When I was younger, me and my friends would swordfight with sticks. The only thing that made us soften our blows is when we got older and the sticks started breaking.
When I LARPed, we were doing a sci fi, war type theme and there was this one guy who was in this full on futuristic mercenary cyborg solider suit and when it came to battle it was the coolest thing to watch that guy throw down for real.
Yes, and there are groups that use more or less real weapons and armour. The thing is, LARPers are generally more about acting and less about reproducing realistic combat. It's a fantasy where you play a character and not an attempt at actually practising combat. Also, in most countries, a waiver isn't really absolute. It's not nearly so binding, and is more to protect the company from occasional accidents than from negligence on their part to care for the safety of their customers.
Billy Maize larp weapons are always going to be to malleable to reproduce actual combat, not to mention a guy in full plate armor would have an insane amount of health against a weapon like an arming sword to replicate this well making everything unbalanced
SGT: the general's not going to like this. General : report SGT: their bailees have bailees, their towers have towers, their tower turrets have turrets, their gatehouses have gatehouses and their machicolations have machicolations! honestly Sir after seeing that half the men deserted on the spot and the other half need quality time with a therapist to get them to stop babbling and drooling
Im my LARP group there are no life points, if you are hit at an arm you can't use it, at the leg, you can't impulse yourself with it and torso or a second time somewhere you were already hit you are gone. The invalid places are the same, except for the feet that are considered part of the leg. Healing for us is kicker, but have limited uses per combat. Also most people don't have armor and it completely protect against certain weapons at the places they cover and there are kinds of magic that destroy or ignore armor.
My local larp group have a silly rule of minimum 90 degree swings, or it doesnt count. Basicly have to telegraph every strike. Also no shield hitting, groin strike, head bash, pokes or "hard swings" (meaning fast swings is almost imposible, now add the 90 degree req, and you get a system great for RP and young, but fighting is more luck, than skill)
Yeah, that would make sense if the group catered largely to kids. The issue of balancing character progression with player skill in LARPing is one that seems quite messy.
True. But you seriously cripple good fighters and anyone using a big weapon. So naturally, it was overrun with "hobbits" (read: kids under 14) with knifes and short daggers. Which hindered much of the natural flow of the RP, as all the grownups, that initiate quests and the like, was dead like 40% of the time. Everyone wants to be a thieving rogue. no matter what their char sheet said. Endured that for 3 years, then finally stopped.
Kar4ever3 Sure, but again, LARPing is a game where you role play as a character. It would grossly unbalance the game if people with combat experience could waltz in and destroy everybody. I'm not saying their solution was great, only that it's attempting to do things important for a LARP to be a good LARP. Personally, I'd approach the issue entirely differently, focusing more on an RPG progression system that remains simple, yet advantages more developed characters to even the field a bit against people who are personally experienced, without undermining the value of that personal experience.
The problem I saw, was that the people with combat experience, would gladly take a non combat role, but in doing so, also give the field to the "hobbits". There were simply too many thieves and murders, for any meaningful RP to take place. I spend 2.5 years in the City Guard to help maintain some order in the town, that should serve as quest hub and relaxing RP'ing. Yet I spend more time on mu back dead, than creating play for the kids. And I was a paying customer to the game like them. Not employed or nothing. So I might be a bit bitter, I grant that, but I also saw what it did to the RP, and drew the conclusion, that I found it silly to limit the only true skill that could swing it naturally from a play side, rather than enforce 10 new rules to combat it.
I'm off to Chaos Wars for a week in July. A little less RP, and a lot more physical, and the weapons are more towards safety than looks, but similar ideas.
Normally We use shinai in a canvas covering to spar (so we don't get pinched by the bamboo) to spar with. Hand shots didn't count,(we declare that we have gloves) but were useful tor disarming.
