Happy Monday guys! The Nissan Sentra is kind of like the forgotten choice in the compact sedan segment, but it gets some updates this year that make it even more enticing next to some drab looking rivals. We just wish the company would put a turbo or hybrid engine under the hood. Would you choose one over a Civic, Corolla, or Elantra?
I've been in a Sentra, Corolla, and an Elantra. While the refreshed Sentra for 2024 is welcoming, I'd take the Elantra because of the longer warranty, tech, etc.
It is a $30,000 Nissan Sentra with a CVT and 149 Horsepower. I don't think it's even possible to rip off people more than this. Like, do we need to know more? They could put out 10 iterations of that CVT and I would never trust them again either. Anything with a JATCO component in it is a blacklisted car for me.
The sentra, and for that matter Nissan is thecentry point for Japanese brands. Especially since they purchased Mitsubishi. Its okay. They have a place in the market. I have a 2022 pathfinder. It's fine. I know what I got for the price. Perspective please folks. It does what it is supposed to do. Forget the rims. Prop rod? Who cares. The pathfinder has one also. Pay it off in 4 years and keep driving. I'm glad nissan is around. Everybody doesn't have 50-60 grand for a vehicle.
There is really nothing wrong with Nissan, down the road I may consider it with the way prices are going. I currently have a Toyota which I enjoy but I do have a soft spot for Nissan and also my father has the 2024 Sentra model
While you complain about the lack lf turbo. We applaud it. The sentra is not a sports car, and the more complicated the engine is, the less reliable it is.
would just be an option, you don't have to get it if you don't want to. The previous generation Sentra had a Turbo model, so another one would make sense.
@TheActs2021 it doesn't make sense to have a turbo, the turbo is largely why the CVT grenades so consistently. The R&D department can stay focused on improving without the turbo. 😊
@kimblem.w9952 it's silly to waste money on such a car when their sentra line is quite successful as is. The Civic Si doesn't sell much as is, and it's known as one of the if not the best sporty yet practical cars on the market
You always talk negatively about a prop rod, but I can tell you that as a former technician, I'll take a prop rod over hood struts all day long. A prop rod has never failed on me and caused the hood to hit me on the head.

Nissan has hit the nail on the head for us that prefer looks, affordability, simplicity of no turbo chargers (less chance of "check engine" lights) and wonderful mpg. If you want all of that, look at the Altima and be ready to pay and maintain much more.
One of the main reasons I bought the 2024 Sentra SR Premium last month. It came more equipped than my 2016 Altima SR. The main reason I got the Sentra was because it's very affordable, and it was an upgrade for me. Personally, it's a mini Altima.
@@marvin7533 Agree Marvin. I don't need fancy. Let the people that want options, maintenance and performance pay for it. Some of us just want simplicity and affordability.
I rented the SV version for a week-long business trip recently and I am very very impressed by this car. Unlike the other brands, the exterior design looks very modern yet not overly edgy. I might just buy one as my commute/airport car. Having rented Corolla and Elantra frequently as well, this is is my choice (never seen a Civic for rental). The only weakness is the infotainment display is a tad small and is mounted straight and not tilted/biased towards the driver. Looking at that screen for navigation is not a good experience and it has quite a bit of glare. Everything else is great.
We had an Altima in the past which we loved but this was a more affordable second car. Great ride and awesome gas mileage in these days of high priced gas! We don’t even have a 1000 miles on it yet and getting 30-35 mpg mostly around town driving. Highly recommend!
As a Toyota Lexus lover, I’ve always liked the look of the Sentra, especially the SR trim. I just couldn’t stand their past CVT transmissions and the engine is so underpowered. I miss the spec V trim.
Same. Honestly, it’s probably a better quality interior than the Corolla and I really liked it, but in the end I made the same calculation you did and went with a Corolla. Not to mention, resale value is much better on the Corolla.
@@rickm8456 This isn't a car category for people to gamble with their money. Nissan reliability with those CVTs is a non-starter as nice as they may look. You buy compacts to be cost efficient, an unreliable car is not cost efficient.

The auto stop start in my Sentra is seamless and feels like it's from the future compared to the Toyotas. I can't even tell when the engine shuts off half the time. I'm getting 42mpg hand calculated with a 24 mile commute each way traveling rural roads and 10 miles of highway each direction. The ride is smoother than our other vehicles (it has the 16 inch alloys so that helps) and quieter too. My only issue is tire noise from the rear at 70mph, as quiet as the rest of the car is the noise from the rear is a bit annoying. I ordered sound deadening material to line the trunk area with and that should fix it. So far I love the car, no issues with Bluetooth or Apple Car Play, stereo sounds good, touchscreen is responsive and easy to use. I'd like the better headlights from the SR but even marked down the SR is a couple grand more and I'm too old for the boy racer look. Meh, it's a Sentra, it's fine.

