Great video as always, the perfect mix of tech & natural vlogging altogether!
If you go down to around f5.6 on blur it gets more realistic
I was thinking that. While I was watching it.
He’s a film maker his job is to protect business so he’s not going to mention that
@@ContinuousFantasy Lol if you seriously think film makers are pressed by an iphone
The right answer. Tyler Stalman has the best Cinematic Video I've seen yet, and it's because of this. I still can't believe so many big UA-camrs couldn't figure this out on their videos.... lol
Yea, 2.8 is unusable. I was thinking 8.0, but 5.6 might work. I'm still waiting for the damn thing to come in the mail so I can test it out.
Just got an iPhone 13 pro max and I love it! I updated from an iPhone 7 Plus lol so it’s a huge upgrade for me. I was using a Sony ZV-1 to vlog and even though that is a small camera. It was still cumbersome to bring that camera as well as my phone. Now I don’t have to do that anymore. I’m going all in on vlogging on an iPhone. Building up a little rig that I can just fit into my sling bag. The fact that it’s so convenient and the cameras are such good quality for photo and video it makes me feel more free to be creative. Instead of having to worry about bringing my ZV-1 and Sony A7C around. I can’t wait for the new Moment cases to come out so I can get some moment lenses. That will take my iPhone vlogging to the next level. You should make a video about using moment lenses on the iPhone 13 pro max main lens since the quality is so good on it.
Let me say the camera improvement has come a long way. We forgot to grab my camera on a road trip & I used my 12 pro max & i wasn’t disappointed in the pics I took. I look at my fav pics from my older iPhones & you can definitely see the improvements. Great video as always.
Potatoes next video
"iPhone 13 pro max vs. Arri Alexa LF"
Whose sensor is better for low light 😝😂❤️
Ahhh the annual iPhone comparison video! The cinematic mode is I think only the beginning to computational photography. Apple did a good first take on it, I’m sure with machine learning and AI, it’ll only improve in the next iPhone.
Edit: I miss Sam!
Yes. The next Iphone will make real progress,, unlike past generations. Iphones will start framing the shot properly, timing the shot, refusing to record crappy subject matter, and will present a frikin holograph of the other caller, right in front of you. You heard it here first.
Where did sam go?
@@fmz-4618 I think Gene said that he’s doing some Netflix project - couple videos back, so he’s not much available these days.
@@HardyOhoh thanks for the info
Even though it is impressive I can still sleep at night as it still looks off compared to a pro camera.
“Big pixels is what I’m all about”
Ahh, Genes a big pixel kind of guy 😏
This is their 1st gen cinematic mode. Give it a few more years and I'm sure it will get way better. The iPhone still won't replace a proper camera anytime soon but I can see a lot of uses for it once the tech gets better in a few more iterations.
All it has to do is reach the quality of the portrait mode of photos and it will already be infinitely better.
@@PiercingSight True but I think it will be a while before its on that level.
@@ErikWerlin Hmm.. we'll see but probably not.
@@jonothandoeser I dont think it will replace a proper camera ever but I can see uses where It would be easier to use future iphones vs a dslr for the shallow depth of field.
@@ErikWerlin That's the EXACT same thing people said when digital cameras came out. "I don't think it will replace a real camera ever!" It didn't take long to kill the film camera.
Just got mine and I‘m really happy with it. Really like that it has the 77mm lens now. It‘s great to have it with me when I don‘t bring my mirrorless.
Bro Do you have videos explaining camera stuff? You’re one of the few UA-camrs who’s message is understandable for me so if you teach stuff I’d love to tune in.
He’s got a whole course for like 25 bucks or so. All the things.
Where is Sam!? Where is Sam!? Where is Sam!? 😭😭😭😭
We can always count on you Gene, If it has a video recording sensor, you’ll review it for us. Great Review & Vlog as always, Thank You!
(Showing Love From Annapolis Md)
💯💯💯
That sunset behind Kari was a phenomenal looking shot. Mind blown!
I was most impressed by the random Grand Prix
Unfortunately phones still look artificial and completely break down in lower light. I can definitely see the day where specialized fast lenses with good bokeh aren't necessary, especially with an adequate enough depth sensor on the camera itself, and you can do it all in post from any lens you want and never have to worry about setting the right aperture ever again.
Ngl my 10 year old camera shot better than the latest iphone in term of depth and details. The iphone has good sharpness though
The quality of the video in the lower light situations still look pretty muddy and the jittery reflection of lights in the dark in the AR coating on the camera still doesn’t compare to the big boy cameras. Overall it’s not bad but it’s still not going to replace my actual camera for now.
