The only piece of the power nine that is legal in commander based on the rules committee’s ban list is timetwister, the wheel effect. However, rule zero says that if the people you are playing with allow, you can run anything, even if its on that list. There is a group of players who play whats known as cedh or competitive elder dragon highlander, which is the precious name of the commander format, and they optimize their decks as much as possible and strictly adhere to the ban list. Their goal is still to hang out playing commander, as with any, casual groups, but they want a higher power, faster game.

mtg used to have a more varied and interesting mix of art styles and methods. Nowadays the art direction feels a lot more standardized even among different artists. A single set has more cohesion now but the cards don't stand out as much anymore and there's definitely less creative license for poses and such.

As someone who pretty much only ever sees the MTG art through your videos, I think that most of the art looks just fine; most of it doesn't seem particularly good, but most of it isn't notably bad at all. It's just there.

Okay, so I have a lot of thoughts about Magic art and will probably come back to say more here but I gotta say something Magic art consistently has that yugioh lacks hard. Backgrounds and context. If you go to scryfall and look at the art for the last set you can see that almost every creature is somewhere in the world. They are in structures and workshops and hideouts and arenas and desolate hellscapes. Then I look at Yugioh and a large majority of creatures are floating in the air or standing on the ground with a lightning or shadow pattern behind them. The most detail I see is in the Kashtiras, except half of them go back to space voids. Half the tearelements are floating in the water, and the only indication their world is anyway different from a normal ocean is the field spell.
I think a good comparison here is Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines vs Kashtira Riseheart/Ariseheart. Both are the central antagonists of their arc, but I think Norns Ceramic throne shows a lot more personality and depth than the Rise Hearts.
I do totally get wishing it was easier to get full arts. I wonder if it has anything to do with doujin culture or anime culture, because some incredibly popular series have like no fan creations. I do love that I can buy prints from the artists themselves, or get cards signed or altered. Speaking of which, credit your dang artists!
Edit: Re: commander, but Black lotus and the Moxes and Time Walk are all banned in commander. That said there are bonkers expensive cards you can play in commander. Mishra's workshop, Timetwister, and Bazaar of Baghdad are all effective and absurdly expensive but largely because of legacy and vintage. Ungodly Expensive cards in commander typically are because of things like only being printed 20 years ago in a limited run set designed for beginners. The absolute best staples typically go around $60 iirc. That said my magic player half absolutely envies Yu-gi-oh's aggressive reprint policy. Also ban Sol Ring.

Different strokes for different folks. YGOs art is diverse, colorful, over-the-top and works well with portraying the individualism of the monsters. I would have Yugioh art as wallpaper in my game room. MTGs art is consistent, legible, pays homage to the classical techniques (some of em belong in museums, lets be honest here) and works better for story telling. I would have MTG art framed and hanged in both my livingroom and gameroom wall.

the thing with magic set and their art is that they're more cohesive and focus, if the theme of the set is space Greek myths (aka Theros) all the cards in set will be space Greek myths themed, so the _flavor_ of any given magic set is through the roof compared to any yugioh set.
By comparison any given yugioh set can contain in it: the cool dragon, diabetes inducing, kamen raider and toy story archetypes (1), and what is the connection between them? absolutely nothing is pure random bs... but kudos for variety I suppose
(1): the particular archetypes I was thinking of, apparently weren't in the same set, but a you get cookie to if you guess correctly which one I was thinking of, hint: they were more or least contemporaries :p

Some cards where so bad as a DuelLog DuelLogs Logs joke; others where unfunly broken.

