My tip; don’t rely on materials to think it’ll improve your art style. The quote “use whatever stuff is available in front of you is enough” so a pen, pencil, eraser, paper will work. I’ve learned this lesson 2 years ago when I asked myself “am I to flex, or am I to draw?” It was a waste of money. Sure my mother is very supportive about it and wants me to experience new stuff, but I’m still young and learning from my current state hence why buying shit ton of pens that are the same size but different brands or immediately moving from lineart to painting in a week will be a difficult. Back then, my mindset was just following what other artists own and think “oh if I own this, I will possess his style!” Nah, I was just wasting shit. So learn from my mistakes and study first before buying high quality materials
this tip is helpful, but you have to realize that a lot of cheap art supplies might cao your skill level since they will not allow you to do some things that you might want to do, you still need good art supplies, but only to extend your skill cap, not to actually improve
@@harrietjameson yes, decent, cheap, but very good stuff. But buying a ton or buying specific stuff from other artists like “*gasp* I need this mechanical pencil so that I can draw like him!” is going too far imo
I have fallen into stuff like this. But I have recently started going back to drawing with a pen and paper. The people who are asking for advice should also be more specific on what part of drawing they want to improve. If you ask a vague question, expect a vague answer.
yeah no this advice sucks even if you draw a lot, it doesn't mean you'll improve without doing anything else. Color theory, anatomy, new art styles, inspiration come from many other things ! By drawing a lot, sure, you'll be able to do something better and quicker, but it's never gonna improve the way you create other things/subjects.
I’m still drawing every day but I wouldn’t recommend it , I say just study alot study like a med student then analyze what your lacking , for art block I just keep a list for characters on hand to draw when I don’t have motivation
For fanartists there's two solid ways to get better: 1) becoming obsessed with a certain character 2) out of spite. Spite is a great motivator bc if ppl hate what you do, just make more to piss them off. (of course that's a slightly satirical comment, only the first option has a real life applicable value)
Wow then I somehow did the first one long time. Where my most favorite character to draw was always Sasuke Uchiha since I looooooooooooooved drawing his duckbutt hair and it reminded me of how I drew the same photo of him 2 times in one year but months apart and the second photo showed my improvements! I sadly don't draw a lot like I used to but I think maybe I'll try drawing again

Hmm while this may not be the best tip but for height matching maybe draw lines from the front view to where you want the back view to be that way you can match at least the height of the drawing
heres the best advice i'vee ever gotten for art NEVER throw away art. don't compare to other artists, compare yourself to what you used to make. look for things in ur old art that you have improved at, and things that have stayed the same. and don't be afraid of criticism. you should always strive to improve as an atrist
@@joined_shores_art I don't have enough space anymore but I used to do that. Bow I have a massive portfolio in my closet. It's pretty old and broken I think I need a new one lol
Yes! I'm been saving all of my art ever since I started to draw in 2017 (unless I really don't like it but I usually throw that away after I make it but not years later) I remember being so shocked when one of my family members told me that I should throw away my old sketchbooks since I'm not using them
The 11:30 tip remembered a tip that gave me one of my teachers that said something like "When you ran out of ideas is when you are the most creative" and then proceeded to gave us for homework a freaking 150 symbols ideas only using a square with a circle and some triangles inside of it! I wanted to cry when I couldn't pass from 100. Worst tip EVER!
lmaoo honestly it's so pointless drawing aimlessly. if there is no end goal or reason for even making a drawing the results always come out badly, it just doesn't work that way i found
Reminds me of my metals and jewelry course. Had to do fifty topics/word associations we DO like and another fifty that we don't. Then, each category had to have at least 10-15 designs drawn for them. This was the first assignment. I dropped the class immediately
17:07 As a coloured pencil artist, I wouldn't recommend going from dark to light since with coloured pencils, you can layer a dark colour over the lighter one but you can't go vice versa (with some higher end pencils you can go from dark to light) but that also depends on the style you're trying to acheive. For me personally, I aim for realism whenever I do coloured pencils . However, whuth more stylised work you might do a different approach IDK
That's interesting! I have a super stylized art style and predominantly use coloured pencils. It may be because I use copic markers as a base, but I actually go from dark to light!
