I was fortunate enough to see Peter Gabriel in LA and San Diego back in the 80's. He is an imaginative artist and the consummate professional. After the concert in San Diego, I was lucky enough to get back stage and meet Tony Levin and the band and he volunteered to take us to meet Peter Gabriel. They were so friendly and kind. All true gentlemen.
This song (no disrespect to Peter) wouldn’t be what it is without Manu!! Unlimited props to this phenomenal percussionist!! (I wouldn’t dare call him simply a drummer!!)
In 1994 I was living in Manhattan. I bought tickets to see him in New Jersey. Best tickets I ever bought. The crowd , the feel, the moment. Best night. Everyone was just about the love
Peter and his daughter became more and more distant through the years, almost to be point of being completely estranged from each other. Their poor relationship ate at Peter on the inside. This song is about trying to repair his broken relationship with his daughter. He sings it beautifully and you can feel the pain he must have been going through.
I still have my original ticket stubs from this concert. I was blessed enough to see it twice, in two different cities. The first performance was in in Rochester NY. From what I remember, it was the first official stop of the tour. At the start of the show, Peter said something to the effect of "This is our first time performing this live. We'll give it our best." This concert spoiled me, and raised the bar quite high. It was, by far, the best live performance of any kind that I had ever seen up to that point in my life. Peter had such overwhelming respect for the opening band. Just before they came on, Peter strolled right out onto the center stage. The house lights were still on. He got everyone's attention, and then he introduced "Papa Wemba," with grand enthusiasm, glowing respect, and swelling pride. That moment, set the tone for the rest of the show. By time the opening band had finished, they had proven, to me anyway, that they were worthy of such a fantastical introduction. By pure chance, I was in Toronto, about a week later, with a friend. Peter was playing at the Skydome. I conjured up two awesome tickets, and I watched the entire performance all over again. At this show, he played Biko, to end the show. He did not do this in Rochester, so it was a very welcome surprise. Peter Gabriel does not just sit there, play music, and sing. When he performs, he puts on a show. Peter is a magnificent musician, and a talented artist. One of my personal favorites of all time. I've seen him perform somewhere north of half dozen times in my life. Inside, outside, and lakeside. I got lucky once, and I was able to meet Tony Levin, after a small show that he played with his band. It was winter in Western New York, and the weather in Rochester was cold and blustery. I remember feeling a little bad, because the band drove a van to the show, through the cold and the snow, to get to Rochester. I also believe they drove back home that night, after it was over. The roads were not anywhere near good. The show was at a small club, long gone now, in the city. It was called "Milestones." I went with my two very friends. We were three, out of maybe fifty or so people in the club. We sat in tall bar chairs, around a tiny tall bar table, not more than ten feet from the stage. From that vantage point, I was blown away when Mr. Levin started to weave his magic around an awesome rendition of "Back in New York City." I purchased a Tee shirt from the Secret World Tour. I wore it until the threads just weakened, then finally broke. I was able to wear (what was left of it) to the "Growing Up" Tour in Cleveland. The shirt was a just over a decade old at that point. It was on it's last legs, but I wore it proudly. I went to the "Growing Up" Tour in Cleveland in 2002. I purchased a new shirt. My wife was glad to see me retire the old one. It was a quality shirt, but once again, I have worn it countless times. Hundreds, easily. The collar is stretched out, it has a few small out stains. There are even a few tiny holes in various places. This shirt has also been around for over a decade. It's time for another new shirt. I can only hope that their is another tour yet to come, otherwise I'll be wearing rags. Others have used the words, "Pretty much the greatest thing I have ever seen," in reference to this video and this concert. I would never dream of disagreeing. Peter Gabriel has impressed me every single time that I was lucky enough to see him perform. Awesome memories that I will cherish forever.
Wow. I completely forgot that I wrote this. It brings back some really great memories. I could write an entire book on Toronto alone. I'll spare you, for now. I'm just surprised that someone actually read all of that! I'm happy that you enjoyed my ramblings. That makes taking the time to write it more than worth it. He's worth the effort to see. I hope you are able to experience it sometime. Thanks for the comment, and the reminder. :)
Angels Miracles, your story gave me the chills... I also saw this concert live twice, one in Buenos Aires and the next week in Rosario, both cities in Argentina, my country. It was awesome, and it was great to remember that, also through your words! Thank you :)
I was also at the Rochester, NY show in 1993! If I remember correctly, Paula Cole was sick or unable to perform for some reason. Is this true? If so, do you remember who replaced her? They gave away flyers or mini-programs before the show. Did you save yours? I wish that I still had my ticket stub and program! I bought the VHS tape when it came out, and later bought the DVD. I also saw Peter Gabriel in Rochester on the "Security" tour.
