Hi, I'm Italian and I live in Sardinia. With this video, you took me back more than 40 years.
The Fiat 850 was my father's first car, exactly the same color as yours.
I had some great memories with that car.

@@santacruzada If I remember clearly, in The Netherlands we had 850's and 600's with a Fiat badge on. But inside it would show "Seat made in Spain"

Ah, memories... In June 1966 we travelled by train to Turin and collected our new white 850 tax-free. We travelled all over Italy and France, and drove back to London. A year later we exported the car to Australia, and traded it in 1968 for a Fiat 124. Great fun vehicles!

My first car was a 1965 Fiat 850, blue, FGT 794C, my mum christened it Fidget, entirely appropriately. It was a death trap that somehow I never managed to crash. The steering column was pointed straight at your chest, aquaplaning was routine, the dash was trimmed with some Hardy Amies tweed with tomato red carpet left over from the bathroom, tyre pressures were 16 front, 26 rear which gives you some idea of the balance of the thing and I adored it. At 9:30 the location of the 3rd and 4th spark plugs gives you an idea of why an additional two universal joints in your forearm would have been useful.
This was lovely to see, thank you for posting.

When 18 in 1966 I looked for this model, but sadly bought a new BMC Mini, which was an absurdly bad built car! But some/a few years ago I have seen an elderly lady in a FIAT 850 which still looked reasonably fine, with only a few new paintings from possible rust-repairs? Denmark is the "Pure Hell" for cars, which wasn't built to be extra protected from rust, because of salted roads during winter!

I had one of these cars, way back in the 1980s. It was a fun little car, I got it for nothing, a guy traded it in for a car we had for sale, we let him off £50 against the car he bought and he was happy. I didn't drive it straight away until my Renault 10 let me down and that Fiat was the only car we had ready to drive, so I took it and enjoyed hooning around the lanes of Surrey, delightful little machine!

Exactly.. technically speaking the 850 _was_ a Fiat 600, but as this last iteration of their popular small car evolved bigger than the previous restylings, it was given a new model name and a life for itself. Both cars had the same project number: the 600 was project 100 , the 850 was project 100G.

This car was supposed to be a replacement of the Fiat 600. The idea originally was to replace the 600 with a new radical disigne of around 1000 cc. But, as usual a financial crise happened and all they did, as a quick solution was to do a 600 with a bigger engine. Of course the bigger engine needed a bigger radiator but the bigger radiator wouldn’t fit in the engine bay. To make it fit they swapped the position of the pinion. But now they had one forward gear and 3 reverse, so they had to make the engine run anti-clockwise. You couldn’t make it up, really

I owned a 1971 850 Saloon just like yours in central California from 1978 to 1983. It was my commuter, my off-roader, and my "high-school budget" course racer. I got to race Laguna Seca in 1981 on a track day. I went out with a Triumph, a MG, a Renault Caravelle, an 850 Spider, and an Austin America. We were the slowest cars on the track, but as Mr. Clarkson would say "It was BRILLIANT!!". The Spider and the Caravelle each had a Judson Supercharger on, so they always outdid us, but that little rear-engine/rear-wheel-drive 850 Saloon was scrappy as all get out. Revolting little pieces of garbage.
Rusted before they left the factory, which was shared with most FIAT'S at the time.
Not quite as bad as the 850 van/camper, they could be driven from the showroom straight to the scrap yard.
Except the scrappy wouldn't want it.

Look out for the dust from the seat cushion foam. When this old foam degrades and turns to dust, the fine power that comes off the surface is very irritating and is carcinogenic if breathed in. I have stabilised old seat foam by coating the surface with a mixture of PVA and water, allowing it to soak in, it binds the dust and stops it flying about.

    • @danielependola1580
      @danielependola1580 Рік тому +1

@@marcoceredi Ciao !!