I don’t think anyone is really expecting these to replace a big camera yet. But what they do is amazing for what they are. The camera module costs between $50-100 bucks. That’s incredible.
@@melgross it's not gonna replace camera forever tbh, both are built differently for different demographics, there's a lot of things that smartphones can't achieve with how smartphones are built (slim and small)
@@Henry_44 I know that. I used to shoot Tv commercials, among other things. Everything gets better over time. But what we’re seeing here is that smartphone photography and video have been improving faster than more traditional formats. Today’s top smartphones are better than professional video cameras of ten years ago. That in itself is a pretty big accomplishment. That’s why we see major movies and Tv shows using them. Most people can’t tell when a scene shot on an iPhone is inserted into a sequence.
@@Henry_44 The phone camera already killed pocket camera, it might kill sub $1000 camera soon if iPhone can improve the low light video qualities
I would NEVER use Cinematic Mode for a filmmaking shoot, especially since it's only record in 30 fps. But I would definitely use the iPhone 13 Pro Max to shoot an indie film, and probably will very soon. Why? It shoot in 4K ProRes format, and in 24 fps, which is enough. As for low-light shooting, this does a great job for a smartphone but I would still use a DSLR camera with better low-light sensor and also a camera with a 50mm lens or higher for that bokeh effect with the blurry background.
To be completely honest I think the cinematic mode is only a slightly better than portrait videos on androids. The blur looks fake, the edges too soft. I'll stick to normal videos on iPhone because they are amazing and this cinematic thing will take 2-3 years to reach a usable point.
You can adjust the aperture though to get rid of the blue this is what he’s looking over
incridible footage! I wish my iphone12pro will have cinematic mode in some update.
First time Potato Jet viewer. Great, casual style. Quick pace but thorough. Love it!
I just got a new 12 pro max. It's not water resistant when jumping from a cliff. I think when we hit the water the impact forced water into the bottom of the phone. So... yeah. Don't do that.
Next time enclose it in a water tight plastic clear baggy, Ala zip freezer bag.
is it time for an UP-grade? (Dylan voice) As they say. what goes down must come UP. The iPhone digital cinematic mode is like balloons on a flying house...yes its UP-lifting, yes it looks cool but does it really make sense?
Thanks for the review!
I’m excited to say I picked up an EOS R5 and a iPhone 13 pro max. Prices raised lol upgrading from a GH5 🎉
Still have it tho because I love that damn camera!
Also the S21 Ultra has zoom that is so much better, also the new Vivo X70 Pro Plus is better by a little bit in photos than the iPhone but can’t compete with video from what I’ve seen.
Great insight! I am loving my 13 Pro!
Damn, that ultra wide angle video is Where it’s AT!
I like how you’re so casual about being able to change focus points and aperture in post right on the phone. There is no camera on the planet that can do this….
I have used that feature on my Honor 6x like 4 or 5 years ago. Works flawlessly. Though it was only on photo mode.
Having the iPhone 13's Cinematic Mode being limited to 1080p, 30fps means that they'll probably give the next year's iPhone 14 (or 13S?) 4k60, which is what we all are all honestly want.
So if I were you I would wait for that.
Finally my man! waited this vid for so long. Great content as always
The iPhone's Cinematic mode reminds me of an old german saying: "Wie gewollt und nicht gekonnt." Maybe Dylan can translate that for you, but if not, it means something like "willing but unable". A nice thought and surely a gimmick for the average user filming their pets, but for anyone remotely interested in professional video, Cinematic mode is hardly "professional".
Thats the Event Adam LZ was at. 2 UA-camrs I enjoy were so close to each other lol
I feel like this is definitely one of the better reviews out there, perfect mix of comparisons, specs, insight and footage.. nice job! 😀👌👌
Where did Sam go?
Just want to give a shoutout to those good good target brand pants from dylan! I live and die by that brand....as far as clothes go.
Try the same mode on OnePlus 9 pro called portrait video. It is much better in sharpness and edges. Sadly, it wont work with selfie camera.
I mean, the cameras are getting better indeed, but the prices of the phones is going up too. (At least where I live, I don't know about the US of A). So cameras are worth cause' you get full control and you'll pay about the same price as the iphone for an S5/A7III for example. So yeah, they're good, but they're not THAT good.
