    Thanks Doc! This really helped understand some things to make my HR perform better and why some rigs were not sustaining as they should. Your videos are so helpful and I appreciate you time with this board! You are the man on the HR!

    Man these videos are fantastic! The Headrush is a very sensitive piece of equipment and I think a lot of bad reviews are players that aren’t spending enough time with it to learn how to get your gains set properly. I have some pretty hot pickups in my guitar and have to back the gains off a good bit to keep from having noise interference. Great vids bud keep up the great work!

    Thanks for all of your videos. I was having issues with all of the Pedalboard rigs sounding distorted. Everything felt like it was to 11. Watched this video, and it led me to the output level. It seems as if Headrush, and a lot of other rig creators, get that output pegged to the red. I just spent the last few hours going through every patch turning down the rig level getting the levels down into the green. Not sure why everything was maxxxxxed out like that, but now all of the patches sound great.
    I do use a guitar with a mid-boost circuit, so that hottens things up for sure, but even my teles and Les Pauls were pegging that level to red. I adjusted every rig to my hottest guitar, just below any yellow, then every guitar will respond how they should based on their individual pickup output.
    Thanks again!!

    Thanks for your videos. I use gigboard into amp return .
    I'm aware of these setup tips addressed here.
    (1)I had hoped in hybrid mode I would get a good loud solo boost by activating a boost pedal.
    The white boost is minimal, jc-do (tube screamer) slightly more but not enough of a volume jump.
    (2)Playing through a setlist just now I found two rigs ( of ten I'd made) Lower in volume I'd like to bring them up and tried by adjusting amp master volume, but maxed and still not at same levels as other rigs.
    Thanks for any suggestions, Dr!

      The White Boost works great when placed after the amp. You can adjust rig volume in the Output section, IR Level or Cab out level.

    I'm currently coming out of the 1/4" output of Headrush to the front input of my Marshall DSL100H and 2 - 4x12 cabs. I use the Headrush for my amps, cabs and IR's so my Marshall head is basically just being used as an amp and running through the clean channel. Since I'm using the headrush for all effects including distortion would you recommend using the effects loop in/out on the back of the amp or is the front input the better choice? I value your knowledge and your headrush videos have been a tremendous help to me. I've learned more from you than the actual videos Headrush puts out themselves because you also integrate the importance of output and staying below the "yellow". I'm gonna send an email to Headrush so maybe they'll contact you and work out a deal to put links on their website to your tutorials. Thanks Doc!

  • @ddmilne1
    @ddmilne1 6 років тому

    I get that, and I will be sure to keep output levels down. But the Distortion effect are really high ended and harsh. I know with the Helix I.e High and Low cuts are often applied to minimize low end muddling and high end fizz.But what magic does everyone do to get really good overdrive distortion tones that will carry into the front show when the unit is coupled to theP>A. I understand the clipping issue and that for sure is one source, I am sitting with powered monitor and the base amp tines are good but the distortion raspy

    Great video Doc- I've watched it several times and learn something new each time about my HR pedalboard. I always set my rig volume so that it is below the zero mark as per your instructions - I presume this is really the overall rig gain?? After this I try to adjust the volume level of all my rigs so that they are roughly the same output level so we dont get a volume shock when playing a new song. It seems that the only way I can do this is to reduce the rig volume on those rigs that are naturally louder, which then appears to squash the tone of those rigs! Are there some other In/Out parameters that I should be taking note of?
    I am playing a Fender Strat and I am only using clean and ambient sounds so am not concerned about trying to balance rigs with overdrive/metal type sounds. My HR is going straight into the mixer.

  • @ddmilne1
    @ddmilne1 6 років тому +2

    My experience with Headrush and Helix is that they will not play nice with any tube amp , I have both of these units at home trying to make then usable as a live rig and while some amp models by themselves without distortion pedal models ahead of the amps come out not too bad ( in the case of the headrush only), through the effects return of an amp and through the P.A. But the moment any distortion is added the distortion pedals the chain thin out the tone and come out either muddy or so harsh as to not be usable> If anyone has a fix for this I am all ears because up to that point I was sold on buying the Headrush. Now I am back to neither one being an option. Hears hoping there is an answer.