@@PrinceBaraButterfly Yeah with alcohol markers, I find it easier to lighten up the base with coloured pencils than to darken it. However you can approach it however you find it suitable for your style!!
I use colored pencils and I always go light to dark. I also do this with most other mediums I use. It’s my preference to start with light and move on to dark. It’s easier to add more saturation then to go back to light, especially with things like markers (at least for me). The edit is purely because I am indecisive lol and can never finalize things
"to practice expressions, use a mirror or selfies of yourself" Me, who can't look at my own face for extended amounts of time without having a physical reactions: welp im fucked
You can also look at photos of other people and practice like that. I use stock photos some times cuz they are very exaggerated, much better than models who try to be "aesthetics" with their mild expressions at best. Hope it helps!
The people who cover face features with hair are the same ones that put the hands in the pockets and make their characters wear socks at the beach. The same ones that take a photo, blur it and put it on the background. The same ones that put plants brushes in front of clothing folds areas. The same ones that crop the drawing in strange positions. The same ones that put their watermark on a specific blurred untextured part trying to hide something.
11:25 That tip can work for when the person already knows how to draw and is out of ideas or just wants to practice without wasting a lot of paper. It's not a good tip for those who don't know how to draw and want to learn.
Tips for beginers:always pracrise 24/7/365 without taking any breaks at all, this will give artist the ability to get stressed out.never use refference and only rely on imagination because the human brain is able to see object without even seing it.always draw the same thing and this will make artist stuck on the same topic on and will make them waste time even more:D(just kidding lmao😂)
11:50 It legit always discourages/demotivates me when someone films themselves drawing stuff that looks so good and thought through and then telling me "not to worry about it being perfect"
Depends what level you are if your at the learning level where you still need to learn how to draw eyes noses mouth ect yeah no you shouldn't use any styles when learning to draw
@@hinamatsuro1908 This has given me the motivation to draw EVEN bigger eyes. Eyes so big that they are the face. My character will be able to see into your soul and deconstruct your molecular level with a simple glance. You will not be able to stop them, for it will be far too late
@TappyLePaostep 1 line art Step 2 flat colors using bucket Step 3 add layer and lower the opacity Step 4 black and Just draw and bucket the part you want the shading. this works with white for lighting. Art tip for people who want to be able to draw: 1 believe in yourself. 2 don't be too optimistic or too negative. 3 listen to what people say about your art and be critical about it. 4 think too much and you'll get sick 5 never skip resting! U can't draw if your body & eyes are sore. Go! Do something else. 6 make sure to check your progress once in a while. For that u need to keep your old drawings. Be ready to get embarrassed. It's going to be painful.
I got a good art tip for everyone (but mostly for people who have an already defined style) [Draw when inspiration hits you regardless of it's an original concept or not] I feel like my art style has improved from doing that or it increased my confidence with my art or both
Lmaooo my friend told me my TikTok was in your video LMAO yes the ✨ just add more hair ✨ is just a joke or for lazy artists who don’t feel like learning, you should definitely practice the things you struggle with xD I’m glad it made you laugh tho!
art tip: don't pressure yourself to try to do better by doing things that are out of your comfort zone, if you want to do those things, do it but don't just do them because you 'need' to improve, do it because you want to improve, also dont pressure yourself to make everything look like the reference when drawing a character
16:53 for the watercolor, color pencil, and acrylic her advice was a 10 out of 10. Traditional mediums are super finicky about how you layer them. If you don't do it in the right order your artwork will be ruined. Bur your right about digital you can go in whatever order you are comfortable doing. That one of digital biggest advantages.
