This was a proper “people” car !! Soviet made. Its not fast but it reliable and cheap to fix. No stupid electronics. My grandfather had similar model. It was driven only during summer time. Leather seat with chrome stuff outside and inside the car. Also there was contact switch below steering wheel. You put the key and turn but there was no contact unless you push the button for contact. I am not sure if that was factory on not. As a kid i loved to go on vacation with them with that Lada. I remember grandpa turning on indicator and pass Bmw with overheated engine on uphill. Great memories and great soviet machine build to last and fix on side of the road in case they break down. However they are tricky to drive in winter on snow. I know some people they used 50kg bag of cement inside the trunk 🤣
My grandpa had one of those, it’s a shame that it was left to roast in the Mediterranean heat. I remember him driving me to the supermarket to buy cookies, good times… Thanks grandpa :)
When I was a kid, our neigbour has a white 2107, it was like in 1984. I remember the specific smell of the interior, the plastics, the cream-white colour and the chromes.

Known as Riva's here in the UK an ultra rare now as most of the Russian's bought them back. On those cold winter days they were always the 1st ones to start and just kept going no matter what. They were really built to last.
But they didn't.. Mechanically, I would agree. Simple, rugged and dependable. Could fix pretty much any issue with a cable tie, a Phillips screwdriver and a basic socket set. However, over here in the UK at least, first touch of some salted snow in Winter and the sills/rear arches would evaporate.... You'd never see a 3+ year old Lada that hadn't got duct tape around the front headlights.... The rustproofing was simply non-existent!
I see that the 2 2106's here have rotten sills and arches which seem to be most prone to rust. They didn't rust any worse than the likes of Xsara Picasso's. I've never seen one that hasn't got rusty sills or stone chip on them.

These things are amazing. We need small, cheap, simple cars like this to save the planet, not a plastic box full of computers. You could keep this thing on the road with spit and bailing twine. Both of them started right up after who knows how long. Great little cars.
I had 2 of these, 1 was an estate(wagon). They can be temperamental, sometimes they won't start for no reason and you would be late for work. They used to be everywhere in the UK, now very rare as they were all exported back for parts. Known as Lada in the UK.
@@jamiewood4280 i used to have the 1200 lada riva. I bought it it may 1991, with 23,677 miles on the clock. It was just under 3 years old, which was excellent value for£1,495 back then. I had a good 5 years out of it ( and a few girls in it lol)
Yeah they were, they had a thumb thick body panels and an engine that was guzzling but it was somewhat reliable if maintained properly. Would rust like hell but with an thumb thick metal panels, it would take a while before the rust would "punch" trough... When I lived back in Yugoslavia, you could see these cars everywhere. Most ordinary folks would weld a hook and most people towed bricks and cement on a trailer, not to mention small cement mixer as well, and they would build houses, little by little. My friend had an estate version, would fill it up with material and power tools + towing trailer, working around the clock. The car smelled like oil refinery inside but would take you from A to B without much fuss. After the war, these cars were dirty cheap. You could get a few years old, factory condition ones for like 1 000 $ no question asked, with leather interior as well. I heard in Russia they still made them and they still could be bought until recently. Makes sense! If parts are available and if they are cheap, wouldn't think twice about getting one. Will still outlast all these new crap of a cars that they produce today. People hated carburetor powered engines because they were lazy to clean and maintain them. Most problems were caused by poor carburetor maintenance. Fit and finish wasn't that great either, but hey, who gives a crap if gaps around panels are 5 or 7 mm wide. As long as I am not walking, carrying and as long as the rain or snow can't get inside (while being warm n fuzzy inside), it's all GOOD!
