one safety thing would be for Ariel to stand at base of ladder once you are on it and support side with hands and step on feet of ladder with her toes. My one accident with the ladder it slipped out from underneath me. If I had a person stand on the bottom it probably wouldn't have happened. Both going up and coming down, it slipped on me coming off roof.

As stated, the ladder is backwards, the feet are supposed to sit flat on the ground. As per NFPA the ladder is to be placed 2 to 3 rungs above the working level, like he did. The NFPA requirements for using a ladder is at least 2 people, one to climb and one to heel. There are 2 ways they recognize for the heeler to do it, one is as stated above of holding their arms level to the ground and either standing on the bottom rung or place their toes on the feet of the ladder. Second way is for the heeler to stand under the ladder with their arms at chest level and lean back towards the building, the one must for this technique is for the not to look up and have head and eye protection. Lastly, is to use a rope to tie the bottom of the ladder to the structure at the bottom but a heeler is still needed when someone is one the ladder

ladders are so dangerous. I feel safer climbing rock faces or trees on ropes and a harness than being 10 feet up on a ladder.

@@donhepler294 mine was washing some windows 2nd story above the first story pushed out dining room. I am glad my fall was from 10', but onto cement, standing and hurt a vertibrae. I am so careful about ladders ever since. I hired a person to go with me every time I had to use a ladder, if only just for that.

,We have a stove with a glass door in our cabin. It will go dark , often, when you burn in it. If the soot do not go away during firing, you can wait till the stove gets cold, wet a piece of kitchen roll paper, dip it in the ash, and scrub away the soot. Then dry off remnants. I have seen people use expensive sprays, but that is not necessary. I just think I would tell you in case you did not know. The stove turned out really beautiful! Regards from Sweden!

Well per usual you guys are on top of things. Stove looks great, the glass is the way it should be on a cold winters night. I'm mostly impressed with how much wood you have stashed away! You appear to be in pretty good shape for an early winter and look how much you have accomplished this summer woodshed , new privy, orchard, water tank, and soon a bountiful harvest. The work never ends but when you are doing something you love with someone you love the reward. Is contentment peace and joy. I have to give a shout out to the chickens, I have often thought about what other livestock would work for you and actually chickens are enough and a good choice , that they produce so well is testament to your good care. Hindus have an expression " Save the cow and the cow will save you" That's how I feel about having chickens.

We had a company come out and service our pellet stove and they used the same paint, it did give off fumes the first few times we used the stove. You might want to fire it up a few times before you start using it for cooking again.

That flue needs to be cleaned more often. A good general rule I was taught is every 1 1/2 cords. This is what I do. The house cools down a bit but that's ok. It doesn't take that long.
With your burning pine you may have to do it more often. You don't want a chimney fire.
Check into a Rocket Mass Heater Stove to help take the stress off the wood burner.

Pine seems to have more sap than the hard woods. If it is smoking a lot when you open the door, stove pipe may need cleaned. If we have a cold spell & put a-lot of wood thru it, we clean it. Our wood is mainly oak & hickory.

so your only 32 going on 33 no wonder you two have so much energy, I want to get out of here so bad but I'm 58 going on 59 this February And I don't know If I have what it takes to do the Long cold winters let along the time you have to prepare for winter. I've done a lot of car work in my life and pretty much ruined my body, but I think it's time to liquidate and start taking care of myself. I'm not married and I've never had children. I always put other people and cars, trucks, big trucks and equipment before myself and all my tools I have 30 ton log splitter that I've only used twice. I've got about 6 cords of wood in my shed and over a cord of cottonwood split and stacked and covered primarily for out door burns, sometimes I mix it in wood stove. it was storm fallage. then I've had I huge hemlock come down in a storm and I had to pay to have 2 monster hemlocks taken down because one was dying and the other one was over 160ft tall and it sat 30" away from my mobile home but in the storms it would bend all the way over the mobile home, it had to go. I have rounds stacked and covered everywhere and had to cut it all up into 16" rounds just to roll them out of the woods never finished it. I'd like to sent you pictures of my place, maybe on messenger if that's okay. I'm the only one here that can handle winter out here, I have 9 older costco car covers out here one with 33" extension legs on it for 33' motor home, two of the makes a 40' cover. never lost one to snow load. lost one tarp to falling snow tree bombs. I know where to buy the real cover and all the parts for them 2003 and up ( TSY Taiwan Shin Yen) Costco uses them. don't buy a new Costco car cover they're junk. I love your shows, I watched then all night long again. I'm retired.

