I'm a date a live fan too and I am blown by the popularity. I really thought it was one of those niche anime adaptations that have a small following. I honestly never thought it was that big. I know they have the visual novels and like 2 movies but I never once thought it was that popular.

idol anime fandoms outside japan are pretty tame, which is why they constantly are on the bottom of mal viewership. If Japanese fans see it, it will be a bloodbath. Card game anime is the probably easiest to talk trash on because even their own playerbase barely watches it
As someone who's involved in the DAL community it feels like the general feelings of the anime is it's alright but not amazing but we'll watch it because it's DAL(even if it skips multiple volumes worth of content). The main reason that DAL has such a big following is more to do with how good the books and games are and how content from the books and games are all tied together.
A reason people might not hear much about it is mainly how closed off the community is with absurdly giant private community groups and translation groups.

Maybe I'm just getting old and my form of actual taste just knows its bad or at least below average if anything. Its just one of those shows that I question why this anime of all things gets this many seasons but not any of the better shows that barley gets season 2?

Yeah, not sure how this is representative of the use of the word generally, but the guys from trash taste use this word for little things like the one from this clip. I'm not sure I would consider that "being cancelled"
I thought the word meant when people dump you so hard it affects your real life significantly, makes you lose your job or damages you enough so you feel forced to stay out of the internet for a while, not "lots of fans complained about me commenting about a show and I wouldn't even know that if this one guy didn't told me about it"
@@murilocelebi Since the word / phrase is so online based, and the fact that most content creators I watch (which are in drastically different circles) have used it incorrectly un-ironically, as well as there fans, I feel there’s enough evidence to suggest it’s a charged term to identify most things that are mundane in the grand scheme of things.
Cause being canceled was never a real thing. It's simply a tool reactionaries use to act like they're being oppressed. It's just thrown around at anything and everything and doesn't have meaning besides 'people angy'.

That said, I do think Kurumi is the best character in the story (haven't read the LNs), not because murder waifu but because of the actual character. Plus it's obvious her conflict is at the center of the plot, she's just as important a character as Shido imo

As someone who likes loves Date A Live, I am also surprised with the show's popularity recently. Seeing it on the 3rd spot was something most of us fans didn't expect. But alas the numbers are presented and I could only be happy about it.
Hot take: I think that the people who only watch the show for Kurumi aren't really fans of the series. They just like the character, which is honestly a shame since the plot of the series from here on out will get better and darker. But in the end, to each of their own.

agreed, as a person who has read the light novels after the second season, the story does get more better after Nia. Although it somewhat slowed down after Mukoro, it quickly got it's pace back in Ragnarok.

Looking at this video again and seeing this comment, fully agree there. That tends to be Joey's thing, he says/does a lot with "no f**ks given" and that doesn't always work.
Honestly, that mentality of his is why I don't like his content anymore. It just started coming off as being a d**k for the sake of being one after a while.
Plus, you can't really be "the anime man" but then call so much stuff as trash so quickly w/o a care in the world. A smarter person would still respect others opinions. We all know something like Boku no Pico or Abunai Sisters is widely hated, but if someone likes it, so be it.

I love Date A Live, but I totally get Joey's comment. After the 5 years between season 2 and season 3, it did feel like you sort of had to force yourself to watch it for a while, and then it took 3 more years for season 4. So 8 years for 2 seasons can be a bit discouraging unless you're a hardcore fan.

Same. I actually haven't even seen the Date a Bullet spinoff that came out in between the s3 end and s4. I nearly forgot about the series until I just randomly encountered the s4 announcement trailer in my feed. Before that, my last exposure to the series was the Spirit Pledge gacha game (which I was for some reason unable to make it work on my new phone when I got it).
I have heard good things about the new season, but as for when I'll get to watching it, that might be later this year when I have the time.
If the anime adaptation was more consistent it would've been more popular, but the reason as to why it took so long is because of animation studio problems.

DAL has silly gags that can be boring to some, but there are also interesting little understandings of insecurity and anxiety from later spirits that really humanize them!