Imagine this tech in a mirrorless camera (a flip out screen that can access apps 😱)
Running apps on a relatively tiny flip out screen of poor resolution. Please. Just NO.
potato jet im a big fan (not in weight) but I've been watching ur videos and its so cool and ur so Rich because u have cool cameras
Was waiting for this review
So it is obvious... if sony (or any other manufacturers) won't come up -and fast - with a small easy to carry pocket camera (maybe a new rx100 mark8) with in body stabilization (not fake-digital--crop-gotopc-to-use-other-program-gyro-data-shit-stabilization) with wide to tele lens (maybe a mix lens of zv1 & rx100vii) and good auto focus... then cameras will fall and die (like mp3 players did.). Netflix now produce movies with Iphone13. Sorry for my notsogood english.. but i believe you get the point.
THANKS FOR SHARING CONSIDERING OF BUYING
Rear screen for the next iPhone!!
Gene, where are your vlogs
The cinematic mode on the new iPhones is pretty impressive. And the over all camera upgrades to the iPhone 13 Max is very impressive. Great testing, and thanks for sharing.
I really noticed the 13 pro Max the wide angle lens: when you were doing low light shots you could really see how much more light was hitting the sensor by the color of Dylan's shirt. I know you were doing side by side but one of them almost looked gray and washed out where on the 13 pro Max the blacks look really dark and full body.
It was enough for my eyes to wonder if Dylan had washed his shirt looking at the 12 but then when you saw the 13 pro max it was like you could tell how new and clean and nice that shirt was.
If you were filming on your phone all day I could see that the upgrade would be worth it or if you're on like an 11... Still have a hard time justifying that 1300 bucks or whatever just out of pocket when you could purchase the iMac and a insta360 camera for what you drop on that phone.
Thanks for the great video I'm glad that I now understand what's going on with the 13 pro. It'll be one of these days soon where the cameras are just so good and the software is so intelligent that the need skill will drop off during the filming and happen only in the editing room.
The new iPhone feature that everybody seems to be ignoring is the FBI snitching.
Bro plz review vivo x70 pro plus vs iPhone 13 pro max plzzzzz🙏🙏🙏🙏
Once you stop your recording, can you start recording from the same place you stopped recording on an iPhone 13 promax ? Or do I need to buy a professional video camera to do that?
Where is sam
Got the phone, but I'm starting to figure it out. Kinda dissapointed so far.
Dope montage when you guys arrive at the grand pee. 🤣
its not worth the upgrade from the 12. from the 11 its a better improvement but I wouldn't upgrade unless you were on a X or older.
Me watching Apple showcase: Wow🤯
Me after people reviewing: Oh😐
I hope so because my cameras can’t focus any more on my iPhone pro max 11
How about that vlog channel, GENE
I won’t be upgrading I mean my iPhone 12 Pro Max is fine I’m shooting videos on it at the moment! As it’s a perfect vlog camera sure the cinematic mode would be cool! But not worth an upgrade! I’ll upgrade to the 14 tho I think!

Very informative video! Thank you! As a newer vlogger I invested in a G7X but don’t want to always tote it around especially with small purses. If this phone has just as much focus as an actual vlogging camera I’m here for it! Will be purchasing soon!
Where is Sam? Just wondering.
Been waiting for this video in your channel
They really need to focus on fixing those annoying orbs when you’re shooting low light for the next iPhone.
When you switch a Cinematic mode video back to standard under the edit settings does it convert from HD to 4K?
You forget to talk about the ProRes
Great video, if possible please do a video on vivo x70pro plus😊
I was at the Indy Car race and saw a woman that I thought looked a lot like Kari and I did a double take and then saw you and Dillan walking behind
Samsung Note 10+ has it it's called portrait video.
I got the white iphone 13 pro max 128gb and i've been so happy with my phone. i previously had the gold iphone 11 pro 64gb. If anyone been considering the iphone 13 pro max but cringe at the price, GET IT! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT, LOL I SWEAR! I have an unboxing video for mine as well as test shots using it. Great iphone!
Gene: "And i've got a TB of storage so i never have to stop recording"
Kerri: *nervous laugh*
Investing in crypto is the only big chance of making money
For real crypto is profitable
I wanted to trade Crypto but got confused by the fluctuations in price
These is the kind of information we don't see from most youtubers
@@Debbie_Hummer That won't bother you if you trade with a professional like Mr Elvin Amos.
My first investment with Elvin Amos I made profit of over $30,000 US dollar ever since then he has been delivering
Call me when they put the same camera in the front facing as the rear facing.
Seriously its the one thing I always asked for and was always disappointed. Even with my iPhone X the selfie cam is just straight bad most of the time. Especially without a really bright light or a flash.