I really hope the "just cover stuff you can't draw" one is a joke cuz doing this is basically one of the most cowardly things you can do as an artists If you wanna improve, challenge yourselves, people
But hear me out... What if I have it really realistic and I'm happy with it but I forgot it on the other side- *and I don't mean just the other eye I mean the whole face at this point* `-`
I kinda like the idea of making a bunch of boxes. I do that everyday before I start work & I fill the with 10 -20 thumbnail designs for the client's project. Then I pick the 3 best & make 3 color/ lighting comps of those
When I drew back at school I icould only consistently do side perspective and often just put a basic shirt under my custerfuk demon heads most of the time I never thought I was that good but got praised everyday for it
Yoooo, would you like to make a " how to Draw Anatomy " Tutorial? I know Anatomy and all, but If Like to see it in your Style since you are more detailed in your approach.
17:03 while she says in the video is truth (you work from light to dark in watercolors), you can also work from middle tones and get highlights. The trick is using transparent watercolors (opaques are a bit more hard to remove, but is not impossible) and using a brush with clean water and paper tissues. Or use the same method while the layer is wet, so you can have highlights with a medium color. Is a bit tricky, but as soon you know how to use it, is pretty useful.
For the last one.. as someone who uses all of thoss mediums.. that was a good tip for beginners.. it helps you understand how the materials work.. but as you said, once you understood them you can use them as you want.. (except watercolor.. those are always light to dark no exception)
The "draw a lot and push yourself to get original ideas" thing is pretty useless. I don't want randomness, I want order since that's what ultimately is gonna help me improve steadily. What makes a drawing better isn't originality, but good composition, great anatomy/stylization, good color contrast, counterchange, etc. I think originality and drawing are two separate things that doesn't come entwined. You can be great at drawing without having much originality. Just look at all those paintings from the XVII century and before: Most of them where paintings of regular people doing simple things, yet they ourstand because of the richness of each composition and art techniques used to create them.
I can tell the ‘just draw’ things doesn’t work being some one just starting out as I drawed alot when I was young and I liked art classes at school a lot , however now i learn about proportion anatomy stuff like that I improved alot
So about the big eyes situation I’d say practice enough and try to draw it simplistic and not complex anime I’ve seen many kids make their eyes extremely cramped and die to them being kids who don’t understand character design the head would also be very cramped
i made an eyeless character once not because i cant draw eyes, i'm about okay and almost decent at drawing eyes but i wanted the character to have like a boring feeling so in my attempt to add him the less personality i could i ended up limiting his expressions
Hmm i think you can still have the character have their eyes and still not have them expressive- It's not just the eyes alone that should carry the role of personality so other stuff like gestures, body language are still able to give some life into the character. One way to limit expression and personality is not adding any difference in emotion in their body language or faces maybe- Like have them in a permanent neutral state kind of-
13:55 this is so me. I have a big difficult to have ideas to draw because I have a lot to learn yet. So it's hard to me to know where to start, decide the composition, perspective, or even in simple images it's hard to decide a pose, and then some people say "Oh, just draw". Yeah, of course, then magically the knowledge will just pop up in my mind and I'll start creating the so called "masterpieces" 👏👏👏
« I guess right now everyone has a pronoun » You don’t say… x) Okay I’ll stop making fun of you, because that was honestly a very useful video! Thank you very much for that! :)
The first tip, to improve that advice I suppose you could just also flip it vertically, that way the hands also match so if the character just turned around.
Just a tip: if you're unsure of someone's pronouns just use they/them! 🥰 It helps to try to work it into your vocabulary so it becomes a natural flow in your speech and you can modify it when you get to know someone and/or their pronouns! 💖💖 It's a little better than saying "I don't know this person's pronouns, it seems everyone has pronouns these days" because everyone has had pronouns for a loooong time. Like when we refer to cisgender people with he/him or she/her. Those are pronouns! Pronouns don't apply just to non-cisgender people so it's not too hard to adapt!
usinf they them is still misgedering someone though! if you dont know someone's pronouns ask or find out or use regular nounds like the persons name or "the person" "someone" like i just did :0
@@caterpillaremoji4249 They is honestly fine if you don't know someone's pronouns, it's not misgendering. If you keep using they when the person tells you their pronouns (and it's not "they") then it's misgendering and it's something transphobes are known to do. They'll agressively use the wrong gendered pronoun for trans people or keep using "they" even if they don't normally use it much, just to draw attention.