Another great video! Nice work on the fireplace! SO sad when these videos come to an end, lol. I always look at the few people that give these videos a thumbs down and think "what the crap, what's not to like!?! Seriously!"

WOW. That was a lot of soot. I had a thirty foot chimney and only had a quarter of that. Maybe too much pine?? I always started my fire with pine but kept the flute wide open. Best to have small fires in the chimney than a large one. So burn off little at a time. I do understand being in a small place and being too hot. Just run the stove wide open and open a window for awhile. Just my opinion. Love y'all's videos.

Just to further clarify my previous comments. No more climbing over the top of a ladder on your hands and knees. That is just not allowed... You are upright and vertical when you step around the ladder and onto the roof...The height of the ladder above the eave, will allow you to do that safely. That distance is actually from the bottom of your feet to your center of balance above your hips. If a roof is wet or has frost STAY OFF. I have never fell from a roof but have came close... I really try not to even go up there anymore. I just do not think that I bounce well today and would really not like to fuck up both of my brandy new knees. Be safe. Peace Jim

A good grade of duck tape on that collar will last 5 to 10 years.. Stoves like cooking oil every week or so just like your frying pans.. I keep a rag in a Crisco can ,, keeps the stove looking sharp,, like a seasoned frypan!! Aloha

I didn't listen properly because I was doing something while watching so I first heard "Just got back with that owl it's sitting out in the truck.. So I'm gonna show you how much SOUP came out of that thing" and I legit thought you had cooked soup on the owl there for a second and had to rewatch :D

for next time; Dawn dish detergent and vinegar would make quick work of your woodstove cap. It does wonderful magic stuff!

Andrew Storie is correct, ALSO fire fighters are trained to extend the ladder, in my time 3 rungs, but I think now it's 4 or 5 rungs above the the point of contact. Then you can be fully upright with a hand hold and step straight onto the roof

My grandmother used to grease her old cooking wood stove surface with pig rind (with the inner, fat side). Preserves the metal and also blackens pretty good after cooking. You can use one rind multiple times.

As a 66 year old fart with one knee replacement and another to come, with a bad back, this is not possible for me. But if I could turn back the clock to my twenties or thirties, I would love to live off grid in Alaska. The main negative to me is the fact that if you never work at a job that you pay into Social Security, you won't have it when you turn 65.

Hi Mate great job and workmanship. Just remember a 6ft fall can kill you and your up 20 plus so be good to wear a harness (roofers kit)

Look into a poly brush (or plastic). When you use the metal brushes they tend to eventually wear (score) a groove in the double wall pipe. Over time with the heat and cold causing the stainless to expand and contract. We got about seven or eight years out of our pipe before it split and the rock wool was showing. Found that out when I was cleaning the pipe and all the insulation was coming out. Low and behold there was a huge crack and after talking to our manufacturer (Selkirk) we should have used a plastic bristle, metal is for stone flavors.

Heys i know it's been 11 months but noticed a missing single with an exposed nail on the roof when you did your chimney. That could leak. I'm sure you got that already. Sure I'm a few days late on this text

YOU might want to think about buying a 2nd cap. That way you'll be able to remove and replace the cap at the same time. Then clean the removed cap put in the shed and you'll have it ready for next year. This way you'll only have to go up on the roof 1 time each year. Just a thought.

I have a similar stove, 12 feet of chimney pipe. I clean chimney from inside stove. No going on roof. I use a cheap drain cleaning snake. It's a flat metal tape on a little spool with a spring on the end. Like an electrician fish tape. I work it up to the cap, then wiggle it in a circular motion slowly back down to the stove. Wind it back up on the spool and done. I have a big pile of soot in the fire box like you did. Real easy and no roof work, unless I'm going to clean the cap.

Great episode but I really would have liked to see more about the owl and the rescue center. Part of the reason, I watch your show is in hopes of seeing wild animals as you naturally see them. But, if you recognize my login, you know I love your show and have seen every episode. The stove revamp looks awesome!
