- In this video, I will show you how to set up the HeadRush Pedalboard FX Loop with your Amp. Why would you want to do this? Well, why not? While the HeadRush has an amazing assortment of amps, cabs, and effects, using your amp via the FX Loop can introduce yet another opportunity for sonic creativity. In this demo, I used this setup to gain access to my amp's spring reverb! Hope you enjoy the video. Please share your feedback with us in the Comments section.

It was great to come back to the HeadRush after all this time. I hope you enjoy this video. Next week we'll cover using the FX Loop with your favorite pedals.
Did you have any work around to still get the lopper back into the chain using this External Power amp only connection method ??? As William Wyatt Music mentioned, you lose the looper woith this Send and Rturn only method, as the signal chain is then lost in the atmosphere. OF course, you could go back to the 4 cable method, but then you'd be back to being stuck using the external amps pre-amp section, which is exactly what I am trying to avoid. But I don't see any way around it in order to be able to use the Looper in the "Post" location. Any ideas ??
Great. Is it in and out, of just out of the Beat Buddy then into the MX5 ? Thanks again for all your help and great Videos. 😎
Due to the continued functional success and resourcefulness of the HR pedalboard, these video sessions are timeless and forever relevant. The channel and its quality production output, TRULY ROCKS…pun intended😇🤨😎👍🏾👌🏾👌🏾👍🏾
Thank you VERY Much!
I’m an analog guy, but I’m thinking about one of these for FX in the FX loop. I would use it just like this. So I keep my analog hand wired tube goodness, but can add whatever into the FX loop. One unit that does all the modulation. Most stomp boxes are DSP anyway in a box that looks analog. So if they’re basically digital anyway, get them all in one unit. Yeah you’ll be upgrading every so many years, kind of like the POD remember when that was the shizzle? But you’ll be bored and want something new by then anyway. I won’t give up my analog goodness, I’ll always choose a mic on an amp. But, what a powerful tool, to add to your analog rig.
Cool. Let me know if you go forward with it.
I really liked that !! I bought my HRPB from you last winter and frankly, I've not even scratched the surface of its capabilities, much less hooked it up any of my amps ... lol I'm going to get with it now though .. thanks, brother !
Glad to help!
Great video. Thanks for posting. Just got a headrush MX5 and before I saw your vid I had it connected right but it didn't work. I Didn't realize I had to add the fx loop into the chain. Thanks!
Thanks
Yeah I was trying a 4 cable method with that pedal board and was thinking what was I doing wrong till I seen about the effects loop.
Why do you need the fx loop pedal in there? Mine works without that. Guitar in headrush, then headrush into fx return of amp. Am I midsing something?
@@ginoXcaron you could do that and by pass the preamp of the amp I do that with my bass amp my guitar amp I use the 4 cable method I really like the blackstar amp I may even just go pedals with my guitar amp instead of the mx5 still undecided but for now it’s all at home I don’t gig so it does what I need.
@@canadianguitar-garrettont7368 ueah, I watched a video. So you can basically bring your physical preamp in the loop of your headrush, put it in the chain nd then it's sent back to your cab. So, the fx loop on your pedal is just the preamp of your physical amp. so I can use my built-in felay and reverb from my amp that I like better than what's in the headrush. Awesome. And, like you mentionned, i can turn it off and usr whatever ekse amp I want instead.
Thank u for showing this
You bet
I just got my Headrush pedalboard yesterday & found this video. Connected it to my Blackstar HT-5 via the effects loop as you suggested & it sounds AMAZING. Awesome, helpful video. Subbed.
Glad to help
Really? Cuz I got nothin?
@@2hi2dye I wonder if an update changed something cause the FX loop module cuts my signal to nothing. To run through the fx return, I’ve had to use a digital amp head.
I use the same amp, but use the line in 1/4" jack. I'm only using the power amp section of the amp and no knows work.
A better more simple way to do it which will allow a lot more versatility is to just run the Headrush output to the power in section of the loop on the amp. Disable any IR's used in the RIG you setup so the amps speaker is being used.
Thanks for your feedback
Thank you for this! I’d been looking for ways to make my Gigboard work with my JCM-900 and almost settled on the 4 cable method before running into your video. Boy what a difference! I went straight into the power amp section through the effects loop and actually used a JCM800 modeled head as a preamp and it was simply amazing!!! Super quiet operation and the ‘kill switch’ option is quite useful. Truly impressed with the tones I got! Thanks again!