Yooo I'll never afford iPhone 13 that phone is super expensive here in South Africa 😭
When talking about f-stops on the iP13P, is it correct to say that the aperture is being controlled electronically? i.e. sensor sensitivity vs. an actual adjustment to the light hitting the sensor?
Why is every film maker neglecting the fact that you can adjust the blur effect on UA-cam oh yeah they want to keep business coming in so they skip over that fact
Please show a warning sign next time you show a full screen spider 😅
cinematic mode = toneh mode
Thank you, you just saved me some money. There is no point to upgrade 12 to this one, camera wise.
The side-by-side comparisons are great. Thank you. I am upgrading from the 11 Pro Max and it looks like the 13 Pro Max will be worth the upgrade given my line of work. I prefer to use a real camera, but the technology is not there for me to easily and rapidly offload footage in the field yet (the Sony Xperia Pro's ads were...misleading), meaning I have to fall back to filming with a cellphone more than I'd like.
I’m team Android, just here for the personalities in these vids
love it potato papi
I don’t know if you guys are able to tell but it’s still making people’s faces Orange. You guys look like a bunch of Oompa Loompas. It’s the worst camera system I’ve ever seen on a phone honestly. The colors are really ugly and the sharpening is way too intense. I’m waiting for the pixel
Wow watching this in 4k I'm struck how terrible all of the iphone footage looks with extremely heavy oversharpening and noise reduction. Maybe the prores recording will remove that? It would look soo much better and less like a phone if there was a way to turn sharpening and NR off.
Hey Potato Jet!!! Thanks for this video!!! We’re thinking about shooting a film with the new 13 Pro Max so this video is super helpful!
Great video Potato Jet. All of the other UA-camrs are having rave reviews about the iPhone 13 Pro just to save face with Apple. I am happy that you actually show real world footage on the phone and its imperfections. Maybe, this is why you got it later than most?
Eerm her hat is glowing because it's yellow and it's sunny duh not because of the fake blurred background 😂
Bro they have everybody fooled, all they do is downgrade the newest phones camera and make it buggy so you think you upgraded when you buy the newest phone🤦🏾♂️
The beginning of cinematic mode.
Thank you for testing and showing results of cinematic mode. Side by side comparisons are much appreciated. 👍
disappointed the telephoto is not 85mm equivalent
It seems to me that Apple is saying, this Cinematic fakery is good enough. I don't like it. Even though I am an android person, I truly envied the photo and video quality, not to mention all the great tools that are made for iPhones. But, we all have our preferences and reasons that keep us with the phones what we ultimately get. It's the Ford, Chevy, Dodge thing to me. You either like one specifically until death or you don't care.
I miss Sam. What happened?
I wonder if he got a steady job and just doesn't have time to be in Gene's videos recently.
For some reason my portrait mode is so much worse on my iPhone 12 mini compared to all my friends iPhone 12s and their iPhone 12 mini’s
Does anyone else have this problem?
My iPhone 13 Pro Max 512GB arrives today going to do a video on it too can’t wait! 🥳🥳🥳
This phone is mental
cinematic mode looks cheap af. also lens flare on iphone is the worst on a phone
V 1.0 of Cinematic mode. Thing is as you pointed out you can change it up in post. Thing is I want Apple to change the port from the now lame lightning port introduced back on September 12, 2012 this is not a professional device.
"Think Different"... The "IEC 62680-1-3" USB4 port.in host mode all options on data transfer rate is 40 Gbit/s. I feel the need, the need for speed.
Great Review! Also ordered that one... Does anyone no the best way to attach the Rhode Wireless 2 to an iphone so I have the 2 separate channels (interview situation) ?
I saw your video-this video 2 years go. And I've been looking for it since, i just found it now! Awesome review.❤🔥
Edit
This was the video that got me looking into the car racing, and iphone pro max camera rabbit hole. 😂 I looked up keywords like car racing.😂
It was a little disconcerting why you were shoving the camera up to her face repeatedly, even when she remarked about it. Perhaps the camera has issues with distance? In cinematic vs Standard, I noticed cine had more trouble with distance focus when there was no foreground subject. I actually prefer the standard lut.
It's obviously a simulated depth of field effect created by software in real-time, that's why her cap was halo fringing and you could post production change focus point and clarity. The unfocused background did look more "blurry" than "bokeh", I felt odd looking at it. Perhaps after a couple future iterations, Apple will greatly improve. No replacement for a good pro-sumer camera though.
Oh mylanta……I may upgrade now and give my iPhone 12max to my daughter. 😂