    • @DoctorMcFarlandStudios
      @DoctorMcFarlandStudios  6 років тому +1

      Easy answer David. First of all, the output level of your rigs MUST be in the green. If there is a little yellow then it is getting too close to clipping and that is not good. This is basic gain staging just like you would use when recording into a computer. I honestly got horrible sounds out of the box when plugging the Headrush into my mixing board. I also had the Master knob on the HR up way too high and it was clipping the inputs of the Mixer. Now moving on to amps. Every amp will respond differently when using the FX Return. I had one amp where only the Master Volume worked but everything else was bypassed and my other amp all the knobs are bypassed and I have to use the Master knob on the HR to control the overall volume. You hook this up by simply taking the 1/4 inch output the HR and plug it into the FX Return on the amp. At this point you will want to go to Global Settings and change your Output source to be CAB or IR input depending on which one you are using. Also have your CAB or IR last in your chain. You can find info on how to do this in this video. ua-cam.com/video/lKGnAWUYc9U/v-deo.html Since you are using a real amp and its speaker you don't need an additional speaker in the Digital realm. You can try it both ways and just pick the one that sounds best to you. Any overdrive or Distortion you have in the chain should sound just as good and the real thing. I have another video series called Headrush vs Reality where I compare analog pedals to the fx inside the Headrush. The fx in the HR sounds practically identical to its analog counterparts. You can find those videos here. ua-cam.com/video/qF5NVfkoYgU/v-deo.html

    Hey Doc love your videos! I've used your output level advice since day 1 with my HR, but what's not clear to me is if there is a maximum that your INPUT level should be set at. Should the green not be touching the 0 at the end of the level meter?

    • @DoctorMcFarlandStudios
      @DoctorMcFarlandStudios  5 років тому

      Alex Mansman I don’t mess with the INPUT level since my pickups are not very hot. I just make sure the OUTPUT is sitting 3 bars below zero to make room for any boost pedals.

    Thank you for this video. Can you answer this?
    Does the Headrush looping feature allow to connect to PC, upload a siren or random noise, then trigger it in a live setting...and is there a stereo output for running loops to the PA or separate amp? My goal is to use the Headrush for all guitar needs through the Line6, AND play certain sound effects like, the flapping of Raven wings through something else.

    Anyone ever run into an issue where you're only getting one side/channel going out to your set of speakers? Have two 2x12 cabs powered by an amp head but only one cab/channel is working. Using a stereo rig. Even tried a stereo splitter cable. Global settings for stereo FX are on. Tested cabs without pedalboard- both work fine. It's like a left/right fader is panned to one side... ?

      Gil Marriner if you are making new rigs then they don’t necessarily keep the same settings as your older rigs. I need to work on this myself. My patches stay consistent for the most part but sometimes the input settings will change if I don’t catch it.

    • @DoctorMcFarlandStudios
      @DoctorMcFarlandStudios  Рік тому +1

      No you don't have to go that far but if you create a rig and you notice that different guitars push the gain of the amp a little too much then you can bring down the input and save that as a preset for the next time you use that guitar. It could be as simple as the difference between a humbucker and a single coil.

    Is it possible to turn on and off specific pedals in your chain while being in a scene block without actually tapping the screen. ie, in a live situation with the gigboard? I am using all 4 scenes currently.

    • @DoctorMcFarlandStudios
      @DoctorMcFarlandStudios  5 років тому

      Not really.. You would need the added switches that the Pedalboard provides. I have a video called Ultimate Rig Setlist (or something like that). You can create different rigs and set them up where you see 4 rigs at a time. Then you can bank up and down to few the next 4 rigs. This way you can access all the tones you need with all the different variations you need. Its a matter of workflow. ua-cam.com/video/-D0l51CA7Jo/v-deo.html

    Might sound a silly question but I have my headrush plugged to 2 monitors and it sounds perfect. When I plug the board to a computer as a sound card to record in garageband (input and output are configured as headrush), I hear nicely the sound before and during the recordings. But the recorded sound is lower than what i hear when recording or playing (the track volume is set on max). Is there a sound option to change? (Increasing the record signal, not What it heard When playing)

    Do you recommend running this pedalboard through the front of the amp or through the amps effects loop?

    • @DoctorMcFarlandStudios
      @DoctorMcFarlandStudios  5 років тому +1

      It can work great either way. I don't prefer the 4cm with the Headrush because for some reason adding an FX Loop block to chain kills the trails feature and doesn't allow the delay and reverb to spillover. For this reason I would use the FX return of the amp if the amp has an fx loop.

    • @DoctorMcFarlandStudios
      @DoctorMcFarlandStudios  5 років тому +2

      @@drexel11041 There are sooooo many great options. Some would say the Headrush is lacking in effects compared to the Helix but in reality there is more than enough to get all kinds of great sounds. You can use the White Boost (RC Booster) before or after the amp to either get more gain or get more volume. The Graphic EQ can provide +6db of boost while also adjusting the overall tone if thats what you want. The Mesa Treadplate Modern (dual rec), Bogner, Soldano SLO100 or any of the Marshall amps. A dirty amp and a tube screamer can go a long way.
