Hey Ken, I should have mentioned this, I noticed that the check engine light was on and it is possibly the fact that Rusty is in limp mode, meaning that if there is a significant problem with the vehicle, the point is to get to a shop for inspection. That is why it won't shift out of 2nd gear. Hope that helps.
It lasted almost 3 years despite your original statement to keep it 4-6 months and get something else. So, to recap-pure facts: You stated you paid $4800 for a 10 year old Chrysler in 2021 (problematic already) with over 300k on the odometer. You have since sunk at least $5k into it along the way by your own admission, and that likely doesn't include gas or insurance. That means the brake job, getting the doors fixed, the new wheels/tires and other misc repairs. I guess this is the result of "rolling the dice" as you said back in the initial 2021 vlog.
Yeah so on three years he spent approximately 10K on rusty. But, all the videos he's done with rusty (probably well over 100) he's more than made that up
My dad drives a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan just like this except without all the gadgets, so theres just a bunch of blank plastic where the buttons would otherwise be (even on the remote). 300 000 kilometres going, theres alot of money spend on taking care of the car, but in the end it scores you much cheaper insurance and they dont make cars like these anymore. Nobody wants a bulky SUV that cant fit more than 4 people, yet these minivans can easily fit 6-7 people, have plenty of storage, the stow and go is killer, and camping even without the whole setup is super easy. What an amazing car, so sad that they dont make it anymore, and so sad that theyre slowly dissapearing as problems such as yours arise with age.
You are better off fixing the transmission and driving it another 1 to 3 years vs overspending on a van with the prices where they are at these days unfortunately. Love the content!

I feel your pain Ken! I was caught in that heavy wet snow fall a couple weeks ago. Before a arctic blast in metro Detroit that lasted a week. Didnt drive the vehicle till it warmed up several days later which was Friday. Needed gas, put $75 in, pulled out of the station and had a catastrophic break. Passengers side ball joint, tie rod's, struts, wheel bearing. 3,000 + estimate on my 2008 4×4 explorer, not worth fixing. Town and country and 4×4 explorers drain the wallet when something goes wrong. Needless to say, web shopping another vehicle, in between catching up on KBD productions, and Van City. RIP Rusty. 🙏🚘✌️
Sorry to see this today and that you need to get rid of Rusty. Im happy however it was utilized in a video I had you do. On a good note you have tons of memories of camp outs and it really doesn't owe you anything from it all.
We just had a similar problem with our newer Malibu. The solenoid needed replaced and then a throttle body needed replaced. It would go into limp mode out of no where and couldn't go into 3rd gear. Transmission place said whoever changed the oil didn't seal it up right afterwards and it leaks oil all over the parts. Engine light went off. Shifts just fine. Back to flying!
Just because the shop says it can make $3-4k doing an unnecessary job doesn't mean you shouldnt keep getting second opinions. And third and so fourth until you get someone honest. Preferably someone who cant figure out who you are who knows how important Rusty is to all of us. I never liked moose as a camper for the show. I always liked the stealth concept. You're ending that part of the show and that makes me sad. Doing the show in moose is just like you said. It's not stealth and not the same. If its going to die anyway, why not try drastic measures. NoNonsenseKnowHow recently did a video where he revived a non shifting honda and the the car is working again. Can you PLEASE just research how to change shift solenoid on UA-cam to see how easy it is and low cost before choosing to euthanize unnecessarily? It is completely not an expensive job. Maybe an hour if that remove and replace. The part can range but its about $200 new. If you go to a junkyard near you there will be guys who work dirt cheap who don't have it in them to gouge you because they work independently. Have them change a used shift solenoid in and try. Its peanuts in cost. $60 plus $20 if you want a 90 day return warranty. And like probably $50 to the guy to change it. Now is your chance to film a how to video and not even know what's going on. And those videos make so much money! Even if it fails, you'll be making your money back from doing the 1700 in brakes last December.

Happy Birthday to Your Mom, Ken!!! A long time ago, I asked myself this question, "How will I know when to give up on my car?" The answer was pretty simple, "When I went from the masculine gender pronoun (he/him/his) to it/its is how I knew I had given up on my 1973 Chevy Caprice Classic...trying to get into 2nd gear and would NOT no matter what I did, no matter what prayer I prayed...it was late 1986..."
