    Playing this in my freshman orchestra class in only a few days! It’s one of my favorite pieces that I’ve played

    I read a brief bio on Price, and she was quite a remarkable individual. She was a genius who gave her 1st piano recital at age 4, and graduated high school with honors when she was only a freshman's age (14).

    She had so much potential. If only she had been able to develop her gifts more fully. Alas that was not to be the case in her case, for various reasons. But what we have gives a glimpse of a very deep soul with much to say.

      She did what she could at that moment! The good thing is that she did not stay in the shadows... it is old but new music we can access now

    I knew this as a piece for organ, but your expressive, deeply moving performance gave me a renewed interest in playing it during February.

    I actually just played this song in 8th grade and it is our hardest song and my teacher says it’s the hardest program he has put together for an 8th grade orchestra. He’s such an amazing teacher and if anyone could tell me the style of music this is in I would appreciate that

      Eighth grade? I didn't learn it until ninth, haha (middle school was not on this level). I am not sure of the exact genre but apparently Florence B. Price composed many romantic style classical pieces, so for music similar to this you could start there.

    SO beautiful. This is like acoustical therapy for me. I think anybody whose feeling agitated or stressed for any reason should listen to this, and it will help calm them, and put them at ease.
    I've heard the term "lush harmony", but I've never heard a better example of it than in this beautiful piece. I know Florence wrote this piece for piano- I wish I knew who did this arrangement for strings. It's just beautiful, and seems to elevate this piece to an even higher order, somehow -to me it does, anyway. Here's a beautiful performance in a flute/piano arrangement: ua-cam.com/video/O7WgnqmRTX0/v-deo.html

    • @christianreynolds7856
      @christianreynolds7856 2 роки тому +3

      YES. Florence Price’s works are the epitome of lush-it just sucks that we talk so much about Tchaikovsky for this exact reason (albeit very justifiably) while completely disregarding Price. She’s an absolute inspiration to composers like myself !

    • @catkeys6911
      @catkeys6911 2 роки тому +2

      @@christianreynolds7856 Well, Price is now starting to get the recognition she deserves. Back in her time, there was still a lot of racial bullshit in the atmosphere, stifling her recognition, but society has matured a bit since then. And we have UA-cam. You get a lot of crap on UA-cam, but you also get gems like this.

    Sure it a good song but my phone sound quality made my ears fall off

  • @brunyate

    I am impressed by the lush sonority of this performance too. But I see a cognitive dissonance between the music and the pictures of America that come in between, good though these are. Would it not be possible to show the images that relate to the composer's own personal experience? Though my real problem may be that-unlike William Grant Still, for example-I hear nothing in the music that tells me that it is American, let alone African American, as opposed to, say, a very fine piece by Elgar.

    • @brunyate
      @brunyate Місяць тому

      Coming back to this a year later, I find the cognitive dissonance stimulating rather than distracting. But I still stick to my Elgar comment.