What do you mean? The current generation of the Pathfinder came out in 2022. As for the Murano that probably won’t be till fall and the Armada next year.
I have this exact color SR. The car wakes up with a 2.5" exhaust on it lol They got this thing so constricted that when you rev all the back pressure keeps the revs high, such than when you let off it's still climbing or sustaining for a couple second. The SR should have at least come with straight through 2 1/4 piping but it's more like 2", or maybe even 1.8 off the cat pipe even. Whatever it takes to boost MPG I guess. Overall I'm impressed with the CVT this time around. Major difference versus the 2022 I rented. I'm convinced that Nissan now has one of the best CVTs now. If not the best. It's made me hopeful about CVT tech for the first time. My 2015's CVT was a POS. My parent's 2017 (?) Rogue CVT also a POS that left them broke down with less than 40K. For my 2015, CVT issues began at 16.8K, so I guess too early to tell from a reliability standpoint just yet, as I only have 8K on the car. Performance wise? It's so much better now. No more leaving the stop sign/ light and going Baaa Wiiiiiiiiiiinnnnggg Brrrrrrrrrrrr...they used to love to jump around between insanely high RPM and going nowhere, down to overdrive and bogging.
@@labradachig1976 lol it's about to be mine. I'm moving down from a Nissan frontier to the Sentra SR but I need to be convinced. I want the Kia forte GT a lot more.
Great review as always. I've always liked the looks of the Altima, and Nissan seems to have captured it perfectly in the Sentra. The fact that they upgraded the CVT with 'fake' shifts is, IMHO, a great feature, one I wish Honda would adopt (yep, Honda fan here), 7.6 seconds is surprising with 149 hp toting just over 3,000 lbs, but yeah, give up the 1.5 ltr 3 cylinder turbo with 200 hp to perhaps drop it into the high 6 seconds(?). Overall, this seems to be a very well put together ca with lots of features and economy for the money.
I just bought the Nissan Sentra SR fully loaded with premium package, about two weeks ago...in exactly this color!😊....I love all the bells and whistles included in the premium package, and feel it's more than worth the $29 thousand price. I dont care if it takes over 8 seconds to get to 60mph...in my trade in Kia Soul 2016, I could take a quick nap between 0 to 60mph....😂🙄 (plus the kia fell apart rather quickly 😮) MPG is fantastic so far...🎉
CVT work great as long as you drive normal. It will.not stand up to drag racing, towing heavy stuff or playing games like burnouts and crap. I had zero problems with my 2015. Unfortunately I got rear ended and they totaled out my car. Looking at this car or the Versa SR.
I have driven most of the competitors in this class and this car is my favorite. Plenty quick enough for real life. If I wanted 400 horsepower I would pony up $50k or more and have a Mustang GT. I don't need that, though.
Some CVT's may be bad at some point like the Rogue and the Pathfinder, the Sentra has a good combination with the carplay and 149 Horsepower. Also the Nissan Titan needs a redesign.

I like that there are options out there without turbo or hybrid. I would rather see production cost go down and easier for the home mechanic to work on.
I am not liking this black roof trend. Toyota is into it, I’ve even seen some Teslas with the pillars blackout. It’s like the return of the vinyl top. Great review as always!
Brake torqued acceleration with a CVT is no bueno... going to overheat that CVT unless Nissan has fitted a bigger transmission cooler to the Sentra. 😮 Still prefer the Mazda 3 with a torque converter automatic transmission.... and almost 50 more horsepower
Agreed. I have the previous generation SR, unfortunately it has 25 HP less, but it was also like 8K less than this one... and my MPG is better than what this new one has
I give credit to Nissan for definitely giving us a stylish sedan that is definitely more premium than the previous generations. I’d still take the current Civic because I actually like the interior better and I actually prefer the Civic’s 2.0L engine with 158 HP.