When I need to draw the other eye digitally, I get a reference for what my eyes should look like and then I draw them at the same time. Mostly the same for traditional! It was something my art teacher told me and it's helped me ever since!
If you're drawing an animal like a cat, or a jackal, you can study the movement of the ears of the creature you are drawing. One con with this is eventually you imagine how the ears would move on your own head and then suddenly when you run, you feel a phantom tail, and when you're angry you feel animalistic ears moving and possibly wings bursting out of your back. You can't speak of this to anyone because you'll sound crazy.
Hii! I'm a artist and I wanna share some tips that helps me in art 1. Imagination. You will need to imagine the thing/person you're trying to draw. You won't be able to draw without imaginations of what you're drawing (unless you're just doing random doodles or some sort of challenge) 2. Style. You will need to create your own unique art style. This relates to your imagination too! You will need to pick an art style you're going for. Some peoples can have multiple, but its up to you about how many styles you want
As someone who has worked with watercolor and acrylic the tip in 16:52 is actually pretty good. Watercolor is translucent so whenever shading and lighting, you have to go from light to dark. For acrylic, it's best to go to the midtones first so that you have a better time mixing your colors either on canvas or on your palette.
"I guess right now everyone has a pronoun" sir I love your videos but people have had pronouns for as long as language has existed 😭 (also if it helps, just using they/them instead of "she or he or they" is a pretty good catch-all and it's much less of a mouthfull!)
He knows that he and she are old words, he's not a moron. Ignoring the fact that there are languages without pronouns (thus making your comment technically incorrect), he was poking fun at the recent obsession with what pronouns other people use to refer to you.
Also because not all anime characters have big eyes, including Boku no Hero that is in the Thumb, which balances big eyes and smaller eyes giving all a diversity of expression to the cast
13:43 I honestly think this person has a very good tip except he’s marketing it as the wrong thing. This Art tip is one I got from an art teacher I really respected quite a while ago. It’s not to make you a better artist, but it’s to train your imagination skills as an artist. Drawing in thumbnail sizes will keep you from obsessing over details and will make you draw quickly so you can fill in 100 boxes. However, the art tip my teacher gave me was that if I ever get an idea for an illustration, I shouldn’t draw the first idea that comes to my head. Instead, I should draw 50 small thumbnails of that same idea, making little tweaks to it and changing it in every thumbnail. This will help me get out more ideas and branch out from my original idea and find an even better version of my original idea. It trains your imagination and makes you explore your ideas on a much deeper level. It also makes you draw things you otherwise wouldn’t draw or things you think are weird or wouldn’t fit well because you have so much space you need to fill and you just want to put something down on the paper. So yeah, good art tip, but it’s to train your imagination, not your drawing skills! :)
your voice is so nice and calming. I like to watch art videos before i go to bed because i usually wake up and draw while eating breakfast and your voice helps me stay tired so i can get better sleep. Keep making good content!
Honestly I disagree with your points on 12:30. While it is important to draw things by learning fundamentals and staying within a confinement your comfortable with, drawing tons of art you’ve never drawn before can really bring inspiration and really help beginner artists to expand their comfort zone. I feel like this person could’ve definitely worded things better, but I do still feel like what they were trying to say can seriously help with artists that are new or are just drawing as a hobby. Not every artist is going to want to draw the same way as a professional and not every artist wants to be a professional. That’s just my take on it tho.
Not sure if this could be considered a tip, but it's helped me be a bit less critical in my sketch work. Work in a permanent medium (I use a pen). You start to build confidence in your work and where you put down lines. I have now 2-3 sketchbooks filled with just pen doodles and sketches and warm ups and I can see how I've become more confident in line placement as the past 2 years has gone by.
