and so the guys who kept an eye on things were also playing. Like split into squads of 5-10 maybe 15 sometimes, but generally the older just looked out for the younger and we played around in a big forest. 150 maybe 300 on a nice day :D

      This day was the first for a local branch of a much larger LARP organization. SwordCraft has battle nights every Friday in Melbourne. The larger version of the game has up to 500 people in 36 warbands sorted into two sides. We do go out into the woods twice a year with faction camp battles and sieging for up to 6 days. The burgundy and gold tabards and surcoats are from a melbourne based war band called Dragon Corp that can feild 40+ players. Hopefully the game takes off here, save me a long drive to the city quite as often as I do.

    • @six2make4
      @six2make4 8 років тому +1

      Patrick Smyth Ah okay, sounds quite fun. For a second you had me worried. While I don't LARP myself anymore, can't in this period of time, it would be a shame if you weren't able to have those big experiences for some reason or another.

    To anyone watching who ties anything with foam weapons to LARP: This is NOT LARP.
    An actual LARP would be what Shad mentioned at the end of the longer video from his first LARP experience, not what he attended.

    I'm sorry for being that guy but, what's up with LARP in AUS/England/US etc?
    Here in Sweden we do larp for several days or even a week, where we are in the woods and build up camps and fortresses etc and are in character 24/7.
    When I see clips from the US and AUS and so on of "larping" then you just stand in a modern feild and bash each other. Is that really what LARP is to you? In that case, I feel kinda bad for you guys.

    • @barghestblue731
      @barghestblue731 7 років тому +13

      Yeah well, a lot of us don't have the time or money to do what you do, given that, it's no surprise we just focus on the combat, it's easy to enjoy in a limited amount of time.

    • @jamessarvan7692
      @jamessarvan7692 7 років тому +10

      Worst answer ever. Everyone has time to spend a weekend in the woods once a year. And it doesn't cost more? Why would it? Often it costs like 40 bucks or something and then you get food and housing included. I do viking larping for example and the arrengers have actually built an entire viking village that is awesome, so for that price you can stay and sleep in a house so you can be in character 24/7, plus you get food in the tavern also in character. This larp is for 7 days but you don't have to stay that long. You can stay 1 day or whatever if you want. So your argument makes no sense.
      Combat is really the least fun part of larping.

    • @barghestblue731
      @barghestblue731 7 років тому +10

      "often it costs like 40 bucks or something" in Sweden maybe, but do you know how much it costs in say: the USA? Neither do I. But I'm guessing it's more than $40, because that would just be the cost of gas to get to the LARP event, if it was really close to where you live (in the US). And no, not everyone has time to spend the weekend in the woods, I work primarily on the weekend, and I have most, but not all, of the week off. I definitely don't get paid enough to do something like what you are describing, since I only make minimum wage, the only reason I have as much money as I do is because I basically never spend any of it, but at the same time, if I did spend my money on stuff to go LARP with, I'd probably burn through my paycheck pretty quickly. Your assumptions come from your experience, but I know people who work every day of every week, and still don't get paid enough to be able to afford taking off for a week or so like you are describing, and these people only get like 6 hours of sleep at most, between the time they get off work, to the time they have to show up to work again. Money and time are two very good reasons to not be able to do what you do, and if they did get a day off, they would probably spend it with their family, doing things the family wants to do.

    • @jamessarvan7692
      @jamessarvan7692 7 років тому +4

      I meant the actual larp costs like 40 bucks, here in Sweden yes, I'm not talking about the gas (which costs WAY more in Sweden than in the US for your information, as do most things). But the LARP itself is never expensive since the creators don't really wanna make money of it, it's just their hobby and passion pretty much.
      Sure, I understand that some people don't want to take a weekend of to do it, and that's fine. We are all different, obviously there are a lot of people like that here too. But that doesn't really explain why there aren't any such LARPS in the US, since obviously there are other people that have LOADS of time and money. So even though that might be true for some, it obviously isn't true for all.

    • @barghestblue731
      @barghestblue731 7 років тому +3

      when I said $40 was the cost of gas I meant if it was in the same town as you, but yeah I hear gas costs more in europe. As for the costs of the Larping, i meant more the costs of the stuff to go larping, not really the cost of the event itself. And most of the people who would want to do it, are the ones who don't really have the time OR money, generally the ones with money AND time aren't the ones who want to do it.

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 8 років тому +1

      Skorpxau I've got nothing against LARPs like this existing but there seems to be a gap in he market for more hardcore LARPing.
      I'd just like to see a less restrictive rules set allowing thrusts, hits to the head, kicks, grapples etc combined with the fantasy/RPG elements you get in LARP.
      If I was designing a system you'd be allowed to attack like that but you'd have more restrictions when attacking archers and mages.
      Maybe something like this exists but definitely nothing like that in my area.

    G'day,
    So, um, how is this *not* a clear case of 1) Shamelessly glorifying Violence and interpersonal use of Weaponry and 2) Socially-Acceptable Neuromuscular/Neuropsychological Practice for commiting Domestic Violence on Family & Neighbours at the next Crankypants/Temper Tantrumic Interlude...?
    Flight Simulators are good practice for Flying, Driving Simulators are good practice for Driving,
    CPR Simulators are good practice for Rescussitation..., Silhouette Target Shooting is good practice for Hunting Animals...; so it's not really credible to claim that this LARPing is anything other than practice for killing people, should the opportunity arise..., *for the fun of it, while seeking the Thrill of the Kill...*
    What do the Rosemary Battys of the World have to say about this kind of stuff, the one whose son was clubbed to death with a Criquet Bat..?
    D' ye reckon she'd see it as "good clean fun", or would she find fault with the premise that beating people to death or chopping them up is a "Skill" worth practicing ?
    Just(ifiably ?) sayin'
    ;-p
    Ciao !