Does this car have a spare tire or a kit? I didn't hear that mentioned in your video. I looked at a Toyota Corolla LE and the inside of the car was very plain, and it was also a little noisy at higher speeds. Honda Civics usually get the best reviews, but they're also more expensive.
@@davidjymit feels a little cheap considering the price, along with this the 2018 model of the Sentra even the base, has LED taillights its very ironic considering how they got rid of them for the remodel but it’s very very lazy.
@@davidjymthe Corolla, Mazda 3, Civic, and Impreza have LED head lights and taillights on every trim now, so Nissan has no excuses to not include them on every trim.
A pretty obvious no. There hasn't been one in many generations, also Sentra's aren't selling as well as they used to a long time ago, so no way to justify a radically upgraded sport trim.
Don’t be fooled. The Xtronic CVT is the new badging for their troublesome Jatco CVT transmission. Nissan XTRONIC CVT problems have caused a class action lawsuit that alleges the continuously variable transmissions are defective. The lawsuit alleges the XTRONIC transmissions shake, jerk, have acceleration and deceleration problems, make noise and suffer complete failures.
@@JDMSwervo2001 Are Nissan CVT transmissions good or bad? While the concept of CVTs are good, in practice they were often plagued with issues. This is particularly true for Nissan, which employs CVT gearboxes across its lineup. These transmissions run into countless issues and are so poorly designed that a class action lawsuit was filed against Nissan.
It depends. My wife's 2011 Rogue had it's CVT replaced twice before 50k miles. My old 2014 Accord (4 cyl) ran for 150k miles with no CVT issues. It's probably still going strong. I sold it 6 months ago.
From someone who has access to both Corolla and Sentra, the Sentra seats are more comfortable compared to Corolla, the only thing Corolla has the advantage over the Sentra is the adaptive cruise control
My 2016 Nissan Altima SR with 133,000 miles is still running like new. Never had CVT issues. Keep up with the maintenance, and you'll never have issues.
If their cvt was more reliant to reaching 200k miles i feel like id love this vehicle. It always feels like its a ticking time bomb, will my tranmission last till 100k? Also wtf is with the non led turn signals? It cant be that fkn expensive jesus

Looks great but so very lazy of them to just copy the design of the Altima each year, I miss when the Sentra used to get its own things and own styles like the Nismo edition of the 2018 and 2019 models along with this I find it crazy that they’re almost regressing as they’re cutting LED pieces like the taillights which were also on the 18, and 19 models I just hope they can either do something new next year since the Altima is leaving as well, or stop price gouging for features other companies offer standard.

Comments: CVT CVT CVT
CVT work great as long as you drive normal. It will.not stand up to drag racing, towing heavy stuff or playing games like burnouts and crap. I had zero problems with my 2015. Unfortunately I got rear ended and they totaled out my car. Looking at this car or the Versa SR.
@@ronhall5395 yeah I'm still driving a 2013 sentra and never had any issues with the CVT

I saw this exact car at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show. And I sat in it. I kinda liked it. It was weight next to a 2024 Nissan Altima SR in a really nice metallic blue, the Altima also had AWD decals on it to advertise its all wheel drive system.
I like that there are options out there without turbo or hybrid. I would rather see production cost go down and easier for the home mechanic to work on.
I really like the color & I will buy this car soon.
Id blindly take this over the corolla all day long. But not over a civic or k4 Elantra or mazda3 which are the best executed vehicles in the class
Stupid . Corolla will outlive this 4 times

I love my Nissan Sentra. It is affordable and has a sporty look.
Altima and Sentra are beautiful
Best color option on sentra, orange/black !!
Brake torqued acceleration with a CVT is no bueno... going to overheat that CVT unless Nissan has fitted a bigger transmission cooler to the Sentra. 😮 Still prefer the Mazda 3 with a torque converter automatic transmission.... and almost 50 more horsepower
Needs way more power for that price. If they put the Rogue's turbo engine into this, it would be a lot more interesting.
Agreed. I have the previous generation SR, unfortunately it has 25 HP less, but it was also like 8K less than this one... and my MPG is better than what this new one has

Does this car have a spare tire or a kit? I didn't hear that mentioned in your video. I looked at a Toyota Corolla LE and the inside of the car was very plain, and it was also a little noisy at higher speeds. Honda Civics usually get the best reviews, but they're also more expensive.

A pretty obvious no. There hasn't been one in many generations, also Sentra's aren't selling as well as they used to a long time ago, so no way to justify a radically upgraded sport trim.