The 'nose bridge to the eyebrow' one is my favourite tip, honestly. It's one thing I always draw and get really confused when I see people not doing the same.
okay i really love how he watches the whole video first before talking i hate it when people interrupt the video to say something like just wait so thank you
13:28 I think it's a reference to those get healthy quick scams that tell you that you can somehow lose weight without changing your eating habit. Like "Don't change your eating, just walk." or "Don't change your eating, just drink water." Because drinking water and walking are basics, but you still have to change eating habits to get real and faster results.
Great presentation! You’ve used man pictures and talked freely… I could understand everything very good and the informations were great and not to much… Overall a 9/10 !!! 👍 😂
17:50 "Starting out with a very dark color, then mid tones, then highlights, then darkest darks." I really love this tip this and I have been going by it since then. My shading and lighting have never been better! Thank you!
13:15 non-artists and beginner artists always make comments like this. I am tired of the shallow puffed up compliments people give to other people who are doing the bare minimum. It’s almost like people feel the need to praise another person if they have a pencil on their hand. A “masterpiece” is Mona Lisa, David etc. Dear beginners and who have no idea in art, before calling a drawing a “mAsTeRpiEcE”, compare them to actual masterpieces
Me when someone says to not draw big animie eyes while looking at my sketchbook; "You have lost the privilege to look at my sketchbook." EDIT; OMG tysm for 5 likes!
i swear some of these CANT be serious. like the hair one and the pretty boy thing, if those arent just shitposts i dont know what do do with my life anymore
Sometimes I just like to „just draw“ just for the fun of it and I wanna try figure out the anatomy and right perspective etc myself or make stuff up. But I couldnt have made it to the level I am today without practice and learning, like going to figure drawing classes, drawing and painting still life, using real photos and trying to redraw them as practice. So the tip “just draw” is funny to me, cos if you wanna improve your skills, you wont get better by just drawing. But if you wanna draw but you dont necessarily want to become an artist per se or draw realistic or something, but just to have a good time or express your emotions or it’s meditative to you, then go for it! That’s when “just draw” makes sense and is a valid statement to me. 😊❤ cos thats how i would use or understand that statement.
the anime one hit close a bit cuz when I was in High School my Art teacher (was a requirement to take the actual class I wanted to take which was cartooning since it lends to what I want to draw more) and the teacher would literally fail any student that drew the eyes too big or the hair too spiked without giving any reasoning or help and when she wasn't failing people that wanted to draw in a more cartoon art style we had to read The Da Vinci Code for some reason despite how minimal that story has to do with art. I honestly learned more about shading and proportions from one of my friends that drew a lot than I did from that class, he even drew me pieces specifically for me to trace to get muscle memory down for certain parts of the body like hands and how glasses tend to lay across the face
Artwood recommended me Loomis book and damnnnnnn it made me improve 100 times than videos. FASTER as I'm such a slow learner. That book was gifted to us from heavens by god.

As someone who does traditional art (pen and paper), the 'flip the model and erase the inside' tip from the beginning is absolute Hell
I was never in my life thinking about doing this thing, so weird idea!
Same. I've found that a lot of these types of videos tend to focus on digital art, which isn't a bad thing (as long as the tips make sense and they don't say anything weird, wrong, or pointlessly vague), but it's annoying bc I can't just add a layer and change the opacity or something.
Just use a ruler and identify where the height of your art and the size as well
Use a mirror
Hmm while this may not be the best tip but for height matching maybe draw lines from the front view to where you want the back view to be that way you can match at least the height of the drawing
heres the best advice i'vee ever gotten for art
NEVER throw away art. don't compare to other artists, compare yourself to what you used to make. look for things in ur old art that you have improved at, and things that have stayed the same. and don't be afraid of criticism. you should always strive to improve as an atrist
I print all of my stuff out and hang them on my walls lmao
@@joined_shores_art I don't have enough space anymore but I used to do that. Bow I have a massive portfolio in my closet. It's pretty old and broken I think I need a new one lol
Yes, seconding this.
+, you can even add on to or remake old stuff for practice.