I like MTG art, but I will admit it isn't often very bombastic or hyper cute. It tends to be more realistic and grounded, since they try to make all couple hundred cards in a set fit in a cohesive world, so something like a random explosion of colors needs a good reason to actually be included. The best way to show the difference is how much more effort is put into the background of the art, where in Yu-Gi-Oh it's often nothing for monsters (smoky swirl of color, action lines, or even just a blank canvas for example), while in MTG it's got just as much of a focus as whatever the card is about. I'm not saying either is better or worse than the other, but they definitely aren't trying to appeal to the same tastes.
MTG art isn't exactly afraid of leaning into the grotesque either, which leads to some of the examples shown in the video. Living Wall is an old card that is actually horrifying, with what appears to be an embryo in the center and some teeth to one side and a big and small eye to the other.
Secret Lairs are often more focused on making interesting art or card framing, which is where that cereal box art Ghalta and funky Mycoloth comes from for example. One secret lair, full text box basic lands, actually took away the art as a meme, and instead explain in great detail how that basic land functions.
Old Unsets tend to have bizarre art (like City of Ass having an asscrack), but the basic lands are often extremely beautiful.
On another topic, White used to be the weakest color specifically in Commander (because aggro was a weak strategy and they didn't get enough, if any, card advantage to keep up with 3 other players), but it has gotten much better over the past few years, and is actually really strong now.

@@nmr7203 They have gotten better at giving some archetypes stuff in the backgrounds of their monsters now to give more life to those archetypes worlds, like Floowandereeze or Tri-brigade, but generic backgrounds still show up frequently, especially for cards without archetypes. Drytron monsters get a pretty generic starry space background, the retrain Ishizu cards all have generic smoky and dark backgrounds, Mathmechs are in a colorful void. P.U.N.K.s are one of my favorite archetypes, and while there is a lot of action going on in the foreground of the monster cards, the background is still basically non-existent.
The focus of Yu-Gi-Oh monster arts is on the monster and what they can do, not nearly as much as where they are or what is going on around them. It makes some sense for them to do this. Some archetypes have very little story behind them, or the story is better told elsewhere. It also makes foiling simpler, since generic backgrounds can be made all foil without any detailing needed. In a similar vein to foiling, when showing off the art for things like summon cut-ins on simulators like Master Duel, they can easily cut generic backgrounds.

the moxen are banned in EDH, like most of the power 9.
    Shaharazad as well. 😅
MTG has many great artists like Magali Villeneuve, Dominik Mayer, Seb MacKinnon and John Avon. And they ventured more into Anime styles in recent sets. In Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, then the New Phyrexia Planeswalkers… plenty of Anime options there 😅
Both games have their own style and I kinda like both. 😊

Current MTG art is often gorgeous but also too homogenic. Like every artist has to draw in a similar way. A friend used to collect cards by Rebecca Guay, which has a quite distinct artstyle compared to the average.
YGO might not credit artists, but you can still tell the differences between a Traptrix and a Noble Knight, as well the fact there's no centric universe besides lore cards (e.g. Branded) there's a big clash of different themes that makes them stand out from each other.

Yugioh cards look good, but they also have a generic feel to them. Most monsters are just a character posing on top of a patterned background.
Magic art usually lacks the pop of other games. Squeezing all the details of a full-size portrait onto a card and makes it hard to see enough of the art to appreciate.

It all depends on personal taste. Around a year ago I quit yugioh and while choosing which card game to play I chose magic because of the art. while I can tell that the art has become more basic and "safe", I feel yugioh is much worst because its becoming vanguard, where all the cards are generic anime charcater or huge monsters/mechs with a million things on the screen because more=better

  • @leetri
    @leetri Рік тому

My main problem with MTG art is that it lacks character. A lot of the cards are just some regular dude or just some animal that exists on the plane, and they reprint cards with completely different art which makes them even less special since there's now multiple different things with the same name. On top of that, a lot of it is just generic D&D fantasy stuff you've seen a million times already. Meanwhile in Yugioh, all the monsters are their own unique characters that are easily identifiable when they appear in other cards because they have an established design. Just look at for example Zombie World and you'll easily be able to identify several other cards in the art like Bone Mouse and Zoma the Spirit. Couple that with unique and interesting character designs and people will get really attached to them and draw tons of fan art.
MTG does have some consistent characters, like Atraxa, Fblthp or the Planeswalkers, but they're in the vast minority and are usually not as visually appealing as Yugioh characters.
My one complaint about Yugioh art is that they've gone a bit too far in the waifu direction, I miss when we got a lot of funky monsters like Gren Maju Da Eiza or Mystic Clown. Just some real freaks that makes you wonder how much LSD the artists are on.