Glad to hear it helped. Have a great one and be sure to subscribe for future HR vids!
When you do it that way, do you run the guitar in the amp input, or in the headrush input?
@@the_FD run the guitar through the Headrush input and into the power amp section (return). Sounds amazing!
Very instructive video, thanks a lot mate !
Quick question, but If you plug the headrush gigboard directly in the Power Amp of your guitar amp and you don't use a simulated amp on your headrush rig, you are not using any preamp ?
Also, if you're not using both the FX send and return of your guitar amp, what is the purpose of using a Fx Loop block on the headrush ? Couldn't you just connect the output of the headrush towards the power amp of your guitar amp with the same result ?
How about instructions on how to make a set list to change from clean to heavy on the footswitches?
Thanks for the suggestion. I believe I did a video on how to create a setlist. It would basically be the same process.
that's a good video. I've been considering getting a HR pedalboard and use it with my amp cause I love its celan app and I just want to use it instead of pedals. It would have been good to see a comparison between the sound of the guitar straight to into the amp and maybe with a pedal or two and then with the HR to see if something is lost.
Mig-El Romed thanks for the feedback. I’m looking into doing a follow up video to cover that as well.
I know this is an old video but could you essentially plug in a tonex pedal into this as a way of expanding amp tones? And just use the pedalboard for purely effects?
Yes with the send/return
My new headrush is on its way to me and my amp is a new fender deluxe reverb doesn’t have a send and return outlets did not know how to run it through till now have to go to global settings to do thanks can’t wait.lol
Have fun!
Thank you for this information. I would really like to understand a way to make it work so my amp doesn't cancel out the EQ (BMT) (GM Deluxe 40) while using the pedal board.
Thanks for watching. Just go through the front of the amp. Then you can use the amp EQ. Keep in mind that you'll want to turn off the amp/cab on the HeadRush to get a good sound.
Hi Scott. Unless I'm doing something wrong, I think there is an important step you missed in this video. Using the FX loop module it seems as though I have no volume control on the HR at all. The only way I was able to get volume control was to add a volume pedal and assign the effects send to it.
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll double check when possible
@@ThePedalGuy You bet! I found it easier to just use the HR amp out to the AMP send. That way I could use the amp volume and EQ plus the HR master. I can also switch to a different patch that doesn't have an FX loop block in the chain. Of course, you can't use any outboard FX.
Thanks for the videos they have helped. I got the HR about 3 weeks ago but I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep it. Great for practice and some recording, but live? Meh. I'm old school and the digital sound while much improved over the decads still lacks that analog squishiness :)
I have A/B the board.. Both had a amp and cab engaged on the HR board. A into the front my Marshall tube amp with a 2x12 cab and B thru Headrush 12" cab... the difference is astonishing,,, the Headrush cab is sooooo muddy compared my tube amp ands sounds terrible,
Thanks for sharing.
That's my experience too, so I just run the Headrush pedal board into the front on my 5150 and use everything in the pedal just like pre amps and analog pedals and it's sounds just like my Vintage analog pedals and it's awesome !
@@ThePedalGuy my pleasure man.. Since then I bought two qsc 10" speakers and the sound is 1000 times better
My guy, great video. I'm considering the Headrush but I have a question. Does it work nicely as a USB audio interface??? I've been told by a friend that it has latency issues, but would like to know from you what you think???
Great tones man. Great videos. Very helpful
Yes it does
If you're using the 4-cable method should the FX Loop pedal be after the distortion pedals and before the modulation effects or does it matter.
This is a good question, and it reflects the logic I was trained by, but I think it just boils down to listening to it in different positions and deciding yourself if one spot sounds better. Does anybody else have a better opinion? I do not own a Headrush yet, but am trying to justify buying yet another pedalboard after selling my old Digitech 2120 Artist with Control One MIDI Footswitch array (from 1999).
@@markdouglas8073 Thanks Mark. Love my Marshall DSL and love my headrush. Striving for the perfect match!
Question I did exact the same! But I use a laney tube Amp but the gain is not really there??
I love my amps too, so I run my headrush pedal board into my jcm600 head and into my orange 120 head but I'm not getting stereo sound with with left and right outs in to the front end of the amps. I have not tried the 4cm yet.