Would it go faster with he smaller rim option?
Don’t be fooled. The Xtronic CVT is the new badging for their troublesome Jatco CVT transmission. Nissan XTRONIC CVT problems have caused a class action lawsuit that alleges the continuously variable transmissions are defective.
The lawsuit alleges the XTRONIC transmissions shake, jerk, have acceleration and deceleration problems, make noise and suffer complete failures.
Does this apply to Nissans Sentra/Altima/Rogue made after 2020?
@@JDMSwervo2001
Are Nissan CVT transmissions good or bad?
While the concept of CVTs are good, in practice they were often plagued with issues. This is particularly true for Nissan, which employs CVT gearboxes across its lineup. These transmissions run into countless issues and are so poorly designed that a class action lawsuit was filed against Nissan.
It depends. My wife's 2011 Rogue had it's CVT replaced twice before 50k miles. My old 2014 Accord (4 cyl) ran for 150k miles with no CVT issues. It's probably still going strong. I sold it 6 months ago.
If you knew what you're talking about you'd know these new CVT are not like the old ones
You're obviously talking about 2013-2019.
That car here, Puerto Rico, is around $35K!! Holy!!😮😮.
The Mazda 3 is definitely the best in the class but this is a good option over a Corolla for sure.
From someone who has access to both Corolla and Sentra, the Sentra seats are more comfortable compared to Corolla, the only thing Corolla has the advantage over the Sentra is the adaptive cruise control
Would you you guys pick the 2024 SE Camry or this?
Nope
20 years of junk transmissions has ruined Nissan's reputation. I'm surprised that they are still in business.
I had no problems with my so cap 167k miles 2009 Altima still running
My 2016 Nissan Altima SR with 133,000 miles is still running like new. Never had CVT issues. Keep up with the maintenance, and you'll never have issues.
Don’t think these guys read about the lawsuit and settlements . Nissan knew the CVT’s sold were prone to premature failures.
If their cvt was more reliant to reaching 200k miles i feel like id love this vehicle. It always feels like its a ticking time bomb, will my tranmission last till 100k?
Also wtf is with the non led turn signals? It cant be that fkn expensive jesus
I remember when the Sentra used to have Civic SI version called Sentra SE-R Spec V
I wish they’d bring the manual transmission to the United States. Canada gets a manual version 😢
It’s a nice car but why do they cheap out so much with the lights?
It should come with a Uber sticker from the factory

Yes
If it’s not the best at anything then they have to beat the competition on price
It does and there are discounts
My neighbor and brother in law had their Nissan’s CVT quite at 100k miles. Nissan has to fix their CVTs
Nissan has. Anything built in that 2020’s should have the improved CVT.
My wife's 2011 Rogue went through two transmission replacements before hitting 50k miles. We got rid a bit later after the warranty ran out.

Hey I’ve been watching your reviews for a while and I got the itch to give this car review thing a try! If you could do me a solid and give me a list of all the equipment you use
All manufactures of sedans need to think Sportback. The rear deck lid needs to henge at the top of the rear glass. In this segment compete with the Buick Envista and Chevy Trax.
😒🤡What is with you always throwing extra Hate at Nissan vehicles...they've been on fire since the 2010 and even more since 2019. I dont need a damn Hybrid or Turbos that would make it less reliable and more headaches on maintenance 🤨
Baby Altima? So, the transmission is going to grenade itself at 40k instead of 80k?
My 19 altima has over 210k miles and 0 cvt issues .
I'd trade that Bose speaker system for a power folding side mirror.
Put in a real automatic transmission and not a useless CVT and the Sentra may be a winner. Better yet a 6spd!
I just bought a 2022 Altima, and this is literally a mini version. It has the same steering wheel, instrument cluster, touch screen, exterior lights, and other details. I love my Altima, but for a compact I would have to look elsewhere.

I will keep my 2021 Kia forte with almost identical features paid a fraction of what they are asking for this
Looks great but so very lazy of them to just copy the design of the Altima each year, I miss when the Sentra used to get its own things and own styles like the Nismo edition of the 2018 and 2019 models along with this I find it crazy that they’re almost regressing as they’re cutting LED pieces like the taillights which were also on the 18, and 19 models I just hope they can either do something new next year since the Altima is leaving as well, or stop price gouging for features other companies offer standard. I unlike others actually like the CVT I don’t prefer it over anything else but it’s not bad at all but I’m just staying optimistic!

The 2022 has several red arrows going down, then the 21, but the 22 had no issues with transmission, but the 21 had two red arrows going down for the transmission. It is strange to me that one year would have more green arrows than another year, considering there were no changes to the car.
