I bought the CD of this tour because I loved PG's great album So. I loved it from the first time I played it and became an instant Paula Cole fan. Not long ago I heard the studio version with Sinead and she just wasn't anywhere near as good as Paula. Mind you, I haven't heard the live version with Sinead, which I'm sure would have been better than the studio version.
This is, IMHO, the greatest R'nR show ever written, choreographed, performed, filmed, and pubulished. I tbought this just before I went to spend a Summer in Tokyo working, and it kept me alive in my tiny little hotel room.
Paula Cole's volume and tonal shading from note to note and phrase to phrase was superb , perfectly complimenting Peter's lead, coming up to lead for a moment, then receding for background lines during the instrumental sections. Exquisite and sensitive musicality !!!
Cole was both singing Sinead O'Connor's part on this song, and had replaced O'Connor on the tour literally days earlier when this was recorded. I honestly prefer Cole's live performance here to O'Connor's studio original, and it's amazingly strong for having come to both the tour and Gabriel's catalog on short notice. It's an amazing display of pre-autotune vocal talent.
La perfection, c'est tout simple, je n'imagine même pas s. Ô Connor à sa place, car P Cole est parfaite et fat union parfaite avec Peter Gabriel... ✨✨✨✨✨✨
I agree this is emotional and beautiful 💞, and one that’s very underrated. But IMH 70ish y.o. opinion it brings back 👍 😊 memories of the 🌟 days that WERE - not might have been!
I've read a lot of the comments here. Not one person said anything negative about the song or the show. That shows the type of Genius Peter Gabriel is! He has a talent far beyond his years!
The best version of this song, it transcends music. It’s unsettling and beautiful at the same time. It’s haunting. The artist Peter Gabriel has the makings of a prophet.
When you can marry music, arrangement and brilliant poetry into a 7:00 minute song and leave people breathless, you have left something to the world that few people can.
This song just pierces right to the soul. It speaks in a way I can't really put a finger on. There aren't many things in life that touch so deep. Masterpiece, Perfection, Indescribable are words that don't fully paint the whole picture. It gives you the feeling that you've longed to have, but didn't know you needed. This song is a key to a hidden door in the heart.
This song along with Come Talk to Me is the soundtrack to the years before my divorce. It was a dream-like 3 years, watching her float away, finding myself closer to God than ever before, sensing her affair while not wanting to believe it, reviewing my missteps, asking for conversation, asking to repair, asking to listen to this album together, never doing it except alone.
Agree with you on all points, but that biblical Tree was kinda corny, needed a true visual artist. Peter Gabriel messes up a bit in visual representation, deserves better.
Yes I adore this whole set and Paula Cole looks sooo cool! Long dress, Dr Martins and hair up. I dressed in a similar way many years ago 😁. Her vocals are spot on and such a match with PG. Just about my favourite performance video.
Peter Gabriel taught me, that I'm not the only one struggeling around this, and that there's a way to express it to others around me. First I quoted his words, but very soon I found my own.
Of all the concerts I've been to; Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, The Who, ACDC, Ozzy to name a few, this by far was the best performance I have had the opportunity to experience. Thank you Peter Gabriel for your vison and showmanship.
That's a wonderful version of the song. Peter's voice matches Paula's extraordinarily well. The band plays with tremendous restraint to allow the voices to tell a beautiful tale.
I will treasure my cassette of Us forever, i bought it when i was just i child, with the first money i earned in my life. Thank you so much Peter, you are one of the greatests in music history.
My 1st time seeing this. He is so brilliantly cinematic in his videos, and now I see it's a component of his live shows as well. Circling the tree, but still not connecting, and his hand reaching for her but her back is turned. The imagery is as beautiful as the song. Peter is a master at his craft.
5:52 onwards in particular has to be one of the most emotional moments in Peter Gabriel's catalogue. Everything about it just screams bittersweet sorrow, the high falsetto from Peter combined with the doudouk, it swoons and it sighs and it cries and it weeps and I've never heard anything like it before and it brings me to tears every time. This song just screams sadness at the expense of love
The music is really a bridge between the earth and the sky, between the human beeings and God, between a man and a woman and The Lord. O come back soon the Messiah.
"And all the while the distance grows between you and me - I do not understand." The line that never fails to move me. Love ... failing again. Such a great song. Paula Cole is superb.
I had totally forgotten Paula Cole was his backup singer for a while. Holy shit, their voices compliment each other perfectly and she sounds incredible singing the harmony in that song.