I started out with a gig board a couple years back. I sold it to pick up a fractal Fm3. Now I've also decided to grab another tube amp(Mesa trip crown) and of course want too be able to have multi effects for that rig. I was going to use the Fm3 for effects on the tube amp but decided best to get something else. I went with the mx 5 headrush to effect up my tube Amps. Now my question is: (difficult of course) In the real world of tube Amps I would not put certain effects post amp meaning after..... I. E. - crybaby, anything that effects the tone, boosts, eq's, dist, gain, etc that I would set up as pre. But for post I would do time effects such as delay, reverb, etc.....
Will the headrush allow for this to happen or because its digital just set up best you can and hope for the best? I've always used effect loops for multi effects. I do not like just running it like a basic pedal straight into the input of the guitar. Hopefully I explained this correctly and you understand where I'm going with this. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you
Great MX5 info from you. Thanks.
Question, Can I connect a Beat Buddy drum machine to the MX5 effects loop?
Yes
Could you please explain the correct way to connect the Beat Buddy to the effects loop of the MX5. Thanks again. You love Pedals and so do I. 😎

Could you help me with setting up headrush mx5 with an amp ?
Thanks
Thanks. It's exactly the same way I show it in this video.
Hey! What's the difference between using the HR Output vs Send? I tried the HR Output to amp Return and it sounded fine. Thanks for the great content :)
Hi,
Well, it's simply a matter of taste. Using an amp the way I'm showing you here enables you to integrate analog with digital. In this demo, I love the sound of the my spring reverb amp, so I'm showing how it's possible to set that up. Thanks for watching and thank you for the question.
If you’re plugging into the FX loop return aren’t you bypassing your amp’s preamp? If so wouldn’t you want to use one of the modeled amps in your rig without the Cab ( and IR) so the Headrush provides a modeled preamp?
@@dansegal1254 yeah, you are right.
It's reverb in the amp is by passed.
@@auntjenifer7774 not always. I have a Fender Blues Deluxe and if you plug into the effects return it does bypass the preamp but it does NOT bypass the reverb. The effects return must be between the preamp and the reverb in the circuit. My H&K works exactly like you describe though. So it must just be a Fender thing.

Have a blackstar club 40 and a mx5 but I want that preamp of the amp what is my best solution so I can just utilize the mx5 for pedals like delay chorus flanger or a booster od?
Use the FX loop of your blackstar amp and build a rig in the mx5 without the amp or cab. That should do it

Please can you show us with amp and headrush .. I am new with multi effect so I am not getting sound as I expected.. 🙏
Hi and greets from germany. I`ve got two questions regarding the 4 Cable Method. Do you always set the position of the switch (RACK/STOMP) to "RACK" and how did you set your MASTER volume level? In one post someone recommended to set the main level always to max, while using the 4 cable method. Thx in advance. :-)
Hello, is this setup suitable for a rehearsal room? Did you not connect anything to the output of the pedal board? What happens if we put the fxloop in the middle of the chain, will the effects we place after it work?...
No tails when using fx loop? thanks for making these reviews
Not that I'm aware of. I'll need to double check.
I finally got it working just cant figure out how to adjust my volume
Thank you. So if I wanted to use my marshal as just a power amp and plug in the return like you did at the first part of the video could I then use the rigs and cabs that are in the headrush or would that make it sound like 2 amps. My issue is I have my Marshall and I love it but I want to use my headrush as well. I don't want to go out and buy a powered speaker unit. How can I get the best sound using this setup?
Ideally you would want to use the FX return with the HR but if you want to use the HR with your Marshall preamp, I would suggest turning off the amp in the rig you’re using it with.
Hi i have a blackstar studio 10 6l6 i plug the headrush mx5 into the fx return off the blackstar and there is no sound at all?
Hi pedal Guy.
I have bought some presets and have edit the presets with an fx loop pedal into the rig. It doesn’t sound right at all when I hit a nite on guitar it makes a very strange sound. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong ?
Without seeing the preset I couldn't tell you.
@@ThePedalGuy it’s the choptones blues vol 1-3 and Santana patch from UA-cam
Is it possible to use ( split ) the MX5 so that it can run a few blocks into the front of my real amp, and at the same time, run blocks within the effects loop of the real amp ??
Not that I'm aware of. Once you create an instance of the FX send, you will need to send some or all of the entire signal to the amp. It would be nice to have a split function though.