Also if you are an anituber and trying to criticize one of the best rated series this season you are unfamiliar with. If you are smart, you only do that when there is actual backlash from the fandom. aka Boruto, Rent A Girlfriend, AOT ending.
if you think the backlash from the DAL community is bad, you haven't seen sh!t. Just trying throwing shade at bigger fandoms as an anituber without watching the series nor there being actual backlash, and you will get crucified. This is different from Garnt who ripped on mecha, because mecha was actually doing awful in the west and Guilty Crown, Zero, and Franxx were poorly received.
Here's tips:
If an anime is at some top places but not being talked about, the fandoms know/think that because of the past seasons, nobody new would want to even listen about it.
Common problems are giving opinions to an anime if you never really watched it for yourself but you only listen and hear negative rumors about it.
Storyline, Animations and characters are the reasons an anime can stay alive and you see... all of those just spiked back from s3 to s4

Seeing Date A Live being the third most viewed anime absolutely warms my heart. Been a fan of the franchise since it came out and read every single light novels including encore.
Honestly I would love the franchise to get the attention it deserves, but at the same time. I don’t want it to have uh… a toxic fan base.

It doesn't really have anything to do with a toxic fanbase. DAL fanbase is small and chill. If you want toxic, look at Naruto, MHA, Gundam, where there is an insane amount of hating on other members in the fandom. Joey just tried to throw shade at a show that he isn't even watching and is actually doing well and backlashed. If he tried that with a bigger fandom, he would get crucified harder.

While I'm a bit surprise how popular Dal SS4 get, I think the problem of Joey's tweet is more from his choice of words that make it sound more like insulting. If he tweet it like "I'm surprised that Dal is still very popular.", he wouldn't get bombarded with Dal fan as much.

Like it’d be one thing if the stans were just memeing and jokingly dunking on Joey, but a good chunk of the replies and quote retweets were people genuinely malding and throwing personal insults at him

Yea as a Date a Live fan I can actually see where Joey's coming from since there was such a MASSIVE gap in between Seasons 2 & 3 only the hardcore fans kept it going, and with the games coming out it's helping the resurgence. However I will say Date a Live is very much a show that I thought I wouldn't care about after my teens but the characters and the actual overall story surrounding the series is actually pretty good.
I agree with him that that no one is really talking about DAL, so it's a bit surprising when it is 3rd on the chart. I don't know if Joey read the novels but DAL has a very decent story. And China fans are fucking exploding because DAL was lots of people's teenage memories, also DAL season 4 was mainly funded by the Chinese company that made the DAL mobile game. That game was not getting money like fucking FGO so every one accept the quality of the anime. It was big here.
Ah, I had a feeling it (DAL s4) had to do with the game but I never knew how big it was in China lol. It is a weird feeling seeing DAL content nowadays in anime after so long, even the Kurumi movie was a shock.
I used to play the Gacha Game in Mobile, (if that's what you meant) since released. BUT GODDAMN. The amount of bugs and some other certain problems in the game was just.... Questionable.

I recommend you read the Light Novels. Since Season 3 and 4 butchered everything that is not focused on Kurumi. Poor Nia and Mana, they got the best spotlight and they ruined that part where Mana fought Ellen, and Nia being absolutely being fucked up by William so that he can take her sephira core.

I've been a DAL fan for years but I never go out of my way to promote it or try to get people to know about it.
We're the type of community that is rather quiet and let people come over instead of "inviting" them, hopefully that is understandable.
Another reason we don't usually bother being loud is that people in general, especially in the west couldn't really care less since they're always insulting the series and the fans, so we have this kind of "avoid" mentality to be honest.
Fate fans don't really bring up fate that much it's just that Fate lives rent free in a lot of people's heads because they have watched some of the anime but never got properly in to the series. This is also were the memes of it being hard to get into Fate and understand fate lore comes from. Also Fate is huge

I do not care for the anime man and haven't seen him in ages but I've seen content creators and a friend who's a content creator get attacked online for expressing their opinions about characters, shows and different issues. I was happy to see Date A Live so high. Glad the series is doing well and not ended up like Heavens Lost Property. Loved the anime and manga but hate they changed a lot and didn't really end it.