One art block cure I have is going through old drawings and redrawing them
Yes! I'm been saving all of my art ever since I started to draw in 2017 (unless I really don't like it but I usually throw that away after I make it but not years later)
I remember being so shocked when one of my family members told me that I should throw away my old sketchbooks since I'm not using them
The 11:30 tip remembered a tip that gave me one of my teachers that said something like "When you ran out of ideas is when you are the most creative" and then proceeded to gave us for homework a freaking 150 symbols ideas only using a square with a circle and some triangles inside of it! I wanted to cry when I couldn't pass from 100. Worst tip EVER!
lmaoo honestly it's so pointless drawing aimlessly. if there is no end goal or reason for even making a drawing the results always come out badly, it just doesn't work that way i found
I feel like I kinda get what she was going for, but 150 symbols is WAY too much 😕
Reminds me of my metals and jewelry course. Had to do fifty topics/word associations we DO like and another fifty that we don't.
Then, each category had to have at least 10-15 designs drawn for them.
This was the first assignment.
I dropped the class immediately

As a coloured pencil artist, I wouldn't recommend going from dark to light since with coloured pencils, you can layer a dark colour over the lighter one but you can't go vice versa (with some higher end pencils you can go from dark to light) but that also depends on the style you're trying to acheive. For me personally, I aim for realism whenever I do coloured pencils . However, whuth more stylised work you might do a different approach IDK
That's interesting! I have a super stylized art style and predominantly use coloured pencils. It may be because I use copic markers as a base, but I actually go from dark to light!
@@PrinceBaraButterfly
Yeah with alcohol markers, I find it easier to lighten up the base with coloured pencils than to darken it. However you can approach it however you find it suitable for your style!!
Yeah, I generally go from light to dark. I find it easier to manage.
I use colored pencils and I always go light to dark. I also do this with most other mediums I use. It’s my preference to start with light and move on to dark. It’s easier to add more saturation then to go back to light, especially with things like markers (at least for me).
The edit is purely because I am indecisive lol and can never finalize things

art tip: don't pressure yourself to try to do better by doing things that are out of your comfort zone, if you want to do those things, do it but don't just do them because you 'need' to improve, do it because you want to improve, also dont pressure yourself to make everything look like the reference when drawing a character
Tip: if you have difficulty drawing feet or even hands try drawing them alone in different angles

(except watercolor.. those are always light to dark no exception)
that hair tip is such a saviour, who knew you could get away with such a thing just by adding hair!
Just look at all those paintings from the XVII century and before: Most of them where paintings of regular people doing simple things, yet they ourstand because of the richness of each composition and art techniques used to create them.

i made an eyeless character once
not because i cant draw eyes, i'm about okay and almost decent at drawing eyes
but i wanted the character to have like a boring feeling so in my attempt to add him the less personality i could i ended up limiting his expressions
Hmm i think you can still have the character have their eyes and still not have them expressive-
It's not just the eyes alone that should carry the role of personality so other stuff like gestures, body language are still able to give some life into the character.

« I guess right now everyone has a pronoun »
You don’t say… x)
Okay I’ll stop making fun of you, because that was honestly a very useful video!
It's a little better than saying "I don't know this person's pronouns, it seems everyone has pronouns these days" because everyone has had pronouns for a loooong time.
They'll agressively use the wrong gendered pronoun for trans people or keep using "they" even if they don't normally use it much, just to draw attention.
i'm glad u brought it up in such a polite way! i was thinking it sounded a bit uninformed but didn't know how to bring it up

Drawing both eyes at the same time makes it easier to make them even ✨
Hii! I'm a artist and I wanna share some tips that helps me in art
1. Imagination. You will need to imagine the thing/person you're trying to draw. You won't be able to draw without imaginations of what you're drawing (unless you're just doing random doodles or some sort of challenge)
"I guess right now everyone has a pronoun" sir I love your videos but people have had pronouns for as long as language has existed 😭
(also if it helps, just using they/them instead of "she or he or they" is a pretty good catch-all and it's much less of a mouthfull!)
Yeah, and more grammatically correct.

I honestly think this person has a very good tip except he’s marketing it as the wrong thing.
