Vince is the only reviewer I've seen pointing out micro stutter on the standard 50Hz content we get in the UK, which is really noticeable as soon as you spot it. Can't believe this is still an issue on some TVs. There really is no excuse.

Frequency is frequency. To change it the frequency would need to be changed automatically by the TV or monitor. Then we’d likely not be getting the exact frequency as advertised- perhaps a few FPS difference here or there. Facts is we get 50HZ through the wall end of. Or could always move to America 😂

It’s also a problem over here in the US, with 60Hz content…very noticeable during football, especially pre snap.
That’s why I turn off MCFI/TruMotion…I just can’t take the side effects of it. I loath SOE…and hate artifacts. I enjoy my 24p film cadence, but do dislike when things start looking like a slide show due to sample and hold.
What really urks me…is that there is a near black flickering with TruMotion enabled on the CX, which shows up a lot in DV/HDR content. Idk…there’s just too many negative with it, to use it..in my use case, and for my eyes.
I will say, I really do like how motions resolution is improved…..I’ve tried a million times to use De-Judder on 1, or use Cinema Clear…I find the artifacts and SOE to still be too annoying. It makes many scenes look better…but then will ruin another one.

I usually dont comment on anything.. but i had to return 2 c1 tvs because of some weird vertical bars on both sides of the panel. I used the 2nd c1 for few days before returning it. Finally i got an a80j 55 inch. And i can confirm.. the picture quality is definitely better on the sony and the colours are much more natural . for gaming i really cant see any difference when it comes to motion and respose time , But the visual are again better on the a80j. Thats just my experience with these oleds.

Do you have a basic starter list of settings for the C1 that you found brought it more in line to the A80J in terms of color accuracy and general image processing, black levels, etc - things that in your view are no brainers? (I have seen your Three LG C1 Settings Video btw). There are clear differences between the two, but it seems to me that unless viewing each side by side, BOTH are incredible and the perceivable picture quality to all but the most discerning of people is nearly exactly the same? Or VRR, FreeSync or G-Sync. It seems like Sony doesn't care as much about gaming features this year than Xbox, even though they both instigated HGiG. Also, why they chose to make one of their two HDMI 2.1 ports eARC is beyond me.

    • @guily6669
      @guily6669 3 роки тому +3

@@cun7us Yep, which is sad as I only care for PS5 since thankfully M$ is so friendly to leave everything they had for PC...
It's sad that Dolby vision gaming is only happening on Xbox and the normal PS4\PS5 HDR is probably made exactly to make samsung persistence in HDR10+ to even pay off much more since HDR10 is what games will be using on the PS5 and the HDR10+ crap will simply make HDR10 better and sadly it's not very common for TV's to have "HDR10+" + Dolby Vision, most get stuck in HDR10 + Dolby Vision (the ones that support both).
Then Xbox is probably also the only one to get Dolby Atmos gaming support while Sony went for their own tempest 3D which I think is only another Fake surround crap to add on top of every current brand X, Y, Z amazing new 3D sound technology which is all the same fake crap (based on reverbs and echoes on top of reverbs and boom call it 7.1)...
And even more sad is Sony does indeed support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on the PS5 if I'm not mistaken so it means they actually paid DOLBY royalties and then have no use for them as they leave it only for movies and have left them off for the number 1 feature of their hardware which is playing games on a god damn gaming console (it's even stupider than Samsung as they only want MAX profit so they deny to pay Dolby royalties to finally have Dolby support on their TV's like other brands do, Sony pays but just to leave the features there sleeping for movies like if gamers will ever applaud to that crap).
ps: Sony is always like: Here's your number 1 gaming feature specially made for gamers... But only for movies!!. THANK YOU GAMERS ALL OVER THE WORLD FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND BELIEF IN OUR BRAND :)

Hope it's not another X90H all the promised features went to... HELL
Well eventually after a year Sony indeed made the 4K 120hz working at least then the quality is all blurred and they never fixed it because the crap cheap chinese MTK they chose basically wasn't powerful enough to process 4K 120 FPS with good quality so they had to compress stuff looking like Vaseline added on top.
Then they claimed to fix that vaseline and yeas they did a few time later by just updating the TV with just added sharpness as a fix that never fixed it or did anything at all because adding sharpness would never fix a compressed lower quality blurred image, just slightly improve it on the fake side.
Up to this day the promised VRR on the old X90H most likely is still awaiting lool
In terms of software Sony is the worse brand out there as just like on modern Playstation consoles they can't even make a lag-free menu like any other console brand (other than the PS5), they also take huge time to fix stuff and they tend to break stuff from "x" to "x" update.
On the X90H I had 2 for only like a month and Sony kept fixing something and completely breaking others even with a TV they already had for a full year working on it after release (I totally remember just 1st update after getting the TV completely broke it and made the TV to keep randomly restarting). Then they fixed the restart issues and broke the sound and they keep this goin on and ON for ever FFS SONY...
ps: if you go Sony way don't expect them to activate or fix missing features so soon and keep your hopes very low, in fact you can keep your hope high is that at certain updates they will keep breaking something that was perfectly working before ~GUARANTEED! :)