I and my people did some wiring work for Manu Katche's foldback sytstem for this tour back then and I saw one of the technical rehearsals at RAF Benson in the UK in a old aircraft hanger with about 100 technicians and the big Brit Row PA system. It had many stops and starts then and I never saw any of the actual gigs but it was a memoriable occassion. Only later did I see the concert on uTube and this track was one of the best. Peter Gabriel was one of the nicest and down to earth musicians I have ever met by the way.
Peter Gabriel truly speaks to me. I am not sure whether to crumple in a ball, shaking like a leaf, or to run out into the world ready to conquer it. Thank you for existing.
My advice: Run out into it. We have but one life. Live it to the fullest. Enjoy the subtleties of the human experience. And thanks to Peter for his contributions in this regard.
Frank, I listen to PG alot lately, during this time of Covid. And especially this week, because I know that PG is a strong supporter and fighter for human and civil rights worldwide. I live in Minneapolis and last week, we lost yet another innocent black man to police aggression It makes me incredibly sad for George Floyd, his family, and our country. When I am emotionally spent once again, I listen to PG. His music soothes me and gives me hope. His heart for his fellow human beings gives me courage to go on.
I was there that night, close to the stage, understanding everything that was going around in real time ... after all these years nothing has changed ... that was the night of magic.
I was at the show in Auburn Hills, US in June, so a few months before that performance. I couldn't wait until it made it to Toronto. My poor ex thought I was having a meltdown. I was absolutely catatonic just taking everything in. I've been to a lot of shows and they're usually 3-6 dudes most of them just standing around and playing the hits. That show was so much more than anything I saw before and since,

1993 to 2023. Seems like only yesterday that I showed up to the San Diego concert without a ticket and scored a free first row. Yes, the Come Talk To Me was the best use of stage to date that I had ever seen. So weird to now see Bic Lighters instead of cellphone lights. But PG doesn't disappoint. 2023, Denver concert (again without a ticket but found one) proved he is still great at visuals. The songs stand on their own, add his performances and you have consistent great value. Thanks PG and everyone else who makes these memorable performances.
My husband and I took our daughter to the Secret World tour when she was 14 maybe. When we left she told us "That's the first time I have ever SEEN music. Before she had only heard music. And Tony Levin totally rocks!
Mitreisender Rhythmus. Das Beste Drummer Spiel was ich je gehört habe. Melodisch kaum zu toppen. Auch die Stimme der Sängerin führt zu einem Gefühl von paradiesischen Träumen. Sie sieht ergreifend aus. Toll. Glückwunsch Erich Jeske
what i love about Peter on his live tours is that the band is always so into it. when you watch these people you can see the way the music flows through them, they're truly into it, and they project that so powerfully that it makes half the video. just plain fucking beautiful...
I’m sure there are tons of comments on here about Manu…….after being a fan for so long, what I keep going back to is how he says he doesn’t really like playing alone with backing tracks yet he does it SO F’n WELL.
At the 5:00 mark, I swear the drummer grows two more arms and another foot. The dreads sprout all on their own. Dude is insanely talented on top of one of the greatest performances ever!
Such a simple and beautiful, yet commonly human message: the missing of an old friend, someone you had a connection with, and this is the most beautiful representation of that sentiment. Gabriel puts on the best shows.
Mr. Gabriel is my Master in global arts, maybe he invented the global pop song, and this is one of his best pieces, a truly world music song with valuable lyrics, a pure gem of human creation, a legacy for the future, one of the most beautiful songs in the world in my opinion. Its greatness is that can apply in a situation between a man and a woman and not only to father and daughter. Lots of nice details like in a good film.
I've worn out the VHS, so I bought the Blu-Ray of it. Put the volume UP! This was one of the most awesome bands that Peter Gabriel put around: Manu Katche, Tony Levin, David Rhodes, Paula Cole... the latter, is just amazing, what a voice she's got!