I wanted to know how to bring back the screen where it shows previous and next at the lower right screen? It now only shows at the top with two arrows. Also wanted to know how to be able to activate the looper recordings with the foot switches? Thanks
Hi. Have a look at the looper video in my Headrush playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLCMmbpmAa8cizBaORJkaiIVfOPKTZ-lkm.html

Nice!
@@ThePedalGuy just a question i have a marshal amp but theres an fx return and a footswitch input which one should i use
Cant you place the FX loop you're using to split the Pre and Power amps in the middle of the chain, turn off amps and cabs and use the Headrush as an FX only rig with tone shaping in front of your real preamp and modulations behind the real power amp?
Got my answer at 9:32 :D
I was wondering If running the Headrush into my amp is the best option or is getting the full range flat response(FRFR) headrush powered speaker better soundwise when using the Headrush pedalboard?
Thanks for the question. If given a choice, I would use the FRFR, as it gives you a chance to really use the amp/cab sims from the HeadRush. However, you can also use the FX return on the back of your amp too. Be sure to subscribe to the channel for more HeadRush vids.
Hello. Since I have no FX Return I had to go into the Front. Works. But tomorrow I will get another Amp with it. Which Setup would you recommend? And what is the 4 Cable Method if I use the Effects only? Somehow I do not get it. Thanks!
Hey pedal guy. How do you incorporate the headrush gigboard into your pedal board. I’m hoping you know the answer. Please let me know. Thanks or can I keep my pedal board in the front of the amp and the gigboard in the return at the same time.
Man, I'm having troubles. I followed the instructions just like in the video but sound isn't coming out. I'm using the Head MX5
With this setup could I run from the right send on the HeadRush to a second cab for a stereo rig setup? Would I have to model an amp in my HeadRush rig?
How can you make a set list between the four footswitches like clean, crunch and heavy or whatever?
If it's all based off of the same rig, it would be a better idea to create scenes for this type of use. Make sense?
holy eyebrows!
🤣
So I have a line running from left mono on the HR to the return on my amp. Fx loop is on, I got nothing, I tried plugging my guitar into both the input of the HR and the input of the amp (you skipped that part) and I have no sound. What am I missing?
Anyone have any advice for using the Headrush Pedalboard as an effects loop out of an Aura Spectrum DI Preamp (Fishman)? The Aura Spectrum has an FX loop output, which I have used with analog pedal chains with a send and return insert cable. But I can't seem to figure out how to configure it to use the effects on the Headrush Pedalboard.
Also how long is the looper recording able record at a time and can you extend individual recordings? Thanks
Not sure I understand. Are you asking how long you can record with the looper in the HR?
@@ThePedalGuy Ok the pedal has a limit of 5 minutes then it loops back, so my question is, are you able to extend past five minutes of recording since most of my songs are 10 plus minutes? I need to record the whole song so I can play along as if I were a rhythm guitarist. Thanks
Why did you use an FX loop block? I always have good results without it. Maybe I should try it
The fx loop block is used to send a specific amount of signal out of the fx send on the back of the HR.
Hi, can you please help me out? I need to know how to factory reset the headrush pedalboard help!!
Great video. It confirmed pretty much everything I’ve been trying. But I’m still having an issue. I’m trying to create a stereo setup using my Headrush into a Fender Blues Deluxe and an H&K Tubemeister 36. I set the H&K up 4CM style and then run the Fender off the other side of the effects send. It should be in stereo. Instead I get a teeny tiny like sound out of my H&K and a huge sound out of the Fender. Any advice on what I’m doing wrong?
That’s a tough one. Have you contacted Headrush about this?
@@ThePedalGuy not yet. Still exploring to see if it just user error. I did put a volume box in-line going to the Fender and turned the volume way down. I do get a great stereo sound between amps now. Ping pongs work just like expected. I’d rather fix this the right way, but this works for now. One new issue I’ve encountered though is as soon as I plug the Fender into the Headrush, I get a buzz like a ground loop. So that’s rather annoying. The Fender is plugged up across the room into another other than the Headrush and the H&K, so maybe that’s causing it. I tried the ground lift on the Headrush with no success.

but then u r using the external amp''s PreAmp arent you ?...which defeats the point of going to the Return of the Amp only, but then does bring the signal chain back to the board so you can now use the looper again...which you cant do using the Send out of the HR and Return only into the Amp as demonstrated in this Video.
@@telecaster643 You are using the external amp's pre-amp if you put an FX Loop object in your signal path and then select that object with its assigned footswitch. That's the whole point.