This is exactly the review I needed. I was planning to buy the SONY A80J. However, seeing the screenshot at minute-marker 10:00 where the SONY A80J has a setting comment: "Your TV setup doesn't support 4K UHD at 120Hz." gives me pause. My main use for this TV will be PC gaming with a Radeon 6700 XT video card, which drives 4K at 120Hz. Although I suppose I could give up Dolby Vision gaming in future when games can deliver 4K at 120Hz. Also, after learning LG C1 supports G-sync and FreeSync (and SONY A80J does not) I'm leaning toward the LG C1. I do like the colors of the A80J and I definitely like superior upscaling in SONY mentioned at 11:49, which will be useful for continuing to play 1080p titles on the Nintendo Switch. Trying to decide the trade-off between FreeSync in the LG C1 and colors plus upscaling of the A80J. Will update this when purchase is done.

Great review, nice objective test with decent measurements and good point made about stutter which is more obvious on the LG. What impressed me about the Sony was its surprisingly fantastic upscaling on SD pictures which after all applies to most freeview channels.
LG and Sony I think both use the same LG screen but different electronics. I went A80J because there’s no visible difference in contrast, just on paper.
Sony have hands down the better software/motionflow processor chips and out of the box, one of the most accurate colour pallets I’ve ever seen.
LG smoothing not up to the Sony standard. Turn off motionflow in sony for a better picture or leave at low. Ditto noise reduction. Atmos 3d surround sound translated to my 5:1 soundbar set up was fantastic on the Sony. Don’t know how sq might translate on LG.
Worth mentioning that the A80J also has both Dalby Black and UHD IMax Ultra picture modes which automatically engage with streamed content filmed in DB or I Max Ultra. Utterly fabulous picture quality, especially Dolby Black…the very best OLED screen I’ve ever seen for films.
However, for realism and 3D effect, Sony’s medium and top tier full array backlit screens still produce the sharpest most believable picture, starting with their Bravia XF series(now superseded) BUT be warned as plenty of their backlit led screens seem to pack up, usually not long after warranty ends. Our XF9005 failed after just 4 years hence I’ve taken a big risk on the A80J bought as a replacement. LG usually fair much better and seem to have fewer reported failures.

I have the A80j in my den and a CX in our living room. I can barely tell the difference in real content between the two. I would imagine it’s even closer between the A80j and c1. However, I can absolutely notice the difference in gaming features between the two, vrr just feels much better. I’m also seeing the c1 $200 cheaper than the A80j at 65”. I just don’t see marginally better PQ as a reason to pay $200 more for less features on the A80j. Unless they are literally side by side the difference is negligible. I’m also very weary about Sony’s implementation of said gaming features, if they ever come. I would feel better if on Sony’s website it listed the A80j as getting vrr via firmware update. Unfortunately, the only thing mention is “other 2021 models”. I’m assuming intentionally vague in the event they can’t get it working. Even then it will never get 120hz Dolby Vision, and who knows if there will be a drop in picture quality when using vrr if we ever get it. Heck I’m even skeptical of vrr coming to the ps5 at this point. Wish they’d have taken gaming as serious as they’re picture processing, it is as important these days. If there was parity in features along with marginally better PQ I’d be happy to justify the extra couple hundred dollars. How is it the largest gaming company in the world lacks some of the biggest features in gaming on both their TVs and consoles? Sony had plenty of time to get these things right and has failed big time.

Sorry I'm a bit late with this question. How do they compare when passing Dolby Digital sound from an HDMI input the to the ARC HDMI output.
LG TVs are (I currently have a B8, considering an upgrade to one of these sets) notorious for introducing delays to the audio stream leading to lip sync errors which are inconsistent and so difficult to tune out. Does the Sony A80J have the same problem? Would be grateful if someone could advise on this aspect.
I understand that the LG C1 still has this problem from AV forum posts.
A bit more detail - I'm currently using an HDMI splitter to separate my Sky HD output into video and audio streams for the TV & Soundbar which works but seems a bit clunky. The other recommended solution is to turn off Dolby at the Sky box, but that's something I'd rather avoid. Another attempted solution is to use an Optical/Co-Axial lead to feed audio from the Sky box to the soundbar, but that doesn't work because my Samsung soundbar treats the optical and ARC leads as if they came from the same source (called "Digital In"), and switches over the ARC input on its own.