Not to take anything away from Paula, cos she is great, but Sinead O'Connor sang with him both the nights I saw him at Earls Court on this tour...they were sublime together.

From that vantage point, I was blown away when Mr. Levin started to weave his magic around an awesome rendition of "Back in New York City."
I purchased a Tee shirt from the Secret World Tour.
Never seen him perform live but I envy your experiences. Beautiful story you have here :)
Angels Miracles you're lucky, I've only had the opportunity to see him once in my life, I still remember it to this very day
I was also at the Rochester, NY show in 1993!
Secret world. Love my DVD. Digging in the dirt
Run out into!
My advice: Run out into it. We have but one life. Live it to the fullest. Enjoy the subtleties of the human experience. And thanks to Peter for his contributions in this regard.
Me too
Peter Gabriel is so good, he makes bagpipes sound good!
Peter Gabriel, Paula Cole, Tony Levin, and Manu Katche on one stage... words can't say what the music does.
Let us not forget David Rhodes on guitar!
For me, Manu makes this song work. Put any other drummer in here and the song/performance becomes average.
Tony, Manu, Paula....and the genius of Peter Gabriel makes this a favorite
Mindblowing drumming by Manu Katche brings this song to the next level
He's such a fluid, effortless drummer. Can watch him all day long.
reminds me a bit of Bonzo the way he drives the song like an Abrams tank going through a brick wall. His second solo is just godlike.
it like he's dance
There's also a big fat drum track on this song which is pretty much fundamental.
yup... Manu...Picked up the pieces...
He combines music with theatre so well it becomes a complete experience.
You should check out the Live Foxtrot show when he was with Genesis
2020 in the middle of the Covid-19 mess I am loving me some Peter Gabriel...
Frank, I listen to PG alot lately, during this time of Covid. And especially this week, because I know that PG is a strong supporter and fighter for human and civil rights worldwide. I live in Minneapolis and last week, we lost yet another innocent black man to police aggression
It makes me incredibly sad for George Floyd, his family, and our country. When I am emotionally spent once again, I listen to PG. His music soothes me and gives me hope. His heart for his fellow human beings gives me courage to go on.
@Luigi Raimondo Pomo Ciao and thank you, Luigi. This year -- 2020 --- has been quite the year so far, hasn't it? Stay healthy and safe in Palermo!
I was there that night, close to the stage, understanding everything that was going around in real time ... after all these years nothing has changed ... that was the night of magic.
Espectacular puesta en ecena
I was at the show in Auburn Hills, US in June, so a few months before that performance. I couldn't wait until it made it to Toronto. My poor ex thought I was having a meltdown. I was absolutely catatonic just taking everything in. I've been to a lot of shows and they're usually 3-6 dudes most of them just standing around and playing the hits. That show was so much more than anything I saw before and since,
Perfect Sound and Performance 🎉
The song reminds us of the importance of breaking down emotional barriers and seeking an authentic connection with others.❤
The power of this song speaks on many levels: father to child, lover to lover, God-Jesus-Holy Spirit to each of us.
The last three you mention
Huh? You make no sense at all. ????? // Are you high?
Thank you, Peter!
Thank you too much Peter!
This man can sing.
This song the best of many.
Astonishing.
Such an amazing performance, what a voice, what a band!!!.
It brings out so many emotions in me, God.
What more can I say.
Nothing, except, thank you Peter.
SHALOM MY SWEET PETER! ..YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST MUSICIAN WITH YOUR MARVELOUS SONGS AND VOICE. ...LIVING LEGEND YOU! ! ALL MY RESPECT AND LOVE. ..😇😍😍GOD BLESS YOU FOREVER AND EVER! ! 🙇❤❤❤💋💓👍👌✌☝☝👏👏👏👐👐👑🎸🎵🎶🎤🍸🍸🌹🌹🌹🌻🌻🌻🍀🌺🌷🌸🌼🌼🌈🌞🌍🏆💎💌🔝🔱💯✅✅✔✔💥💫🌠🌟✨❇ ESTHER FROM FLORENCE ITALY 😇💜🔯

must come in the hall of fame
1993 to 2023. Seems like only yesterday that I showed up to the San Diego concert without a ticket and scored a free first row. Yes, the Come Talk To Me was the best use of stage to date that I had ever seen. So weird to now see Bic Lighters instead of cellphone lights. But PG doesn't disappoint. 2023, Denver concert (again without a ticket but found one) proved he is still great at visuals. The songs stand on their own, add his performances and you have consistent great value. Thanks PG and everyone else who makes these memorable performances.
