Dub techno in a nutshell: Put a tape delay on a minor triad sawtooth synth, auto filter that synth, use a 909 kick and a field recording based hi-hat, put a rain sample over the whole mix, extend this pattern until it lasts 20 minutes. Boom, you have a dub techno track. Just joking. I love dub techno.

Tip, for anyone who's very new to this. I came to these kind of tutorials always thinking I needed the same synths, but it's helpful to use a different one so that your ears do more work instead of just copying teacher. So I just recreated this sound using Helm Synth, saving 200 bucks and getting a good enough result. Synthesis starts out looking complicated but the basic principles aren't.
This is 100% true. The principles are the same on most synths. I would say you'll learn even more by doing it this way, recreating a sound from 1 synth on a different one. It doesn't have to be exactly the same end result.

Random question- i see people talking about a frequency level/hertz etc with filters and synths. Is there a sort of ballpark high and low for ambient dub, or is it more just doing it by ear?
It's really just all about doing it by ear. Especially with Dub Techno it's about dynamic range. The music looping is generally quite dark and you save the big bright frequencies for things you want to come in and grab attention, but then let them fade back out again. Gotta give these things space. 🖤

These specific samples are from Atlas 1. Unfortunately because of licensing we can't include them in the Atlas 2 release, Atlas 2 has 1,500 new samples.

Which fx? All the delay and verb? I probably over did it, as by the time you start adding more parts it might need to be dialed back, but it shouldn't affect the mix so long as it isn't too washed out or add low mud that might compete with the low end. I doubt it though.
Massive & the like £$,s are not the only synths you need to make dub techno. The same results can be achieved using synths/effects etc that are available for free This is why so many dt tracks sound the same. Try to use your imagination..Oh yeah, make your own samples.
Haha fair call! It was a little more true 4 years ago when this video was made, but not really today with Pigments, PhasePlant, and the other cool synths out there. Same techniques applies to them all though. :)

Nice vid on the sounds but why is the musical knowledge of bedroom producers so bad? A basic triad of 1,3, 5 is not what you had. That is a major triad. You never mentioned you flattened the third making it a minor triad (which also gives it that distinct dub techno sound). More misinformation confusing people. Sheesh!
Are you sure?? Ive personally always thought of it as the first, 3rd and 5th note in the 8 notes of the minor scale. Online docs do say a minor triad is the root, minor third and perfect fifth. Granted I'm not classically trained (these days you certainly don't need to be lol) I did find when i was teaching local DJs in Auckland it was counter productive to give them too much info. So i was like "here are the notes in the minor scale' 'Now take the 1, 3, 5 and thats your basic minor triad.'

This isn’t dub techno! Listen to Quantec or Basic Channel.... or Scion or Substance... that’s dub techno. I find this stuff more like slow trance.