Latping in my day was take a stick and hit each orher until you get 3 hits only thing that was forbiden is head for protection you had jacket and working gloves and it was fun as hell nobody feard bruses or you would be mocked for a long time its seems brutal but its good thing real world is brutal and peaple that exp more things mostly have thick skin and wont fall apart mentaly or in any other way from bit of setback
I did that too back in the day! with this shit you're going to be more busy with: can I hit him there? (no most of the time) and you can't even be creative with what you can use in terms of character and weaponry because apparently it's only use swords from 1 brand that are expensive as FCK and don't allow any personality that you can get with let's say: imagination some sticks and tennisballs for magic? if larping was somewhere along the lines of what we did back in the day I would get into it the second that I'm done typing this video but NO. I'm a big nerd myself and I have to admit that I respect people that don't have the willpower to get in shape (because I was that sort of guy too for a long while) but these people are just straight out whining adults who don't want their mother to see that they have a few scratches here and there. sorry for this rant but I just had to get this of my chest,
Doelie Waaje I thought all larp were like this but I was wrong. The level of of aggressiveness and force allowed in these games vary and some are like the ones you wanted to go to. For an example if your interested ua-cam.com/video/TvIKR-gCd-s/v-deo.html
don't let them tell you feet is for safety, its because some one hit the person making the rules in the toe to much =) a ton of larps allow it and its a great hit if you can get it because its easy to smoothly go in to another hit from a shot that goes right across the toes.
Being quite a competitive person, but also loyal to rules (otherwise what's the point) ..... do you have umpires in any form .... or is it all trust based?
Is every larp fight general rules like this? Since it seems un realistic to not shield bash, take someone's weapons, javelin throw, go for the leg, or swing hard with a longsword/battle axe.. haven't larped before but wanted to, and wanted to be a berserker running, disarming, and slashing everything in site but.. this seems.. unfun.
G'day, I see... It remoindeth moi of tha last toime I wert visitin' NEMAS (New England Medieval Arts Society - they even have a pseudopod called NEMASIS , ie NEMAS In Sydney !) in their Viking Longhouse in the Pineforest just out of Armidale...; thereinat I was, a' quaffin' at the Spiced Mead, when I heard a bloke at the next table sayin'..., "Oh, I don't much like goin' inter a Foight when I've got ter use the Double-Bladed Battle-Axe.., y'see *I always die MUCH too easily when I'm tryin' t' foight wi' the Battle-Axe ;* because I'm always way too scared I'll hurt somedody any toime I goes ter Swing the thing...!". It's a line the like of which I'd never overheard before...; nor since, truth to tell. Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !
This is not how we do larp in Germany. Suggestion: at least try to play dead if you are on zero hitpoints. That’s way more satisfying for everyone. For the person who wins, the one who looses and even for the healer.
lot of LARPs/battlegames teach bad techniques. Got a warning for sword technique one night, asking marshal about it after was told it good technique for SCA but not for this.
+Gloin79 No one said something different. I do HEMA and I cant figure out how some people have so much fun by stabbing themselves with paper toys ( I know it isnt paper). But I respect it even if I find it funny. Its more a kiddy thing for me. HEMA is historical. You work really hard. If you fail you will feel the pain. Full contact fights is for me a "bit" more manly.
Gloin79 I realize the probability of getting into a sword fight is virtually zero, but the martial disciplines have other benefits. Fitness, forced socialization, competition, some weapon arts have a lot of open handed applicability too, etc. Playing dress up with the developmentally stunted..............not so much.
well yeah but just saying that this isn't some low grade version of HEMA, it's more for fun an role play, it's that you only do LARP if HEMA isn't available. Also "full contact" is an overrated term, for example if you follow Meyer's teachings you fight with contol and technique so that you can create and enter an opening without injuring your opponent and getting hit yourself
I'm sorry but these rules are bullshit and ruining the game... here in germany the rules are completely different... the only rule that is equal is the "don't hit the head or the groin" ... you shouldnt hit the hands or feet but it isn't restricted.. if we engage in a larp fight here, every 2 minutes someone is hit on his/her hand... oh and the most outragous bullshit is the death rule.. i mean what is this shit "kneel down and put your weapon on your head" come on just die you fool... and the healers... there are more ways to heal than just plain magic... you could use "school medicine" or be a wicker witch who heals with herbs... ah and the problem with hits... come on are you telling me that you inflict 3 friggin points with a dagger?? here in germany the hitpoint rules are "big weapon 2 hitpoints, small weapon 1 hitpoint" and thats it!! also... 3 hits on my arm without armour and im dead?? that's ridicolous
Das stimmt. Womöglich ist die LARP- Szene in DE einfach weiter entwickelt, was die Ausrüstung und die Organisation anbelangt... Bsp: Conquest of Mythodea
where do you play? When I'm at a larp, the people who have skills use them, although they hold back most of the time. In a larp you don't fight against another, you play with each other.