If you are reading this- have a wonderful day or night (and tomorrow and next week and rest of your life) You are wonderful just the way you are :)
Brilliant and inspiring music artist 😊👍🌹
Thank you so much for your comment and continues support I appreciate it, God Bless you and stay safe
Even here on the other side of the film is grasping in movement! In sound in emotion! P G speaks for himself!
Ein großartiger Künstler ❤❤❤
Das habe ich live erlebt . . . Ein Hammer Konzert . . . * Gänsehaut * . . . Danke ❤️ . . . 🌈
My husband and I took our daughter to the Secret World tour when she was 14 maybe. When we left she told us "That's the first time I have ever SEEN music. Before she had only heard music. And Tony Levin totally rocks!
Br
You and your husband are a master's!
Jesus h Christmas trees , saw this at LA FORUM magic beyond. Pure JOY thank you
One of the best concert openings EVER!
Ich hab die Tour damals in MUC gesehen und werde es nie vergessen, ein sagenhaftes Erlebniss.
Mitreisender Rhythmus. Das Beste Drummer Spiel was ich je gehört habe. Melodisch kaum zu toppen. Auch die Stimme der Sängerin führt zu
einem Gefühl von paradiesischen Träumen.
וואו
It also looks like they are having a lot of fun performing!
I have to agree, "Pretty much the greatest thing I've ever seen" is a fitting description.
Peter is a magnificent singer and Paula brings it to the next level. A great song sung by the greatest
With the video and painting a lot of it breathtaking Thank you
I’m sure there are tons of comments on here about Manu…….after being a fan for so long, what I keep going back to is how he says he doesn’t really like playing alone with backing tracks yet he does it SO F’n WELL.
At the 5:00 mark, I swear the drummer grows two more arms and another foot. The dreads sprout all on their own. Dude is insanely talented on top of one of the greatest performances ever!
Manu Katché💗
Canción genial, letra y musica magistral.
Puesta en escena brillante.
Paula Cole acompañante perfecta!!
Such a simple and beautiful, yet commonly human message: the missing of an old friend, someone you had a connection with, and this is the most beautiful representation of that sentiment. Gabriel puts on the best shows.
OnlyPG could pull this phone off the hook.seems very dated but classic now.thx for re post
Watching this in 2024, one word - wow
Incredible performance from Peter, and Paula Cole - what a voice, easy on the eye and a massive talent
My god, the tension between Peter and Paula.
Could you please elaborate? Friction, Antagonism or Attraction, Frission and L'amour?
I think Paula is beautiful
@@thomasfitzsimmons897 Hmmm that beautiful dark silky hair in really cute ponytail. Her sweet face, with those natural high cheek bones, really lights up when she smiles. She looks great in that long black dress with the Doc Marten's boots. And her voice, just beautiful.
@@red5llaw Yes
@@eleeter she radiates pheromones on a 30 years old video even through a laptop screen.
Before you know the language that expressions of the melody are going the body circulation....You speak to me in hard times.....Thank you ..Thank you..
.
Fast excruciating pain relief to my God damn soul. Thanks a million Peter, this Planet really need your amazing songs
I have seen that DVD about 100 times - still great!
I could put it on repeat...& never get tired of listening 😌❤
These individuals are truly one. Nowhere is there a band who's members fit so perfectly together. Magic.
It's indeed a great pleasure for me to have a supportive fan like you. Message me on my hangout indicating your name

Your magic and talent is so off the charts you blow my mind AWAY 🎉❤❤❤❤
Love i❤u!!!!!!
Saw this show at the Richfield Coliseum in '93. Life changing.
If I had a quid for every night I played this as my lullaby.
Never get tired of this song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
best perfomer live i have ever seen...a true legend...this track is from the "Us" album in 1992 - a classic
I have this bluray, my absolute favorite of the concert videos I own & I own a bunch. Man, I wish I could have been at this show.
It just doesn't get any better than that.
