Hi, Jeff isn't here... Sorry! But I used erentalservice.com as a brokerage service. They charge 50% of the monthly rent upon successful find. & For just showing place maybe 2k or 3k (NPR) which is of-course deductible from the above. No discounts. My current landlord said he did list the current apartment in Facebook Marketplace as well.
Thanks for the information - that website seems pretty accurate from my experience. $400-500 for foreignors seems about right if they stick to 'local' prices. They can also end up paying a lot more if it's their first time in the country, as you need to know the true local prices in order to not get caught into paying over-priced rent as a foreignor (something I fell into the first time I came!) These videos are super useful for first-timers coming to Nepal :)
Yeah, I bet you had to spent relatively more in your first visit than on your second because of 'Tourist Traps' and what not. Getting in contact with locals (non-biz) will hopefully help to shave off some redundant costs. Come for a 3rd round, once Covid settles, whenever that it. :)
You can live for as low as 300 usd in kathmandu for a month. And in Himalayas or in outer less touristic more beautiful places you can live for as cheap as 200 usd with rent at 50 usd a month. I am saying this as i am an indian who lives near nepal border (a small town in india bihar) and i live in a big bunglow 3 rooms hall kitchen for just 60 usd a month.
You have hugely ignored the "family part" and in my opinion fixated largely around "Living Single" and minimalistic.... When you have children, bills sky rocket.... It is ridiculous how, schools have become so expensive.... Renting just two rooms costs you around 16000 NRS... even few kms away from ring-road...... Why I make this an issue is.... Employers have argued with me based on statistics pulled out of thin air and internet and videos like yours( no offence), when asking for a raise.... The entire office staff had to present 4 months worth of bills, to justify our cause. The HR head, even being a Nepali and knowing the ground reality, was busy buttering the foreign country director and putting whispers..... Why is it that HRs take it personally or get jealous, when there is raise in someone else's salary ?
Don't let HRs getaway with random statistics or even videos like mine which are just a data-point for a specific context as you said. Get Glassdoor, Payscale metrics in-front of them and hopefully it helps. Bonus: Throw inflation into the equation. I am planning to make an update video for this year as now I live with a family member and my expenses have gone through the roof at the new place as you described.