I think he gave out an unprocessed opinion because he might've only heard the bad things about s3 which was the animation, and to top it off, the last kiss Shido had with Tohka on that season. That means he probably never watched the 3rd season cause of the negative infos his close ones gave to him.

Date a Live 3 was good until they just made 1 entire volume in 1 episode, that was just ridiculous and super hasty, for me that's the biggest problem outside the animation.

Man, I couldn’t eyes my ears when I saw the video header. For me DAL was a show that a friend recommended while I was getting into anime. At first I was hesitant to watch, but then I ended up giving it a shot.
And boy did it change my life. Date A Live is simply my favorite series of all time (both anime and normie shit too). I simply love the story and was pretty fond of Tohka. I’m glad that the show is getting an ending seeing that most shows that are generally underrated never get a season 2 or 3, so this is a win for me

You certainly won't be faulted for barely remembering anything about it when they couldn't be bothered to adapt one of, if not THE longest and story rich volumes of the novels into more than one episode.

Season 3 is what killed Date a Live to the mainstream plus the blind simping of a lot of Kurumi fans. I know this because the reason I watched the series back when S3 was airing is because of Kurumi too. And after watching Season 4(after rewatching the 3 seasons), I finally gave in and read the LN and now I have the full picture(The LN is freaking amazing btw). Season 1 is good and have the best art style. It's biggest problem is having some fillers, trying to censor stuff(like Shidou not being covered in blood after Yoshino's arc), and cutting important parts(both for the plot and for the characterizations) on Kotori's arc, and it being old enough for a lot of anime watchers(or even some LN readers) to forget that the biggest plot twist of Date A Live was actually, already set up as early as very first episode itself.
Season 2 I think the best is the best one adapted. But is the season that alot forgot the most(because at least S3 is remembered as the worst one, a shame because Miku's arc is really amazing). Most probably forgot what Kurumi did there too despite being the most popular one in the 1st season.
And now we have the worst season. While I think they did fine on Origamil(although barely passable), the rest are just were full of misses. Aside from the terrible artstyle and animation, there's cutting off Natsumi's inner thoughts that shows her social anxiety and severe trauma, making her nothing but "Yoshino 2.0." And the biggest one is rushing Volume 12 in just one episode. It's cuts off Nia and Artemesia's first appearance, and also the first namedrop of Mio in the whole series from Shidou himself.
And then 6 months later, KnY Episode 19 happened. Anime went mainstream, and everything changed. It didn't help when 2020 happened and more series like AoT, SxF, and CSM took over the mainstream until now. People don't even know that Date A Bullet already aired or even it's existence(don't watch it btw, because it's terrible)
Now this 2022, 3 years after S3 and after 3-4 delays, of course it would be surprising to people that this thing is still kicking. And now it's already forgotten as a whole and LN readers are just there waiting for translations of either DAB final volume or more updates for the Encore side stories(which is still ongoing btw). It also didn't help that S4 is suffering from S3's blunder and how old the previous seasons are, and to the mid tier adaptation.

The whole point of the anime is bizarre and they actually made it seem serious and dramatic even tho the plot is all about Shido capturing the powers of the spirits by kissing them

You guys need to read more stories if you honestly believe shido is the best kind of protagonist of any genre. Date a live held so much promise only to stumble and fall on its face it has all the issues of other mid tier stories. Poor world building, most of the cast doesn't do anything, the villains are jokes, there's no stakes or tension. "World shattering " events can be undone at the snap of a finger. Shidos whole role as a protagonist is to lie, cheat and simp for girls to keep them happy. He literally gets handed power when the plot says. The girls somehow fall in love with him after one date the reason usually being "he was the first person to be nice to me" like come on the writers think I'm stupid or something. The rules of how the world and powers work have still not been explained. Tohka was one of my favorite female characters then the story took a dump on her character and pulled some fairy tail level writing twice near the end that pissed me off. Date a live has serious problems that only get compounded upon as the story goes on. I wanted to like it. Gave it a chance up to season 3 and the lns. It's not the super high quality people say it is and it's definitely not for me anymore. A story that tries to set up a clear romance between two characters where one doesn't even care about the other outside of it being his job.