I like how you compared the chipset limitations presented by the firmware they currently use. However it should be worth mentioning that several new features and updates have recently happened and VRR support has been slowly starting to roll out. I think the issues with Dolby Vision and 120 hertz gaming are valid but it’s worth noting that all that aside the bottom line is the tech in the A8|90j series is better but requires some updates keep this in mind when buying a tv since while it may be a better tv for gaming currently; the out of box capabilities of the A80J plus the ability to fix a lot of these issues in the future ultimately means for an investment the A80J has the most potential, LG has all the features out there with very little to improve and Sony is a canvas waiting to be filled. Yes I’m a Sony fan boy but I’m not sponsored or paid by them, I just enjoy their beautifully engineered televisions and have since the 80s. Also it’s just my particular opinion.

    Hello Vincent,
I'm from Germany and currently the 65" A80J and the 65" LG G1 are in the same price range. The G1 is technically cheaper but the fact that you have to buy a stand for the G1 since it doesn't come with feet makes it slightly more expensive. I'm torn between those two and my takeaway from this video and the "G1 vs A90J" is that Sony's XR processing provides better HDR and picture quality. However, the G1 has the Evo OLED and is supposed to be the high-end model so I think the G1 might provide a superior picture in the end. I really don't like LG's WebOS and prefer AndroidTV but I'm willing to sacrifice an HDMI port for a Chromecast/GGTV. Another important factor is the clearance underneath the TV. The LG TVs seem awfully low and I need them to be slightly higher to fit a soundbar, which Sony provides a great solution for. Gaming is completely irrelevant to me so my main concern is Movies and a bit of TV. Also, my room is very bright which I darken for movies but daylight viewing brightness is somewhat important too.
I hope you or somebody can share a bit of advice on A80J vs G1 considering they're the same price.

    Thank you for detailed review.
    I have couple of questions.
I was going to buy Samsung QN90a however, in my country, it comes with ADS(IPS) panel.
I just bought LG C1 and thinking about refund and go for Sony A80J after watching several reviews because I mostly will be watching movies, serials.
    My questions are:
    1) Does Sony dims the entire screen if a channel logo is bright, just like you mention for game HUDs?
    2) Everyone says Sony is brighter but at 1:10 LG has more shadow details.
    3) How badly it affects the picture quality of Sony as it makes brighter but less quality shadow detail? Will it be so disturbing?
    3) Why does LG look better than Sony on the motion of the man(with hat) at 5:49 ? Is it 24p movie which I heard that LG perform better?
    4) I dont have professional calibrated in my city. Is it a reason to eliminate LG? Can I calibrate it with the settings and manuals on internet by myself?
    5) I mostly watch Netflix etc. Is Sony better for movies for sure? Any disadvantage compared to LG for movies ?

    • @zeek8807

Sony dims the image when it detects static elements like logos … won’t affect the picture quality but probably gets annoying if u like the brighter settings .. this can be turned off on the lg using logo luminance but can’t be turned off on Sony
The Sony isn’t brighter but bright elements are more saturated like fire or stars for example would appear more bright on the Sony but the overall picture is still the same brightness
As for motion, I’ve heard that Sonys motion smoothing is better.. but with all motion processing turned off, lg is better .. not sure if that’s true tho
As for accuracy.. lg isn’t really worse than Sony .. if u watch avforums review on both u can actually see that lg has more accurate colours out the box and that sony is pushing too much blue especially in sdr. rtings actually turned peak brightness on and changed the gamma settings in pre cal testing for c1 which skewed the results .. ninjican av also has a video on this.. both can be calibrated for better accuracy tho..
When comparing picture quality.. you’re really splitting hairs .. lg likes to crush blacks which results in more depth and deeper shadows while Sony retains more details near black through different shades of black .. Sonys processor does a better job at cleaning up noise and sharpening the image but the processor can sometimes go overboard applying too much edge enhancement.. so LG might look more natural to the eyes while Sony looks more polished and clear