I think you might want to learn to English at at least an uneducated hick level before you start trying to tell people they don't understand what English terms mean.
There is this larping group that makes armor basically makes you invulnerable. It's the most bullshit I have ever heard and just seems to be just an excuse to be bad at swordplay and not actually get good.
such attention to safety is no fun if you want to feel immersed. There's LARPs with much more dangerous rules and in fact, I like that. A bunch of bruises are really awesome to carry around. Full of memories. Most people nowadays are afraid to get dirty, get hurt, or feel alive in any way, shape, or form.
PapagiannisWoW like it doesn't seem that bad thought like don't hit the groin hands feet and head nothing wrong with that i'm part a reenactment soceity and we also have a limited hit zone (although we use real steel)

Last rule, no interrupting Anthony.
When I LARPed, we were doing a sci fi, war type theme and there was this one guy who was in this full on futuristic mercenary cyborg solider suit and when it came to battle it was the coolest thing to watch that guy throw down for real.
"We spit on anime" - ayyyyyyyyyyyyy lmao
I'm just trolling, I love many anime series ^_^
+Shadiversity Which ones do you like?
I love that Monty Python reference you made, that was glorious.
Hmm.. If you spit on anime aren't you really just spitting on your tv/screen?
I was half expecting shad to pull out a real sword and use it when the guy said gambeson was one hp
thats bs
Lawrence Adrienne Valero what is?
Cant they just sign some waiver and just attack eachother until one screams mercy or is unconscious? way more fun.
Yes, and there are groups that use more or less real weapons and armour.
The thing is, LARPers are generally more about acting and less about reproducing realistic combat. It's a fantasy where you play a character and not an attempt at actually practising combat.

seigeengine That really depends on the LARP. Although a LARP can never simulate actual combat, you can come pretty close with the right system.
Billy Maize larp weapons are always going to be to malleable to reproduce actual combat, not to mention a guy in full plate armor would have an insane amount of health against a weapon like an arming sword to replicate this well making everything unbalanced
places hand on downed player* "I can show you the world" XD
so there is no rule against hitting people who are kneeling dead, sweet.
SGT: the general's not going to like this.
General : report
SGT: their bailees have bailees, their towers have towers, their tower turrets have turrets, their gatehouses have gatehouses and their machicolations have machicolations! honestly Sir after seeing that half the men deserted on the spot and the other half need quality time with a therapist to get them to stop babbling and drooling
This video brought me more joy than I expected😂

also he forgot the rule against having fun
FUCK! Shield bashing is my fave.
That ending kill though XDDDDD

Kar4ever3 You're definitely bitter seeing as you're still bitching and moaning about something we were never talking about in the first fucking place.
My sister is a teacher, and I think that she wishes she had a mace for just such an occasion.
I'm off to Chaos Wars for a week in July. A little less RP, and a lot more physical, and the weapons are more towards safety than looks, but similar ideas.
Are you part of belegarth?
More of a returning prodigal.
Nice. I'm just joining myself. The owner of our realm is currently talking to the park managers about letting us make plans.
Xekratos Awesome. Where are you located? You planning to head to Chaos?
I'm part of the Hemet CA realm called Helm's Deep. I'd go to chaos but I'm new and don't have means of travel.
See what being rude gets you shad?
Normally We use shinai in a canvas covering to spar (so we don't get pinched by

I hit a lot of knuckles in the past. I also only ever got my knuckles hit about 5 times. I was pretty good with the offensive.
I did that too back in the day!
with this shit you're going to be more busy with: can I hit him there? If you spit on anime does that include rwby and sword art online
sao is shit
no sheild bashing:( well how are suppose to do a proper charge...
honestly didn't expect that
What about thrusting, is that allowed? Seems like all the larp weapons iv seen lend to thrashing and flailing about.
In Sweden, most (combatoriented) larps allow thrusts, with thrustapproved-weapons.