      G'day,
      Thanks mate,
      It was 30 years ago that the residents on the local Alternative Lifestyle Multiple-Occupancy Community ("Hippie Commune") upgraded my nickname from "Windmill Chris" to "Chris Warblesonalot" ; and they still call me that, there, when I visit, so 5 years ago when my Dottarchild bookmarked the YT Channel onto my Phone it seemed the obvious choice for a Channel Name...
      3 years ago the son of a local Tribal Elder told my daughter that my Aboriginal Name is ".. 'Ave A Chat !" ; so I feel pretty pleased that as an old local Hermit I've been given two nicknames from two different Fringe Comminities, and both nicknames dovetail perfectly, and both indicate that I'm a harmless but competant Smartarse...
      There's a lot of people getting around who've been given far less friendly labels to wear about the place...
      Have a good one,
      ;-p
      Ciao !

      Cavouku
      G'day,
      Thanks,
      No tricks mate, it's just(ifiably ?) that I'm a Pacifist, y'see ; a General Nurse as it happens, the last Hospital-trained Graduate from Repatriation General Hospital Concord in Sydney, whereinat I nursed 2,000 Veterans of every Military Adventure Oz was into from 1914 to 1984, for an average of 10 days per Veteran...; when I began I was a true-believing Warriorist, and by the time I was Registered I'd been effectively retrained to understand that *ALL War is Always totally Wrong* (under the universal Non-Sectarian principle of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you..." Clause, which is taught by the Atheists as well as most other Theogies...).
      Being angry or frightened, having been paid for it, or being "under Orders" doesn't change any of that.
      So, as I see it, anybody who chooses to play at War and practicing Killing during Peacetime - especially if it's done in the interests of being better-able to kill for real, *anytime they deem it to be *"Neccessary",* is behaviourally choosing not to rely on any idea of a Powerful Godtheory ever being able to keep them safe, because they're busily getting themselves prepared to deal with *all* the possible imaginable Evils & Threats, which they've decided, that their idea of a Godtheory can't be exepcted to cope with...
      If I were to take my Axe from the Wood-Heap and practice Anti-Personel Manouvres with it, changing hands for an immediate Backswing, the better to chop any hypothetical Assailant's head off with it, after (deliberately) missing them on the forehand Swipe in order to "suck them in closer"...; I would expect any competant benevolent Godtheory to regard me as a blasphemous insolent spoiled-brat, and thereafter leave me to all my own devices, and settle back to observe how well or poorly I might emerge, the next time I encountered any similarly violently-doubtful Warrior-Atheist, and we chose to regard each other as being a "Potential Threat to be defended against...".
      And, to be honest, I've never before had a chance to ask a Parson who preaches in onf of the "the Churchs of *Thou Shalt Not Kill !"* whyfore they think it's acceptable to practice disembowelling Friends & Strangers for the fun of it, while role-modelling for all the little Children to imprint on how to behave like a wild roaring incoherant Killer, on the Weekends...., and Shad recently outed himself as being a Pastor of the Mormon Church...
      It's much more mystifying than the time I spotted the Feetball-Booties poking out from under the Roaming Catholic Priest's Vestments, the day Sunday Mass at Boarding-School took only 13 minutes (an hour was the normal duration) and the Homily that day consisted of "Now, go out there, *and WIN ; At ALL Costs...!" ; because the "Away Team" had arrived early, was waiting to take to the Field, and the Priest was already dressed for his intended role as "impartial Referee", under his "sacred" Raiments...(!).
      I try not to be rude, but pithy questions do sometimes need to be posed...; particularly of the Preachers...
      Such is Life,
      ;-p
      Ciao !

      Most of the people in this vid are having their first taste of any sort of sword play. But I suppose unless they were using live steel and taking it very seriously then they should not have bothered. I figure you are coming from the standpoint of someone who uses bladed weapons and armour in your everyday life, not pretending to be anything but yourself. Unless you have seen how committed some LARP folk get to what gives them joy, then maybe go cringe elsewhere.

    • @fallenstudent1103

      Patrick Smyth unless shad tells me himself to fuck off than that ain't happening. I'm here because I think his channel is really informative and enjoy it, I'm pretty sure everyone does something that would be considered cringe worthy to someone else it's not like I'm saying he sucks or that larp is lame. What makes me cringe are like people who own guns and are always talking about the what exactly there gonna do in a "gun fight" like they are Dirty Harry or Rambo things in that realm salivating in the mouth for someone to attack them that's what makes me cringe or even people who are always on about the zombie apocalypse and what they'd do to survive and collect weapons for those exact events. Don't know if this clarifies why I cringe at larp but its not like I have a distain for it so sorry if I offended those who are into this oh and to the question you had yes I do like weapons and take HEMA seriously but even that is cringe worthy in the eyes of others who aren't interested so

    As someone that does Hema and Ken jitsu sad to say I see 0 sword skill maybe us martial artist really trained to kill have way more still we don't fight with flimsy foam crap and use hard wood, polypropylene, or even metal weapons maybe in larp it's not really about sword skill it's more about just swinging at random I don't know just looks plane silly