    @JAKOB1977 3 роки тому +7

Vincent.. you should try to make a comparison video between fx 2017 versus 2021.. to see the difference.
    been looking to rtings data.
there are numerous differences.. 2017 is still the ultimate king of response rate on paper.. with 0.1ms 80% and 0.2% 100% (check c7 on rtings and their waveform measurements)
that was unreal fast and also too fast for low framerate content and would elevate stutter etc, though other things like high framerate content or PC or gaming.. that extreme response rate certainly ain't a con, quite the contrary.
though perhaps LG has to turn it down a nudge since with updates, modern LG OLEDs are 10 to 20x slower then the waveform measurement rtings got from C7. (that year were all from B to wallpaper had the same SoC, and that last year LG OLEDs had high bandwidth UI like USB3 that USB3 socket will also eat an RJ45 Giga-USB hub/dock .. though seems to top around 400Mb up and down from the internet speed test with the WebOS app "INternet Speed Test! thrue that USB3 socket but checking speed by the LG webbrowser in the LG C7 seems to max out around 150MBps with the same RJ45 Gigahub.. though both are better than the native ethernet socket that is 100Mb ltd.)
is the WOLED pattern still the same. here in 2021?.. not referring to the WRGB pixels, but the horizontal segment gridlines.
here is a video.. given an indication.. though thermal ua-cam.com/video/PJjjK6GkbRI/v-deo.html
the breaking bad is just the thermal pixel-retention into the pixel WRGBlayer, it will disappear after some time..(I don't see enough breaking bad to have it perm like that, around the 1-minute mark the breaking bad label are removed and the serie started and can see how fast the thermal heat-retention disappears. )
but the 3 horizontal lines you can make out' could that be WRGB panel segment?

Hi Vincent, you and others have said the new "cinematic movement" option is good for people that are sensitive to OLED stutter. Do you (or anyone else) know what it actually does? Does it introduce new frames or enable some form of BFI? Also: is the effect continuous or does it vary scene by scene?

    • @ye-rochawkins5432
      @ye-rochawkins5432 3 роки тому +4

I’ll try and answer for ya…tho I don’t have all the answers unfortunately.
Cinematic movement is just using traditional MCFI…no BFI is employed to my knowledge. So it’s just interpolating fake frames to insert into the original source, like traditional MCFI. However, Cinematic Movement is attempting to do this tastefully, without introducing obvious SOE, or artifacts…by using less fake frames, or less aggressive interpretation. However, there is still both, especially if you’re sensitive to SOE. But it is definitely one of the better MCFI algorithms out there, when it comes to trying to maintain cinematic film cadence, while masking the stutter.
I don’t believe it works on a scene by scene basis tho…it seems continuous..from my understanding, it’s more reliant on the frame rate of the content itself, when choosing how to interpolate. So 24p content might have a slightly different algorithm than 30, or 60.

@@ye-rochawkins5432 thanks for replying! Ok, so you're saying frames are added. However, when slowly playing the section in Vincent's C1 or G1 review where he enables cinematic motion, it doesn't appear to result in a higher frame rate?

It's so sad to see these issues with each manufacturer. Sony has better HDR highlights handling but has worse dark scenes output. Panasonic has the worst gradient handling this year, without any smoothing feature implemented. And many other pros and cons going back and forth between these makers. And all this at hefty premium prices. Sony has one of the most sold consoles and they lack every gaming feature, like wth.

    • @guily6669
      @guily6669 3 роки тому +5

I would have gone for the 55 since it has the full brightness that is a bit cut on the 48, but sure if space is not available you went definitely for the BEST 48 inch screen ever made since all high end TV's now start only from 55inch and up and even not many time ago they made lower than 55 inch but was always a downgraded version of the same TV missing features which would only be available on 55 inch.
LG 48 is definitely the 1st 48inch entry to a actual fully featured high end TV\monitor though the brightness could have been like the 55 inch.
ps: The only thing that never makes sense sadly is the price since the 55 inch here is always cheaper as it's always in promotion and the 48 never really seen much of a big promotion in it since 2020 CX
EDIT: Oh and forgot to say Dolby Vision 4K 120hz is also a very important thing since it means the TV actually supports a far better HDR with full color quality with all features enabled and even at 120hz (probably not the biggest feature for now, but VERY important for a FUTURE PC that you would buy with much better hardware being able to push games at much better resolutions and visuals than a current PC). And I always buy a TV not just for the moment but rather for the future to keep for a long time so that over time it doesn't even just stay the same amazing quality but rather it actually keeps improving making what you paid for it to be so much more rewarding.

@@rbarret9726 The LG Oled CX 48 inch at least had considerably lower brightness than the 55 inch version which is on a UA-cam TV reviewer\calibrator HDtvTest...
But on the C1 Oled if you really plan to go for the 48 inch I don't think you can go wrong as things are much better than on the CX but I still would probably expect a very small decrease in brightness over the 55inch but I don't think would be anywhere near the difference between 48 and 55 on the older CX if there's even still difference on the newer model...
Anyway I would only go with the 48 for space reasons. In case you have space it would probably be better to always go for the 55 inch version because in a promotion is just much cheaper, you simply just will need more space and put it a bit further away from you specially for PC, but then again you can also go sit much further from it and enjoy movies with the cinema like factor 😁

I don't even fully close the blinds and Oled brightness + contrast for me has been ideal on settings at 85/100, even on hdr movies and gaming.
Main reason to choose between 48 and 55 is the watching distance.