SHAD! I had no idea you were Victoria based. Do you LARP often? Would love to come down to gippslarp some time to duel with you :)
Bro just got Steve austined.
Chad, you're acting just like Lily xD
She has to get it form somewhere ^_^
Shadiversity Haha ^_^
Healers are so underrated
Is every larp fight general rules like this? Ciao !
Dude: WE SPIT ON ANIME!!!
Me:I can hear the tumblr army coming...
Just sitting here wondering if there were some illegal hits at the end there
you gon LEARN TODAY
Is there an age requirement? I played my first LARP at 14 and the all other players were like 18-25.
This is not how we do larp in Germany. Suggestion: at least try to play dead if you are on zero hitpoints. That’s way more satisfying for everyone. For the person who wins, the one who looses and even for the healer.
How many hp for a lighting bolt?
Always wanted to try this but my friends are too boring😅
I love how he shield bashed once XD
he didnt really shield bash just forced the guy to the floor with it shield bashing is when you whallop someone in the face with a shield
Shield bashing is any time you bash someone with a shield. Also, considering he didn't have a shield, I think you might be high.
seigeengine I wasn't talking about Shad..., how about you ask about the comment instead of just insulting someone, hm?
Cosmic Overlord I also wasn't talking about Shad.
How about you go fuck yourself?
seigeengine Woah! How about you just relax, bud.
Like it
I counted about 19 points of damage at the end...
But ... what are the rules for lightning bolts?
Can i do rolls in battles?
do people that larp even know how to use their weapons properly?
This was a community day, most had never picked up a sword before. Generalisations make the generaliser look silly.
It's funny I think the same thing sometimes.
lot of LARPs/battlegames teach bad techniques. Got a warning for sword technique one night, asking marshal about it after was told it good technique for SCA but not for this.
Not necessarily bad, just have to suit the situation.
You come off as the kind of person that makes everyone around them miserable at all times.
But probably not particularly, no.
RIP Shadiversity
......what?
How do double kills work?
Each local have different rule
No shield hits? Why?
No HEMA group in your area?
Would be more manly.
HEMA has completely different goals
+Gloin79 No one said something different. I do HEMA and I cant figure out how some people have so much fun by stabbing themselves with paper toys ( I know it isnt paper). Wow this is an old video
0:49 Not anymore
Try dagohir is way more aggressive
Why no head?????
But if you can´t attack the groint, where´s the point? :D It´s the first rule of Ameri-Do-Te: ALWAYS attack the groint!
LARP is bullshit!
lol english is not my first language, I am german. sorry if I made a mistake there :D
Loadalama It's groin.
DKWDDK
hodor
AT T hold the door.....

So basically you want everyone to have no skill what so ever! WOW
right!
with this larping you can only do the simplest of strikes and everything else is either ''unfair advantage'' or ''painful''
where do you play?
When I'm at a larp, the people who have skills use them, although they hold back most of the time.
In a larp you don't fight against another, you play with each other.
I think you guys doing foamweapon sport and not real Larp. I mean you don't automatcly do roll play if you are playing wow.
I think you might want to learn to English at at least an uneducated hick level before you start trying to tell people they don't understand what English terms mean.
loser and reject party? jk
too many rules. Do it like the Russian's
There is this larping group that makes armor basically makes you invulnerable. It's the most bullshit I have ever heard and just seems to be just an excuse to be bad at swordplay and not actually get good.
HAHAHA, have you played in this LARP?
Have you experienced actual armour?
Such a stupid game for people with zero martial art skills and experience
yeah..real men like you play assassins creed....
Skills still help for hitting widout getting hit.
So this was cringy...
way too sissy rules...
define sissy rules
such attention to safety is no fun if you want to feel immersed.
There's LARPs with much more dangerous rules and in fact, I like that.
A bunch of bruises are really awesome to carry around. Full of memories.
Most people nowadays are afraid to get dirty, get hurt, or feel alive in any way, shape, or form.
PapagiannisWoW
like it doesn't seem that bad thought like don't hit the groin hands feet and head nothing wrong with that i'm part a reenactment soceity and we also have a limited hit zone (although we use real steel)
I like your rules, though. At least there is a real reason for the restriction on hit zones!
PapagiannisWoW
ok how would you want the rules
